My honest review with a letter system. Booking: A I called and it was easy to book. There was an appointment for less than a week later which was perfect. Salon ambiance: A. It was spacious with enough room between each chair. There was 2000's music playing. It was clean: someone was coming around sweeping up hair and picking up dirty towels frequently. It was a nice facility. The service: A- I got a highlight and haircut. It was a typical service for what i wanted. She washed my hair and even curled it which was nice. She was a little rough when pulling out the foils and I was in pain for some of the time lol. The product: D+ It had been a while since i had gotten highlights and i told her I wanted to go a lot lighter. She told me she wasn't going to be able to get me as blonde as I wanted, it would take a few sessions. I appreciated having that heads up, but then once I got home, it didn't really even look like much was done besides a root touch up. People I see daily didn't even notice I had gotten anything done. I also didn't ask for layers and my hair is not all the same length. Price: D- I was appalled with the price. When I called, I asked how much the service I wanted would be and she couldn't give me an exact price but she said they have different levels of experience starting at $150. I opted for the middle level so was expecting to pay between $150-$200. When I checked out, it was $290 before tip just for a highlight and trim. She also told me she would put a bottle of conditioner she wanted me to use up at the front for me. She never asked me if I wanted it or anything, so I expected a sample bottle for cheap or complimentary. When checking out, I noticed on my bill it was a $40 bottle and I was upset that I was never given the option to not purchase it, so just be careful of that. So after tip and this product, it was $400 for a product I wasn't even exactly happy with. Because of this, I will not be returning. read more

Huge difference of what I asked for and what I was given. As they say, a picture is worth a thousands of words. This was done by a senior hair stylist at this salon, giving two stars for her being very friendly. She seems to know the theory behind the hair coloring but not so good when it comes to apply her theory in real time practice. I gave her two chances, none of it she got it right. First time I left the salon with slightly changed hair, of about 10% change, my roots were hardly touched. I looked similarly as I first entered the salon. Second time, I was given intense highlights of different shades such as orange, brassy, ashy, golden, yellow etc. Third time I was told, I would be charged for them to fix their own mess. This place is not serious, has a snobby vibe and I regret giving them four years of business. When new to Charlotte, I was told about "Ashley" there and SHE - was good - back in 2019. She listened to what I wanted and did it - which was great as the pandemic started and my hair looked awesome and grew out well for a year and a half. But she had the good sense to move on and was gone after COVID. I then saw an intern type and had my long hair cut to my CHIN and hair dye left in overnight. Jason the owner fixed it the next day so I forgave it. Then I found Ally before taking a job with six months of travel at a time. She did an excellent job on my hair in June 2022, so when I was almost coming back for Xmas 2022 I emailed the salon and sent pictures and said "I love my hair - do I need a full balayage while home? I'm thinking just a touch up?" They wrote back and said "We showed Ally your pictures and she said full balayage." I went in at Xmas and the look I had loved was demolished. (I only realized recently they had likely NEVER shown her my pics or told her how happy I was, as the people emailing cannot be trusted. It was a money grab, and Ally lost me as a client. That should have been it for Salon42 (and it was in my head) but they emailed they had a new designer Sam, good with Fashion Colors, etc, so I tried him last month as I am now home for good, and STILL need to find someone amazing. I went in with the same video of the cut I've wanted for four years now, that nobody can do (long hair with shorter layers - not rocket science). I emailed the salon for a month before meeting him and asking questions, and learned he knew nothing about me or my video or pics when he met me. He was overconfident and promised me the best haircut ever, then spent the consult AND the appointment telling me I didn't want to do red chunks, that I wanted blond. I had to really fight for the red I eventually got. Then he was done the haircut and though nice, I had NO short layers except around my face. I asked where they were after ALL that discussion, and he acted surprised and told me I didn't want short layers. I had to leave at that point after FOUR hours to get to work. For that I paid $300 (they had made me give a $50 deposit prior to appt, but I had to point that out to them, so on top of all this they didn't trust me and easily would have not subtracted the deposit had I not reminded them). With tip it was close to $400. Sam said I could contact him on Instagram but he reads nothing, even when I wrote in a comment to please check his DMs. I left for South America on a trip and the red left my hair in less than 10 days, despite my washing in cold water. Worse was my cut. It's still too long and heavy so has been kept up in a ponytail. I finally saw the exact haircut I wanted on a lady in Colombia and she said I could see her stylist and get the cut for 50,000 Pesos ($12.50!!!) Honestly, I should have done it. Instead, I emailed the salon saying I needed to come back in for color upon my return and asking if he would please cut me a few more layers and if not - I would see this person in another country. They couldn't be bothered to write me back. So that is that - FINALLY. Not only are they arrogant and overpriced, but they are really not that skilled and completely dishonest. I've had long hair with choppy shorter layers for decades from every salon I've been to all over the world. Only here was I judged for trying obsessively to explain what I wanted. They tell me no problem then do what they want to do - long heavy layers. Finding a good salon in Charlotte is indeed a challenge, which is why I kept trying different people at this one, but I am done with them. They have treated me with an appalling amount of disrespect, despite my remaining loyal after several bad experiences. read more

