Oh Salam, how I miss you! Before moving out of the area, I lived in delivery distance of Salam and probably ate from there once, maybe (don't judge!) twice a week. The portions were so huge I would have enough for lunch or dinner the next day. I LOVE the shawarma. Whenever I come up to Chicago I always try to get to Salam. I live in Southern Illinois now in a town with one "Middle Eastern" restaurant. I can't even eat at it because what they call shawarma is like a cruel joke, especially compared to Salam. This place is AMAZING!! My favorite place in the neighborhood for Middle Eastern food and there is a ton around here. They have the best Falafel sandwich I've ever had and their fattoush salad is out of this world. My other two favorites for appetizers are the hummus and Labneh, yummy! You can go here and have a great dinner and not leave feeling like you broke the bank. Its so affordable and also is BYOB. Yay! Another way to keep the bill down! I love this place!! They have expanded. Just a year or two ago, it was small. Best place to get the real fresh taste of Mediterranean food and the best price! This place has great food at a great price. It's just a shame that the service is terrible. Every time my husband and I eat in here, we get ignored - I wait tables too, and I'm not talking about the "I'm very busy, be right with you" kind of ignoring, this is blatant avoidance when there are two other tables in the place. We have walked out twice after waiting at least 15 minutes at our table for someone to acknowledge, watching everyone else get friendly service. I really liked this place before the bad experiences but now would rather go to Dawali or Noon-O because even with spotty service at the former, at least someone pays attention to us! read more

We love Salam. Their food is superb! The hummus is second to none...seriously. That is the best hummus we have ever eaten! It's like mousse practically! Here's the reason why they get 3 stars and not 5. We have ordered from them 5 times. 4 out of 5 times the food we ordered either wasn't included in the order (though we paid for it) or the order was incorrect (we received the incorrect type of food). They need to work on getting their delivery system working correctly. Right now, they aren't doing such a great job. BUT, that being said, we will still order from them. Went here for the third time and decided to finally write a review. All right, every single time I go I order some sort of entree with rice and every time I leave satisfied. Why? It is because they give you your money's worth. I eat at a lot of different Mediterranean restaurants so when comparing the food to those places I would say these guys are pretty good. It's not the best, however, the amount that they give you makes up for it. Staff is really nice here also. We had this really cool punk rocker type looking waitress who was super chill with our group of six. When the bill came we handed her 4 cards and cash and she told us that she wasn't allowed to do that but she did it anyway because she's dope. Anyway to sum it up Food - It's pretty good and most expensive thing on the menu is like $14. They also give you a lot of food especially if you order with rice. Service - Dope, they were a little busy that day so they were a bit slow but noting too crazy that would not make you want to tip well. Place itself - It's clean but since they have a open grill it can get a little hot if you're not sitting in the right place. Additional perks - If you are like me and love Arab sweets there is an awesome sweet shop next door called Nazareth Sweets that sells good stuff. Try their knafah (pronounced kah-na-fah) that's my favorite desert. read more

Best and most authentic Palestinian style Hummus in the entire City of Chicago! I have been going here for nearly fifteen years and the food quality and consistency has never let me down... Incredibly affordable and delicious. Fresh and spicy! It wasn't busy the evening I went with friends and the server was always nearby, but not always checking in, which is fine because he was never bothered when I asked him to come over. We stumbled upon Salam a few months ago and were shocked at how uniquely delicious the food was. One bite and I looked at my husband as if to say, "Can you believe this? Awesome, right!?" But I couldn't speak because, y'know, mouth was full. He loves middle eastern food...but he's picky about it and usually unimpressed with our Midwestern options. Salam passed his test. Great service, prices, and mmmm...everything we've tried is so tasty. It's a two hour drive from our town, so whenever we're in Chicago we stop in, eat and load the trunk with tubs of baba ghanouj (how do they make it taste like this?), spinach pies, a couple combo dinners. I want to try everything. Then over to the bakery for a box of baklawa. Lasts us for days back home. Yes, we are a little bit obssessed. So although I recommend Salam...I warn you, it's addictive. I used to pick up food to go with Salam restaurant. It used to be good food. Yesterday I went to eat in the restaurant. It was horrible experience. The server seemed to be tired or careless. He barely talked to us. He got the food with saying a single word. He didn't follow up with us. He didn't refill our water. We ordered wrapped shawarma. The bread was very old. This review is for a carry out experience. Which was awful. I arrived a few minutes early, so I checked in with the hostess and sat down. Lots of carry out was hitting the counter, and I saw a bag with three entrees put on the counter at one point that I thought was mine. It was, but the guy didn't finish the order for another 20 minutes. Funny, because the rest of the order was cold sides and hummus. So I told him the food had sat there for 20 minutes, which he clearly knew, and he argued with me. I should have left right then. I feel stupid paying for the stuff. When I got home, of course it was not even warm, it was cold and nasty. Just for the guy's attitude, I'll never go back. There are too many decent middle eastern places in albany park for me to go back to Salam. read more

Think this is my second review of Salam. I went here with friends. I ordered falafel lunch plate. Falafel was crispy and tasty. Generous portion. I do wish they would put olive oil on top of humus instead of green chile, but it was still very tasty. I do like spicy. Kabsa was the special of the day. Gentleman at near table was having it and kabsa looked so yummy. Arabic coffee very tasty and wanted to order the kunafeh but I was quite full. Next time. Nice staff and quite handsome. Gave it 3 tries and never again. Salam is walking distance from my home, so I was hoping the renovated place would be a good neighborhood restaurant to go to. Forget about it. The night we went, they were out of both soups (and I was in the mood for soup) and the service was absolutely horrible. I get mad just thinking about it. Sure the food is decent and cheap, but I shouldn't have to chase the server down with questions or for our bill when we were ready to pay and leave. And don't even get me started on the condition of the uni-sex bathroon. Yuck!! read more

Man, what has happened to this place? I used to bring people here all the time and the food would never fail to impress. Recently I've noticed a change in both the food quality and service. Bread has been forgotten on two take-out occasions, and once while we were sitting in. Another time, I was told I can only have tahini or garlic sauce with my order. And once my Kefta Kebab was undercooked inside. Previously the Salam staff were always very friendly and generous and made us feel welcome. There's definitely a different vibe in there now. I'm not sure what caused it and I don't really care to find out. I'm really sad to write this because Salam has been my favorite place to get middle eastern food, but after so many problems I can't return without feeling bad. read more

Ordered through delivery.com. Everything was packaged carefully (and I ordered 2 juices -- fresh carrot and fresh carrot/orange. and a smoothie!). Hot food was hot, cold items were cold. The white bean & tomato soup is spectacular, unique spices. Tabouleh tasted fresh as though it was made same day. Baklava and warbat are a perfect ending! The food here is solid Arab food, but things are mixed in quality across the menu. Some of the appetizers, namely hummus and babba ganoush, are among the best I've had, and the pita is soft and delicious. The tahini salad was underwhelming, though---a fairly bland salad with tahini applied as primary flavor rather than as seasoning; likewise, the pomegranate juice was disappointing and out of a can. But it'd still be worth it for some of the appetizers. read more
