This place looked very busy coming in. However, there were many stylists working so we waited less than a minute to be seated. Stylist I got definitely had skill. She also cut my hair using mainly scissors which reminded me of haircuts in Japan. She was precise and went over different parts of my head to ensure that nothing was missed and hair alignment was matching. I'm a big fan of massage style shampoo services and though I didn't get much of that, the end product was great. Overall, I recommend both women and men to give this place a try. They are efficient, friendly, and willing to make sure it gets done right. This place is all about being specific so if you have a particular style you want, it's best to voice that. I have had a rather disappointing experience at Salon Eva primarily due to their handling of appointment schedules. I booked my appointment for 9:30, the time salon opens. I arrived 5 minutes early, the hair dresser Jennifer who I had appointment with was working on someone. She told me to wait for 5 minutes. Several five minutes passed, she was still working on the other person. It was then I realized she was coloring that person's hair. Obviously it was not a five minutes work. When I inquired about the delay, the response was vague. This lack of transparency and disregard for my time was frustrating. While the salon's ambiance and services might be commendable, their approach to appointment management and honesty with clients leaves much to be desired. Almost 3 years in Honolulu and finally found Ava for my Japanese straightening! So hard to find someone do to me with blond highlights. This has been my salon since the Pandemic and I have been happy coming here since. The salon itself is very clean which Is Important for me when I come to a establishment. They follow all protocols for safety measures such has temperature screening and hand sanitizing when entering. The chairs are socially distanced and the staff are all wearing masks. My hairstylist Joni makes this salon 5 stars. She is very accommodating and personable. She will give you the stylish cut that you are trying to achieve. Came here for Japanese hair straightening. This was the first time I got the procedure done after I left Japan, where I had it done over a dozen times. For those who are unaware, on average it only cost $150 for straightening and haircut in Japan and no extra charge for density or length of hair. Naturally I was nervous to go anywhere and with the cost (and no one willing to give a firm price until you are there or done) of it in the states I waited over almost 2 years before I got it redone, when I normally redo every 6 months. I decided to give this place a try due to positive reviews and claims of decent pricing. The owner and another young man (perhaps in training) worked on my hair. He really took care to straighten my hair with the flat iron and did not comment once on how dense and thick my hair was. I was very happy with his patience and dedication because he was offered to take a lunch break and he refused. Overall, the straightening was good. My results are good and holding, it has been about 2 weeks now. Damage was minimal considering I had color treated hair already and a history of straightening. Total cost $250 + tip + $50 in shampoo & conditioner. She tried semi hard to sell it to me, and considering the cost for the straightening, I let her and considered it additional tip. Lost a star for two reasons: First, they straightened with my hair split down the middle. I do not split my hair in the middle. It was something that I never had to bring up because the stylist always asks, this is where you split your hair right? Unfortunately not the case this time. It completely slipped my mind too and I didn't even figure it out until 2 days later when I washed my hair and was like.. something doesn't feel right. I am forcing my hair with wax to the side it was on, but bangs are not always cooperating. Which brings us to reason #2... I asked for my bangs to be cut under my eyes... I even pointed with my hands where and commented how I like my eyes covered by my hair. But she still cut them above my eyes. I did write a review before. but here's my story. I bought the deal for the Japanese Perm. I'm mixed with african american so my hair is pretty kinky, but i HAVE received this treatment before a few times in Japan and everytime i got it done it was flawless. This time i was so excited there was a deal and i didnt have to fly back! Getting my hair done in Japan i was in the salon chair for 6-8 hours each time. here is was 3. After i got it done it was back to being curly. Very dissapointed. I called back and told the owner that my hair went to frizzy and curly, and she had me come in and this time i brought my husband. i was so upset and an angry. and the owner and her other hair stylist told me "this has never happened before and we fix it really fast"...my intentions coming in there was to get it fixed but hearing the "will fix it very fast" uh no im already upset, and i dont want to work on my hair with strong chemicals "REALLY FAST" are you kidding me? so that made me more upset! so my husband and i just asked for our refund because i wasnt comfortable having someone touch my hair with the attitude of "lets just hurry up and get her out of my chair" and apparently my pictures are posted