I had been bouncing around to multiple salons and stylists since living in the city and hadn't been able to find someone I liked well enough to stick with until finding Jacob. Luciano is your MAN for a balayage! Pictures show two different haircuts / colors. The first darker hair pictures are from my first balayage with Luciano. I didn't need to come back for an entire year because it grew out so naturally and nicely. As my hair grew the cut maintained it's shape and the color held true. On the next side I went brighter and blonder after a little nudge from Luciano, and once again I was super happy with the result. I told him I was going for a beachy look and he NAILED IT. I've had long, waist length hair for years that I prided myself on, but due to the pandemic I didn't get a haircut for 18 months and stopped taking care of my hair so it got pretty damaged. I decided to big chop on impulse and got an appointment with Jacob for the next day. I found photos of looks I liked but they all looked pretty high maintenance AKA blow dry, curling, and hairspray which wouldn't work for me anymore! So I came with some concepts but got Jacob's guidance on what would work with my newfound low maintenance approach to hair. I have fine, wavy hair so I'm scared of layers because of past experience where other hairstylists thinned my hair but Jacob gave me great advice on the right length and layers, to create look that would be effortless. He also told me to use a clarifying shampoo because of build up he noticed in my hair. I feel bouncy, happy and cute as a button with my new look - it's great to have a change! read more

Gawd, it feels so great to be back in the Castro. This is where hair should be done. Getting highlights and color can take hours, so if you're going to spend that much time, you might as well do it at a place that you love. Jeremy is an expert in color and cut. He transforms my black Asian hair into a lux natural blonde in the summer, to brilliant bronze brunette in the winter. I love that he does such a multi faceted highlights in natural blonde tones, and lush brown undertones. I don't get that orange or red brassiness that you can get if your stylist doesn't know what they're doing. He's always honest with me on how light or dark we can go in a session. When you've been coloring your hair for as long as I have, you really need to make sure that you're in good hands so they don't damage your hair. The salon is located across from the Safeway in the Castro. They have a little garden in the back that you can chill while your hair is processing. Staff all have great energy and it makes the time go by so much faster when everyone is laughing and having fun. read more

This is a review for Luciano and a hair color toner service, which was great. Salon Baobao has been around for 10+ years. I realized last minute that my highlights from many months ago (from a different salon) had turned quite orange, and it was time for a refresh. Luciano was able to squeeze me in last minute on a busy weekend. We did the consultation over text where I sent him clear photos in sunlight. What I wanted was pretty straightforward: please tone my hair down overall--remove the orange brassiness and ok to overall darken my hair color. He was able to do all that in just an hour. He didn't have time to do a blowout at the end, but that's OK because he was up front about it. I signed up on the waitlist on their website and linked through their Vagaro booking site. I left my phone # and got a text from Luciano who happened to have availability within 2-3 days of when I submitted my info! I showed up a little bit early for my appointment (please be respectful of other people's time and GET HERE TO YOUR APPTS ON TIME!). The salon takes credit/touch pay and prefers cash for tip, but will take tip in credit in their system if you really must. Location is conveniently across the street from Safeway, on the same block as Whole Foods. There's neighborhood street parking if you're patient and budget enough time to walk. There's also metered parking along Market St. in front of the salon. Also, you can take the classic F muni above-ground train (Castro-Fisherman's Wharf) which stops at Church and Duboce. Either stop will take you closest to this salon. The J muni at Church will also get you here pretty conveniently. read more

I'd been really excited to get my hair cut since it had been almost two years since the last time I got it cut, but I ended up with the choppiest look I've ever had and it was pretty disappointing for the price. I had originally wanted a v cut style but Jacob advised against it because they don't grow out nicely, and so I just asked him to trim the dead ends off, try to maintain some length, and to try not to make it look choppy. He was super nice and my hair definitely feels healthier now with the dead ends gone, but this is possibly the choppiest haircut I've ever gotten in my life and it makes me want to just get a lob to even it out. I didn't want to say anything at the end of the cut because he'd already spent so much time cutting and styling, but I almost wish I did because $70 for a haircut is not cheap. Overall, 3/5 because the salon was clean, they took covid precautions seriously, and Jacob was nice, but if he asks you if you want face-framing, say no!! read more

