The Sugar Bacon/Pear Flatbread was to die for!! If I were writing this on that one thing, they'd get 5 stars. The Margherita Flatbread was good, too. The manager was really polite and came out to say hi while delivering food and drinks to others. BUT, the waitresses were lame. When I arrived, only 4 tables had people and still no one came to see if I needed anything for at least half an hour- though they were moving around, chatting, and bringing drinks to other tables. Then, I asked for a drink and when it was brought to me, I was told it was a dollar more than the original price she told me. She should have told me before making it- instead of saying, "well, I know you have a credit card"- not cool. A friend there said she'd waited on him last week and gave him $6 back from $20 when he'd had an $8 drink. Yup, you do the math. She fixed it when he brought it to her attention- but not cool. I am in disbelief that St. Rocke has received 3.5 stars from Yelpers. When the venue opened up in the South Bay a couple of years ago I was stoked to have a legit music venue in the heart of the beach cities. I've caught shows here for Nikka Costa, The Sweet and Tender Hooligans, and a Johnny Cash tribute band. The decor is rock-star sleek and the patrons are not your fresh out of high school crowd. Let's just say it's a "mature" crowd. I guess the parking situation sucks, but it's Hermosa - the parking situation in Hermosa sucks in general. The venue has a long bar towards the back of the room that does not have visual access to the stage, but there are TVs all over the place and the sound system is good. The staff clears out the bar stools and tables right before a show so it's standing room only in the middle of the venue. There are lounge couches to the side, but you'd have to come early or reserve those beforehand (there might be a bottle service charge - idk since I don't roll that way). I always keep my eye on their events calendar because they'll have up and coming artists come and play, i.e. Justin Nozuka. Plus, they have a pretty rad "Geeks Who Drink" trivia night on Monday's. read more

From the guys that bought you Union Cattle Company now comes this place. It's a nice little break from the pier crowd. If you talk to the GM he'll tell you we built UCC while we were in our 20's and this is our kind of place for our 30's. It's nice and loungey inside. It's more of an intimate venue. People say it reminds them of what you'd find in like Santa Monica or outside Southbay. I've been in Hermosa 8 yrs now and long gone are my days of going big at Sharkeez on a Tue or Wed night. This place is also convenient because it's a 3 block walk up the hill for me, so that could be a bias for me. I've been here 15 times or so since they've opened. They worked out most the kinks like the AC not working for the 1st month and adding happy hour drink specials. They have a really good happy hour from 6-8pm during the week. It's nice because it goes a little later than most places, so it's easy to make it there by 7 or 7:30pm. 1/2 price appetizers & pizza, $3 draft beers, and $5 wine... oh my. The food is actually pretty good. The 3 Kobe Beef Sliders served on sweet Hawaiian rolls with sweet potato fires for $5 is the big Happy Hour winner. Rock Out with your Kobe Beef Sliders hanging out. Also the seared Ahi tuna with mixed greens for $6 is really good (very spicy). They have a make your own burger sheet too (think The Counter, but not as many selection). Their turkey burger patty w/ goat cheese and grilled onion on it gets a thumps up from me. I've seen some good bands here and been to a couple bday parties too. Ok so we went to sit down oh no that table is going to be moved as soon as band starts THE BAND WAS PLAYING. Ok can we sit here OH NO same thing so we found a place to sit. 25 minutes later FINALLY we had to flag down a waitress to help us. i INTENTIONALLY MADE EYE CONTACT WITH EVERY EMPLOYEE WHO WALKED BY TO NO AVAIL. There was a total of 17 people in restuaraunt YES I counted them. TERRIBLE SERVICE........ We left after Groove Session at 10 oclock and the tables we wanted to sit in were still in the same place. An awesome venue at a prime location (right by Redondo Pier) for good live music in the South Bay. Service has been excellent every time I've visited and I absolutely LOVE the fact that often times I'm able to find a comfortable seat where I can still see the stage while enjoying a few drinks. The way they serve wine also adds to their list of good qualities. A wine glass is given to you with your wine in a separate mini carafe so that you can pour a few ounces as you wish to your glass thus airing out the wine more. Ambiance is classy with a youthful edge, think leather ottomans and chairs, suede booths/couches, dark wood, and brick walls with projected images of their logo. Their menu also has a section for you to build your own burger! I heart restaurant master minds that understand some people, such as myself, enjoy taking part in culinary creations. Take that and add to the fact that happy hour on Tueday lasts ALL NIGHT, me likes a lot :-) Some of the cons...the crowd is a bit less diverse than what I like, but the artists they have lined up are generally worth seeing for the usual $10 door fee. Happy Hour: happy hour Everyday until 8pm? name me another spot that does that. The taco appetizers 4 little round tacos are a steal. There wasn't that many people so it's more of a place you go with some friends and hang out. I really like the layout and atmosphere of the place. There's different places to chill with lounge couch type area, a place next to a fireplace, or some tables next to the bar area. This place should definitely not be confused as a sports bar type place. They've got nice TVs and everything is in HD and do show games, but when its Sweet Sixteen time for college bball and you're not showing the game when I walk in, that is the definition of not being a sports bar. Thankfully after I asked them to show the game they were OK with that suggestion and changed the channel rather quickly to the march madness game. read more

