Haven't been back in years until recently when we were in the area at lunch time and decided to stop in. We ate outside under an umbrella which was pleasant. There were two servers for the patio while we were there, they were busy and did their best although I think they needed more help. The food was a bit disappointing. I was hoping for a great lunch and I got an average lunch. Ordered the yellow curry with tofu. Came with literally two hunks of carrot and about 4 pieces of potato. Curry was alright, I've had better, much better. The eggplant stir fry was a tad greasy for my liking. My hubby ordered the ground chicken porridge which was not porridge. It was a bowl chicken soup with lotsa rice and ground chicken. The Thai iced tea was pre-made so couldn't get it without the cream or without a cows milk alternative. There are so many wonderful Thai restaurants in this city, don't think I'll be in a rush to come back here. read more

I love sitting here within the restaurant's outdoor area. It kind of feels like a nice resort in Thailand. They have lots of parking spaces in the back as well. Service can be better, I think they're a bit short staffed. We ordered: - Thai corn fritter -- It was ok. thought it was a bit too fried, too greasy and too crunchy for me - Yum Eggplant -- eggplant was flavorful and had some shrimp on top - Vegetable Pad See Ew -- I'm a bit of a connoisseur of this dish and it was quite good - Tom Yum Talay (Seafood Lemongrass Soup) -- excellent and authentic flavors. It had big chunks of scallop, mussels, shrimp, squid, fish and crab. It was a bit too spicy for me though. Will ask for less spice next time. - Thai omelette rice bowl -- such a simple yet delicious dish. I could eat this with a bowl of soup and be very satisfied. Egg was cooked perfectly, a bit fried on the outside and soft inside. The hot sauce in the side was very spicy though, at least for me! - Banana samosas with coconut ice cream -- devoured this! They close quite early at 8pm, so don't expect to take your time after your meal to sit around and chat over drinks and dessert if you are eating around 7pm. Came here for a quick lunch on a very slow weekday. The restaurant was pretty empty but service was quite slow. I ordered a lunch special and it was tasty and came out pretty fast, but again service was non existent. The server never came to ask if I needed anything else or how my food was. I had to go find someone to ring me up. I like the food and that they have ample outdoor seating, but come on you gotta provide service. read more

First time we ate here. The decor is more like industrial modern minimalist. Cement floor with HVAC exposed above. Clean, friendly hosts and helpful. The food are great portions wise. Flavorful! Suggestion: - Please use Chinese broccoli instead of the other broccoli. Someone said the lunch special weren't as good as ala carte. I haven't tried the lunch special. How sad. What once was beautiful is now a dismal and tragic affair. It is been a few years since I've come to Saladang. The sister restaurant used to be known as Saladang Song. Now known as Saladang Garden, it was more a garden of weeds than roses this evening. It hurts my heart to write this, since I used to love this restaurant, but the truth is the truth. I must give two stars for the beautiful patio and very friendly server. However, the food was mediocre at best and gross at worst. The soup was not great, but it was good. You know great Tom Kha when you taste it, and you also know merely good Tom Kha when you taste it. This Tom Kha good, and I'm grateful for it because it was the best part of the meal. Our appetizer was the boneless stuffed chicken wings, and they were a lie. Everything inside the stuffed wings was a homogenous ground paste. It was supposed to be shrimp, glass noodle, chicken breast, peas, and carrots. But I could sense none of that except the ground chicken and peas. There was absolutely no shrimp or glass noodle, at least not that I could discern. The appetizer was tasteless, and we ate it, but without any gusto. The final blow was the main course: crispy pork belly with Chinese broccoli. If my husband were the type who complained in restaurants, I'm sure he would have at this. The squares of pork belly were rock hard, dry, and nearly impossible to chew. Crispy does not mean tough! Even as I write this Yelp, I cannot wait to get home to floss. We left the meat rather than take it to go, which says a lot since I am a tremendously enthusiastic carnivore. But it simply was not chewable. It makes me very sad to write this because I was so looking forward to revisiting Saladang. The song used to be something beautiful to sing, but the Garden is nowhere you'd want to plant. It pains me to write a negative Yelp. Very rarely do. But this meal was a scandal, and really, I should have sent that pork belly back. Alas, sometimes quality declines. Ordered from grub hub so unfortunately my first experience with this place was more expensive than it needed to be. Ordered the green curry with chicken. Veggies were sparse. A few canned bamboo shoots and a couple pieces of eggplant with one small piece of barely cooked pepper. This is more savory than sweet but the savory flavor seems to be coming from the oil they use to cook the food which is overpowering - not unlike at a Chinese food place- the chicken was definitely dark meat and had lots of grizzle and fat attached to it. This dish was kind of gross. Nothing like the green curries I have had all over LA, and SD. read more

