This is THE Thai place that has ignited my family's love of Thai food. We have family in the area and make a point of stopping here whenever in the Stafford area. We have tried the Thai Basil, Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles and the Bento boxes. None have disappointed us and the food here is the standard that we have set for Thai food. Tonight was my second time at Sake and I must say I'm shocked to see how little customers come by this wonderful restaurant. I lived in Charlottesville (Food city) for four years and have had Thai food in many different restaurants. Sake is very similar to Taro Thai, which is a famous chain found on the East Coast. Food: I haven't tried their sushi yet but so far their Drunken Noodles satisfy my Thai cravings without the need to drive all the way to Charlottesville or Fairfax. My sister had the Pad Thai, which in her opinion was good but for me it was just average. They give you a big portion so the pricing is great. Service: I had an awkward waiter but other than that, service was prompt Atmosphere: Clean, tranquil and lovely booths that would be ideal for dates All in all, Stafford is a small county relative to the big food cities like DC, Northern VA area and Charlottesville and to have Sake is a rare treat. The service here is impeccable. The air is easy going and yet refined. If you're on a date you can ask to be seated in the booths they offer that have cute little curtains for you to close yourself off from the world. I totally fell for the appeal and had one of the most romantic dinners I've had in a while. I never felt rushed, I was respected, and best of all I felt like a valued customer. The only complaint I have is the consistency of taste. I've ordered takeout and dined in quite a few times. Not every meal will taste exactly the same, and maybe my tastebuds are a little whacked out lol but the spider roll always seems to taste either bitter, or is too chewy. Me and my wife go here quite often and love the hospitality and friendliness of the staff. The Sushi here is also very good. It's a nice environment and gives you a different flare of food that you don't typically get in Stafford. We were working in Stafford for a couple of weeks and had the opportunity to try many of the highest rated restaurants. This was one of the few that proved to live up to its rating. If you want a boat in Hawaii for this price, you will get a smaller boat with only california roll lol. Please.. GET THE SUSHI BOAT!!!! We got the boat for lovers. Soooo worth it. I believe it was about $52. My husband and i can eat the heck out of sushi, and we were struggling to breathe on our last slice of sashimi lol. Not to mention we got desert on the house!! Went to Sake during my lunch break and the customer service was A1 from the jump. As soon as I was seated I had my waitress awaiting my drink order. The spring rolls were absolutely delicious. I have been waiting for this place to open ever since the "come soon" sign was posted. I love Thai food and LOVE sushi, but Stafford just doesn't have a place to fulfill my cravings (yes, I know about the Kobe but good gravy is that place expensive!) I went here with my mother with great expectations and for the most part they were met. However one very big expectation was not met at all, and that expectation was service. To start, our waitress seemed oddly nervous which made me immediately start wondering. Things started making sense however when she brought out my mothers Bento box and not my two sushi orders, then how I had to wait for an annoyingly long time for her to bring my order. I actually started picking off my mothers. This made me think that perhaps she was nervous that she was going to get yelled at by us for slow service. From the previous reviews I wouldn't be surprised. Honestly! I would have rated this place higher had it not been for that. In fact I do feel the food makes this is more of a 3 1/2-4 star place. An unorganized kitchen unfortunately is unacceptable in my book, and therefore I stick by my rating. To get to the food.... Appetizer: Chicken Satay: 5 stars. Perfectly cooked. The peanut sauce had a great coconut hint to it, and the small cucumber salad "thing" that came with it brought a nice freshness to the dish. Soup: Chicken Tom Kha: 4.5 stars. The flavor of this soup was out of this world. It had so much going on that I can't even pin point what I liked best about it, but the creaminess of the coconut did stand out. I rate this 4.5 stars only because the chef left slices of lemon grass and a very large slice of galangas (a milder ginger-like root) that I found texturally unpleasant. When I asked the chef about it, though, he told me it was a normal way to serve the soup and not a kitchen accident so my rating is totally personal. The soup is definitely worth trying though! Main Courses: Chicken Pad Thai Bento Box: 3 stars. This was an okay Bento box but not as good as the ones served at Miso of route 1. The Pad Thai was lacking a little flavor for my palate even though my mother liked it just fine, and the chicken shumai was