Wow I was blown away! First of all if you are in a small group or by yourself sit at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are incredibly nice and spend a long time on the presentation of each dish! It is so much fun to watch them as they make each piece of art! Because the ocean is far away I sort of wimped out and didn't get anything too extravagant. I got the chicken tempura and shrimp tempura rolls. Both were absolutely delicious and I have every confidence that the rest of their rolls are great as well! Can't wait to come back! read more

Maybe it's just high expectation coming from the Bay Area in CA, but we found good places in Phoenix/Chandler area of Arizona when we lived there too, but this place is not worth the price in my family's opinion. With dinner entrees, you now have only a salad or a miso cup, not both. Granted the restaurant was hosting multiple bigger parties sitting at the Habachi areas, so I feel like the staff was rushing to cater to as many people in as little time as possible so the people sitting at regular tables were not getting the same attention as the Habachi areas. Due to all the Habachi areas being used along with the amount of people in the restaurant, it was also uncomfortably warm making the ambiance, even before we ate, a little annoying. Our waiter did not explain the changes to the menu as far as what came with each dish, nor did he remember to bring our entire party utensils or refills throughout our meal. We had to ask him for utensils multiple times even after each person had their food. The food was lackluster and parts of the main entrees like the vegetables were cold and watery. One person ordered a salad that had very minimal dressing and needed to ask people at table for some sauce to liven the dish up. A small platter for soy sauce and wasabi was also not supplied to us with sushi order which I thought very weird along with no chopsticks. We thought it would take a different turn upon dessert when we asked for green tea ice cream, but it was only premade in tempura batter and could not be ordered alone, so we passed. All in all, everyone at table agreed that this restaurant was overpriced for what it was. The best part of the meal was the miso soup. read more

I loved this place but lately I am super disappointed! The food is still tasty but instead of being juicy with plenty of their sauce....The hibachi scallops are almost dry! This has happened to my last three orders! And two out of the last three orders, the scallops were tiny instead of the usual big and meaty. The lack of sauce with my scallops and vegetables is a deal breaker. I won't be ordering from here again. I have spent a lot of money and it is getting less for what I'm paying for. I don't know how I happened by this place. But I can tell you it was by pure accident. You see, I was actually in search of a pizza place called "Zia Pizza Company". Imagine my surprise, not to mention vexed perplextion, when I discovered this place to be ostensibly closed (hey it was 7pm, so don't ask me!). I look to my right...and notice a Japanese hibachi style restaurant. Despite that not being my initial intentional goal for dinner tonight, I figure, "What the hey? I'm down for some impromptu culinary adventure". And so...in I go! I note the slightly fancy decorum, authentic sushi bar and promptly attentive hostess. I was seated within 2 minutes. However, things quickly turned dubious in the service department. Strange. It's like I've been having a run of mediocre to bad luck when it comes to service these days. Ah well. Moving on.. It took a good ten minutes, along with a nudge from the hostess herself before I was finally acknowledged by whom I assumed was supposed to wait on me for the evening. And what I was greeted with was...what I *think* was a server with a severe language barrier, accompanied with the personality of wallpaper; I couldn't even get a read on her. That's rare for me, considering I can read virtually EVERYONE! Yeah, she lacked any personality what so ever! Although, to her credit, she DID manage to force the most convincingly fake smile I've ever seen on a person. I dunno why. I wasn't even displaying my "resting bitch face" tonight or anything. Perhaps I made her nervous. Who knows? All I know is when I ordered my wine, she had absolutely no clue what I was talking about, despite me speaking perfect English. I had to literally point to the type of wine I was talking about on the menu. Yeah. THAT happened. O_O I should mention that after I ordered my glass of wine, it was served cold. This wouldn't really be a big deal except...I only ever order red wine. Yeah. It was weird, but not totally undrinkable. You all know me. I'm NEVER gonna reject a half way decent glass of wine! Tonight I ordered the lobster (of course). It was cooked nicely, seasoned well also. Not the best I've had...but definitely not bad at all! I would return for this dish. The appetizer shrimp were splendid, too. What caught my attention was the fried rice and how it was served. First of all, it was served separately from everything else on the plate. As in...in its own bowl. Okay? Not exactly traditional hibachi style (even if it wasn't prepared in front of me "real time" style...this should not matter)...but to be honest, this detail is trivial compared to the glaring elephant in the room: the rice itself was tragically under seasoned. How under seasoned, you ask?? Well, put it this way: four passes of low sodium soy sauce and two passes of table salt later...I was finally able to enjoy my Asian inspired side dish. Sakura isn't an epic fail by any means. But I would be lying if I said I haven't had better. And by better, I mean like...there once was this small place in Fayetteville, NC called "Miyabi Jr.". They served hibachi style food. Of course the reason for the namesake is because they were literally the short order edition of hibachi cooking. Yet they were far more memorable than Sakura here. Obviously, the lobster was the best part of the whole meal; the fried rice was the most lackluster, but not totally unenjoyable. The main drag of the evening was, once again, the service. The waitress might have visited me all of four times throughout the whole night, she barely could understand was I was saying, and like I said earlier...she had the personality of wallpaper. The New Mexico roll and Lohman roll are the non spicy entrees. Their rolls are good but pricey and fairly small amount. You'll pay for the nice effort put into making these rolls. With Las Cruces having mostly fast food and Mexican cuisines, one cannot complain over something different and authentic Japanese. read more

