I have had nothing but bad experiences with Salem Boys. I brought in my truck and told them the *CLUTCH* master cylinder was failing and could they please replace it. After half a day, they called back and said, "We can't find anything wrong with your brakes." I brought in the truck again because the seat belt warning light would not go off. They replaced the entire seat belt assembly which was not even remotely the problem. The problem was simply a broken wire, which I had to replace myself. I wouldn't recommend a shop that mucks up such simple repairs. Do not and I repeat, DO NOT let them replace your catalytic converter. read more

I've had a few repairs done here over the years. I mainly use them to look over and inspect my cars for what needs to be repaired. It costs more than other places but they are overly thorough and honest. They charge more because they have quality mechanics and facilities. I often have my mobile guy use all there recommendations to fix my vehicle. If you pay 60k for a vehicle wouldn't you want the work done right. Saving a couple hundred isn't worth it IMO unless you have an alternative you can trust. I will continue to bring my vehicles here for diagnoses and the occasional repair. In fact I just recommended my daughter go over there and get her alignment. Hope she uses my suggestion. read more

It's rare to find honest, competent, and friendly staff and they embodied all three! They were honest with their prices, didn't over inflate, and were consistently communicating with me. They found that they were able to get a part cheaper than anticipated and called to tell me the good news! They could have very easily taken more profit but they sounded just as excited as I was that they were able to do my job for cheaper. Great place and will definitely be returning if I need to. They have done repairs and enhancements for me on my 2002 truck that I use to haul my LQ horse trailer. Fantastic shop. Every man of a certain age has a long life-list of mechanics shops he's visited; for me, most were remarkably 1) disgusting and 2) unhelpful. Hard to say why this is, but it may be that auto repair selects for rather rough-hewn guys. Anyway, this place is not only immaculate, but beautifully decorated with lots of interesting car-culture stuff. More to the point, in my experience they can fix things no one else can, such as a vacuum leak in my wife's Celica that had thwarted two other garages. Not cheap, but the price is fair. I took my truck to Mark Salem just for a balance, rotation and oil change. After I got my truck back, there was greasy on my floormats, steering wheel and gear shift. I couldn't believe it! Now I'm not usually one to complain, but my truck is only 4 months old and the WORST PART is that when I went back in to tell them about it, the owner Mark Salem handed me a little moist towelette so that I could go clean up the mess myself! I had an issue with my car not starting and a major brand auto place said that it is not your battery and likely is your alternator. They said they could install a new one for $487 but they couldn't be sure that was the issue. Instead of having them install the alternator I sent Mark Salem and email. Amazingly, he called me about an hour later. After a few questions he taught me how to self diagnose this issue and of course it was not the alternator. BOTTOM LINE: Mark took time out of his weekend to save me a ton of headaches and almost $500. I wish I lived near one of their stores so that I could use them for everything. If you live near their stores I strongly suggest you give them a shot. I have to believe that same generous honest approach is the touchstone of their well run business. Here is my input regarding whether or not Salem Boys is pricey or not. Not long ago I took a job in customer service for a large Dodge dealership near the border of Chandler and Tempe. Their outbound telephone solicitors make commission for every customer they call who agrees to bring in their car for routine maintenance such as oil changes. The repair shop supervisor and mechanics make commissions based on how much higher the ticket is above the reason you brought your car in. The more repairs they tell you need to be done the more commission they make. If you only have your oil changed and nothing else it hurts their pay check and puts their jobs in jeopardy. They have quotas that must be met. Their salaries are very low. To put food on their tables they rely on these commissions. Also you must get a certain percent of customers agree to a test drive of a new vehicle with a sales person when they bring their car in for repair. I know Salem Boys does not do this because when I first brought my car in I spoke to Andy or some other nice lady and advised them I would not do business with any mechanics who do this. read more

