I found Salon 718 via yelp a couple of years ago. I have very long, dark, thin hair and am pretty terrified of hairdressers because of some bad experiences. My life changed the day I met Karina; she is patient, thoughtful and always takes the time to listen to my concerns and needs. I am always amazed that Karina remembers small details even though I don't see her very often, she is the most efficient cutter I have ever seen AND I have fun every time I'm there. On top of all this, I'm a woman in her 30s and never dyed my hair because I was convinced at a young age that girls with black hair can't get highlights...I trust Karina so much that I gave her carte Blanche to highlight away and it came out so gorgeous. I am so glad I decided to book an appointment with this salon. I've been living in Manhattan/Brooklyn for 3 years and haven't been able to find a place that I really like until today!! I came in with a lifelong habit of getting blond highlights and told Karina I wanted brown/auburn bayalage (Pinterest can make you feel like anything is possible!) However, Karina took the time to explain to me the difficulties in obtaining that look since I had so much blond color in my hair and how the oxidation process worked. After looking at a lot of pictures together we finally figured out what would be the best look for me and it turned out amazing!! I love that Karina was straight up with me and told me the truth about the idea I came in with- she genuinely had my best interests in mind. Shannon was also amazing because she told me what brow liner I could use to help my eyebrows match my new dark locks and also how to apply it. I've been going to Aida at Salon 718 at both the Vanderbilt + DUMBO locations for two haircuts now over the last 6 months. I live in DC, and will continue to come up to Brooklyn to get my hair cut, as I have curly/frizzy hair that is difficult to manage sometimes. I also usually just air-dry and throw it in a low bun. Aida has been awesome! She's given me a lot of tips/product advice, and I'll be seeing her every couple months from now on. Can't recommend enough. A belated response to the salon's response to my original review. I definitely really did appreciate that Karina fixed the cut at no cost. She did a great job listening to me and corrected many of the problems with the cut, including the lack of layering around my face and the back (which even my husband, who doesn't notice anything, said "looked funny" originally - and then said looked "way better" after Karina went to work on it). So that's all great. I was no longer vaguely unhappy every time I looked in the mirror. I definitely left with the impression that Karina cared about what I wanted and that she had the skills to fix bad cuts. However, it shouldn't have taken a return visit to fix a botched job to find a stylist who would sit and listen to me and look at my hair for a few minutes before rushing into a cut. And even during that consultation, Karina managed to convey to me that what I was looking for was somehow "very unusual" among their clientele and that's why Jenn didn't deliver it, because she couldn't believe I wanted it - which made me feel like a bit of a freak (who definitely didn't belong at that salon) but also proved my original point - that there was never a proper consultation regarding what I was looking for. read more

I'm surprised by all the good reviews. I did not enjoy my experience here. I booked an appointment after I read online that this salon does the Deva Chan method. When I arrived, I was not offered a water or coffee, and no one was even really friendly. Yet, many other customers were being offered beverages. The Stylist cut my hair and sent me for a wash, to which the girl told me I needed a deep conditioner. Little did I know that was $50. You should probably tell people that since the whole tub cost $60 to buy and I would have just done that and opened it right there. My cut was almost $200 by the time I paid which was laughable and not even the cut price I was told on the phone when I made the appointment. The cut was okay but average and definitely not worth the money. The next haircut I got I paid $80 elsewhere and the cut was way better, they even had to fix areas which were not cut properly at 718. I will never go back. Too snobby! I have since spoken to other people who have had the same experience there. read more

I walked into this salon dejected from a mediocre cut and colour from a high end place. My hair hung limply and was the texture of straw. I have no idea how they did it but I had a treatment and Jen 'fixed' up the cut and my hair was great. As it grew in it got even better. I live far away but came back for a second cut with Jen plus highlights. Great, great cut. I'm thrilled! Karina is the absolute best! I have really thick hair (there's a lot of it!) and she cuts it perfectly every time. I always get compliments!

