Upon going down the food line, I appreciated that there weren't any falafel already made because then I got freshly made ones. I suggest not getting the eggplant because it's too mushy. The cauliflower is quite spicy if you like that. I think I should have gone classic falafel and then of course add extra the guacamole just know that its extra. This is a really nice concept where you can get a wrap/salad/rice bowl with a choice between falafel or meat and a bunch of delicious toppings! It's like Chipotle of Mediterranean food. When I went there on a weekend evening it wasn't very crowded, there were a couple of groups dining in, and a few people doing take out so I didn't have to wait much for my turn. The food seemed very fresh and the restaurant seemed clean. Prices and portions are very reasonable. To-go packaging is eco-friendly and neat. The servers seemed patient and friendly. I asked for the Shawafel salad bowl which apparently is 4 falafels and chicken with salad leaves, cauliflower, eggplant, pickled beets, pickled jalapeños, garbanzo beans, red cabbage, hummus, tzaziki and some dressing. I got the tahini dressing and extra avocado. I wasn't sure if I saw the server add the chicken so at the time of billing I asked, "This is the Shawafel bowl, right" to which he answered, "Yes" and yet I asked "There is supposed to be chicken in there, right?" to which he replied "Yes, I put the chicken, it's together with the falafel." I didn't want to keep asking and he seemed sure that he had put the chicken, so I was like ok. After I went home, there definitely wasn't any chicken in there, I ended up paying for the Shawafel bowl ($15.45) and what they gave me was probably the Falafel bowl ($11.95). To be honest, whatever bowl I got was really delicious, and I definitely recommend it. They also give complimentary hot lentil soup that's very tasty. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the server just forgot to add the chicken, so let's call it a human error. But, they should have double checked especially if I am asking twice, and I would appreciate it if they acknowledge this and try to make up for it in some way. We ordered takeout from Saaj last night for the first time, as we had heard that it was really good. Perhaps because we had recently eaten at a wonderful Mediterranean restaurant our expectations were too high, but really good it is not. My first realization came when I bit into the falafel and discovered that it had no flavor, tasted greasy and was not good. Pita chips were greasy and hard, tzatziki was minuscule and, therefore, I can't really comment on taste, Chicken Shawarma was very tasty ( the only reason for the second star) but again minuscule in amount. My fattoush salad was ridiculously lacking in the chopped vegetables that should have been there. We will not be going back. read more

I have been going to Sajj for years and really enjoy the food. We cater from them regularly but this last time was a terrible experience. The portions were much smaller than usual and the manager was exceptionally rude when I called them to inform them. I hope this changes but I will refrain from catering again anytime soon. read more

Local Kitchens order review: I ordered the vegan plate and it tasted alright. My favorite part was definitely the cauliflower and eggplant -- the flavors were amazing and overall tasted good. It's located right off of El Camino with plenty of parking space. It's feels like chipotle but Mediterranean style in terms of serving style. You pick your dish, how you want it, and any additional items. They offer free soup with your meal as well. They have a bunch of things that you can add to your meal, like eggplant, avocado, chickpeas, etc. I got the beef shawarma in a salad bowl along with all the free things they offer. I added feta to my meal and a side walnut baklava. The meal is pretty good. It's very fresh and tasty. However, I enjoyed the vegetables and sauces significantly more than the meat portion. The beef wasn't as appetizing as I'd thought. Otherwise, everything else tasted great! The soup was small portioned so I would probably grab a drink as well. My go to is the falafel bowl on rice, loaded with cauliflower, eggplant, all the dips (garlic, tzaziki, hummus) and topped with the cucumber salad, marinated onions and spicy tahini. This was my first visit to a Sajj, the staff was patient, she gave me samples of all the different meats, and then made a recommendation based on the fact it was my first visit. The closest things to my office are Veggie Garden and Whole Foods, but I will make the walk over to Sajj for a quick, healthy, and delicious meal. I generally get a rice bowl with falafel and most of the bomb toppings/veggies *_* it makes my bowl so colorful! and very heavy. Seriously, by the time I carry my bowl, I know it can be split up for two whole meals. At ~$10/bowl, this is a much better meal than anything in this area. More importantly, they cater! which means a good amount of our events are catered by Sajj. Mediterranean is a catchall these days and in fact its a bit of wordsmithing it seems. Middle East is such a loaded word for many, the much safer choice would be to Go Med as it seems and it's technically is correct. Look, many would buy a Persian rug without a second thought no? But change that to Iranian Rug, and people freak out. But I digress... Sajj is basically a Mediterranean Chipotle. The concept is the same. You pick a base (or even a wrap), of rice or salad, you fill it with toppings, and you eat. They typically have several proteins to chose from (myself I stick with the falafel to mixed results). and I usually go for the salad bowl. From there I usually get the hummus, yogurt, and tzatziki, the sumac onions (extra please), cabbage, cucumber/tomato mix (very similar to Persian Salad Shirazi but undressed) and then spicy sauce. One bowl will fill you up. I comes with a small cup of soup which I don't like but my wife loves so she lucks out!. Add the pepper sauce and the cilantro chutney and its game on! The issue I have with them is that the falafel is wildly inconsistent. We seem to have several extremes from rock hard and clearly overcooked, to almost perfect and its difficult to tell which one you are going to get. Were it not for the inconsistency they would be a solid 4 stars for sure Service is usually friendly and reasonably quick. Dropped by this place since I've been on a health grind and Mediterranean food is the perfect balance of tasty and healthy. I ordered the Chicken Schwarma rice bowl with pretty much all the toppings. The bowl itself was solid. I honestly think that Cava (on the east coast) is a bit better. The bowl comes with a nice complimentary lentil soup. I'd say to stay away from two toppings. The cauliflower they offer is flavorless and very soggy, so it really detracted from the taste of my bowl. The pickled radish they had was insanely sour - I couldn't even finish them, and I usually like pickled things. The other pickled toppings they had were just fine though. 