Hit this place for the first time 6/5/08 for a Laker game, the 1st of the finals! Wasn't sure what to expect of the place as I recalled it being a bit of a rogue bar, the remodel is great!! Friendly staff fed me happy hour $3 drafts of Stella beer, my friends and I wolfed down the $2 slidder burgers that feature Hawaiian bread buns... My friend said you could serve dirt on these and she'd still eat 'em, she was right.. YUM!! They also oredered calamari and beef scewers (sp?), the calamari was tasty, not spongy. The beef and grilled onion had a ton of flavor, and was juicy! 4 stars as my friend called in for a couch but the manager bumped her reservation for pretty people.. Whatever. :o/ Well, we had a great view of the game and did I mention $3 dollar Stellas? I liked the place enough also for the entertainment after the game that I'm going to host a b-day party for my gf this next Thursday, I hope the Lakers can pull another one out. We went to the private tasting event on March 2nd. The flyer stated "complimentary new menu items served" and "new cocktail menu served/hosted". We were very excited to try this out! After waiting outside in line for 20 minutes to check in, we found a spot at the end of the bar. The bartender set down menus that had food and drinks with prices. We were somewhat confused when he asked what we wanted to order. We asked what the hosted bar and food was. He explained there were samples of the cocktails in one small section of the bar (tiny 1-2oz samples) and we had to go wait in line for those too. We ordered a cocktail and went and got our tiny drink sample. Sugary, weak, typical fruity cocktail. The Oscars were on and I asked for the subtitles to play so we could read what we were watching and the barback snapped at me that he couldn't help me and that he was busy and he just didn't know and didn't have time for that. I later asked a manager who also couldn't seem to help me either. We were starving and no food was coming out. We decided to order food from the menu that was placed in front of us, but apparently we couldn't do that. Then we waited for the complimentary food that was going to be tray passed....about 45 min later one tray came by with one crostini and some peppers and cheese. About 30 minutes after that, one other tray came by with a beef that was decent and an undercooked risotto. My friend dropped her fork but they never brought us another so we shared mine. 20 minutes later, starving with no food in sight and no desire for another fruity overpriced cocktail we closed out and left. Frustrated, hungry and unsatisfied is how we all felt. We went to Mediteranno and had some great tapas and sangria which we happily paid for instead. read more

I love everything about this place. One of the many reasons why California is the greatest state. I went to visit my brother last month (from Boston), and he was very determined to take me and my friends here for some dinner. He could not stop talking about this place, and now I know why. Really cool decor, awesome live music, and the best happy hour I've ever been to. $5 for everything and anything on the menu. $5 for grey goose martinis. $5 for all the delicious menu items that are out of this world. Must try: mini teriyaki skewers, calamari, mini saint macs, garlic parmesan fries, and essentially anything on the menu that sparks your interest- trust me, it'll be good. The only thing that annoyed me was that we were unaware that a show was about to go on, so there werent any available tables since most of them were reserved. However, we snatched up some spots at the bar and enjoyed a solid hour and a half of $5 heaven. read more