I love to give thanks and praise to businesses that truly are about the customers (not the almighty dollar), so I wasn't too surprised when I noticed that I reviewed them a few months ago, but I had forgotten. My ex has been dealing with another auto repair shop, and what started out as an oil change- has morphed into needing a new car because of their shoddy workmanship. I took it to SB for a second opinion (after noticing puddles of oil), and instead of taking my money for the repairs- they suggested the car go back for warranty repairs. We did, and it came back leaking even more and this time they tried blaming me by saying I obviously his the oil pan by the BIG dent that wasn't there the first time. I knew I hadn't hit anything and expressed my anger to Andy about that accusation. They lifted the car up, and took me back to show me that I in NO way hit anything because there wasn't a single scrape/scratch ANY WHERE on the oil pan ... just a HUGE dent. Although I knew it was the other establishment who had done this... Andi and her mechanics kept it professional by not bad mouthing the other business. So in addition to being extremely professional undeniably honest, and having the highest quality mechanics around... they are very humble and classy. I was willing to put a couple of thousand dollars into it (just to keep it a couple of more years), but again their integrity stood above the money I was willing to give then, and they (Andi and mechanic) didn't think it was a good idea given the mileage already on it. Once again I can't sing their praises enough, but if you are looking for high quality mechanics, owners who accept responsibility when something breaks while under their roof (see previous review), and just the kindest, most honest people ever... go to Salem Boys. This was the first time I visited Salem Boys Auto, and unfortunately the last. I listen to Mark S radio show all the time. I'm continuously impressed with level of knowledge to diagnose problems on the radio. I drive old truck with high mileage (215k miles). I took to SBA based on recommendation of coworker for oil change and transfer fluids service. After diagnosis, it was recommended to do front & rear differential service which I did. The check engine light was on (and noted in SBA paperwork prior to dropping truck at SBA). The next morning, I noticed leak under front of vehicle. I called my service advisor that helped me before, Daniel and he was helpful to get me in quickly to take another look at it. Truck dropped off after a day as was getting the check engine light fixed at other repair shop. That is the good part, Daniel being responsive. The bad part was told the leak was different from the service that was previously performed, it was pinon seal. The fill plug sits above the pinon seal. When the fluids were added, no leak was detected. I told Daniel that this is disappointing as I would have expected it to be noticed at the time the service was performed. Daniel said he would talk with his manager and see what he could do. Daniel called back at 5pm saying didn't get chance to talk with managers but will talk with them tomorrow and get back to me. Basically Daniel had 1.5 hours to talk with managers but it didn't work out that afternoon. Daniel called me back next morning to tell me SBA could repair the seal and in return would credit the front differential service I paid for the other day. As a consumer that sounds like a good deal and would make it right. What bothered me with this situation is SBA blamed it on low fluids, old truck and no way they would have ever noticed leak. So in the end, yes, SBA did offer to make it right, what bothered me was the way they went about it. Daniel wasn't authorized to make any decisions. I was referred to manager and we disagreed on process. Alan continued to lay blame on truck and low fluids. I was talked down to and interrupted many times. In the end, Alan cut check to refund me for differential service and I picked up my vehicle. Likely both SBA and I happier. So I can't really talk about SBA providing good mechanical services. They do seem knowledgeable about vehicles. Their prices are higher then other shops. So if stop there, you can say SBA made it right. I'm disappointed in the process how this was handled. I think could have gone something like "this is older truck, could have been low on fluids AND our tech should have / could have checked for leaks afterward so we will credit the differential service toward the repair". Again, SBA got there, just in a different way. I would have felt better if SBA took on some accountability. To me, that was important to hear them say they could have done a better job, would have made me feel better about the repair. I didn't get feeling Daniel or Alan put themselves in position of consumer, rather what protected SBA (cya approach). I don't doubt owning a car repair shop it hard work and tough customer service. I chalk this up to poor customer service. The oil change and fluid service were fine. No other repairs performed. I understand it's a balancing act of repair shop, technician and consumer. Maybe this will help SBA with technicians to double check for leaks not only after filling fluids but a small test drive as well. Car repairs aren't fun and very frustrating & expensive. SBA was immediately responsive once called them with leak to get vehicle in and take another look at it, that indicates to me a willingness to get it right. read more

