Stopped in for an early Sunday dinner (yay they are open on Sundays!). Ordered 4 different vegetarian rolls: the non-tempura veg roll, tempura green chile, tempura sweet potato, and avocado cream cheese. The tempura ones were the best. The vegetarian one was interesting - had spring mix in it! I had never had an avocado and cream cheese roll before. It was fine but it just felt like a lot of cream cheese. Four stars only because of the somewhat limited vegetarian sushi selection - I wish they'd add tofu, kampyo, or oshinko options. Another nice thing about it is that it's quite quiet - so nice for conversations, and there were other people there. It's nice when you don't feel like the only person not getting takeout! We'll definitely be back; it's probably our go-to now since the other place named Sushiya in the NE heights relocated to Bernalillo. read more

I grew up ocean adjacent and so I admittedly have a difficult time with rating sushi restaurants that are located absolutely no where near an ocean. That's my bias. Sushiya is my goto for sushi in Albuquerque. It is consistently good, or it has been for me over the past six years. The food has always tasted fresh and they make a nice variety of rolls. I also frequent this restaurant with people who are NOT seafood or sushi fans by any means. So they have a nice variety of foods that are not sushi. In terms of the food, I'd always recommend it to anyone looking for good sushi. As for the service, which in my opinion separates the good from bad, it has been consistently good for six years. The service is always friendly. They are attentive and they anticipate your needs. This is a mom and pop place. I remember spending my days at my dad's bakery and coffee shop when I was young. Interacting with the customers and watching the place operate. Well, Sushiya reminds me of those times because they have their boy there who gets to do the same thing. So it's a nostalgic family and personal experience for me. It sets the ambience of the restaurant. People are friendly and you feel comfortable there. Overall, Sushiya has good service, it's family owned and operated. You just can't beat that! It's people who are passionate about their business. You know they care because they have skin in the game. This all shows at Sushiya. So go, check it out! Are you going to be blown away like Marty McFly by the food? Maybe not. Really good hidden sushi spot! The restaurant is small but service was great. Really loved their Wok plates and bento box options as well. Highly recommend the dumplings and to try one of their sake's. This was the only place I have ever been to where they breakdown what sake is and which might be best for you. It had honestly been a minute since I had been to sushiya. The last time (several years ago) it seemed like everything was bland and flavorless... however my husband and I were in the area and we decided to give it another try. Boy am I glad we did! We ordered sushi to start. The sushi came out fairly quickly. We had 2 basic rolls, a tuna roll and a salmon roll... tho I will say there was no mention of avocado in the salmon roll, but when it was brought it had it... not a fan but both were good and fresh. We also ordered a Buddha Belly roll which was HUGE! It was also amazingly delicious! By far my new favorite roll! I would return for this roll alone! Highly recommend! We also ordered some crab Rangoon ... however I felt that these were not nearly filled enough for the size... they definitely could use some more filling. The egg drop soup we got was also STELLAR!! Best dam sushi I've ever had. I had the nob hills and green Chile tempura with a side of extra eel sauce so good.

I had heard this place was great. I was excited to try it. I tried some sushi, their wok fried Mongolian Beef, and the hot and sour soup. The soup was excellent, but the Mongolian Beef was awful. It did not have and sauce, just onions and beef, and a bit of leftover oil. The Spicy Tuna Roll was also awful. It was not spicy, and was the texture of baby food wrapped in white rice. The service was also dicey. I was the only customer when I arrived, but by the time my food arrived, the place was about half full. When they brought my food, it was served with a fork on the plate. I asked for chopsticks, and after watching the waitress take orders from several table after walking away, I gave up and went to the register and got my own chopsticks. Plenty of good Thai/Asian restaurants in town. So, from my perspective, they won't have to worry about me being one of those pesky return customers... read more

Food was also disappointing especially for the price one of the dishes that had beef wasn't fully cooked. Wont be going back and don't reccomend this place. read more

ValPak had a 15% off coupon so we tried this place. We will not be back. My daughter said her miso soup tasted like a mix and not fresh. The egg drop had corn in it and was just ok. The crab Rangoon and vegetable egg rolls were again, just ok. They came with teeny little cups with dipping sauce. Weird. We both got bento boxes and they were nothing special. The tempura vegetables were meh. The salad dressing was weird. Her BBQ and my shrimp were just ok. She likes more bland food and she said it was super bland. I ordered Sushiya for takeout last night and it was delicious. This was a Sunday night and they weren't busy from what I could tell. I was able to pick up the order rather quickly. I'm a huge fan of the Geisha roll which comes with rice paper and has a ton of flavor. I also added a California roll which was ok, a little lite on the rice side of things. I think the prices for their rolls are super reasonable and would much prefer this to grocery store sushi that is often just about the same price. In the past, I've come and sat down instead of getting takeout. When you eat in, they bring you miso soup which is always such a treat. read more