So I have been here many times for happy hour plus for shows but the last 2 times I haven't been impressed. They've hired new servers who are extremely inattentive, inexperienced and lazy. I get a "you have to spend a lot of money to get our attention vibe". I came last night for taco tuesday, I'm not fond of their tacos since mine were cold last time, so I ordered off their everything is $5 happy hour menu which is a lie. I ordered the chicken nacho tower and they charged me an extra $3 for chicken. I was like really?! It was hard to get there servers attention, they were chit chatting in near the registers. It took them awhile to notice we had sat down even though we were near them. And then when I do want to go see a show it's $20 or more plus food... Just not worth coming back here anymore. read more

Best live music in the South Bay--great acoustics, great vibe. The interior is dark and sexy. The seating areas are all interestingly placed, you can even sit by a fireplace if you want to. Another great thing is that if you want to sit at the bar to be closer to the hand that pours, there are flat screens showing what is happening onstage. Our first visit to Saint Rocke coincided with their very first brunch concert. Bought our tickets on Goldstar and had a very short wait before entering. The musical theme for the first hour was the music of Carlos Santana and after that it was kind of a hodgepodge of 70s classics with an Afro-Latin spin. Loved the band and the atmosphere! Seriously, the entire staff is amazing. I only have two quibbles: 1) The food was plentiful but could use a tad more seasoning--ha! 2) I really wish we had reserved a table because my back was killing me from sitting at the bar for over three hours. read more

I came here because my band was set to play here on a Friday, and I was pretty excited. I've heard many great things about this place and I was eager to check it out. When you first walk in, it really seems like it's a standard restaurant, except with a guy in front collecting the cover charge instead of giving you menus or signaling you off to be served. Instead, you walk down a hallway and into a large open area with a stage, bar, and some seating. The decor really minded me of a classy house rather than a restaurant. Blue mood lighting and jazzy decorations with images of Coltraine and Brubeck and other electric pictures and records. I actually had to wait around till anybody actually bothered to tell us what to do. I figured it was a seat yourself type deal, but it seemed no one even cared to seem to what to help us. No matter. We sit and we were happy to indulge in the Happy Hour menu since it is touted as 5-8 on the website, but we were actually cut off. New policy, 7:30pm. Mind you it's not on the website nor are there any signs posted anywhere. We literally got there 1 minute too late and the waitress said she couldn't do anything. Ugh. But I had a band comp, so I would get a few free beers anyway, so I decide to eat and drink. Their menu really touts the sliders, which on the menu lists 5 different types. When they say Choose Four, one would think you would be able to choose any combination of four different sliders since it doesn't say otherwise. Well, apparently when you place an order, all four has to be the same. Ugh. No matter, I get an order the Mini Macs and my friend gets the regular Kobes, also with the Parmesan fries to share. Our order comes in due time, and it was ok. Mind you even though both of us were starving, I could still tell the sliders weren't exceptional or anything. Perhaps above average, which is still good. But the sliders were pretty uneven. Some sliders had a HUGE bun, while others not so much. The regular Kobe beef ones were a bit plain. I would suggest getting the Mini Macs, they are pretty good and the most popular. Parmesan fries were decent. Beers all were $5, so pretty fair. The quality of their live music acts are really good, and I'm not just saying that cause my band played. The staff is really friendly, and their sound guys work fast and set you up well. They clear the tables once the main bands start and there is lots of room in front and on the side for the audience. It kind of has a House of Blues feel, yet on a smaller and less corporate scale. I would definitely recommend the place if you are checking out a band you like in a small and no hassle friendly area. Parking can be tough, but valet is $6. I don't think I'd ever come out here "just cause," but the sound is pretty good and the food is decent. read more

We used to pass Saint Rocke back in the days of Pitcher House, and recalled what a "hole" it was. We found a show of a band we wanted to see, and went last night. OK, so parking is tricky. But it is on PCH in Hermosa. And at the beach ... parking sucks. We found a spot, and headed in. We were greeted by the staff, and they were great. The interior was amazing, and got a suggestion from a staff member to take two spots at the bar where we could see. (worked great) The interesting part is the main act went on at 930pm, and there were a few great bands before them. Then when the main act went on everyone moved to the front of the stage. The bartenders were extremely attractive, but also EXTREMELY hard working! (having worked at a bar for a few years, I know what it takes) Even when the crowd moved to the front, they cranked away cleaning up, restocking, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed the night, and looking forward to coming back soon. read more