I flew into town for a party and I needed a last minute blow-out for New Year's Eve and couldn't find anywhere to go. I called their location in Myers park and they were all booked up, but they got me in at their South Park location and everyone was super nice. They did an amazing job with the shampoo and style out. I made an appointment for a haircut and coloring with Erica, as she has good reviews on Yelp. I was pleased with receptionist's greetings and a complimentary coffee. First, Erica said she can only do haircut as she is fully booked. That was odd, as I called and specially asked Erica as I wanted to color my hair. Well, fine, lets only do haircut then. Then I told her how I want to cut my hair short and color it to pastel pink color, but was indecisive. I decided to keep my length for now, as we are not coloring today. I was taking to her about my doubts and desires regarding coloring my hair, and at some point she got annoyed and said: "first you have to make your mind!" I showed the hairstylist 3 photos of golden blonde, warm hair and specifically said what I wanted. She gave me ashy, dirty-blonde hair. She re-did the process and it was lighter but not the golden blonde I wanted. I'm quite disappointed that I spent hundreds of dollars on a cut and color that could not look like the photos after two attempts. read more

Curly-haired clients would be better served elsewhere. When setting my appointment, I asked specifically for a stylist with experience working with curly hair and was assured that could be accommodated. Even after thoroughly communicating about my curl type and desired length of hair (with dry curls, not wet hair), the stylist went on to give me something completely different; I asked for my curls to be resting on my shoulders and I now have hair that, even when soaking wet, doesn't even reach them. My stylist did not even have her own diffusing tools, despite claiming to be well-acquainted with curly hair styling and (presumably) aware I'd be coming in. On the plus side, my hair has a great base from which to grow and is well-shaped despite its length. The staff is very kind and, from what I can tell, great with straighter hair. read more

So happy I found Salon 42 (specifically Marissa Hughes). After moving to Charlotte and having gone to the same stylist for the last 10+ years I was nervous I wouldn't find someone who could expertly perfect the look I desired. I tried a few salons out in the area only to be disappointed... but Marissa took the time to listen to what I wanted, ask questions and explain what she was going to do. I have been going to Salon 42 for 3 years now and couldn't be happier with my hair! I have fine blonde hair that can easily be damaged without special care. Knowing that I am in good hands with this Salon, I've felt comfortable enough to try tape in extensions, a wide variety of color from light to dark, and several haircut styles. All of which have turned out great and my hair is healthier than ever. The results are great, and the service is even better! The salon is very clean, each member of the staff is very friendly, and they're considerate of your time while you are there. What I appreciate the most is that the hairstylists I've gone to (Jason, Marissa, and Whitney) all continue to learn new techniques and the latest trends to stay ahead of the curve. I came to this salon with a sob story of hair disasters. To sum it up a stylist in NY took my hair super dark and then tried to bleach it all at once, leaving me with burnt hair that was falling out. After spending almost a year with another stylist in NY working on correcting it I moved to CLT with hair that was healing but that I hated. When I booked my appointment here, after lots of online research, I spoke with the receptionist at another location and she suggested Marissa. After my first visit with Marissa I was happy, not ecstatic but happy. A year later I would never recommend anyone go see Marissa and I have personally not been to her in over a year. Every time I went in I would explain that while I wanted my hair to be more blonde than it naturally is I did not want it to be platinum or look incredibly fake. Every visit left me leaving the salon paying more money than the last visit and with hair that looked more and more like a 1990s bottle blonde Playboy model. The last straw was seeing the pictures from my sister's wedding. I had gone in the week before, as suggested by Marissa to let the color have time to settle or something, and AGAIN explained that I wanted it to look more natural than it currently did. I should have walked out then because Marissa simply stated "let's add more blonde!" Being scared that I couldn't find another appointment before the wedding and not wanting to have awful roots I sat in the chair and let her do her thing. Once I saw the wedding photos I instantly cancelled my next appointment with her and started searching for a new stylist. My hair looks like yellow piss in the pictures and my roots were still INCREDIBLY noticeable after not even a week. While the salon looks nice this place isn't worth half the prices they charge. Maybe I should have walked out or spoken with the management but after and year and all of the money I spent there I couldn't bring myself to even consider giving them another shot. I've successfully found another stylist, whom I won't mention here but who I have also reviewed on Yelp, who actually listens to her clients and gives them the hair they've been dreaming of. read more

