The place is pretty dark and they have a small stage just enough for people to play. The building has several tables where one can eat and sit down just to hangout. The place though gets very crowded because of the people yes, but the tables take up a lot of room as well. About half the room. It was very hard to get to the bathroom and out the door. Parking can be a pain so you might have to do some walking or just get there early. I had fun when I went but that's because I tried not to move anywhere. So a 3 just because the place is pretty small. Fun thing tho: Saw the woman who plays "Donna" from that 70's show. She was with friends and her bf. So that makes things pretty interesting! :D So if you're looking for a good place for friends, to hear some music and do not mind being bit cramped, then you might enjoy this. I would go back. Great intimate venue to catch a show. Feels like a true 1950's night lounge where you sit, eat, and watch the music. Plenty of great seats in the house. If you're watching a headliner with a following, make sure to get tix beforehand on their website as the seating is limited. Saw Katie Costello there and the acoustics rocked. Maybe it was just her music though. The drinks added up after an entire set, but looks like they have a good happy hour during the week from the reviews I've read. I'd give it 3.5 Stars if I could but thinking about it more it's not enough to round up to 4... I've been to Saint Rocke twice, both for shows. First time was back in November to see Anuhea! Pretty awesome to see someone popular (if you know who she is) for a lot cheaper than a bigger venue. I didn't know what to expect but it was nice inside. Super crowded, like I said she's popular. There wasn't really open seating, just VIP booths/tables and then a standing area in front of the stage. I didn't mind; I was there for a show! And luckily we ended up sitting on a ledge anyway. Which let me get to, is pretty inconvenient for anyone sitting on the other side (my bad). There's like a section where the view to the stage could be obstructed by pillars which I don't get if you're there to see a show. But I guess the venue is not only for shows.. it's a bar too so that makes more sense. The second time I came to see my friend Jason Farol (!!!!) perform! :) Got there a little earlier and got to see the two bands performing before him too. I love live shows/music so again I had a great time. This time I spent standing close to the stage and cheering haha. Or at the bar :P which I feel like maybe drinks are a little overpriced (the first time I didn't pay so I have no idea) but between me and my girlfriend we spent over $300! That can't be right. Whatever all in all, always a good time. Parking can be tough.. on the street but it's Hermosa. I know some people park in the CVS across the street but I wouldn't risk it. The lot I think is usually free but it was $5 for this show. Admission is usually $10-15 for shows. They have Happy Hour early, and Trivia on Mondays if you're in to that haha. Review of the "Killer Dueling Pianos" show: While talented piano players, these guys were lacking in showmanship, especially the big grungie dude who kept getting up through the first hour, awkwardly checking lights, moving his piano, and moving to the front of the stage to get the audience clapping. They both seemed to be nervous and a little frozen, especially through the first 30 minutes. They just played the songs straight through during this time; no jokes really, no engagement with the audience (other than a few attempts to get the audience clapping), and the songs were all straight out of the 60s and 50s. Don't get me wrong, I love the music of the 50s and 60s but it felt like more of a show for Baby Boomers and that's not what we went for nor did it fit the setting of Sainte Rocke (in all fairness, it was my first time at Sainte Rocke but I got more of a cool but chill 30s and 40s crowd vibe from the place). The bar was pretty full of happy-hour goers when we arrived at 7:40 but within 5 minutes of their set, it was cleared out! We got the feeling that the usual crowd knew what they were in for with "Killer Dueling Pianos" and they said "no, thank you." About 45 minutes in, they finally started to loosen up, tell some jokes, and play songs from the 80s and 90s. The grungie guy's rendition of "Gin and Juice" was pretty rote and he stopped about 30 seconds in and reminded people that if they wanted him to stop, they could bring up more money. He was clearly apologetic and anxious about playing the song, again painfully aware of all the 50+ people in the bar. Again, it's all about confidence and showmanship on stage...you gotta own what you're doing or people just feel weird and sad for you and that's not entertainment! We left about an hour and ten minutes into the show. Review of Saint Rocke: On a side note, really disappointed with Saint Rocke's stringy, greasy, and burnt "sweet potato fries." They had some weird seasoning which you don't need in my opinion because of the natural flavor of the sweet potato. Pleasantly surprised with the low prices, though. read more

DSB is the next best thing to Journey! They are so unbelievably good! Generation idol is horrible! If they are suppose to be tribute band for Billy Idol! What a disgrace! The singer ruined every one of his songs! If DSB wasn't the reason why we came, we would Have left! We had the nicest waitress at the bar. She was "real" and not fake like the one girl. She was in our face only trying to show off how fast she can make drinks but mostly show off her boobs! We are thinking she is just there for the attention. Ugh!! But DSB is a must see. read more