I wouldn't expect to find good sushi in the Southwest so far from the Pacific. Unfortunately, at least temporarily, i am unable to eat sushi but my wife enjoyed it very much. I settled for for the steak teriyaki lunch. Not only was the steak tender but the teriyaki sauce was the best I have ever had. Often, teriyaki is too sweet or sticky for my tastes. This was neither of those but quite savory. The ambience was modern and eclectic. The service was prompt , polite and efficient. All in all a good experience. I would certainly go back. read more

Fun hibachi chefs making good food in front of you as you sit around the grill. This is always a good time, especially for kids. I can't leave 5 stars, however, for a few reasons: 1. Alcoholic beverages would have been better a little cooler 2. There is little space to wait for friends although a few chairs at the sushi bar could solve that 3. The restaurant feels as if it could be cleaned a little better. No concerns about the food hygiene, more about floors and windows and such. 4. Let me just say that this was the most unpleasant dining experience I have ever had in my life. First of all, when we walked in, there was a man at the hostess area (who I assume is the manager/owner) and he was taking an order on the phone. I eagerly waited for him to finish, as my parents and I had checked out this place online and were excited to try it out, and understood that the phone order that he was currently taking was his immediate priority. Once finished, I thought he would greet us and at the very least address us, but he never once glanced up and appeared to shift his attention to organizing a pile of receipts on the counter. After a few minutes, he seemed to finally notice that he had new customers who had come in--keep in mind that there were no other customers at the front either. When he finally addressed us, we weren't even greeted--no "Hi" or "How are you?" or anything like that, just "Can I help you?" in a very condescending tone. Immediately this already put me off and it should have been my sign to leave. However, we decided to stay and try it out and sat down at a table. The restaurant itself is pretty small and there were probably only 3 or 4 other parties inside when we were sat. Even with the place mostly empty, it took awhile before we got any service. Though she got busy later on, the server was nice and was accommodating. My main complaint is with the owner/manager. Aside from our initial encounter with him, I could see him continually eyeing us from the hostess area throughout our entire meal, like we didn't have place here. I thought I could give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that the rest of the experience would be pleasant, but I just felt extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome here. There was also this one lady off on the side who appeared to be his wife; she was mainly watching over the restaurant and would help out some of the servers sometimes. However, she also seemed to reflect the same tone as her husband. When our server was busy, we tried flagging down the manager/owner and his wife, as they were walking around and seemed to be helping customers out. We tried multiple times and was blatantly ignored each time. I'm not sure if it was because we were the only Asian family eating inside at the time (everyone else was caucasian or hispanic) but I've never encountered this type of rudeness before--especially at an Asian restaurant. The disparity between the manager's tone in greeting us and other customers was significant, almost patronizing the others while he was very curt and dismissive with us. Don't work in customer service if you're gonna be selective with who you give service to and expect to just pick and choose your customers. As for the food, we got the Lohman Roll, Shrimp and Chicken Hibachi Entree, Seafood Miso Soup, Steak Yakisoba, and Nabeyaki Udon Soup. The roll was actually pretty good and the best thing we had. Hibachi entree was decent too but kind of dry. Yakisoba fell kinda flat for me and was also oily. The soups were extremely bland--almost flavorless. We couldn't even finish it. The portions were also very small. TLDR; Nice server and mediocre food (only good thing was the sushi) but the tone and attitude from the owner/manager was extremely rude, disrespectful, and condescending. I've never felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome dining in an establishment. Will never come here again and I suggest you save your money and take it somewhere more worthwhile. read more

