I would say that the effort put behind the food is high, but sometimes when you overreach you tend to miss the target. The food was fine... the fried rice was very salty due to the high amount of soy sauce it was drenched in. The proteins were adequate, but had "rubbery" texture to it which makes me believe all the meats are frozen, then thawed for service. I'm thinking back on the meal and nothing stood out... This week, on May 11, my wife and I went to Sakura to celebrate a belated anniversary. My wife had been there before and for me it was my first time. I had made the reservation for 5:30 pm for Hibachi. We were sat next to a mother and her teenage son. My wife and I ordered the Seafood Deluxe dinner. The other diners one ordered chicken and the other one the filet mignon. The cook was as expected a showman preparing the food in front of us. The placed a selection of vegetables on a side of the grill and then on another section of the grill he added ingredients to the rice to prepared fried. On different sections of the grill he placed our selection of seafood and then separately the chicken and the steak. He asked permission to send flying a piece of zucchini for to catch with our mouths. A couple of times he offered to us Sake with a squirt bottle and my wife and I accepted a shot. He waited until all the different proteins were cooked to serve us all. The quantity and the presentation were great. The seafood was hard, overcooked and not so flavorful as I have had it in other Japanese restaurants. The fried rice was also overcooked. I've been to Sakura twice now and both visits have been fantastic! The lunch specials are reasonably priced and the food is consistently high quality. The servers are friendly, and the ambiance is quiet and relaxing--perfect for a casual meal. The first time, I tried the sashimi with a side of rice (for an extra charge) and it was delicious. On my second visit, I had the two-roll special with Alaska and Philadelphia rolls--loved that there wasn't too much rice on the rolls. We went here while visiting Los Cruces . We went for dinner on a Friday night . They were busy but we got a table right away . The service was good . We ordered the Egg & Vegetable fried rice . This was really good had broccoli , peas carrots . It was a big serving that could be shared . We ordered the Katsu chicken. This was tender & breaded crispy . Didn't do the grill table so I was able to be seated upstairs (surprise! There's an upstairs!!) quickly. It was quiet, which was nice but we were not ignored which is always a fear when you sit somewhere outside the exciting places or where all the action is. I moved here from the east coast and have been hesitant to try sushi this far from water. Until Sakura, I've been disappointed. I ordered a lunchtime teriyaki bento box with salmon and it was delicious. The salmon was crispy on the edges and not overcooked. The teriyaki was perfectly flavored without being too sweet. The miso was just right in temperature and had plenty of seaweed and tofu bits. One miss was that I asked for no cucumber in the California roll, and there was cucumber. It's ok, I just push the slivers out and enjoy them anyway. And I added a yellowtail roll. Oh yes! The fish was melt in your mouth texture, perfectly balanced with the rice and seaweed wrap. Such a rip-off. The rolls are TINY and mediocre tasting at best. My wife liked the tempura, but the poration was also small. I can not in good conscience recommend Sakura. Don't waste your money. Great spot! I've been looking for a very decent sushi place here in town for over a year now. Hands down one of the better places. This was hard to find being from Bay Area of California this gave me the flavor the fill and helped with that craving for it. When we first walked in we were greeted with a "Good Evening, how many in your party and what are you interested in?" (Asking Hibachi or regular dining) The place was clean no trash or food on the floor. All the tables were clean no dishes from previous parties and NOT STICKY! Over all the prices were great. For the amount they serve. Remember FLAVOR is what's here. The seating is comfortable just a little tight ( in layout of floor) but over all great peaceful ambiance of the place. Your not over crowded by everyone talking or walking past your spot. Depending on where your seated you maybe able to get a show from the hibachi tables while they are cooking. The only thing I was disappointed about was women's bathroom, they only have two stalls both of decent size. However someone from earlier that evening drink too much saki and puked in the women's bathroom and didn't clean up after themselves. I was not impressed. Had dinner here a couple of weeks ago before heading back to the mountains, and there was something fundamentally wrong with the sushi. It wasn't that it tasted bad, it just wasn't... good. It took me a couple of days of thinking to figure it out: it was the rice. I don't believe it was the proper white rice. The lighting was on the dim side, and I don't normally take photos of my food, thus I have no proof. It almost tasted like brown rice, which would be a very serious faux pas, I can't prove it and I really hope it wasn't! But when it comes to sushi, the rice is critical. It has to be the correct flavor, texture (stickiness), proper amount of vinegar, and depending on the type of sushi that you're getting, needs that little shmear of wasabi. There was just something distinctly wrong with the rice. I had fried spring rolls, a Philly roll, tamago - they