Horrible!!!! Go elsewhere Went in for a semi-permanent color, cut and eyebrow wax. The stylist put permanent color on instead. Did a crappy job waxing my eyebrows and the cut was uneven in the front. In a word: love. I started seeing Erica Poppo a little over a year ago. She has taken me on quite the hair journey. She's super skilled with fun color which gave me the courage to try a few funky things (she's turned me Barbie blond; purple; brunette, again; blonde, again; purple/ blue/pink to name a few). She does a really good job at listening to my ramblings about what I have in mind (and looking at the dozens of screen shot photos) and translating it into a hair-do that I love. Can't rave enough about her. The salon itself is cute. It's got plenty of parking which is nice. The rest of the staff are very friendly. You know the hair you see and clip out of a magazine (or pin on Pinterest, as it were) and you know darn well your hair will never look like that but you bring it to your stylist hoping against hope that THIS TIME is the time that the stars align and your hair actually looks how you hope it will look when you leave the salon? You guys, it actually happened to me! I have my dream haircut and Marissa performed a miracle. I had gone to my last salon in Charlotte for years and years and the color was always nice but the haircuts were...okay. The last time I went I left in shock because the cut was so BAD. Like, awful. So I put off finding a new stylist until I HAD to and I am thrilled to say Marissa made all the bad go away! It has been about two and a half weeks and my cut still looks good. Not just "good the day it is cut and professionally styled' It looks AH-MAZE-ING on the daily people! Before I left I made an appointment to bayalage my hair, I had dyed it at home a bright purple at the beginning of October for Halloween but I was so over looking like a muppet had fallen asleep on my head. Marissa gave me some stuff to pull as much purple out of the hair as I could prior to the re-dying and it worked so well it turned my hair into a lovely lavender shade haha, combined with my haircut my hair was magazine-worthy! This place is awesome!! I got a balayage & cut done, it turned out great. My hair stylist was Marissa, she's very sweet and professional. And really cool to have a conversation with, which is nice because I know some stylists can be cold. I had to come back to get the full color I wanted, which was in my hair's best interest, Marissa explained that too much bleaching and dying could extremely damage the hair. I also came back a few weeks later for a special event and there was some trouble and the makeup artist couldn't make it, but Marissa stepped in and did my makeup for me as well as my hair, it turned out great! She made me feel very comfortable which was great because when it comes to haircuts I tend to be a little bit silent about what I want and don't want. I got the $375 Brazilian Blowout and I would say that it did not show effectiveness whatsoever. I had gotten the treatment probably a dozen times before and this did not show results. Usually it should help with hair styling and frizziness for 12-16 weeks, but for me, it lasted maybe a week or so and then it went back to looking like my unruly curly hair in the humidity. I love the treatment but I will be going to another salon for this as in the past, I would be seeing the results for 6+ weeks before showing any decline. read more

My hair was destroyed by Kay, who is a so-called "senior designer". What she calls "texturizing" I call weedwacking - although my yard guy at least gets a nice clean edge with his weedwacker. My hair however looks like a 5 year old cut it. The color looked like shoe polish - my hair had no shine or depth to it whatsoever. I paid over $230 for this worst-of-my-life experience. When I went to another salon to have someone look at it, he pulled over another designer and they exchanged a look that clearly meant "wow this is messed up".