in their photo album on this site. and its pretty much a lie considering my hair never stayed straight. Im still upset, and i still crying over my hair. every monning and every night. i still tear up. i just feel like i should have gotten better customer service and my hair fixed the proper way and i wanted to be treated like they cared atleast a little bit. Was debating whether or not I should say something, but maybe someone would benefit from my experience. I even wrote a really long and detailed review, then deleted it because I felt bad, but here's the short and simple version: I came to Salon Ava for a Japanese Straight Perm touch-up twice. The first time they did an awesome job, everything was perfectly straight and there was hardly any damage. I went back about six months later because their prices are pretty fair. Second time, the lady was training somebody on my hair and it's the worst straight perm I've ever had. They broke off my bangs, which I didn't notice until they started growing out, and I am still finding wavy sections of hair at the nape of my neck and behind my ears especially. They were careless and not thorough, and not to mention, they were totally rude the second time. Oh, and did I mention she was late to top it off? The lady pointed out the damaged pieces framing my face after the process (they fried it!) and asked if I wanted a trim- I said yes please, take off the dead ends. She basically ran shears through it quickly, barely slashing it, then charged me an extra $40!! I was going to give them a decent tip, but not after that... I don't trust Salon Ava to do my hair again, so may not go back. Once again, this is the worst straight perm touch up I've ever had, and I've been having it done for four years. read more

I got a digital perm and color here almost two years ago, only because their prices were cheaper than other salons. My mistake for being cheap, I should've paid more, at least I would've had hair that doesn't make me look like Hagrid from Harry Potter. I waited on reviewing them, but now, after almost two years of getting my hair done there, my hair is still badly damaged. And I want to save other girls from looking like Hagrid, its not a nice feeling. I wanted a digital perm and then the following week, I'd get a touch up since my roots grew out. But she said she could do both during the same visit, I though why not since it'd save me from having to come in again. They didn't ask me about my part, which is very important to me. I look horrible with a middle part, but thats what I got. I tried to tell the lady I want a side part. she said it doesn't matter now, but she'll remember later when she cuts my hair. She didn't by the way... The lady who did my digital perm seemed to have no experience with doing it. I felt like I was a test subject at a beauty school. I think I was their first digital perm because the guy was taking a picture of my hair at every step and talking to the other lady in korean and another lady had to redo some of the strands the first lady did. The guy taking pics had never asked for my permission, never introduced himself or anything. I was bothered but didn't say anything. I guess I was giving him a dirty look and later he said he's taking pictures for teaching purposes. Still didn't ask me if it was ok with me...They weren't very gentle and they had to use rubber bands to hold the curlers in place, so you can imagine how that hurt. END RESULT: very very very frizzy, puffy hair that barely had curls AND I looked like a super sayian from DragonBall Z... instead of a touch up, she thought I wanted to color the whole thing, so instead of looking natural like it had before, it looked very cheap and way too bright to match my complexion. I was not happy at all. They charged me for a full color instead of the touch up like I had asked. And o top of that I had to pay them for ruining my hair. They said they'd redo it in two weeks. But instead of redoing the digital perm, I learned later that they did a spiral perm...I HATE spiral perms:(((( So not only did it damage my hair more, make it more frizzy and give me caveman hair, but they gave me the wrong perm! Needless to say I will not be coming back here. I am still struggling to get my hair to look healthy and not frizzy anymore after 2 years.. read more

Not sure why this place has so many stars.... Maybe everyone is just dazed by the fumes they encounter when getting their hair done there? Bought the living social deal for a haircut, deep condition, style, makeup touch up, a gift certificate for a future visit and something else. First off, this is a KOREAN salon, i.e. in the middle of a Korean strip mall, not that I have a problem with that but Korean hair textures are completely different than my Native American/Middle Eastern hair texture and most stylists who only work on Korean hair do not know how to work with any other hair texture, p.s. the parking sucks, its a tiny lot and really awkwardly long and narrow and they had some guy who 'directed' cars on where to park, he was a real genius. Walked in, told them I had an appointment and then had to stand outside because the couple of chairs they did have were being utilized by a herd of children who were loud & unattended too. Never caught the name of my stylist, she did not talk to me, only told me that my hair color I choose would be