Hair stylist was incredibly patient and helpful however seems to have limited to no experience working with "ethnic hair". Took her several tries to be able to manage my hair and even after doing so, we were unable to achieve the look I was trying to go for. My hair did not even last through the night. It was unraveling within a couple of hours of having it done. Its incredibly overpriced given the fact that it went completely unnoticeable that I had my hair done. All in all, I would recommend for anyone with silky/thick hair. My hair stylist was extremely nice and polite but skills seemed limited. I appreciated her patience but overall dissatisfied with how my hair came out. read more

I love Salon 718. The aura of the salon is extremely soothing and the staff is really nice. They will give you an honest opinion on any hair style your contemplating. I've been to the salon approximately four times and Kai (my stylist) has took her time to teach me about the products that can help my hair grow, what products keep my curl pattern in tact with a wash and go (which has been the most difficult product for me to find ) and she has introduced me to different techniques to keep my hair healthy. Great customer service from receptionist and hair stylists! Eddie did my color, absolutely beautiful natural color, looks great! I got a cut from Karina who was super nice and did a great job but it was super quick and looked kind of the same as when I came in but that could have been my lack of direction. It was my first time at Salon 718 after going to multiple places in the city for color/cuts and to find the right stylist. Karina was absolutely amazing- she gave me a thorough consultation, asking me what I wanted and also giving me her honest opinion on what would look best with my hair with respect to color AND the cut. She is extremely knowledgable and confident, which makes you feel like you're in good hands and I can def say that I was! I have dark hair and wanted to go lighter ombre and Karina gave me the look I wanted with a consult to come back for some lighter pieces since she didn't want my hair to go through too much all at once. I already made an appt to go back! The overall atmosphere is great! The appt is super easy to make and they send a text to confirm your appt. As soon as I got in they offered coffee/tea and even gave me a glass of bubbly during my color, which was great. Mo took time to shampoo my hair and gave me a great head massage and the staff is super friendly and nice. The vibe is great and I would def. recommend this spot! It's friendliness of the staff and stylist makes me feel bad about writing this. I went to this salon because I was looking for a cheaper alternative to Devachan. Which at $78, I should've went to a jr stylist or bit the bullet and just paid more for someone I know can cut curly hair. I really don't like my haircut. She cut it too short, which I usually don't get upset with because it's hair it will grow back, but I don't like it because it's not really in a style. I should have held my ground more when she put mouse in it. I knew mouse wouldn't work, but she insisted that this was different and unlike other mouses. But wrong my hair looked like I stuck my finger in an electric socket within an hour. When I came home and restyled my hair with products I like. I notice that my hair has even less shape, imagine 70's bowl haircut but curly. And one side is noticeably longer. It's like she got my curl pattern wrong. I did see people with straight hair that I thought their hair looked cute. But if you're a curly girl, I can't recommend this place. I've actually had better cuts from people who straighten it and then cut it. read more

Salon 718 is my favorite Salon and Karina is my goddess, stylist. I would follow her anywhere! Used to work in Brooklyn so it was super convenient, now I work on the Upper East Side, live on the Upper West Side and still come to Brooklyn (both locations) to have my hair done. The vibe at the Vanderbilt shop is great. Everyone is friendly and make you feel comfortable. There is no hard sell on services and products, which I love. Karina is highly professional and highly skilled. I once wanted to make a drastic change that she thought would make me unhappy. Her approach was perfect and we made a better style decision together. Most salons these days are so pretentious. This place is not at all but are still style savvy and cutting edge. Definitely not what was I expecting from an official deva cut. I went to this salon specifically because i couldn't get to the deva salon in mahattan and it was a totally different to my expectations. First of all they didn't use deva products which you think they would if you officially are getting a deva cut. That wouldn't have bothered me so much if they actually knew what they were doing when it came to cutting curly hair. I specifically told the stylist I wanted a trim and my layers recut. Instead she went scissor happy on me and started doing random snips, completely ignoring where my layers were before. I walked out my hair was too hort and my layers were completely UNEVEN and a general mess that made my hair get that hated triangular shape. If you have curly hair like I do I would not recommend you trust them to give you a good cut. read more
