Came here since it was my sister's birthday and she wanted to come at this place, so we did. Had to be on a 30 minute wait list since it was a Saturday and it was pretty busy, but when it was finally time, we were able to be seated. We chose to sit in a booth this time because the teppanyaki was going to be an even longer wait, but we've tried teppanyaki before here, and it was a pleasant experience. The waiter was very nice and attentive, never failed to check up on us when we needed refills or anything else. We got chicken katsu as well as hot and spicy chicken and some takoyaki and bacon fried rice. Everything came out tasting delicious! Especially the hot and spicy chicken, that was very tender. Prices can be a bit steep but you get a good portion of food to eat so I won't complain much on that. I was absolutely disgusted leaving this place. We sit down and I notice a cockroach crawling behind my friend. They apologise and we proceed to order. I ordered salmon and there was a plastic piece left on it... The chef comes out to apologise. Then, another cockroach appears and we are now so disgusted that we had to leave. This place is honestly so bad. I took my wife there for her birthday and we got some soft shell crab roll which is some of the more expensive rolls. Our rolls came badly rolled, the soft shell crab was pre-cook aka old crab that was re-deep fried and barely had any taste in them anymore. On top of that, before we were about to leave, a waiter was cleaning the walls and wipe across a paper that was taped onto the wall, about 6-7 cockroach came out from behind the paper. Went to this restaurant yesterday and I was highly impressed with the ambiance; simple Japanese style without being gaudy. Our server, Katie was the most pleasant, friendly and attentive server I've ever had. She made us feel like VIPs. She kept checking on us and refilling our beverages and asking us if everything was OK. The food was excellent. Best fried rice I've had. It didn't need any additions and the shrimp was nice and fresh. The Rainbow Roll was generous and delicious as was the seaweed salad. Although they used to put crab in it and now they don't. I was going to eat the veggies and the rice and save the left of the meal and the extra rice for my husband. When the cook mention everything who was going to eat what and we told him what we wanted. I didn't mention the extra rice but when the cook was serving the rice he had just enough bowls for the people on the table and so I did t mention anything because he had already finished cooking the rice. So I thought as long as they don't charge me for it am ok. The cook was cooking as always it was first the rice, Then The meat, then the veggies, and at last the beans sprouts. So he serves everything as he goes, and when he finish he just say thank you and we would give him a tip. He was very nice. He asked us at the beginning, "are you guys celebrating something?" And I told him no, we are just hungry! So every time he would serve something he would say because you are hungry! He was being funny and it suited him. Usually this type of food it's a little pricey and a lot of people just come here to eat when they are celebrating something. We heard like 4 times Birthday song singing by the waitresses while we were there. But we were just hungry. Hahaha! At the end we were almost done and we asked for containers to go. I didn't say anything else. I was not going to argue. I just didn't leave a tip. Because it was clearly that they did charge me for the extra rice and I didn't get any rice. This place is the definition of "hit or miss." Sometimes, you get blessed with an amazing chef. He's joking around the entire night and seasoning the food to perfection. I understand that mistakes happen and some nights can be rough, I worked in the food industry too. But a place as expensive as this restaurant needs to be more consistent. Usually go to the Nees location but the service there has been terrible lately so we decided to go here. Tappenyaki was a bit busy but the regular dining wasn't so much. We didn't want to wait for the tappenyaki so we decided to take a table. We got seated right away. The ways this place is set up is they kept the dinning table and the sushi bar close to the front and all of the tappenyaki in the back room. I ordered the lunch special came with soup, salad, white rice, chicken katsu, California roll and tempura all for $13. We wanted the bacon fried rice but our server made it seem like we couldn't have it. She said it's only for the tappenyaki and we weren't allowed to switch it. Which I never quite understood why it would be so difficult to make fried rice to serve to the NON tappenyaki diners. Anyways we got it separately it was almost $10 for a plate of fried rice. I will not be coming back here, I would definitely skip this restaurant. It's crazy how the two restaurants Sakura Chaya Clovis and Fresno can vary so drastically in food, food quality, and service. The Fresno store is not great to be honest, but this Clovis restaurant has an extremely lower quality in food and the Sushi rolls look totally different than Fresno. We came here thinking it's going to be similar to their other restaurant in Fresno, but it's vastly different from what we expected, since we've gone to Sakura Chaya Fresno once in a while. Management should really take a look at this. We ordered two combination dinners and TWO 50/50 rolls. The 50/50 Rolls are extremely smaller and there's less pieces than the Fresno store, they aren't as wide, and the rolls look totally different like it's from totally different restaurants. The topping of the roll doesn't have the other ingredients that Fresno has, and it really looks naked and skimmed down. There's no dressing or anything on the rolls or anything. They look very mediocre. Also, they don't have the ice cream from the Fresno store. The Fresno store has red bean ice cream, this store didn't have the red bean ice cream option. And even though it's one ice cream, the Fresno store allows us mix to choose smaller balls of the different flavors. This store wouldn't allow us to choose different flavors. Given the higher prices of their food, you really would be expected at least the same and consistent quality/quantity of food that you'd expect and used to. The prices are the same as Fresno store. It's just really surprising how significantly different they are. We will definitely not be going back to this restaurant. read more