too dark to achieve because I had used bleach to attain a blonde color about 8 months ago, and then told me that my haircut wasn't going to look good on my face because I have a round face and if it was shorter than my shoulders I would look fat. THANKS? Also I asked that she blow dry and straighten my hair before she cut it because it ruins the natural curl and splits the ends if you cut it wet (all the other hair dressers I have ever been too HAPPILY do that and don't disagree), but she attempted to dry it and didn't even pick up the flat iron but I didn't protest because I was busy trying to remove the hair color off my forehead. Never got my makeup application, deep condition or the last thing on my deal. They ended up charging me $100 for the color.......... Which was NOT the color I wanted but I did not want to spend another minute in that salon so I said whatever, paid, did not tip (because I believe tips are EARNED and not mandatory) and told them to keep the gift certificate for someone who might actually come back. But being the brave person I was I went. I made an appointment with Yong who was very nice. She did a consultation on my hair and I told her that I had previously gotten a straight perm and needed to get my highlights touched up. She did my highlights with such skill, and deep conditioning treatment was awesome. They also did an invigorating mask while my hair was conditioning which was nice and relaxing. The cut she gave me was awesome, and edgy and after the treatment my hair was super straight! Parking is difficult. A little parking lot, and everyone trying to get in there. You can't park at Don Quijote's so I suggest getting there early to wait for a stall or find street parking which is pretty sparse. read more

I was in DIRE need of a straight perm, having put it off as long as possible to save money. So when I saw the Yelp $199 special and read the great reviews, I called Salon Ava and got in right away on a Saturday with Ava. Ava and her colleagues were incredibly friendly and professional. This is probably the 5th straight perm (aka magic straight) I've had and my hair turned out great -- straight, silky and healthy. I color my hair every 4-6 weeks due to gray coverage and it's very thick but generally healthy even with an annual straight perm -- I've been fortunate to have had experienced stylists who use good product (and I typically spend $350+). The biggest, unexpected bonus was that it only took 2.5 hours v. the 4 hours I'm used to. This was due to the fact that Ava and her colleagues help each other out with the multiple blow drying processes and the flat ironing. As I have 3 kids and am always short on time, time savings is a HUGE benefit! I highly recommend Salon Ava, with or without a special rate. They are located above Palama Market which is another bonus if you have a hankering for Korean food or need to pick up Korean groceries. read more

I know every woman who gets a straight perm gets nervous about finding a place to do it! I've been getting straight perms since I was in 5th grade so of course I'm picky. Some people are worried that after they wash their hair two days later it will come out, but there are no worries with this place! I've been coming to salon Ava since summer 2015 and got 3 straight perms up to date. I am used to chi since its strong and my hair is stubborn (Hawaiian wavy and curly). I think she uses shisheido which works great (first time) because Japanese straight perms are the way to go! Although I wish she would condition my hair instead of just shampooing (hydration), the results are great! I go to her every time I come back from college (summer and winter break) so you can imagine that it stays! I love the results and she honestly had made my life so much easier because I have hair that is a lot more manageable! There are usually two people that work on my hair (her and her son) because she has other clients and it speeds up the process! It is about 2.5 hours long (I'm used to 4-5 hours so this is great). I would definitely recommend straight perms here if you're looking for a place to go to! My hair is kind of long and she charged me $200 for the first two times and $250 for this last one because my hair grew even longer! Awesome prices because they are usually $300-$400 for long hair. ***if you want them to focus more on your baby hair or have any special requests MAKE IT KNOWN! Loved this salon and had been here 4 times prior, but I will no longer be going back. On my most recent visit for a cut and highlights, the stylist (40-ish woman with blunt cut bangs) didn't even introduce herself or ask questions to learn about my hair or to ask how exactly I wanted my hair done. Once I sat down and said that I wanted a trim and the same type of highlights as before, she and a young guy quickly got to work tag-teaming the appointment: She would put the highlights in. He would shampoo. She would cut. He would blow dry. No one talked to me in between and I seriously felt like a dog being worked on by some unhappy groomers. Worst, I had my hair side-parted, and she assumed I always part that way (since she never spoke to me), so I have tons of highlights on my left and absolutely nothing down my true center part! The color is also really cheap looking and not warm or natural at all. I guess that's what happens when you just slap on the