The servers just seemed young and wasn't sure was in the sushi rolls, so we gambled on the rolls and were happy with them. We were seated immediately and had our drink orders taken and delivered quickly. After they took our food order though they took a while to get our ticket and she gave me a very small box for our leftovers. We've been eating here for years. Very friendly service, and they have been willing to accommodate vegetarians and some special requests. I tend toward the almond chicken, and have gotten it with mixed veggies (instead of just plain steamed broccoli). I usually get the dinner portion and often have food to take home. I'm not much of a sushi freak but I have liked everything I have had there over many, many visits. Worth checking out. read more

Stopped by here for a bite of sushi and the sushi was good! One of the sushi dishes that I got took quite a while to come out, it basically came out by the time I was done with my other sushi order. For all the tempura we ordered we got 2 tiny mini cups (1tb) each of sauce . In the Cucumber roll the cucumber was soft. On all the rolls the rice was almost dry as was the side of rice. Good luck. I often avoid giving bad reviews, since I was always taught from an early age that if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all. However, I feel I owe it to my Yelp community to help them steer clear of any duds out there. Especially when the place already has overwhelmingly positive reviews. Maybe I came on a bad night, but this was one of those unpleasant experiences that I am obligated to tell you about. First of all, this place is hidden in the corner of a very dimly lit shopping strip. The parking lot was full, but as we later discovered, none of those other cars were for this place. We entered to be "greeted" by a very awkward young man, dressed in street clothes, who looked like he was extremely pale, beads of sweat on his forehead, slurred speech, etc. He acted surprised to see us and told us to sit wherever. This same young man was also our waiter. There was only one other couple in the whole restaurant. And it was eerily quiet. We were so close to walking out, but decided to stick around. Our waiter struggled through taking our order, but eventually he got it, and we waited a reasonable amount of time for our food. The food was nothing memorable. But I honestly think our waiter was not well and probably should not have come into work that day. Either that or someone had his family hostage in the back and he had been forced to wait tables for 48 hours straight with no rest. Nah, it was probably the former. To date I've only ordered one time. I got two sushi rolls. The order was ready within the time frame estimated. The sushi was very good and very fresh. I tried them because I found a coupon in my coupon pack in the mail even though I did not use the coupon. What I really loved is that I was offered a free soup with my order so I got a miso which was very good. Also they are not at all stingy with providing enough soy, wasabi, and Ginger. When my friend wanted to take me here, I was hesitant because it was in a tucked away corner, I had never heard of it, and I hadn't had a chance to check out their menu yet. The Tempura Veggies and Shrimp are just right as well. My Szechwan Shrimp with plenty of crispy veggies swam in a lovely spicy sauce. And I'm glad I requested brown rice (a .50 up charge) instead of the steamed and fried options - it was nutty and well prepared. I shop at Albertson's regularly and have noticed this neighborhood eatery out of the corner of my eye but the lack of curb appeal never quite drew me in. I (of course) relied on Yelp to guide me and the proximity along with the fact that it was opened and serving at the odd hour of 3:30 iced it for me. I had a $70 gift card so I invited my son and we were off to Sushiya! Only a couple of customers there at that hour of the afternoon. I noticed, thanks to reviews on Yelp, that what you see on the outside doesn't reflect the very pleasant, neat and clean interior. Booth seats were a little worn (which speaks well of their usage) but otherwise the table was clean and we were greeted by our server with a smile. We ordered three rolls and an assortment of nigiri sushi and it was all very nice quality as well as generously proportioned. Pricing was reasonable and the sake was fairly priced. I noticed the beer prices were much less than I have seen in other sushi establishments. $3.50 for a 12 oz. Saporo. Tab came to around $63 so my gift card with an additional $6 brought the total to around $76. They had an extensive menu and I will be there again to try some of the rest of their 魅力的な食べ物 Miryoku-tekina tabemono (tempting food offerings). One of the benefits of being a Marine for 20 years is the travel around the world. During my time in the Corps, I spent a few fair months in Japan, well Okinawa to be precise, and there I should note a few differences. First off, sushi in Japan is VERY different from Sushi in America, you won't find cream cheese, or avocado in Sushi rolls in Japan, actually most of it is Nigiri, or just rice and fish. I also had the pleasure of growing up 45 minutes away from the best sushi in America, in San Francisco, CA, so I am a bit of a snob when it comes to sushi. Let me start by saying that the service at this place was absolutely atrocious. We came in on a Friday evening and the restaurant was half full, all we ordered was soup, sushi and water. We sat there for at least 15 minutes before our "server" and I say that because we literally had three of them, came over to ask us what we wanted to drink. then a different person, who also identified herself as our server, came over 15 minutes later to take our order, 20 minutes later, our food finally arrived. In that time period, I watched 4 other people come in, be seated, order, and get served their food before us. All we ordered was 2 bowls of soup, and 2 rolls. The egg drop soup had corn in it, so that was an automatic red flag for me, but then again, I think this place is a hybrid Japanese, Chinese, New Mexico amalgamation, which just didn't work. The miso soup was OK. The sushi was just OK, nothing super special about any of our rolls. What did stand out in my mind, was the large pieces of something rather crunchy and inedible in both of our rolls. This place was a disappointment from beginning to end, and we won't return. read more