I wanted a simple, short blunt haircut but the haircut was choppy and uneven. The edges of my hair are all jagged. I wanted to get tips of my hair colored purple with a fade up but got a horrible color job. There are parts that are not bleached at all (which should be colored) and parts that are only bleached and have no color. This is definitely the worst haircut I've ever gotten. Had the absolute best haircut done here by Jacob! I hadn't gotten a haircut in over 2 years (yikes, I know). I used to color my hair a lot and after going completely blonde (my natural hair color is brown) my hair was super damaged. I decided to grow it out until most of the damage was at a reasonable length to cut off (I tend to look/feel good with a longer hair length). After reading the reviews I decided to make an appointment w/ Jacob and he did not disappoint! I let him know I was quite nervous with how much I'd have to chop off due to the damage and he was very honest with me + gave me his recommendation. He was very meticulous and did a wonderful job - my hair has the perfect amount of layers + volume. I've gotten so many compliments about my hair and I couldn't be happier with the end result. I discovered Salon Baobao a year ago after searching for a new salon in SF. I was able to easily make an appointment through their website booking system Vagaro. Prices are comparable to other salons in the city. I selected Jacob as my stylist after reading various positive reviews. I come in monthly for a root touch up and have been coming to Jacob for over a year now. I've shared that I want to lighten my dark brown hair and he recommended highlights to start and partial highlights to touch up. He is knowledgeable and always ready to recommend what will look good on his clients (for example when I need toner, time to touch up the highlights, what products will help strengthen my hair, etc.). I always get my hair styled after coloring and leave feeling like a new person. Jacob is my go-to stylist, and I can't recommend him enough! read more

Quote over the phone: $40-$75 Charged: $85 plus tips n Uber (Note: Stylebee would go to your home for $85) In the salon: I said anything simple n soft.. not low bun.. don't want the bun to fall down while I am dancing. (It's just a private school gala.. not my wedding.. not picky at all) Results: I SMELL like hairspray. My bangs look like a piece of paper n very plastic due to tons of hair spray. I got my face hair-sprayed, so my left eye is red now. Hair pins are very visible on the back of my head. Now: let's see if my hair will fall off tonight when I am dancing. I got my hair done by Don (also goes by Duc), a cut from long hair to a shoulder length bob. He did a fantastic job recommending a cut to suit my face after I showed him a few Pinterest photos of what I liked. Hair washing is always my favorite parts-- it's super comfortable and all the products they use smell really, exceptionally nice. Small detail but it matters! Don was so meticulous with his cutting and, unlike most trips to the hair stylist, DIDNT CUT OFF MORE THAN WHAT I WANTED! NOT EVEN WHEN HE LAYERED MY HAIR! He blew out my hair and the threw in a free hair curling session right after. I'm really pleased with my experience here and am waiting to see how my hair looks after first day gleefulness. I found the salon on Yelp and decided the strong reviews meant it was worth checking out since I was in dire need of a haircut. Thankfully, the salon is also conveniently located one block away from the N line! I was also able to make an appointment online through their scheduling portal and was able to book an appointment for the day after - perfect for any last minute planners! I had Don as my hair stylist. I found him to be very careful and thorough with not only the cut, but also the blowdry. He also listened to exactly what I wanted with my hair and my bangs. I loved the way he did my bangs in particular because they were starting to become a headache, but he was able to make them a bit lighter and the perfect length! Prices are $70 for a female haircut, without tips. This may seem hefty for many, but for someone just moving back from NYC, this was just another normal haircut for me. I'm going to continue to explore cheaper options, but if I can't find anything I love, this will be the salon for me! read more

I was very excited when I found this salon on yelp as the pictures and reviews looked pretty nice. My first appointment was canceled when I was on my way only 5 min away from the salon. I rescheduled my appointment and had haircut by Jacob. He is really nice but I don't think the haircut was what I asked for. I asked for long layer haircuts, with lots of layers and some length maintained. But the cut was much shorter than I expected and it turned out very choppy, with lots of very short and uneven layers. The layers don't blend at all. It makes it extremely difficult to stylish and doesn't look good at all regardless whether you curl or straighten it. Actually because of the short and choppy layers, it makes it impossible to curl it. It's a big disappointment and definitely doesn't worth the $75 before tips price tag. read more
