First time here with some family. We came during the beginning of the week at 8pm and the door said they close at 9pm. They told us it'll take 10 minutes because they have to clean a booth. We waited for a bit and eventually were seated. I know we came in late for dinner and I'm sure they weren't too thrilled. I don't blame them. I'm sure it was a long and busy day and everyone was ready to go. Nonetheless, our server was attentive, no bs, straightforward, but there was something sweet about her. Wow, generous portions, beautiful presentation, delicious food and friendly service. Katie is the best! We had a large table, and she was communicative and sweet. I was looking at the entree ("appetizer") salads, and couldn't find photos to see what I was getting. So I settled on the Beef Shabu Shabu Salad (though Katie highly recommends the beef sashimi salad). It was enormous and delicious. The dressing was a savory creamy sauce, reminiscent of a satay. We had dinner reservations of four last Saturday (7/18/26) to celebrate birthday for one of our family members. Three of members ordered "Teppan Yaki", but I ordered "Grilled Mackerel" with a bowl of steamed rice. Mackerel was supposed to be seasoned only with salt, but it was almost restless and rice was dry and hard. I honestly thought it was not worth the money, but I didn't want to say anything to destroy the celebratory atmosphere. We completed dinner and nothing was happened to me that night. However, I had to rushed to the bathroom at 6:30 next morning for explosive diarrhea, upset stomach and nausea. It lasted almost two days and I even had to call off work on Monday. I was finally able to eat pieces of crackers late Monday evening. I decided to notify the restaurant regarding my incident and call them tonight (7/21/26) at around 8 pm right before their closing time. When I asked for the store manager, a young female voice replied. I explained my experience and I told I even canceled my work because of my condition. But to my surprise, her response was very casual "l'm sorry, that was happened to you, I'll report the general manager". It lasted for an only a few minutes, and she didn't even take my name or my contact information. If it was full blown food poisoning, I would not hesitate to report to the local health department. The way she treated me was very disappointing and it left me unsettling feeling. I had never written any reviews before, but this is for food safety issue. It makes me wonder how is their cooking process and food reservations methods. I can't not recommend this restaurant because I don't want anyone to go through the agony I experienced. read more

Had a craving for sushi so went for dinner this past weekend. Big mistake. Walking in, I noticed either their AC was not running or was really, really weak.. I mean, in the teppanyaki area it would probably be warm but we sat at the front of the restaurant, at the sushi bar. Mind you, this is end of May in Fresno, so it was triple digits outside. Please turn on the AC.. it was NOT pleasant to be inside your restaurant. It was probably 80 degrees in there. When we left, it was honestly cooler outside than it was inside. That that was 7PM! Wasn't a deal breaker so we proceeded to order a Sushi Special and a Red Dragon from the sushi bar. Not a bad amount of food for what you pay for and the fish appeared fresh and presentation was great. One huge problem; the ingredients in the roll including the raw fish was warm. I'm assuming because the restaurant was hot, or because their refrigeration wasn't strong enough at the sushi bar? Shouldn't the fish on display be kept over ice? I noticed the fish on display didn't seem cooled. Sushi rolls should never be hot unless it was baked/fried! This made made the nigiri and roll seriously gross to eat. Avocado was hot, crab meat was hot, cucumber was hot, fish was hot... sorry but, it was awful. Nothing bad to say about the service, sushi chef and waitress were attentive and fast. Great service. I think that, all things considered, this is the best teppanyaki place around. There are no real surprises here, and everything is pretty good. Went here recently for lunch with a group on a Friday. All seemed well initially. Waters, soup, and salads came in a timely fashion. As we were waiting for the chef, we noticed we had been seated at our griddle for 50 minutes. The chef did finally come. The food was good. I got the "trio," which included steak, shrimp, and chicken. What I especially liked was that nothing was over salted. I do wonder if one and a half shrimp was correct for my lunch, though. That's what I got. All in all, we were there for almost two hours, which is just way too long for lunch. read more

Unfortunately this place has really let me down. Any previous experience with this specific location has been average; taste of food, cleanliness, and service. We made a reservation today for right when they reopened at 4:30. We walked in and were semi greeted by the hostess around 4:15 and used both gender restrooms. Both were filthy. As we returned to the lobby area to wait to be seated, the lobby area was also disgusting. There were pieces of trash on the bench area as well as the floor looked like it hadn't been mopped in a week. I would imagine that in the time they are "closed" they would be attentive to the restroom and other areas. We decided to leave immediately and will not return until they step up their cleaning procedures. I had teppanyaki here a few years ago. I had a good experience. The food was good. I thought this would also translate to good food and good service for regular dining as well. I was wrong. I went to the website where it said I could make reservations, so I called and made them. I was only heading in for regular dining rather than teppanyaki, but no one asked when I made the call. When I arrived, I was told they did not take reservations for regular dining. There was no mention of this on the website or over the phone. Sure, there was no wait and we were seated immediately, but what if there had been a wait? Would they have still honored the fact they allowed me to make the reservation? I should have known this was just the beginning of a disappointing evening. Because we like to eat from different parts of the menu, I let our server know ahead of time that it would be okay for them to just bring everything together. Basically, no need to ensure appetizers are first or anything. Just bringing them things out when they are done. She looked at me and