We went on a Sunday - cover charge is a little steep at $12 - and apparently the happy hour is no longer available on the weekend (even though it is advertised as lasting throughout the week). Decent selection of beers and food. We ordered the Kobe Sliders (comes in a set of 3 for $7) which turned out okay for nibbling. Their nachos were slightly better though I thought the portion was kind of small. Been here multiple times over the past two years! It was really a great spot, just off the main area in Hermosa. They have a great Taco Tuesday! Cheap beer and good selection of tacos. Sometimes they can be a little spicy, but the flavor is great. The best is the fish tacos that they have sometimes, but otherwise their $1 street tacos (Chicken or care asada) are both great options. They must is getting their Nacos! Soooooooo good. It is more like 5 tostadas staked on top of each other, but makes it easy to eat! Covered in so much melty, delicious cheese. Slow service, not a big fan of over crowded tight places just to hear a cover band. Bartender was rude to me and my friends (Cassie), I understand it's a bar it's Friday and it's busy...but when I got home I checked my debt card charges and she or whomever over charged my order. I spoke to my friends and most of us got over charged as well. I'm not from hermosa beach and not thinking of going any time soon neither. :Update: the manager was kind enough to contact me to let me know the overcharges aren't overcharges. Somewhere along the line, the banks "pull" an extra bit to cover the business in case the customer leaves a tip.- this I understand but warn a girl about this, doesn't look good when you see "over charges" in your card thinking this bar over tipped themselves. I personally haven't been to a bar that did this so it took me by surprise. Maybe fixing this so someone else doesn't think the same way I did. read more

This is based on the venue as a concert venue... I think the overall set-up is a little tight and leaves the field of view as OK, not great. If you are there early, or get reservations for the front, you will do well. But, regardless, it's not bad by any means. You can see, but it's a little tight. Depending on the crowd and artist playing, it's an enjoyable experience. Basically, the artist is the attraction, and the venue is not a detraction. Plus, they have a great selection fo beers on tap. Lots of craft brews. I have never eaten here, so I'm not sure how the food would be. read more

It's hard to rate this place. We came here tonight to see Citizen Cope and eat dinner. Our server, Melissa, was amazing! The food was flat out terrible. The empanadas had raw dough still, and the calamari was not good. The employees all around did a great job, which is saying something given their shitty organization and set-up. As a former server, it was hard to watch at times. Whoever designed the layout of the place should be shot. The poor employees had to fight their way through the crowd to get anywhere - maybe try roping off a path so your employees don't lose their damn minds. Getting to the bathrooms was a battle all it's own. We reserved a table, which worked out nicely up until the show started and people crowd in front of the tables making it impossible to see. It's kind of unfortunate because this venue has nice sound quality and could be amazing with a few adjustments. read more