I saw Third Eye Blind here, and while they put on a great show I was pretty disappointed in the venue. I purchased a VIP Ticket to the show that included dinner and a meet n greet with the band. Unfortunately I was not able to do either of these because Saint Rocke did a very poor job of communicating when they would take place. The information was not available on the ticketfly page, so I figured I'd message them on FB, asking what time the dinner and meet n greet start. I got an automated response saying to email jess@saintrocke. That's fine, so I email Jess with the same question and receive no response. I then posted to the event page here on Facebook and again got no response. I tried 3 different methods of contact and got no response. I figured I would just show up as early as I could so I leave Pasadena around 5:30 and finally get to the venue at 7:00 - a full hour and 40 minutes before the show is set to start. I asked a worker if I could do my meet and greet and he said it was long over, and that they sent out an email to everyone with the times. I checked my email and there was nothing. I told him I tried reaching out 3 times regarding the start time and he said "sorry, go have a drink". I then checked my spam folder and sure enough there is an email sent to "undisclosed recipients" from "jess@saintrocke" with the information I needed. Any email sent to undisclosed recipients from a non reputable domain is just asking to be sent to a spam folder, and that's exactly what happened to me. You should have had Ticketfly send the email or outsource it to a marketing service, not send it from the venue's website. All in all I paid 125 bucks for the VIP ticket but didn't get to do any of the VIP things I paid for, like getting the CD I brought signed. read more

It was way over crowded and I said so. They just came at me and it was so unprofessional...I had an opinion about my experience and whoever at that time answered it poorly.. I am doing the unthinkable and reviewing this live music joint after 1 visit - that was for a movie! I went down here the other day as they were showing the MJ movie and I thought "Prob looks/sounds better at this place than playing on my 15" Mac". It was! + 1 Star - Great Space. I liked the dimensions and layout - even though they might be not ideal for hearing and SEEING a live band play, as there is a side on the long-bar side of the club that would be blocked from the band by a wall. And some other tables around the back side of the centrally located bathroom that would not see the bands playing either. Oh well. + 1 Star - They have eats. Nothing all that great, but I was pretty ok with eating my little crab roll for $8 while I watched MJ moon walking. - 1 Star - Parking. Sucks. I got lucky though and parked on the street which was easy and free. + 1 Star - Sweetest Server lady ever! I eat out allll the time. And servers don't really phase me one way or the other. But the gal Priscilla who was my server was a gem. I came alone, only ordered a WATER and my crab roll, and she treated me like gold. Checked on me enough to make me feel wanted but left me alone enough that I didn't feel like I "had to" buy more. + 1 Star - Bday idea. Went here last night for a show and OMG - I'm a fan! Lovely little place that starts off the evening as a fine restaurant. When they have bands you can order food while you watch the bands. I came to Saint Rocke to see one of my friends favorite bands play. I really enjoyed the set up. We sat in their little lounge area while the opening acts played. The sound was great and this place does not smell like your typical bar/music venue! I ordered a Raspberry Bliss and it was awful, tasted nothing like raspberry only rubbing alcohol! I had asked the waitress if i could send it back but she said that i would still be charged! Boo! But she did offer to add something to the drink to make it taste better so i just added pineapple juice. delicious! The food was good, we had the nachos and BBQ sliders. The nachos have a tostada twist, very fancy! This place is defiantly a must see!!! I'll be coming back to enjoy The Spazmatics!! read more

Just attended our 2nd Bow Wow Wow and Missing Persons show at Saint Rocke and the bands were really good. We were there for Bow Wow Wow and only wish they had played longer...such good energy. It would be great if they were the headliner. Our night started out bad (at 6pm) as we were bumped from our table due to it supposedly being reserved, despite there being no sign. Then our usual appetizer, calamari, was awful. The saving grace to the night was our waitress, Melissa, who was awesome. I just went here for my birthday and to see a Bowie cover. I had gotten tickets and called to reserve a table due to 3 of us having disabilities. When I called I asked if there was a minimum I had to pay to get the table and was told no then to find out after I got there with a packed house that they expected us to spend $500 for the table we were put at.we asked to speak to a manager who said she had informed my husband of this when in fact she did not. We got it brought down to $350 but still felt blindsided at an amount we were expected to pay for a table we did not pick out which was side stage and great but people kept trying to get up on our area which also frustrated me considering we were paying so much to sit there. So know that if your going to see a band get there early to try and find a seat at the bar where you can actually see the stage or know they will make you pay $50 a head to sit which is not on there website. read more

