I came here with my boyfriend. He frequented many times before we met. We shared a seaweed salad and monkey balls. I preferred the salad to the balls since the balls smelled too funky for me. Anyways, he ordered a variety of sushi and a Thai tea. I had the Yaki Soba with chicken and it was like a wok in heaven. The dish was hot and the veggies even hotter. There wasn't much sauce however. But it still tasted like the pan it was cooked in. Mild flavor and moderate charm. Next time I will save the Thai tea for dessert with the chocolate fortune cookie. I'm giving four out of five stars because (while our server was very cookie cutter) the inside lacked organization and cleanliness. There were dishes all around when we entered. Hubby and I visited for a lunch date recently. It's a small space, but cozy. We changed it up from our usual sushi spot since they were closed for renovations. The sushi was ok. Definitely passable and tasted fresh enough, but we weren't super impressed with it either. They didn't have many orinigal or creative rolls, just the basic, stock rolls you'd see at any sushi restaurant. It looks like they've got laotian and thai food as well. I was HIGHLY unsure of getting sushi in ABQ. A friend who used to live in Cali, who's now stationed here suggested this place. After 2 months of dragging my feet, we went and boy was I pleasantly surprised! We started with the monkey balls and ordered a few rolls. I thinks it's about time to write a review for this gem of a sushi spot. Reading through reviews I have yet to come across anybody talking about the PAUL'S ROLL. This roll is absolutely amazing. in fact... LEGENDARY. The roll is HUGE packed with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado, reg tuna. I honestly can't say enough good things about this roll it's THAT GOOD. I am the type of person who prefers raw sushi over tempura based sushi because the tempura can be over powering in my opinion but this is so big the ratio of fried : raw is so perfect. I'm going to give you some expert advice: Paul's roll is big enough to feed two people and still be full especially after soup and cucumber/seaweed salad. Not to mention the cucumber salad dressing is so amazing and this is coming from a woman who is very picky with her dressings. This place has literally changed my perspective on sushi, I can't enjoy mediocre sushi any longer after I've discovered Sakura. The fish is always extremely fresh. The service is always on point. This sushi was really not good. We tried several of the chef specialty rolls and they were all not good (and all $15!!). All of the rolls were way too big- pieces could not fit in your mouth. All rolls relied on copious amounts of sauce or mayonnaise. They were just gross. The service was fine and the tofu spring rolls weren't bad but we will never eat sushi there again. Yikes. read more

Wasn't sure what to think of a sushi restaurant in a strip mall. I am so glad I took the chance. The people are so friendly. It's a quiet comfortable atmosphere. The food is absolutely so delicious. The green Chile egg rolls were yummy and the special sushi rolls were phenomenal. The icing on the cake was the monkey balls appetizer. I could have that as an appetizer at all of my meals. My new favorite sushi place in ABQ!!! We've been looking for a place like this since we moved here three years ago. Wish we had found it sooner! Sakura is a comfy, small restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere and great service. We came on a Wednesday evening. When we got there it was quite empty, but before we left, a few other tables filled up. We ordered mainly sushi and appetizers. The chef sliced the sashimi thick and it was so fresh and yummy! Spicy sausage was my favorite (get a side dish of the extra hot sauce). Beef Laab and Beef Jerky are both excellent. Ceviche is outstanding with its ginger-laced sauce. Delicious Thai iced coffee. * Hidden gem in Albuquerque!* I'm disappointed in myself for not writing a sooner review! This has to be me and my husbands favorite place to have lunch and we've been coming here for about a year now. We try to come here at least twice a month and just relax and enjoy ourselves. Its always a must that we start off with their monkey balls for our appetizer (there so delicious) and I also get a nice, cold ,refreshing Thai tea. The staff here is always so gracious and welcoming and practically know our usual lol. Sakura Sushi hands down, is the best sushi in NM! You can taste the love they put into all there food. Its awesome cause they have so many different varieties of foods to choose from and whats even better is that there all equally delicious. Definitely try their Pad Thai and in house Laos Sausage. Hands down, currently my favorite sushi restaurant in Albuquerque. The service is excellent and the fish fresh and well prepared in all forms. My usual lunch for two consists of a spicy tuna hand roll, one large roll, one small roll (usually California) and two or three orders of nigiri. That, along with the excellent miso soup for starters, is a feast. So we decided to try another sushi place in NM. This supposed to be Japanese sushi restaurant, but it also serves Thai and Laotian dishes. Just doing one type of dish is hard enough, they are serving three ethnic dishes under one roof. The chef must be genius, I thought, and decided to try new adventure. Since had many bad experiences with Sushi shops in NM, we decided to play safe and ordered Japanese curry, teriyaki bento, and roll combos. What we got was something unexpected and never imagined. Japanese curry came that looked like steamed potato mixed with shredded carrots, top with little bit of curry sauce. Teriyaki bento came with salad and steamed chicken pieces topped with soy sauce. It was just salty, period. Sushi roll combos lost to sushi from Smith supermarket in taste testing. I thought it was impossible buy truly found worst sushi restaurant in Albuquerque. read more