I've been taking my Ford Escape here for years after getting poor service from the local dealer. Salem boys has always recommended service when necessary, and more importantly, declined the opportunity to perform service that they didn't feel was necessary. They keep good records of the maintenance that they do on your car, so they can tell what's needed and what isn't. During the Christmas break, our alternator failed and they took the car. Unfortunately, they couldn't complete the repair because parts didn't arrive in time (from our local Ford dealer, I suppose) so we used their rental car for a reasonable free. We had a problem with that too, which no one could have foreseen. Within 20 minutes after we called them, Mark and Andi showed up at our house with a spare rental car, fixed the original rental car on the spot and drove it home. If you have a problem they'll make it right. I especially like the fact that when they make a service recommendation they just lay it on the table as a choice -- I'll sometimes defer a maintenance operation to a later date and they always accept my decisions without argument. read more

Had been a customer of Salem Boys Auto for many years and experienced a few "errors" with their work. I had dealt with the "Big Name attitude" until I left my 2005 Suburban for Transmission service, less than 1 month later the Transmission completely failed leaving me DOA on road. Had the vehicle trailer-ed to their shop for repair and was informed not only was I SOL, but their shop manager (a real piece of arrogant work) offered a low end re-manufactured transmission at a premium price. I walked out of Salem boys Auto, transferred the vehicle to Tri-City Transmission. Since that time, I have chosen not to set foot in their facility or darken the door way.. Until this time I had never written about my experience except to Mr Salem himself. SBA never answered my complaint or a my email. read more

This a copy of my complaint to the Better Business Bureau. I think it speaks volumes. I will add that I had gone to Salem Boys since 2004 with two previous vehicles, without incident. However, I was charged on two occasions for repairs over $1000, whether those repairs were fully legit or not I cannot say. BBB COMPLAINT I went to Salem Boys Auto on 7/5/2011 for an A/C problem; the car was not blowing cold air consistently. They told me there would be a diagnostic fee of $45 to $100. Now, they came back with the following finding: "W[e] recommend replacing the radiator, flushing the cooling system, replacing the thermostat.." This is taken directly from my receipt. I must add that on the first phone call, they recommended the new radiator and cooling system flush. It was only on a subsequent phone call that I was suggested to also replace the thermostat (as in, they didn't recommend it initially, nor did they suggest that this be done first). Replacing the thermostat was an afterthought. I took delivery of the car without repair, and was charged a $100 diagnostic fee. I got a friend to help me, and it took him 5 minutes of driving around to determine that it's most likely the thermostat which is the problem. My friend and I replaced the thermostat ourselves, a $40 part, and the A/C has been fine ever since, proving that there is no such problem with the radiator. My issues are the following: 1) a $100 charge for a 5 min diagnosis 2) a "by the way" recommendation to replace the thermostat, the real problem (When I spoke with a representative, she claimed that this is what they would have done first, but that is NOT what I was told at the time) 3) Incorrect diagnosis 4) Inflated charges without basis 5) Poor professional conduct of Ms. Salem, who said "I'm offended" in my phone call to her. I used no vocabulary or words that were inappropriate or obscene. I merely said that if we cannot get this resolved, I will be forced to complain to the BBB. 6) Misrepresentation of the integrity of their business. Therefore, I am requesting the full $100 be returned to me due to the inflated charges, inappropriate conduct of Ms Salem, and the incorrect diagnosis. read more