solution and herd someone under a blow dryer for a speedy 30 minute dye job. I wouldn't recommend this place if this quick, impersonal treatment is the new norm. It was cheap, but not worth it, since I went ahead and dyed over the crappy highlights anyway. I did ask for cooler tones and the highlights are definitely more coppery/warm, although the woman who did my hair did offer to tone them if I wanted and I chose not to. Overall a very friendly environment with a nice complimentary hand treatment while my highlights were processing. The woman who did my highlights was extremely friendly and made me feel very comfortable. Although, for the prices they charge I think the salon could use a bit of upkeep. My hair is long and thick and they told me that the $199 deal wouldn't cover my entire head of hair which was disappointing. They kept saying wow your hair is so long as if they hadn't dealt with anyone with this length or thickness before. As a customer, I don't need to hear that. I just need you to do the job. I've had the Japanese straightening done once before in Japan and it worked out really well. As I was explaining this to the stylist, she asked me "if it was done so well, why is it still curly down here at the bottom"...I was taken aback since I told her it was 4 months ago that I had done the process, and in all honesty, it wasn't as bad as my original curly hair. Not really her place to make a statement like that. Yesterday, I washed my hair for the first time, blew it out, and my hair is brittle and kinky...that's not even how my natural hair is so I'm really shocked that it turned out this way. I am honestly really confused about what happened with the process that it didn't work. I found this business with their Groupon deal. I'm generally a very easy going person and don't write reviews, but couldn't help but comment on this one. After taking off work for the appointment, I arrived to find that they no longer had me on their calendar. I will also have to add that I called and spoke to them and re-confirmed the appointment a few days prior as well, and all was still well. Apparently after that time and the time I arrived, my appointment was moved to a different day of the week and I was never notified. The receptionist let me know that they would "manage" and a lady came up and pointed me to a chair. She never introduced herself or attempted conversation, which was a first for me to see at a hair salon trying to build clientele. They had someone that seemed to be in basic training that ended up washing/combing/deep conditioning my hair. I know it was basic because a hairdresser came up at one point and gave her directions on not to brush my hair from top to bottom when its wet, but to start at the ends which reduces breakage. (common knowledge?) I do have to say the girl in training was super nice and did offer me drinks/magazine/made sure I was comfortable. I get, it that they were making up for the big price cuts they gave with the groupon, but I personally wouldn't start someone with a new client without proper training or direction. I also didn't see any kind of certification displayed in the salon. Typically each hair dresser has their graduation certificate/license displayed in their station.. and I didn't see this in any of them. The appointment was also supposed to take 60 minutes, but it ended up about an hour and a half. The cut was up to my expectations. She never asked if I liked it or if there was anything additional after she finished, so I finished trimming my bangs at home. It was a groupon deal. They asked me if I wanted it straightened - and since I was under the impression the groupon was also for a style, I said sure but then she told me it's usually an extra charge but she would do it for free. I decided to try this place because there was a deal on Yelp and it's close to my house. Luckily I was able to make an appt for the same day after my other stylist cancelled on me. However, I did have to wait about 30 minutes as they were quite busy at the time. They were pretty friendly. I brought pictures of the cut I wanted (some bangs and slightly layered, not very hard) and explained that I DID NOT want my hair to be thinned with the razor or shears because I hate that since my hair is very thin and flat already. However, the girl who cut my hair did not speak English very well and although she agreed that my hair was already thin, next thing you know, I hear that kkrreeee sound the scissors make when they are thinning your hair with it. It was too late so I just let her do her thing. The cut turned out oookkkkayyy, definitely not what I wanted but guess I can live with it. At least I didn't end up crying, I actually did that once when I went to Paul Brown. But I can't wait til my hair grows out and I can re-cut it somewhere else, hopefully to the way I want it! read more