very dry. This was sadly a pretty lunch but not an incredibly tasty one. Mexican Roll: 3.5 stars. This was not bad, but I have had a Mexican roll in Las Vegas that blows this one away. They could do a little more with the presentation too (that is, only if it wouldn't mean a longer wait for it....). Spicy Salmon Cocktail: 5 stars. This was just how I like it; fresh, cold, and actually spicy. This couldn't have been better for my personal taste. I like have it could in a martini glass too. Good presentation. Overall, I did like the food here, but not enough to visit again if I have the time to drive to Miso on route 1. Also, if I do visit I don't know if I'll be eating in for fear of unorganized service. I hope the owner and chef gets his kitchen working more smoothly because he really does have that the right menu in the right town. read more

They have all things that are good. Finally a new restaurant in Stafford. And it's really freaking good! They were busy but we only waited about 10 minutes to sit. The booths have curtains which we asked our waiter to close. So cute and intimate! Big plus on atmosphere. Good music too. We started with the Chicken Satay and Crab Gold Purse both of which were delicious. The Satay was 4 pieces of chicken and 2 dipping sauces. One a sweet and spicy peanut sauce, the other a sweet and tangy thai cucumber and onion sauce. Owhmahgawds. So yummy. The Crab Gold Purse was everything Crab Rangoon is supposed to be but never is. It actually tastes like crab with a slight sweet cream cheese flavor that is instantly balanced with the light sharp bite of the onion. The wonton is a perfect gold and nicely crisp and the sweet and spicy dipping sauce adds even more layers to this simple but so often ruined dish. These are perfection here. We ordered alcohol at this point. Fuji Apple Sake and Tiger lager. The sake was like biting into a fresh apple and then taking a swig of sake and right where sake usually has an odd finish the apple comes back and gives it a sweet finish. Too easy to drink a lot. They had a good selection of Asian beers and Tiger is always a nice one. I wish they had Asahi Dry and Asahi Black. Then we had two sushi rolls. The Alaska and the Mexican. Alaska was delicious. Really nice crab. The Mexican was crunchy shrimp tempura roll with spicy sauce. So spicy. You can taste all of the delicious flavors and then the heat hits. And it's hot. But not too much. If you don't like spicy, don't get it. If you like spicy but are afraid of thai heat, get it; it's not too spicy. We finished with the fried donuts. Put them in your mouth!!! The texture of the donuts is perfection. The dipping sauce was a little dubious with the few scattered sprinkles of all things but it was very tasty and we finished it all. The service we had was also very good. Our waiter seemed a little nervous and new but we had him joking pretty quickly. He was attentive but not overly and he was very polite. Each course came with a few minutes in between. Great dining pace. Not too fast and not too slow. Take a moment to savor where you are and what you are eating. This place is a little pricy. I'm happy to report that things were much better this time. We visited at lunch time. We were immediately seated, drink order was taken quickly, and service was swift and friendly. We got the same appetizer (spring rolls) which were piping hot and delicious. I ordered the Basil Sauce with chicken and some sushi, while my husband had only sushi. We had no complaints about any of the food. The basil sauce chicken had lots of flavor with just the right amount of heat (I ordered it medium spicy) and a nice portion for the lunch special. Spicy tuna roll sushi was great - lots of fish and big pieces. My husband loved the sushi he ordered as well. It was a bit pricey for lunch, so we'll probably only go back for a nice dinner, but I'm so happy things were better at this visit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After eagerly anticipating the opening of a Thai restaurant in Stafford, we visited Sake Thai on opening night. Front of the house impressions: There were several large tables open, plus various booths and other tables around the restaurant. The hostess informed us that we would have to wait a few minutes since they were full. (?) She did not take a name or give a time we would have to wait. There was a gentleman ahead of us who waited patiently but left before being seated. That would be a common theme of the evening. We only waited for a few minutes before being seated and while the hostess was a lovely woman, she did not seem to have very much experience as front of the house. She almost bypassed the couple after us and sat a couple that just walked in the door. She was frazzled and hurried which sort of set the tone for the evening. There were also several people waiting to pick up to-go orders and there didn't seem to be any kind of organization for those customers. We waited for at least 10 minutes before our waiter came to take our drink order. We just ordered everything at once (spring rolls, drunken noodles, and panang