This is where we go when we want sushi +. It's a small restaurant with usually only one server for the room, but it works. The sushi is sometimes messy, always delicious. You really can't go wrong with any of their rolls. Seriously. Get them all. Just be prepared to use your hands. Their Thai tea is pretty phenomenal. They serve it over ice and even sometimes in a big fancy wine glass. It's sweet, refreshing, and tastes a little chocolately. They have Thai, Laotian, and Japanese food. The yakisoba was good but not the best. Pad Thai is good, just understand that they go heavy on the spices unless you get mild (the guy across from us got medium and said he was tearing up--he also said he must just be delicate). The pho is also good, but different than the usual pho you'd get at a Vietnamese restaurant. It's darker and sweeter, and doesn't come with cilantro or lime. I don't recommend adding lime. Overall, this place is good and diverse. We have been many times and will go back again and again! read more

Two words. Laos menu. I've had the beef laab and the homemade Laotian sausage. Both are fantastic I see no need to order anything else. The Yelp description of this resaturant says "Asian Fusion" but that's not entirely correct. There's a sushi menu, Japanese menu, Thai menu and Korean (I think). Maybe even a couple of Chinese dishes. So, something for everybody. It's not one of those disastrous massive menus with 400 items, but just a few dishes from each cuisine. read more

This restaurant serves Laotian, Thai, and Japanese food. We were in the mood for Japanese, so for the two adults we ordered Monkey Balls (appetizer), Oysters Dynamite (daily special appetizer), and a chirashi (assorted sashimi on a bed of sushi rice) to share. For the kids we ordered 2 teriyaki bento boxes, one chicken and one salmon. Unfortunately both the appetizers have the problem that many Japanese restaurants do nowadays, that of overloading the dish with a mayonnaise/teriyaki/srirachi sauce. I would have enjoyed the Monkey Balls (chopped spicy tuna stuffed into mushrooms and tempura-fried) and the oysters a lot more if I could have tasted the primary ingredients instead of just the sauce. The chirashi bowl was decent but nothing spectacular. The fish was adequately fresh except for the white tuna which tasted just slightly off. However the underlying bed of shredded daikon and rice was again laced with the ubiquitous mayonnaise-based sauce; very annoying. The bento boxes came with the featured meat served on a bed of stir-fried bean sprouts and sliced onion, and sides of seaweed salad, mixed-greens salad, half an orange, 4 pieces of California roll, and steamed rice. The California rolls were nice and fresh, the mixed greens were a lovely change from the usual iceberg, and the seaweed salad yummy. The portion of chicken was huge but lacking the necessary browned/charred taste and appearance. It looked more like it was sauteed in a pan on medium heat instead of broiled or barbecued. The highlight of our meal was dessert. We ordered the sweet sticky coconut rice with mango. This dish is seasonal because they only use fresh mango (never bottled), and good fresh mango is only available during the warmer months of the year. Oh, man. This was gutteral-moaning-in-your-throat good. We were already pretty full, so the portion was large enough for the four of us to share. Service was efficient and friendly. The interior is clean and pleasant, and the bathrooms are clean. I did find it a bit odd that the women's room had what looked like 50 rolls of toilet paper piled up on the corner table, not in a box or anything, just out. But I suppose it beats running out. One serious gripe: turn off the television! When I'm out for a nice dinner, I do not want tacky Asian soap operas and episodes of Survivor to distract me (or more importantly, my kids; they couldn't tear their eyes off the screen and barely tasted their food). We didn't get a chance to try their Laotian or Thai food, but we wouldn't recommend their Japanese food. It's adequate, but at these prices I expect better. However, I'm betting that spouse and I will make special trips back just for their sticky rice with mango dessert. read more

I've gone here a couple times since my move to Albuquerque in the late spring of 2013. Every time I go, I'm greeted by fantastic service and the sushi is amazing! Their monkey balls are really good and have a nice kick to them. Their tuna rolls and salmon rolls are fresh & tasty. Our favorites chef specialty rolls are the "Rock n Roll," "Sakura Roll," and the "Rainbow Roll." But I highly recommend the Sakura Roll, its a personal favorite!! Brought one dish out, the others came later. Forgot to bring napkins.
