We stayed here in mid October, 2024. The suite we chose was nice and clean. The free breakfast and parking really came in handy during an extra busy season in Salem. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a very comfortable stay at the Salem Inn. We try to stay in Bed and Breakfasts when we travel so naturally gravitated toward the Salem Inn. It was so close to the main square so we could easily walk everywhere we needed to be. We stayed in West House, you should note that they have three different buildings that are a part of the Salem Inn. There is a parking lot to park your car so they give you a free parking pass for your stay. It's a few blocks from the inn so expect to walk to your car id you need to use it at any point during your stay. They have a small driveway for loading and unloading your belongings. Since the inn was so close to downtown, we never needed to access the car for the few nights we stayed. Breakfast was great and they had a limited menu to choose from, but we loved that it was included with our stay.

Beautiful Inn and such comfortable beds. Loved the whirlpool in my room as well as the glycerin homemade soap and lavender salts for it- beautiful touch. Breakfast was great and loved seeing the basement and how the dining area is- definitely takes you back in time. Hidden gem in the backyard with little 2 seater iron table and chairs, flowers and plants on the old brick cobblestone- it erases all the hustle around the area away. Would have gave a 5 but front desk employee is why I didn't. Already did a review on a Google site and dont want to ergo through it- I will only say when u ask them what they feel customer service is to be and she says " to give you adequate service".. and mind u I paid over a $1000 for a few days - Adequate ? Ate u kidding me?

We stayed at the Curwen House for two nights at the beginning of July, 2019. This Inn is not accessible if you have difficulty walking stairs and getting around. There is a charm to the place, I will give it that. You will have to walk a couple of blocks and down a steep set of stairs into the basement of the main building to take advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast (complete with an omelette station), which I might add I enjoyed both mornings. The pillows are old and hard and on our second night there I noticed the mold/mildew on the shower curtain (see photos) and garden tub jets and was horrified. Keep in mind that this is not a "no tell motel", like you see on the tv show Law and Order SVU, but a $275.00 (or whatever it was) per night Inn. I do not recommend this Inn based off of the lack of cleanliness. It was completely unacceptable and if we were not checking out the next morning and it was not 11:00 at night I might have called the main house and asked to move. It was the end of our stay and there really was no point. Lesson learned? Check the shower first thing!

I'm not someone who rushes to Yelp, but this stay earned the effort…read more I recently stayed at The Merchant for the second time, and whatever magic existed during my first visit is gone. The biggest issue: the hotel hosted a large, ticketed public event that completely took over the main lobby--with zero advance notice to guests. I woke up to a lobby packed with strangers and nowhere to sit or gather with my family. I've never stayed at a hotel that allows a public event to fully overrun its only common area without warning paying guests. And no, "just go somewhere else" isn't an option--there is nowhere else. There are no additional common spaces and no elevator. Since we were meeting elderly family members, climbing three to four flights of stairs to our room wasn't possible. The lobby being unusable wasn't a minor inconvenience; it was a dealbreaker. Operationally, things only went downhill. Check-in is at 4pm, but arrive after 5pm and there's no one on-site to check you in. Checkout, however, is rigidly 11am. Our room was never cleaned during the stay, despite leaving the "please clean" tag on the door. Because of the limited staffing hours, we couldn't even get fresh towels. Then there's the mouse. I saw one in the common area and notified staff. Nothing was done. Food is left out uncovered for guests, which I promptly avoided--because "boutique hotel meets rodent buffet" isn't really my vibe. What's also new: some sort of train or underground rumbling that shakes the building roughly every hour, offering a front-row seat to what feels like an earthquake simulator. If this were a budget motel or a Holiday Inn, I might shrug and move on. But this is a $500-per-night hotel, and at that price point, these issues are unacceptable. Until these problems are addressed, I wouldn't recommend staying here--and I certainly won't be returning.

Great location--right in the center. Two things of note--we stayed on the 6th floor, room 622. The 6th floor is the pet-friendly floor (we didn't have any pets), and my husband opened the door to get ice and there was a mini Doberman pinscher (cute!) desperate to get in our room. Then the owner came around the corner and could not figure out why he wanted to get in our room so bad. My husband went in search of the ice and saw the couple with the dog was staying in the room that would be exactly parallel to ours on the other side. I had a great sleep. Husband did as well except around 3 or so he was awoken to a hard poking several times on his shoulder. He said I was dead asleep and facing away so it was not me. We are both FAR from superstitious and don't believe in ghosts etc, so his mind went to someone broke in--but everything was locked up quite securely. He even checked under the bed! After the fact we found out about its ghost stories with specifically the 6th floor--specifically room 612. Again we were room 622, so does 612 (with the doggie) mirror ours? Other people have also mentioned getting poked as well, which we again didn't see about the hotel till after. So between the desperate dog and the poke, probably nothing--but most creeped out I've been in a while!! (Not so creeped out that we wouldn't go back!)

We all stop what we we were doing and walked safely to this hotel. I went to the front desk to let the lady working on July 9 around midnight about this guest being lost, and she was extremely rude, annoyed and told me that she the guest has been calling the hotel for three hours asking for help. The lady who is working, the Front Desk has short gray hair and was very rude and obviously did not care about a guest at this hotel. If a guest is lost, wouldn't it be the right thing to do by assisting them instead of complaining about a loss elderly guest who was a retired school teacher? When other people in the hotel were leaving, the same lady was talking to another lady about the guest and talking about how rude they were and how much they were drinking, though when I was there, I did not witness any of this. When I recommend going to this hotel based off of the people who represent this Brand, the answer is no.

We did have a car, and while the attached garage made things convenient, the daily parking fee felt high for what it is (almost $30 a day). Just a heads-up. Also, there is self-park, and at risk of sounding cheap, here's a tip to save you on some tips... valet is optional, and I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where it's less necessary. Self-park is the same price, but you spare yourself the constant tipping, which feels like one more tiny cash grab unless maybe the garage fills up at certain times and they have to move cars elsewhere. The room was nice enough for a short stay, though some acceptable / common deficiencies are starting to show -- scuffed walls, certain outlets loosening up so the prongs don't stay in well, one bulb burned out, etc. But the beds were comfortable enough, the bedding seemed clean, the bathroom was also clean and the shower worked well, and the room overall still had a reasonably new look and style to it. The pool was also clean, warm, and the overall pool area looked well maintained with plenty of clean towels available and a good amount of seating. The pool deck definitely gets a little slick when wet, so watch your step. Breakfast was almost exactly what you'd expect from similar U.S. chain hotels -- pre-made omelets or scrambled eggs depending on the day, home fries, paper-thin bacon or sausage patties, a few cereals and yogurts, a make-your-own waffle station, a couple fruit options, a push-button juice machine, instant oatmeal, etc. There's a good amount of seating, and a handful of tables have their own TVs (though you may have to hunt for a remote, and you might get some cross-room interference if someone else points theirs the wrong way). One interesting detail: breakfast isn't on the ground floor, and you can't reach it via the elevator without a keycard. I assume that's intentional to reduce non-guest walk-ins. Overall, I'd stay here again for the location and reasonable price -- just with the caveat to budget for the nearly $30/day parking or have a workaround ready. The convenience makes it tolerable, but it's definitely something to be aware of.

You're going to have to carry your luggage from wherever you find parking, which wasn't a problem for a short stay. We ponied up for a king suite and a private bathroom. That bathroom, however, has a floating barn door so you better be really comfortable with your travel companion because you're going to hear everything.