We went there Saturday for dinner and sat in the restaurant (not at the stations where they prepare food). It was an extremely unpleasant experience as the noise from the area where groups sit around a station to watch food prepared was deafening. Apparently, they believe that what makes it special for those there for the food performance is banging pot lids and slamming the knife on the countertop almost the entire time. The restaurant is one big open area so there isn't really any separation for the "regular" restaurant area. It was a horrible experience; we couldn't even have a conversation across our table. Never again. We have gone there a few times for lunch and it's like a different place - just quiet dining at the tables. The food is pretty good. We usually get one of the special rolls and a couple appetizers. Their shrimp shumai and vegetable gyozas are favorite choices. My advice would be -avoid the place at all costs around dinner time unless you are taking a bunch of small children who think it's cool to watch a grown man act like a fool. read more

Went in on a Wednesday night for dinner and the place was packed! Would recommend making a reservation if possible. Can't speak for the hibachi side, but the sushi was unfortunately disappointing. The best things on the menu were the fried rice (soooooo tasty!) and the spicy scallop handroll (the tempura flakes mixed in was a nice touch). I was here a couple of years ago and I had one of their boxed lunches which was pretty good. I placed an order today and was told that it would be at least a 40 minute wait because they were really busy. I ended up waiting close to an hour but whatever. I decided to try some of their rolls because I didn't have any on my last visit and honestly, I was disappointed. Most of the rolls on their specialty list are $12 and over, which is a tad expensive for my tastes, but I was willing to give some a try. Some of the rolls come in pieces of 6 and others come in pieces of 8. Its not a huge difference but the rolls divided into 6 pieces are slightly smaller than the rolls that are in 8 pieces. I tried their signature "Sakura" roll and it didn't agree with me. They use a soy bean wrap instead of seaweed and I did not like the flavor at all. There are so many ingredients for this thing that most of them are placed on top instead of contained in the roll. I had to shovel through the massive pile before I even saw the roll itself. I can see why its $16 but ugh, I'm definitely avoiding this in the future. For the price I paid for these rolls I could have bought twice as many of their cheaper rolls. Next time I come back I'll do that or stick to the boxed meals. read more

It was a huge portion though so I had to give in and put the leftovers in the fridge. Highly recommend. I made a reservation for a standard table but the hostess attempted to seat us at the hibachi table. So after a few minutes of waiting we were finally led to a table that was not very clean. In general the atmosphere was a bit dingy and in need of renovations. The waitress was wearing a mask under her nose... wear it or leave it. The food; My miso soup I ordered was luke warm, my spring rolls turned out hot, crispy and tasty. My main course order was the Tofu teriyaki. The tofu was completely void of any flavor and the bed of steamed vegetables was the same (absolutely bland, no salt, pepper or any other spice). One of my favorite restaurants in town! High quality sushi with many vegetarian options on the menu, such as the inari sushi and many many vegetable sushi rolls. They also have vegetarian gyoza! The atmosphere inside is also very moody (in a good way) and it isn't something you generally see in Las Cruces! The wait staff is sweet and the water tastes good. The prices make sense for the level of dining, and the range of the menu is very impressive. A little bit chilly inside in some places, so bring a jacket! I heavily recommend the aforementioned Inari roll as well as the octopus nigiri and sashimi. And the rainbow roll is also lovely. read more