They took care of our many cars for 16 years and always stood by their work. When the repair had an issue they made it good. Took my car in once when the speedometer stopped working. They said they could get a rebuilt one for $250. When they got into it they found that the "quality sticker" inside my mechanical speedometer had fallen into the works. They took out the slip of paper to "fix" it and saved me $250. I would never have known. I trust them. They charge standard rates, do quality work and keep my cars safe and operational. A customer's worst nightmare! If they can "fix anything," then why couldn't they correctly replace the shocks and struts on my car?! Salem Boys also could not stand behind their own work in my case. In February 2010, I took my car to Salem Boys to have the shocks and struts replaced. Here's a condensed version of my story. Failed Attempt #1: The mechanic didn't have the shocks seated properly, so they popped in and out of place. Don't they test drive the vehicle before they let the customer drive it home? Failed Attempt #2: There's a metallic rattling noise that can be heard from inside the car. I go back to Salem Boys again, ride with the mechanic. He thinks he's fixed it. Failed Attempt #3: The rattle comes back and a new problem develops. I ride with a second mechanic. Thud, thump noise, and slow compression/rebound due to a defective shock. Was it incorrectly installed again? I don't know, and never find out. Salem Boys replaces the shock. Failed Attempt #4: Excessive bouncing, feels like shocks are soft. I contact Mark Salem directly. Immediately takes defensive approach. Eventually, I have to take the car to get the work done correctly somewhere else. Salem refers me to the manufacturer to get a partial refund. He won't acknowledge the fact that the car has been in his shop several times, and unsuccessfully repaired each time. I had the shocks replaced by mechanics who were qualified and specialists in Japanese imports. They discover Salem Boys incorrectly installed the front struts.... The events above started from 02/16/10 until today, 07/23/10, so far. I highly recommend that if you have a problem with Salem Boys Auto, address it immediately and make sure you have documentation of every failed attempt to fix your car, even if you're having to go back and have them fix the same recurring problem. Request a receipt if you are not given one. There's no guarantee the BBB will resolve your dispute; however, it's important to notify them, so if a pattern develops, it can be addressed, and eventually affect the rating. The Attorney General, Federal Trade Commission, local news, small claims court, and the Automotive Service Excellence staff can all be contacted for assistance if you believe you're being unfairly treated. ASE states they don't normally handle complaints, but if they get enough complaints about the same shop, they may also address the issue(s). If any shop fails to provide you with written documentation of a subsequent visit to their shop for any attempt to repair or correct a mistake they made, notify the Attorney General's Office as soon as possible. 09/12/12 edit. The truth is that there were only two offers, not four, as Salem claims in his response below. I saved his emails with those "offers." Salem did not offer a refund for the labor in either offer, even though both his mechanics failed to properly fix my car. His offer #2 was "upgraded" shocks from the same mfg, but his mechanics would still have to do the work. Given Salem's terrible track record with my car, I went with offer #1 because I knew something was still wrong, and the car needed to be fixed. Offer #1 was the shock manufacturer allowing a refund for the shocks, but not the labor. When I took my car to the Honda certified mechanics, they alerted me that the shocks Salem's shop had installed were were not properly seated, causing problems once again. Bolts were also not tightened, and a part was missing. Salem was not concerned with doing the job right or my safety, mind you, only with keeping the money for the labor even though I asked for a refund. Salem breached the contract by not performing the last installation properly, and still kept my money. I wasn't going back to any other offer. I was asking for a refund for the labor which was owed me regardless of any offer, but Salem for some reason felt he was entitled to the money for doing the job wrong. When the owner of a repair shop charges a customer for his mechanics' mistakes, how is that "putting the customer first?" How is that not stealing from the customer? Any offer made to the customer does not excuse a shop from having to do the work properly. I didn't break the contract since Salem already had my money. Salem simply would not refund the money for the labor even though he was at fault. Really?! Dragging this on for 4 months was "trying to make me happy?" My only mistake was going there in the first place. If I can save someone else the trouble of having to go through this, then that's satisfaction in spades for me. read more

ED has authority to tell me to take my business and shove it-go elsewhere since I question whether another $1200 will resolve problem. Salem Boys are only half a block from my office, but I'll never take my car to them again!! I took my Nissan Altima to have a couple of things checked out and one of them was the tire pressure light on the dash stayed on all the time. Tires are new and the air pressure was fine, so I told them I might have a faulty sensor. Salem boys told me no problem they would check it out but it would cost $100 for a diagnostic check which is not applied to the repair. Total charge to repair the sensor was $300.00, but the tire pressure light on the dash continued to stay and driving home the tire maintenance warning light also came on. I was told by Salem Boys that they could not program the sensor, and I would have to take it to a Nissan dealer. Why didn't they just tell me that in the first place, instead of them "sticky it to me" for something that they couldn't do?? Bottom line is that I had to take my car to the dealer and ended up paying twice for the same service. I learned my lesson!!!!!! John read more