The bamboo shoot they used had funky taste which made the dish unpleasant to eat. The bamboo shoot tasted like preserved kind. Papaya salad - tasty, but too much peanuts and the green bean tasted too earthy.. they didn't smash green bean. So next time prob ask for no peanuts and no green bean. I've never been a fan of any of the Saladang's. My husband grew up with the propaganda that it was the best in the area. It's so mediocre. Saladang Garden today, for the first time, was pretty awful. They describe themselves as "Thai Cuisine". LOL it's food, not cuisine. I was disgusted by this curry chicken thing with noodles. All dark thigh meat. Yucky noodles. Chicken satay was edible, Penang Chicken was fine (white meat but tough). I ordered chicken with lettuce leaf. The chicken was weird, not the light meal I was hoping for. Very rich. I love Saladang Garden! I love the "garden walls" tall metal cut out walls surrounding the restaurant. We chose to sit inside because it was a bit chilly. TIP for LUNCH: Arrive early because the place fills up. We were seated immediately. The options on the menu were a lot, breakfast, lunch or regular menus. I chose the Pad Thai from the lunch menu, but it was a bit too sweet, yet I enjoyed it. My husband ordered from the regular menu, pineapple fried rice which comes with shrimp and chicken. It's a huge mountain portion! He took half of it home for later. Service was excellent! When I needed a refill on my Jasmine Ice Tea it was filled immediately. When my husband's beer was finished he was asked if he wanted another! Parking is free on the lot between Saladang Garden and Saladang. Entrance is from Arroyo Parkway. You can easily confuse this with the neighboring Saladang next door, but the atmosphere here is nice and open, with a high ceiling and nice views from outside. The food is a tad on the spicy side, so it was especially tasty, as I enjoy the spicy food. Selection is more traditional Thai food, and large family style servings fed the four of us easily. The one thing I went for was the mango sticky rice dessert, which is sweet and delicious. Pad Thai is a deluxe version with all sorts of meats, and a hue amount of rice, with rice noodles. It's definitely not as good as it use to be. The food has gone way downhill. The heyday of Saladang was well over 10 years ago. More like 20 years ago. The original Saladangs was under a totally different ownership in its early days, providing fresh, flavorful and more "authentic" tasting Thai cuisine. But they gave up the restaurant business and sold it to new owners. After that the menu totally changed. They removed many of our favorite dishes from the menu, and we could tell the food was not as interesting, but still well prepared. I know that Thai food can be regional, so perhaps the region changed. But fast forward to the present day, since the Pandemic, it seems to have really gone down hill. I don't go there very often due to not living in the area anymore. But something seems really different again. Did it get a third new owner? Because the menu has more Chinese food on it. I don't ever remember Chinese food items being on the menu before. Don't get me wrong, I love Chinese food, but their version is not very interesting. I do know that Thai cuisine has influences from other neighboring countries like Indonesia, Burma, India, China, and Laos. However the current menu at Saladang seems rather one note, and not unique or special. They have the common popular Thai dishes and then threw in some common Chinese dishes, like Gyoza, Wontons, Chow Mein, and Orange Chicken (the last two were invented in the United States). There's nothing wrong with including some of the Chinese influences in Thai Cuisine, but at least make it more interesting and well prepared! The food has become rather mediocre, overly heavy and oily, and not very fresh. They use mediocre to poor ingredients in many of their dishes. And stuff is overcooked, or overly sweet, or overly salty. It's just not balanced right for what I expect in really good Thai food. My other pet peeve is that 75-95% of their menu is NOT gluten-free! My mom, who is gluten free, has always been able to eat Thai food because so many of the classic dishes are naturally gluten-free. But this is not the case at Saladang Garden. Just about every classic Thai dish on their menu is NOT gluten-free, which is definitely not right. It tells me that they use way too much soy sauce in their cooking, instead of just fish sauce like other Thai restaurants do. No wonder some people have complained that the food doesn't taste very "Thai." I'm disappointed, and we won't be coming back there ever again. read more