Since they do not speak English (one does), you must go through your server. This takes the fun out of sitting there. Although on occasion I have noticed that they will hand us our sushi from behind the bar. I sent a friend who tried to order Tuna Tekka Maki. They didn't know what it was. It's mini rolls with one item in the middle (see photo of Avocado Roll). This is because chefs are Chinese not Japanese so you need to be patient. But again, this may have changed as the staff has changed frequently since opening. Pros: All in all, the sushi is the best I've had since moving here from Southern California. Cons: The 'booths' are not stable so if the person (or children) behind you is bouncing around..you will be too! Kinda annoying..wishing that could be fixed. When Hibachi is going it's VERY loud! My boyfriend and I decided to try this place out for our anniversary dinner. Keep in mind it is about 6PM on a Friday. When we entered, our server was sitting behind the desk and just looked at us when we stepped up to him. No greeting. We asked for a table for two and he told us to wait. The wait was 7 minutes. The ambiance is great if you like it dim with colorful lights. Everyone around was loud and you can hear the faint Chinese music in the background. Our drinks came out in about 5 minutes, and the sweet tea is delicious (keep in mind I'm not a fan of sweets). I ordered fried calamari first so that I can have some time to look over their menu. The appetizer took about 10 minutes to come out. They did not bring extra plates for us and they were very stingy on sauce. DO NOT GET FRIED CALAMARI. It's not your traditional Asian calamari. The sauce is not bad but I had to really scrape every bit of sauce I could because they had only given about two teaspoon of each sauce (2 options). The calamari breading just made the texture undesirable for an appetizer, the opening course. We then ordered a salmon skin hand roll and a dynamite roll. The server had a tough time understanding my request for a hand roll so I had to show him the menu and where it was. Within minutes, this couple was seated next to us and you can suddenly tell the server treated them differently. Is it because they're an older couple and we most definitely look like young college students? The couple just placed their order and within five minutes received plates and utensils, appetizer, salad, and drinks. Our sushi rolls took 25 minutes to come out! During our entire stay, no one came to check up on us or our food. Yet, within just ten minutes, the couple had been checked on twice. The salmon skin was not that great and the hand roll's sauce was overpowering everything else. My heart burned. The dynamite roll was not the dynamite that I know and I am a sushi fan. I'm used to eating sushi that is fresh by the pier or fish shipped overnight to El Paso (refer to Dragonfly Wine & Sushi Bistro). The dynamite roll was missing the common sauce; it was different but the quality of fish was not bad for Las Cruces. Definitely better than Okazuri and Aqua Reef. We were done with our food and had to wait another 20 minutes before the server decided to put our check on our table and take our empty dishes away. I regret straying away from my usual Dragonfly. Never will I return here. I have a lot of serving experience. I do not appreciate not being greeted at the door. I do not appreciate the server taking my glass and straw away along with other people's glasses and straws, and then returning with my refilled drink. That is extremely disturbing and unprofessional. How do I know he did not mix up my glass and straw? I would drink straight from the glass but I took a close look and the rims are not as clean as I would like it to be. So excited to try this place! The atmosphere is incredibly nice but there are some major kinks to work out. Upon walking in it is unclear if you seat yourself or not and we stood there for a few minutes looking for someone to attend to us. We ordered calamari and a small sushi roll for an appetizer. The sushi roll was well prepared, as was the calamari. We also received the onion soup and salad. Soup was great but I didn't care for the salad. Big chunks of iceberg and the dressing sunk to the bottom of the bowl. Usually the salad is my favorite part of hibachi. The main dish was very good, but the chicken was over cooked and the steak was missing from our plate. Once we received the filet it was very good - best part of the plate other than the scallops. No liquor license yet so don't expect to get a drink, service was okay but wait staff is still a little new and you will find yourself asking for things more than being given them automatically. The miso soup was luke warm temperature. The crab rangoon and vegetable gyoza were unrecognizable and inedible. The Samurai roll would have disarmed any warrior.