2/17/2020 I wanted to like this place. Maybe I just wasn't feeling Mediterranean food but my husband wanted to try Sajj, so I just went with it. It is set up similar to Chipotle. You pick either wrap, salad or rice bowl and your protein. You get to add some sides and sauce. They also threw in a cup of split pea soup. The taste was okay, but for $14 for Chicken Kebab I should have gotten more than 5 small pieces of chicken and it shouldn't have tasted so bland. Posting this review after submitting a feedback on their website, giving them over 2 weeks to respond, and not having heard back from them. This place is generally okay, but our recent visit was not. We visited this place around 8:45pm on 9/9/22 to get two wraps and one bowl to take with us to-go. The wraps and the bowl were both made in front of us. Upon arriving home and after a couple of bites into the wrap, we discovered a long packaging plastic piece in the wrap. We are assuming this may have been present in either the meat or one of the toppings like yogurt sauce or guacamole. We ended up throwing away both wraps. We provided them private feedback through their website so they can be more cautious with plastic packaging in their kitchen. I've been to SAJJ a few times for takeout over the past year. I've recently started coming here more often as they are still offering takeout during the quarantine. This location is right by the Safeway off El Camino and San Antonio. There is decent parking in this shopping plaza. The menu reminds me of Chipotle, but with Mediterranean style foods. My usual choice is the Chicken Shawarma in a 1/2 Rice and 1/2 Salad Bowl. For the spreads I get all three: hummus, garlic sauce and tzatziki. There's quite a variety of vegetables to add in. I'll generally add some eggplant and other vegetables such as onions and pickled turnips. Lastly, I'll top it off with regular or spicy tahini sauce. The food always tastes delicious. The chicken is juicy and the veggies are fresh. The service quick so you won't wait for very long. The workers were polite every time that I've visited. I have a lot of empathy for those who work in the retail and service industry. It's a tough job with no weekends off and it's made especially worse when you have difficult customers. I've been there.....I've had shoes thrown at me and I've had a customer throw a fit when the boots she wanted didn't zip up. Hey, it's not my fault that you're trying to fit your size 13 cankles into a size 5 boot. But, I always kept that sh*t to myself, smiled like I had Vaseline on my teeth, and tried to help a customer out as much as I could. Having gone through those retail days, I always try to be polite, understanding, and decisive when shopping or dining out. Normally, service isn't a big factor for a fast casual eatery but I've never encountered someone in the service industry who's so blatantly rude to customers as I did at Sajj. I've heard great things about Sajj so I decided to visit their Mountain View location for lunch (their SF location is closed on the weekends). I came in excited to try the food at Sajj and left upset with the negativity and bad attitude from the girl with the teal/blue ponytail. She's rude and impatient with her eyerolls and curtness. I was polite to her, made sure I knew what I wanted before ordering, and didn't bother her with any questions so I'm not sure why she felt the need to be so rude. Before ordering, I said, "Hi, how are you?". She stood there and gave me the impatient look: "So you ready or not?". When she did speak, she had to throw in unnecessary attitude. When customizing my bowl, I asked for peppers. She seemed annoyed and asked "Which one?" How am I supposed to know if this is my first time here, you don't tell me the pepper options, and there's no labels?! She then slapped on so much sauce that our food was drenched in sauce. Damn girl, I know you're salty AF but what did hummus, tahini, and tzatziki do to you?! As I moved down the line, she stopped in front of the sides...didn't ask which ones I wanted but just stood there staring at me. She didn't even ask if I wanted to a buy a beverage. After ringing me up, I said, "thank you" and she walked off. She didn't even bother pushing the trays towards me so I could reach them. In order to reach them, I had to go to the side and reach over the counter. I found out after the fact that all orders come with complimentary soup but she made it appear that it was an extra charge so I opted out. ATMOSPHERE: Fast casual atmosphere with large enough tables inside and out to seat a good amount of people. You order at the front and go through the line then pay at the end. FOOD: You can do a salad bowl, rice bowl or wrap. You choose what type of meat, toppings, spreads etc. and then pay at the end. The bowls are all delicious. You can choose from a few different proteins (recommend pom chicken) or falafel, and a salad or rice base. A bunch of toppings such as cauliflower, eggplant, hummus, garlic spread, tzatsiki, onions, etc are included. The bowls also come with a free side soup. Great spot in the San Antonio Village Shopping Center. As others have said, they've adopted the Chipotle approach, and at first I thought it looked too Americanized. They had all the right topping choices. I had the Shawafel salad bowl with chicken for my meat. I'm not sure which chicken it was, but I think it was the pomegranate one. Flavor was pretty good, but texture was kinda meh, and I didn't pick up the pomegranate flavor, but there were so many components. Next time I would try another meat. The falafel we had were perfectly fried, great flavor and not too big, so perfect ratio of crisp to soft. I piled up with so many good options, only leaving off the spicy sauces and the extra greens. I really appreciated that they cut things up just the way I like, so that when it's all mixed together no one item dwarfs the others and upstages. They have pickled turnips now too which I remember fondly from my visits to the Middle East. It was a very hot day, so I only tasted the soup. The flavor was different and I got it because it was something new, but it found the yogurt chicken more moist if this is something you prefer. The people working there are very polite and helpful, they asked if it was my first time there and explained how it works and what's included in the bowl and what's extra (just avocado and cheese).