Great live music, terrible service. We arrived at 6pm last week to have dinner before the band started and had to wait outside for 30 min in the cold. The doorman was not overly friendly and all he said was wait here. Not hello or thank you for coming nor did he apologize for the wait. He didn't offer any explanation on why the line was not moving. The same for the girl stamping our hands at the front desk. We waited about 15 min to place our drink order which then takes another 15 min to arrive. She doesn't bring my drink because they were out of bitters which takes another 10-15 to receive. Our food order came and we had to wait another 5-10 for a place setting. The waitress was very nice and explained that the bartender either quit or didn't show up for work that day. They need to properly staff for events. Save yourself, and eat anywhere else. read more

Went here for FRIENDS trivia night. Sat at table for 16 minutes and no one greeted us or offered us a drink of water. I know because I timed it. They seemed short staffed. We walked up to the bar to order food and drinks. Male bartender was rude and seemed annoyed we were at a table and didn't order with our server. I explained to him no one ever came. It was not very nice. She came and took my order. She didn't seem to care. Too bad, I love this place. Great venue. Needs more staff and better employees. What was once my FAVORITE happy hour joint is no more.. Oh, Saint Rocke still exists, but just as a shell of what it once was.. Came in last week to find that the happy hour HOURS had changed (ends at 7 instead of 7:30), the happy hour is no longer $5 for everything in the bar (now it's a small little happy hour menu) WORST OF ALL, THE ENTIRE MENU HAS CHANGED.. what... theee.... fuhhhhh... what was once an awesome menu filled with delicious sliders, nachos and other bar food that was way better than one would expect, now is just some fancy food that isn't even all that great.. and talk about slim pickins for the happy hour menu.. I've driven by this spot plenty of times while carousing around the South Bay, but finally had a chance to visit last week to see a friend's band on a Tuesday night. It also gave me a chance to discover a really great band that I had never heard of from San Diego. If their lineups are always this good I highly recommend stopping in on a random night to hear some great music! I was also really impressed with the space. It was pristine - looked almost brand new, but with a lot of nice character to it in the decor. It managed to be funky and very modern at the same time, complete with an HD video streaming the shows through their website for those who couldn't make it in person. They have a decent beer selection as well as your standard bar. The menu said the beers on tap were $5.50 but I was charged $6... not a big enough deal to mention to the bartender, but perhaps they should be consistent. In any case, the bartender and waitress were attentive and friendly the whole night so what's a 50 cent overcharge? I really look forward to coming back here, and I think Hermosa's really lucky to have such a cool spot for music! read more

What a strange place. I somehow ended up on their mailing list a while back, and have been tempted on occasion by some of the shows on their calendar, but always passed because of the distance... until last week. An artist I love was playing and it looked to be his only L.A. (adjacent) show this year, so a friend and I got tickets, not really knowing what to expect. We easily found parking on the street, and headed inside. The layout can only be described as strange. There's sort of a lobby area connected to the actual space by a long hallway, which dumps you out directly in front of the (tiny) stage. The room is broken up into several spaces, most of which have semi-obstructed views of the stage, and some with no view at all. For a place that bills itself primarily as a live entertainment venue, I found this odd. All tables need to be reserved in advance, not that it matters, because as I said, most of them don't have a clear view of the stage, and the ones that are right in front of the stage get cleared out for the headliner. Also, the kitchen seems to be somewhere off the hallway I mentioned earlier, so the servers are forced to shove their way through the crowd in front of the stage to get to any of their tables. As a former server, my heart goes out to them - I cannot imagine the number of times food and/or drinks wind up on the floor, the result of an errant elbow or drunken dancer. Aside from the oddly laid out space, and the tiny stage, I have never been in such a loud, rude, and disrespectful crowd in my life. My friend and I managed to stake out a spot with a great view of the stage during the opening acts, but as soon as the headliner came on, were rudely shoved aside by people who wanted to wedge themselves into an insufficient amount of space (directly in front of us). Usually, the people who want to be up front are the ones most interested in seeing the show, and more likely to be singing along or at least paying attention. Not here. I was subjected to numerous conversations all around me, the loudest and longest of which (ironically) was one guy telling his friend how much he liked the artist (really? then why are you talking over him and NOT paying attention to the stage, a-hole?). As these guys were two of the people who'd maneuvered in front of me, I had the pleasure of their two large heads blocking my view while they talked. Maybe it's a South Bay thing, I don't know. Given a choice between this place or Canyon Club, I'd rather go to Canyon Club, and that is saying something. read more