My regular hair dresser was fully booked, so I did search via the Yelp mobile app for salons in the area. Salon Ava popped up and the reviews were great so I made an appointment. It was easy to find since it's in the Korean shopping plaza next to Don Quijote. Parking availble in the lot and the salon is upstairs in the building. The staff was friendly and greeted me right away. I "checked in" via Yelp mobile, and found that the check-in brought up a coupon for 50% off my first visit. When I asked to redeem it, the owner said they were no longer offering that special. I was a little disappointed, but she did offer a smaller discount. The salon is small, but very clean. The owner discussed what I wanted to have done with my hair. She was very patient and listened to what I had to say and wasn't pushy at all like others. She made a few suggestions, too. I did a wash, cut, and blow dry for only $35 (not including tip)! I was even more impressed that when I said I wanted to cut 5 inches of my hair, she ONLY cut 5 inches. It turns out that racial profiling is NOT the key to a good haircut. If you've ever read my Yelp reviews, you may know I've been bouncing around trying to find a new stylist for years. I haven't been "happy" with a cut in quite some time, and keep searching for the elusive holy grail of hair. Part of the problem is that fine, but thick, blond hair is such an anomaly, no one knows how to cut it. (I hear about my hair composition every time; I'm not making this up.) Thus, I end up with chunky blunt cuts that don't work with my hair, no matter how hard I try to prep the stylist upfront. I was getting desperate. Enter Salon Ava. I called because a friend had gotten a dramatically refined cut there years ago and I kept them in the back of my mind. My not-subtle assumption was that I'd end up with the same problem-cut, since a location in a Korean strip mall does not inspire confidence in the ability to cut non-Asian hair. And yet, I was wrong. I went in to clean up the last cut I'd gotten 3 weeks prior and had been unhappy with ever since. I figured it couldn't be that hard to improve an *ok* cut, so I hoped for the best. She delivered! Customer service is odd at Salon Ava, at best. Or maybe "non-communicative" is the right word. My first visit was, incidentally, the only time a stylist has removed the hair-cutting cape and abruptly walked away from the chair. No mirror to check out the back. No "that'll do it, come this way please." No "how does this look to you?" Just.... Walked away! Good thing I DID like the cut. I'm not sure there was an option. I timidly followed her to the register while waiting to be chastised for getting up without permission. A bit of guidance would have gone a long way! I've been back twice and I'd say it's been a consistent experience. I leave happy, and it's currently the only place I will go, and she even offers coffee or tea while you're there. I located the salon via yelp deals..I was excited! I went it to get a Japanese straight perm...but the first thing they said was how do you want your hair cut? I said cut noone said I would have to cut my hair...I hate to cut my hair! I had a friend with me..who ended up staying for the whole process to make sure I didn't go into a melt down! They did a beautiful job..my hair looks great. I wish they would have explained what they were doing ..the last part of the process was scary..they put on this collar type basin thing. I will never go back to this place. I went there to do color and cut. I told the lady who did my hair that I just want her to trim it but she took off too much and just by looking at how she cut my hair. She was like cutting a doll hair like she doesn't care how its gonna turn out. And after the color and cut, I expected her to use the blow dry but she used straightening iron? When I went there, I haven't trim my hair for soooo long and there was so much split ends and I was a little scared that I might end up paying too much and not happy so I went there cause of their yelp deal. When I walked out, I wish that I went to a better place and pay double the amount I paid at Salon Ava. Usually, I end up paying more at some trendy place for some dumb girl to screw up my hair. Not this time. I bought the yelp gift certificate, and scheduled an appointment for the next day. I showed up early, and they took me right away. The shampoo and conditioner were really nice, and the staff was very welcoming. I have thick, long hair, which has frustrated some of my previous hairdressers. Here, Yong gave me exactly what I asked for, and the cut was great and very even. She was quick, but at the same time, she was very thorough. She layered nicely, and didn't cut off more than I had asked. The place is upstairs in a little shopping center, kind of tucked away. I am totally going back for my next hair cut. Glad I finally found a new hair salon. read more

I went in not know what I wanted to do with my hair, thanks to being super indecisive, and after speaking with the owner for a little bit I decided to put my faith in her skills and she did not disappoint. My hair was super damaged from the last time I colored it but she worked her magic and it turned out spectacularly! If you're thinking about doing something different with your hair Salon Ava is the place to go, everyone is so friendly even if they're not the most talkative and the environment is relaxing. I was very happy with the Japanese straight perm I got for $199! I've done a straight perm 3 times before but Salon Ava has definitely done it the BEST! Every other place was like $350+. This is the only place I go to get my hair done. I get my hair cut here a lot, and I color my hair too. I got a perm here a couple months ago, and I absolutely love it. This place is a definite must. The owner and workers here are Korean, but they speak English too. :) read more