immediately said she would just bring things out when they were done. I would have been completely fine with this except she was rude. She was in a rush. We were never given refills. When I got the check, she circled the suggested tips. We ordered fried rice, teriyaki chicken, teriyaki New York steak, chicken wings, and calamari. The only dish that had any flavor was the fried rice. The portion was big as well. I liked the Miso soup, but I was not a fan of the salad. I asked for sauce on the side for the teriyaki dishes. It was a compromise since one person in our party is not fond of sweet sauces. Chicken and steak? Bland. Once we poured the sauce on half, the flavor was immediately improved. The chicken teriyaki is a big portion. Chicken wings? Bland. Calamari? Bland. I could understand why the chicken, steak, and calamari were bland. They had accompanying sauces. First time I've went that we ate at a regular table instead of the teppanyaki. It was nice. We got way more food. Booths were very spacious and comfy. Fit size of us. We went at lunch and got one plate of the fried rice and it fed all of us with a ton left to take home. It was $15. Great deal. I got a plate of the chicken. Also $15. But it's way more than you would get if you went and had it cooked it front of you. Of course you have to get the hot and spicy sauce. Service was fast. Waitress was great on refills. To start off my family were ordering our appetizers, and the waitress said to me and my dad, have to get two types of sashimi (raw fish) instead of one type of sashimi. The fish was fishy, thinly sliced, the Hamachi had huge pieces of the red gamey bloodline through it, and the rolls were loosely rolled so they all fell apart. The tempura was tiny, soggy and tasted like it was fried and stacked and refrigerated hours before. My first thought was, this is why you don't order sushi in Fresno, which was probably unfair. The second thought was, don't order sushi in a teppanyaki place, which is probably the real answer. But there was a full sushi counter and it was busy. Came here since it was my sister's birthday and she wanted to come at this place, so we did. Had to be on a 30 minute wait list since it was a Saturday and it was pretty busy, but when it was finally time, we were able to be seated. We chose to sit in a booth this time because the teppanyaki was going to be an even longer wait, but we've tried teppanyaki before here, and it was a pleasant experience. The waiter was very nice and attentive, never failed to check up on us when we needed refills or anything else. We got chicken katsu as well as hot and spicy chicken and some takoyaki and bacon fried rice. Everything came out tasting delicious! Especially the hot and spicy chicken, that was very tender. Prices can be a bit steep but you get a good portion of food to eat so I won't complain much on that. This place is honestly so bad. I took my wife there for her birthday and we got some soft shell crab roll which is some of the more expensive rolls. Our rolls came badly rolled, the soft shell crab was pre-cook aka old crab that was re-deep fried and barely had any taste in them anymore. The waiters were super grumpy and in a rush for us to order. On top of that, before we were about to leave, a waiter was cleaning the walls and wipe across a paper that was taped onto the wall, about 6-7 cockroach came out from behind the paper. We waited at the bar until our table was ready, it was just us at the table, but the chef was just as enthusiastic and friendly as the other times we've visited with a full table. Went to this restaurant yesterday and I was highly impressed with the ambiance; simple Japanese style without being gaudy. Our server, Katie was the most pleasant, friendly and attentive server I've ever had. She made us feel like VIPs. She kept checking on us and refilling our beverages and asking us if everything was OK. The food was excellent. Best fried rice I've had. It didn't need any additions and the shrimp was nice and fresh. The Rainbow Roll was generous and delicious as was the seaweed salad. Although they used to put crab in it and now they don't. I didn't mention the extra rice but when the cook was serving the rice he had just enough bowls for the people on the table and so I did t mention anything because he had already finished cooking the rice. So I thought as long as they don't charge me for it am ok. The cook was cooking as always it was first the rice, Then The meat, then the veggies, and at last the beans sprouts. So he serves everything as he goes, and when he finish he just say thank you and we would give him a tip. He was very nice. He asked us at the beginning, "are you guys celebrating something?" And I told him no, we are just hungry! So every time he would serve something he would say because you are hungry! He was being funny and it suited him. Usually this type of food it's a little pricey and a lot of people just come here to eat when they are celebrating something. We heard like 4 times Birthday song singing by the waitresses while we were there. But we were just hungry. Hahaha! At the end we were almost done and we asked for containers to go. It is a lot of food. Then the waitress came and I asked her about My extra rice. She said did they charge you for it and I showed her the receipt and she said no. They didn't charge you. I told her yes they did there is a line for the extra rice. Because rice is 6 dollars and it was only one line like that. She said no. It is the rice you had on your order. I didn't say anything else. I was not going to argue. I just didn't leave a tip. Because it was clearly that they did charge me for the extra rice and I didn't get any rice. It was a mistake on Both parts on mine behalf because I didn't reminded them about my rice, And on theirs because they shouldn't have charged me for the rice I didn't get. On the other hand service was good, food was delicious. So I am missing pictures of the a actual dinner because we were so hungry that we forgot about it. Oh Man!! our experience here at Sakura Chaya was less than satisfactory. we were served our beverages, we got some fountain drinks and we all got water. the water tastes awful, the soda was flat and when we sent it back, the waitress, Tammy said "i've served you before, you always complain." we have never been to Sakura Chaya. i ordered a dragon roll, and calamari. the calamari was good but my roll did not look...right. it tasted burnt??? and did not fit the description of what i thought i had ordered.