curry). While we waited for our food, we could hear/see a large table inquire on how much longer they would have to wait for their food. I don't know the whole story, but the entire table left before being served. Our spring rolls came out pretty quickly but were nothing special. The sweet and sour sauce was fine but again, we've had better at other Thai restaurants. They were warm but not piping hot. Another man approached the hostess and asked about THEIR food and said they had been waiting over 45 minutes for their appetizer. Their entire party also left without being served food. After about 30-40 minutes of waiting for our food, our waiter came back to inform me that the kitchen was out of drunken noodles. Needless to say, I was not happy, especially since it had been about 30 minutes since I had ordered...why did it take so long to tell me? I ordered an alternative and hoped for the best. It turns out that they had ONE order of drunken noodles left and I got it (perhaps one of the dishes from a party that deserted the restaurant?) and it was the worst drunken noodles I've ever had. There was NO spice or heat (despite being listed as Spicy on the menu), the chicken was pretty flavorless...it was just bland. I asked for some chili to put on it and our waiter brought the little caddy of pepper flakes, jalapenos, and Thai chilis. The Thai chilis helped give some heat, but the flavor was still lacking. My husband's Panang Curry was better than my dish with a little bit of heat and much more flavor, but it was still not on par with other Panang Curry dishes from other Thai restaurants. Side note: the restaurant had Creedence Clearwater Revival on repeat almost the entire time we were there. It was not relaxing dinner music...but they did put more appropriate relaxing Thai music on about five minutes before we left. I hope this was a case of first-night opening jitters because Stafford really needs a good Thai restaurant. There needs to be more front of house management, organization, communication, and customer service. While everyone was friendly, there didn't seem to be much accountability or apology for all of the tables leaving and unhappy patrons. We may visit again in a few months to give them some time to get into the swing of things, but I just hope they last that long. read more

This place was a nightmare of a dining experience. We get in and try to order drinks- no liquor license. We order food and it takes 45 minutes for half of it to come out and another 15 for the rest of it. The portions were too small, so we decided to order more food. 20 minutes later they said it will be another 15 minutes. Then we asked for our checks. The waiter comes out with one check, even though he told us we would receive separate checks. Now we're waiting for our separate checks, and I've been sitting here long enough that I'm annoyed enough to feel the need to write a bad review. Don't come here! Wait staff was attentive without meing stalker-like, food was really quite delicious. and the portions were large enough to have lunch leftovers. Went here for the first time today. We were in time for the lunch specials. We started with the calamari appetizer and were plesently surprised. Next we ordered the sushi option and the bento box option. The sushi was on the smaller side (but what do you expect for a lunch special) the curry had a nice base but flavor as well as a mild heat intensity. Hubby also ordered a spicy soup (he thought it has too much fish oil) and a thai tea. The atmosphere is nice and be be intimate if you are lucky enough to get a booth with curtains. My husband and I ate here the other night, and I was impressed (though to be fair, I had extremely low expectations). We ordered: Spicy Tuna Cocktail: delicious! I think there was actually enough for 3 people, and the sauce was delicious. Big chunks of fresh tuna... hard to resist. Panang Curry: I didn't realize how large the portion was until I ate about 1/3 of it, and it looked as though I had barely touched it. The curry was delicious (got it with chicken... lots of, as well as plenty of carrots), and I had another feast for lunch the next day. Pad Thai: very well done, and again, huge portions. They really don't skimp on anything here - flavor included! Papa Dragon Roll: I'm not a big fan of shrimp tempura "sushi" rolls... but it was pretty good. They do seem to use good quality fish, although I don't know how fresh it really is since the place isn't packed... (lots of people = lots of fish getting pushed through = fresh) All in all, I'm really glad we found this place because they do have a really good thai and sushi menu and it's close to where we live. The prices are decent, and as I mentioned, I had plenty of left overs from the Panang curry and pad thai. Our waiter was great! He was very attentive and took really good care of us - he brought me a full container of fresh rice after he packed up my curry saying, "you can't have curry without good rice." *warm and fuzzies!* And we sat in a cabana-style booth, which was very nice and private, considering how big the place is.