We showed up primarily for Meiko. The tickets were 11 bucks each. We ventured out on a Sunday night expecting to stand for a few hours to listen to great music--which we did. The place is intimate, dark, and lounge-y. Flat screen TVs, a bar, candles, couches, booths, tables and chairs, and a small stage occupied the space. It seemed like the local community came out that night because I heard a number of people commenting that it was packed, and they were all wondering why. Duh. Meiko. Anyway, there are a few parking spaces on the street and it is okay to park after 6 pm in a lot behind a couple of businesses across the street from CVS. We just ordered drinks and they were 8 or 9 bucks. I can't tell you anything about the food because we didn't order any. Well I guess I can say that they looked and smelled good. The servers didn't have a choice but to squeeze through the crowd going to and from the dining area to the kitchen with their trays of food and drinks. Saint Rocke has become my "Cheers Bar." I'm there about once a week, enjoying Happy Hour (best happy hour I know of, $5 EVERYTHING) or some other hour of the evening. I really feel like I've gotten to know the staff, and they treat me extremely well. This place has a very relaxed, dark and intimate feel inside. There is some really unique artwork of music legends past and present, with a vibe that is impossible to find anywhere else in the South Bay...and I've lived here since 2001. Where else can you see talented musicians and artists play seven days a week? Virtually every band I've seen was talented, no hacks. The repeat bands are great, and Soundbox nights are amazing. This place gets 5 stars for five reasons: 1) Atmosphere - Inviting, clean and an homage to music. 2) Music - If you have an appreciation for music and variety, not top 40 bullshit, you know what I mean. 3) Service - The bar staff and cocktail servers are all extremely nice and good at what they do. Samantha, Kelly, Priscilla, Cheron and Harmony all really hustle. 4) Food - Kobe sliders, chicken tacos, and spicy crab roll. 5) Happy Hour - Best in the South Bay, period. It was a last minute date night so I emailed Ana and asked to reserve a table for my husband's bday. She was so sweet and accommodating, giving us her favorite table in the house. I saw Hellogoodbye here on Saturday night. Every employee I encountered was insanely polite - from the door guy to the ticket taker to the bartenders and waitresses. Everyone was so friendly and on top of things without being pushy. My pint of Guinness was $6. My friend's rum and coke was $7 or $8. Not bad for a trendy/hipster bar on a Saturday night! Tip: If you're going to Saint Rocke for a concert, call and reserve yourself a table in advance! The venue is set up like a restaurant, so if you want a great view, call ahead. You don't have to order food, but you still have to reserve a spot. I took off one star because of the configuration. As mentioned above, it looks like a restaurant. Two of the tables sit up against the stage. For the three opening acts, the tables stayed where they were. Almost like a dinner theater. I sat at the bar. If you sit on the back side of the bar, they have TVs that broadcast video from the stage. As Hellogoodbye started their headlining spot, the front two tables were moved aside to make room for the crowd. I wound up being front row and it was awesome! For $15, I would definitely come back! I loved that the opening acts more or less complimented the headlining band's sound and the vibe was fun. The amazing staff and decent drink prices make it a winner in my book. read more

AWESOME! Perhaps my new favorite happy hour spot in the South Bay. St. Rocke has been here for some time, but the bar scene is not generally something that I seek, so I had not been here. It is a beautiful bar - dark wood finishes with black pleather seats. There are lots of tables - both high and low - as well as banquettes and a huge bar. Despite having mostly locked entrances, we found that the door on the corner was open. You seat yourself, and the bartender immediately gets to work. An excellent selection of wine and beer and all of the top shelf liquor you can imagine. And, most everything is $5!!! The music was great - both the DJ played and the live musician. It was Mike Stocksdale, who was awesome. The eats were great too: Kobe Beef Sliders - Medium rare morsels of ground beef on sweet rolls with caramelized onions and mushrooms with a mild aioli. Awesome! Good quality ingredients make good sliders. More aioli would have been great. Also comes with fries. (NB: It is not possible that these were Kobe Beef because import of Kobe Beef is prohibited by law, but still very good.) Chipotle Awesome with Pita and Cucumbers - DELICIOUS! A mild spice in this fresh made hummus makes it devourable. Pita and cucumbers were very fresh, and pita was warm. The one lame aspect was there was insufficient pita (even with a tablespoon per bite), and they charge $1.80 for more pita. Lame! Ahi Tuna Salad - another winner. The mixed greens are tossed in a delicious ginger dressing with radishes and wonton strips. I also had a glass of the 7 Deadly Zins zinfandel, which was great. I ordered a glass of zin, and the bartender said that they only had red. I had to laugh - is there any other kind? Seriously, that pink stuff is for kids. I will definitely be back to St. Rocke. The manager of Saint Rocke has informed me that the AC shut off was requested by a member of the band and it should not have happened and will not ever happen again. Apart from the AC it was nice to see a good band up close. Added 2 stars for convenience/waitresses and intimate experience. Do NOT NOT go see a band here. Just got back from seeing Queensryke and we could not wait to get out of there. They turned the AC OFF for the entire show. People were leaving and yelling for the AC to be turned on, which they did not do until the band finished. Terrible. read more

Great place for a show... Alcohol prices are not bad considering its a concert venue. Acoustics of the venue are above average but not top tier quality. Overall better than your average place! read more

Came here on a Tuesday night with my girl to make up for both of us having less than stellar birthdays the weekend before. JBoog was performing and we both ran into friends. The drinks were strong, the staff was nice and its a pretty cool venue. We didn't try any of the food but the people around us that did seemed to enjoy it. I'd definitely come back for another show. it's a nice little intimate spot. read more