(this place would be negative stars if that were an option) I was in Hermosa over the New Year and made the mistake of letting some friends rope me into Saint Rocke for NYE. Four beers later at $35 each....and we were out of there before midnight. ($132 cover for bar/food/music) Band wasn't bad when they played but most of the evening the music provided was nothing but a mix tape -- not a soul in the booth. Bad news is management heavily advertised a big spread of food and it was just non-existent. Carrots and raw cauliflower were plentiful but unless you were a rugby player willing to scrap for what looked like some sort of sliders there wasn't any other food to be had. Waitresses never got more than a few feet outside of the kitchen before every platter of "food" was picked bare. Maybe it's a case of shame on us for getting sucked into a NYE ripoff? Whatever it was, we surely did get ripped off. Best night to go to this place is...NEVER! read more

Bought tickets to see Rufus Wainwright for my boyfriend's birthday. The website said it's general admission and doors open at six. So we got there before 6:30 (it was as early as our work schedules allowed) and every single seat was already reserved. Rufus wasn't going on for three more hours, and my knees don't allow me to stand on concrete floors like they used to, so we left not long after we got there. I did ask the girl at the will-call what the policy was on the tables, and she told me every table was "upgraded", meaning a party of two had a $100 food & drink minimum. I spent a hundred dollars on the tickets, and now I'm being told I have to pay a hundred more for a seat? No thanks. The website is vague about the seating, but even worse, while we were waiting for our car, a couple told us they had driven up from San Diego because the website said there were still tickets available and when they got there they were told it had been sold out for a while. This place simply rocks. The quality of reggae rock shows is TERRIFIC! Toots Hibbard, Agrolytes, Fishbone, The Movement, Iration, Tomorrows Bad Seeds, he other guy from Tenacious D. I mean they all come through often. I love simply driving by and seeing what musical offerings they have. The beers are a tad on the pricey side and the food is excellent but also expensive. The other really cool thing about this place is that is STEEPED in punk rock history. See I am a transplant but if you talk to the locals The Descendents and Black Flag used to play here ALL THE TIME when it was a place called the "Pitcher House" The smoking lounge on PCH is also a pretty nice touch. read more

This is one of my fave bars in Hermosa. They have live music and attract some pretty great bands. I saw Greg Laswell here tonight and it's a perfect venue to catch an act. The acoustics are good and its intimate. Just the way I like it. The interior is dark and reminds me of a bar that I would see in NYC. Plush chairs, big booths and a great variety of booze. Seriously, can't go wrong there. They also serve up some pretty good eats. Their sliders with sweet potato fried are delectable. I highly recommend coming here. They have a Sublime cover band that plays here and they rock the house. Be careful though because it does get crowded on Fri and Sat nights. Have fun! read more