list it as their egg omelette or something, and smoked salmon sashimi. The tamago was decent, though I wish they had used the correct name especially as my waiter didn't know it. Regardless, it isn't an omelette. Their iced tea wasn't very good, clearly over-steeped. The spring rolls were decent, served very hot, but not enough to redeem the sub-par sushi. Will I return? Probably not, there are other sushi places I'd rather try, plus I found out that an old favorite is still open. The place is a bit of a dump, it needs a top to bottom revamp. My sibling and I decided to have sushi for dinner. Coming from California, I didn't have high expectations but definitely wanted to fulfill my craving during this trip. We came with thirty minutes to spare since a lot of places tend to close early in Las Cruces. Of course since I'm not a local, it was something to adjust to but we were still treated with kindness and efficient service. Our orders came out super fast upon ordering. There was a few other parties that were doing hibachi so I was surprised at how quickly our orders came out. The food was good, my favorite would be the volcano roll because of the crispy exterior. I'm not a big fan of ponzu, so I didn't enjoy the blue crab avocado and uzumaki roll as much as I wish I did. However, the fish was fresh and delicious! Our server let us know that we can take our time eating and that there was no rush leaving. That was very sweet of them since there were multiple parties still present after closing. This is my go to restaurant for sashimi! To get the best bang for your buck I would recommend coming in for lunch instead of dinner. I would also recommend this restaurant for a celebration dinner since they have party platters. Party Platter:4 stars While they are expensive they're a better price then ordering individual rolls or sashimi. They are also more decorated so it brings in a wow factor to a dinner. While the sashimi wasn't the freshest I've had it still tasted good and were sliced perfectly. Sashimi box: 4.5 Compared to the Chirashi I think this item gives a better bang for the buck while satisfying your craving for sashimi. However, the salad is a bit disappointing due to the dressing and is a bit underwhelming. This is my go to item when I come here. However, there is less sashimi then in the chirahi so if you want more sashimi I would go with the chirashi instead. Came here on a Friday night after a day at White Sands. Based on the other reviews, we were hoping for a much better experience. First off, we were crammed into an upstairs seating arrangement that was very crowded and next to a large hibachi grill group who were being exceedingly loud. I could barely hear any of my friends across from me. The food itself was okay, but it arrived an hour after we finished ordering and most of the hot entrees were barely lukewarm (besides the udon soup noodles). I believe many entrees had to be transported via a food lift upstairs but that is still no excuse for nearly cold entrees. On top of all of this, they charged 18% tip by default, which was not disclosed beforehand. We were a large party, but this is something that is better disclosed ahead of time than a nasty surprise at the end of our visit. Additionally, the bathroom reeked and the faucets looked like they have not been cleaned for months. The windows had signs saying to not touch the windows because they could fall/break and customers would be liable... Needless to say, not the best dining environment either. Due to the long wait, nearly cold food served to us, and the undisclosed 18% mandatory tip, I rate this establishment two stars. read more

Maybe it's just high expectation coming from the Bay Area in CA, but we found good places in Phoenix/Chandler area of Arizona when we lived there too, but this place is not worth the price in my family's opinion. With dinner entrees, you now have only a salad or a miso cup, not both. Granted the restaurant was hosting multiple bigger parties sitting at the Habachi areas, so I feel like the staff was rushing to cater to as many people in as little time as possible so the people sitting at regular tables were not getting the same attention as the Habachi areas. Due to all the Habachi areas being used along with the amount of people in the restaurant, it was also uncomfortably warm making the ambiance, even before we ate, a little annoying. Our waiter did not explain the changes to the menu as far as what came with each dish, nor did he remember to bring our entire party utensils or refills throughout our meal. We had to ask him for utensils multiple times even after each person had their food. The food was lackluster and parts of the main entrees like the vegetables were cold and watery. One person ordered a salad that had very minimal dressing and needed to ask people at table for some sauce to liven the dish up. A small platter for soy sauce and wasabi was also not supplied to us with sushi order which I thought very weird along with no chopsticks. We thought it would take a different turn upon dessert when we asked for green tea ice cream, but it was only premade in tempura batter and could not be ordered alone, so we passed. Wow I was blown away! First of all if you are in a small group or by yourself sit at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are incredibly nice and spend a long time on the presentation of each dish! It is so much fun to watch them as they make each piece of art! Because the ocean is far away I sort of wimped out and didn't get anything too extravagant.