I have been to Saladang restaurant for so many years but I have never stopped by Saladang Gardens until recently. I was missing out! We had corn fritters (so light and yummy), Tom Yum soup (it was ok), Saladang Fried Rice (excellent! Loved the garlic pork on top), basil and chili with chicken ( good), Chicken green curry (it was ok), and banana samosas with coconut ice cream (excellent!). Another place that allowed my dog, always a plus. Crab cheese wontons were on the sweet side but crunchy and good. The pad Thai was very very sweet and I had to drench it with the spicy fish sauce. The catfish was deep fried but not seasoned and sauce was on the side. Wasn't a fan of this and this is the first place that serves it like this, I'm just used to it being cooked in the spicy sauce. Disappointed that I asked for medium spice and it was still sweet. Basil and chili stir fry with pork belly was also very sweet. The food was ok but the hostess had poor customer service skills. I politely asked her to ask the cook to split my plate and serve my meal in two plates and she refused to do it. She said they don't provide that service here and I have to do it myself. I explained to her that other restaurants provide this service and if she could ask her cook to do that for me and she went to back of the restaurant didn't ask the cook and said no we will not do that for you. This place usually gets extremely busy pre-pandemic but I hear post pandemic it still gets its share of patrons during the weekend nights. The original restaurant is just next-door and after It did so well this garden area opened as overflow to those who want to experience an outdoor California-esh vibe. Imagine on a lovely spring or summer day sitting outside with the umbrellas in the garden area.. is so beautiful. Even at night with string lights and fire lamps next to you. It is huge inside as well as on the patio area however post pandemic it is extremely quiet. During the daytime you can find many sitting areas and be very far apart from others. I do notice that they don't necessarily keep to the 8 feet distance between tables, nor do they have scanning code for the menu items. They actually give you full on plastic menus that some may be averse to touching. You will also get silverware unless you ask for plastic and cloth napkin. Everything is served exactly as though Covid never happened. The only thing you'll notice that will make you know pandemic happened is staff are all wearing face shields and masks. I'm not sure if the stars should be deducted for this type of observation. One star was taken off because given the emptiness of space as well as lack of staff and not a lot of patrons in the day time, it is still amazing to me how slow service is once you get your food. That has always been my gripe even when the original Saladang and opened. If you don't have a good conversationalist in front of you while you're eating you may have to just sit there for a while. They hardly come back to check on your refills or ask if you need anything. It is a very typical Asian type of service where again I'm not sure if a star should be taken off for it but being many restaurants are more patron sensitive, I am really surprised they haven't kept up. The fact that this place have more of the American-Thai vibe, I do believe the staff needs to be more on point in coming back to check on any further needs, Covid or not. That Or do like the Korean bbq restaurants... have a button bell. I ordered the pad see ew you as well as the curry noodles.. they were all amazingly huge portions that most will end up taking home. Of course you will have to box everything yourself. The taste is impeccable. I never have issues with any other food here as it is pretty authentic. Saladang Song specializes in Thai cuisine. The younger sister to the popular (and similarly-named) Saladang restaurant, Song's more elegant atmosphere aims to please an upscale audience. From the industrial styling of the restaurant to the playful, flowing lines in their menu, Song represents an artist's flight of fancy. Before walking inside, one crosses a stately courtyard patio. The stone facade lends an airy, exotic feel to Song. Orchids are placed strategically throughout the interior dining hall. Concrete walls featuring latticework mask the parking lot from the diners' view. They offer a wine list and mixed drinks. For starters, we had a pork satay (around $9). Song's rendition of satay was fresh: the peanut sauce was replaced with a sweet sauce. The pork was a chewy jerky, not too tough to rend off the stick. I succumbed to our server's recommendation for the seafood combination special (around $20?). A confetti of vibrant contrasting colors and strong aromas it was not as spicy as advertised. The fish was mellow and listless but the mussels and crab were delicious. Sumptuous delights aside, no place is without its faults. Pundits state Song's cooking is not terribly authentic. Coupled with the lounge music in the background, I could argue that Song is not trying to be authentic. Our entree was brought out moments after the appetizer. While we were working on the appetizer, the main dish was getting cold. Service was impersonal but efficient - our waters were refilled and the check was brought out when needed. Frequent patrons of Thai cuisine learn to pay a high premium for their food; Song is no exception. Saladang Song is certainly one of the most breathtaking Thai restaurants ever. The combination of soaring concrete walls and the courtyard for al fresco dining is just so perfect for a summer's meal. I had been irregularly before for dinners and remembered a coconut sauce over rice noodle dish I didn't enjoy and solid versions of staples like pad Thai. We started coming here for work lunches and their lunch specials. Their specials are a great value because they come with the chosen entree, rice, salad, sometimes fried calamari, and ....the clincher, a scoop of chocolate chip ice cream for dessert.