DON'T do it! $1400 for a/c repair when compressor went out. Lied and said had to replace the drier too in order to get warranty on compressor -- I called around and that is NOT true. Compressor was the ONLY problem I had. After I got it back, started with problems of cold, then heater would come on when A/C selected. Finally ONLY heater. Funny, that wasn't an issue BEFORE I took it to them. Took it back and they said now they need another $250! NO WAY! It's blowing hotter than BEFORE I took it in. To top it off, the guy on the phone was a JERK and talked down to me and was rude. NEVER, EVER again. Save your money! Go elsewhere! AND they won't put you through to owner when there is an issue. Guess he's used to these calls and doesn't want to bother dealing with customers. One star is too high. They have a very nice shop, but they can afford it with the money they steal from taking advantage of single women. Oh, and they scratched up the console on my car in the process! Gee, THANKS! And in response to your response: I did not treat your daughter in any negative manner, I did not talk to your daughter in any negative manner, and I definitely did not threaten your daughter! So again there is a definite problem at your shop. And I, too, am not just single, I am a widow and I have four kids. read more

My family has gone here for years. I bought a used car a recently and got the used car inspection from Salem Boys. I had a complete list of everything that needed to be done. They urged me to do brakes spark plugs and several other things. Cost was to high for me so I went off and wanted to do the work myself. I was warned as I left but new I could do the work. When I go in and start working on the list of things. I find that the brakes I'm warned are only metal are 75% good. Then I come to the spark plugs and sure enough they are almost brand new as well. I hear all the time shops try to complete or get you to buy work that doesn't need done. I don't know what's changed here but it sucks I can trust them to be honest with me anymore. read more

Overall I am very disappointed with Salem boys. We gave them every opportunity. They were unfailingly polite, but unhappily inconsistent in quality. Some work was done well. Some had to be reworked, so apparently it depended on the mechanic. And Salem boys made it very clear that they would not stand behind their work. One example is a catalytic converter replacement. The first one failed. We paid for a replacement. Within two weeks the second catalytic converter failed. Salem challenged me to have it replaced at another shop. I took the car to a reputable local repair shop who tested my car thoroughly, could find no reason for the catalytic converter to fail, and replaced it. The new part is still working several months later and no issues. I will never do business with Salem again. read more

This is as Good as it gets in a Auto repair shop. I originally went to Salem Boys because I saw Scott On Good Morning Arizona and heard him on his radio show. I guess TV works to set you up as an expert. I must of passed his shop hundreds of time over the years never realizing it was his shop. Then one day I was in need and I decided to give him a try. I loved everything about the experience from the clean lobby to the free soda, water and coffee. To the 1970's priced snacks in the old vending machine. OK I know you shouldn't like a auto shop because of the treats, but it was more then that. It was the fact that they drove me to work after I dropped off my car and picked me up when my car was done. I loved the fact that they recommended the things that needed to done and also the things that should be done if I'm going to do the things that needed to done. The people are friendly and you have a feeling that they are going to do the job correct the first time. Now they aren't cheap, but they aren't expensive either. They are right in there price wise. They have always done a great Job and I will continue to go back to them as long as I live in the area. When I move I will ask them for a recommendation for another repair shop near my new House and I know they will give me one. Honest Folk doing a honest days work for a honest Dollar or two. Never again! I took my car to Salem Boys a couple of years ago with an engine problem. When they called me to say it was ready I went in and paid their very high price for the repair. When I drove it out of their facility heading home I found it was not properly repaired so I went back immediately. They put a mechanic on it while I waited. After over an hour he pronounced it as now running perfectly. Going home again I discovered it was still not repaired right, I was late and out of patience. The next day I took it to a well known auto repair facility here in the east valley. They spent about an hour on it and fixed the problem. It is still running fine. SUMMARY: (1.) Their (Salem Boys) prices are way too high (2.) Their quality control sucks. After two shots at it they still couldn't get it right. My time is valuable; I didn't want to waste a third trip in there.