We mentioned to one of the managers that they needed purse hooks under the bar and he said he would look into it. They now have purse hooks! NICE! However, this place really needs to stop trying different things. They need to find their niche already and stick to it. One minute they're a "listening lounge" and you can't talk during performances, the next they're a "music every night of the week" joint, next they're sending out e-mails saying you can watch the Lakers game there (if you do decide to watch a game there make sure you read the fine print on their website or emails to make sure they'll be turning up the sound and you won't be watching the Laker game while some girl trys to sing like Christina Aguilerra)...Other times when we've gone in just for happy hour and been enjoying the live music all of a sudden they start busting really loud DJ music to where we can't even have a conversation or hear the bartenders so we left because the music was just too darn loud. It's not a terrible place, but they just need to figure out who they are! I agree with others who have mentioned the poor layout for a music venue. 3.75 Went here for happy hour with a medium sized group. it was empty at 6:30 pm, and we took over the middle room. All their premium drinks were $5 during Happy Hour (till 8 pm). All the food was also $5 during HH except for their burger. I just recovered from having a cold and decided not to order a cocktail. The rest of the ladies in my group ordered multiple. During last call for Happy Hour a lot of ladies ordered 2 more drinks to finish off the night. They were obviously good. I stuck with the food, which was mediocre. I ordered the California Sliders with fries. They were tasty enough. The chicken is marinated and served with mayo and avocado on a nice, soft and sweet bun. The fries were surprisingly yummy. I also ate the bbq chicken flatbread. This was a skip it in my opinion, though others at my table enjoyed it. I found it lackluster and the crust was not to my liking. It was $1 Tuesday Tacos, and I was told that they were tasty. The mac n cheese got mediocre reviews. No one commented on the fish tacos, so I am guessing they were mediocre too. A band started playing around 8pm or so. I have to say that I like the band. They were playing old-school stuff like the Monkeys. We were here to socialize, so the music actually defeated that purpose, hahaha. Been here a few times to catch some shows. It's not a big venue so it can get really packed. Chill vibe though, especially since we're usually just here to catch the reggae shows. We make it a point to come in time for happy hour because why not? $5 drinks and select food. Get their nachos with pulled pork, fries and their chicken wings! Perfect drunchies. Be wary with your bill though. My sister has text banking so whenever her card is charged she automatically gets a text. On our last visit, right when my sister was signing the receipts, she got an alert on her phone that her card was changed a higher amount than what the bill was really for. When my sister asked the waitress about it, she said they always automatically add tip. If after our tip it doesn't come out to the amount they automatically charged, they refund you the difference. The service is the worst that I have experienced in a long time. That is saying a lot since I live in Korea town Los Angeles. I came here with my fiancé to see her college friends perform a reggae show. The first waitress did not acknowledge us at all. I used to go to a lot of shows. As recently as two years ago I spent about night a week in front of some stage, watching fledgling bands exorcise their demons. These days I lack the time or money to travel out to Hollywood, LA, OC, wherever the underground still occurs. But as I continue to age, I fear more and more that someday a place like Saint Rocke is going to be the only kind of place where I go to see bands play. Outside of stadium-bound reunion tours, that is. Now, don't get me wrong, the place is nice. It's nice in the way that a place like that is, with its valet parking and ahi tuna appetizers. It's nice with its sexy interior lighting and decor, plush booths and decent restaurant-caliber wait-service. It's nice with its in-house photographer and HD-flat-screen-sports-game tellies mounted strategically. But when I got there, I was overwhelmed with this feeling that I didn't understand why I was there. With the awkward size and shape of "standing-room only" area, it doesn't feel like people come here to see shows. And with the cover charge (and crowding) that occurs when bands DO take the stage, they don't come here to just drink or eat dinner, either. So what do they do? I think they come here to spend money and look good. Two things I don't do, at least not very much, or for sport. I'm still of the mindset that, no matter what the scene is, I'm there to see the band. I don't go to shows to socialize or consume, I go to see the band. Saint Rocke's atmosphere -- nay, its entire mission statement -- doesn't make it easy to show up with that attitude. The place is pretty much wall-to-wall yuppies, wealthy beach-bums and self-identified "rock fans" -- i.e. people who like to nurse beers while someone plays music. It looks like a Dos Equis commercial in there. Despite itself, Saint Rocke boasts a warmly intimate performing space and fantastic sound and light engineering. Gotta hand it to them, also, for a damn good batch of sliders and sweet-potato curly fries. Yes, I ate their overpriced food. Hating makes me hungry. Saint Rocke does not actually "rock," per se. Rocking usually involves grime and sweat and animalistic celebration. What we have here is immaculate decor, comfortable seating, and a wine list. Their efforts are all well and good but it makes for both uncomfortable dining and a de-clawed show-going experience. Bottom line: Saint Rocke exists as a nagging reminder that while "rock" is still commercially considered cool, after your early 20s you can only "rock" in cocktail casual. And frankly, that sucks. A star for the band of the evening (RX BANDITS) and a star for the effort. But for those other three stars, I want some more rock out of Saint Rocke. read more

There were a few good things about this place, but not enough for me come back. I've been wanting to see the tribute band Which One's Pink? So I see they are playing here in Hermosa and I think, nice dinner somewhere, some music, and a late night romantic walk on the beach. Not so much of that happened, not all of it was the venue's fault, so I will try to limit what was good and the bad only attributed to Saint Rocke. Here was what I like about SR: A lot of good tribute bands. Besides the band mentioned above there was a Neil Young cover singer, that was very good. He says he is there often, so recommended. Clean establishment, including bathroom valet. Parking valet. Small lot though. Lots of IPA beer on tap. Bouncer at the rear door was cool. What I did not like: The show was suppose to start a 8 and did not start until after 9, the band I actually went to see, did not start until after 10. We got there early, and each round of beer was $15+ tip. After buying a couple of rounds, bartender charged $3 a piece for 12Oz of water. This place was too small to see the quality of bands that they book. Riverside Amphitheatre and the Hangar at the OC fair are both superior. Bartenders are just OK, did not change my mind about LA area bartenders. A couple next to us was arguing with the bartender about there bill (always pay cash). In the end this place would be better to watch football games then music. read more
