I have a very long and thick hair, and I haven't been able to find a good hairdresser that would listen to what I want and just give me a TRIM, in a long time. After doing a LOT of research, I came across this salon on Yelp and after having read a lot of good reviews, I decided to finally get a trim!! I called the salon at around noon yesterday, and Kevin was able to squeeze me in for a trim at 1:15pm on the same day. I was able to easily find the salon and actually walk to it since it's right by where I work. I was greeted by Shelby, right as I walked in, and she took a moment to kindly and patiently listen to what I wanted, and 20 min. later, she gave me the BEST trim and layers without changing the length of my hair! And I LOVE IT!! I was so happy that I decided to get a hair color touch up on the same day, and since Shelby was busy, Donna colored my hair.., and she also did a FABULOUS job!!! I love that all of the hairdressers work as a team and you can tell that they enjoy what they do and take their time in giving you the best possible results!! I used to love Salon Skanda - now I would NEVER recommend to anyone - the owner is horrible! Called to make an appointment with Josh for my regular haircut and color. The owner answered (I didn't know he was the owner at the time). Conversation went like this: Me: Hi, I'd like to make an appointment with Josh Owner: Josh isn't here anymore, he quit two weeks ago. Would you like to make an appointment with (forget his name)? Me: Oh, ok, no thank you. Did Josh move to another salon? Owner: He did. Me: Can you tell me where he went? Owner: I can't. Me: Josh was the only person who I've found in Atlanta who could give me a haircut I liked! I have really thick hair and constantly had to switch stylists for almost 5 years before I found him, I'd really like to find him Owner: You can find him on facebook... Me: I don't know his last name...? Owner: I don't know what to tell you Me: Could you tell me his last name? Owner: I can't. Me: Ok... Is Cheryl there? I've now been to Salon Skanda 3 times (hair cuts & dyes) and have really grown to love it. I'm rather particular about my hair cuts-- I have really thick, fine hair-- and I have been to big name salons around Atlanta only to find that no matter the price point there are hair dressers who just follow a formula and cut my hair incorrectly. Gwen though is meticulous-- she asks questions and cuts it to suit what I've noticed since my last cut. Furthermore, she's a great teacher-- no one has ever taken the time to help me understand better how to get the right curl, get my hair to lay straighter, etc. She's just extremely patient and thorough with her instructions-- love that. As proof of that the compliments on the cut are HUGE the day after the salon visit, but they continue after because Gwen has taken the time to teach me how to style it just right. The key with any stylist is communication. If I'm not telling her how I want to style it-- she can't be expected to know how to help me. The service of the salon go beyond my favorite stylist though-- each time I'm in EVERY person is conversational, thoughtful and professional. Just got my hair did and I'm quite pleased. KIA was awesome and very sweet, she offered great advice as to the hair color that would look great on me. I purchased a $165 voucher for $75 on Half depot and used this to get a color, cut and style. Used the voucher to pay without any problems or upsell or extra costs. went here today and used the 50% of first client yelp deal. the salon, as you can tell from the photos, has modern decor and is very clean. the receptionist, brian, is very courteous over the phone and also offers you a beverage of your choice when you walk in. i arrived a little early for my appointment with heather, and it appeared that i was scheduled into the middle of another client's hair color processing time. i think because of this scheduling, my appointment began late, and i felt heather rushed through the cut so she could get to her other client. the result of the cut isn't bad, i got compliments on it from a few people after, but i think the process (got smacked in the face a couple times with my own wet hair while she was combing it out to cut / directed the hair dryer at one spot on my scalp a little too long for comfort while she was adjusting something) and the style itself could have been closer to what i'd wanted had heather had more time. my total was $25 + tip. in summary: great clean salon, overall friendly staff. i would definitely still give this place another shot and hope i'm not scheduled in the middle of someone else's appointment. read more

Update AGAIN - 2/11/2011 - The Salon had their opening party and I was fortunate enough to be able to join them for the big event. The uber chic were in attendance and turned out to be super nice and a lot of fun as well. Heather made a point of asking me to have my friend she had to previously cancel on, call her so she can make things up with a special service just for her. There were hair models, and chair massages, and I got to meet Richard, the newest hair stylist, and the artist who did the paintings in the salon was there too, and the incredible artwork is actually available for sale! Another great thing was both the friend I brought to the opening and myself won gift certificates for future services! Nice! Just keep gettng more impressed with this place every time I am there. Update on this Salon - Incredible Customer Service continues! I stopped in today to get a few more referral cards for Heather since I had given all mine out already t the folks who had commented on my awesome new haircut/style and "whatever you have done to your hair I love it" friends. Anyway, Heather was not there so I couldn't tell her that I did have one friend that was disappointed when Heather had to cancel on her the day of her 1st appointment and she was now hesitant to come see her, so there is the only negative I can say, but we all have things happen in life. I've been with Richard for a while now - simply, he gets me and I trust him. I want to look professional, but keep an edgy feel. I followed him from another place and LOVE LOVE LOVE the vibe of Salon Skanda from the minute I walked thru the door. It immediately brought me back home -NY Soho-esque type of place. Let me start by saying I have never written a review for a salon before but I loved my stylist so much I just had to. I hadn't gotten a haircut since I had moved to Atlanta 7 months prior, so I was in desperate need of one. A friend of mine told me about this place and had a $20 off coupon for referring, so I booked an appointment. The salon itself was very nice, modern but eclectic and funky. The staff was super friendly and everyone who worked there was young and well put together, which is definitely a good sign at a salon. My stylist was Shannel and she was amazing! I have super curly thick hair that a lot of stylists don't know how to handle. I have very long hair and my goal was to keep as much of the length as possible while still getting rid of the dead ends (which there were a lot of!) and to freshen up my layers. She gave a great consultation and really made sure she knew what I wanted and what would work for me. Because my hair was so dead she had to chop off more than I originally intended but she always ran what she was doing by me first to make sure it was ok. She finished my cut and styled it and I couldn't believe how amazing it looked!!! It felt soooo much healthier and looked awesome! I don't think I've ever left a salon so happy. I grew my natural color out for three years and worked on getting it to its healthiest condition just to make sure I would have the best looking color possible! Salon Skanda came highly recommended and I drove 2.5 hours and spent $300 to get balayage, so this was a big investment for me and I was really excited! Though I brought pictures and discussed with the stylist, somewhere there was a miscommunication and I ended up with golden tones which is exactly what I wanted to avoid. I asked to tone it again but it barely made a difference and I left so disappointed wishing I could've gone back in time (first photos attached-- ignore me dramatically crying in my car lol). The person who recommended the salon to me pushed me to return to them, so they fit me in the next day and they fixed it perfectly for free. Now I have beautiful, subtle, balayage with no yellow in sight! They even called me a few days later to make sure I was happy. They were very sweet about the whole experience and didn't make me feel like I was being difficult or demanding. Shelby is amazing. I'm very picky as to who does my hair and after an awful bleach job years ago I haven't had it dyed since. I told her what I wanted, a balayage, and explained that I was anxious about bleaching it to a colour that didn't compliment skin tone. We went through some pictures on her Pinterest and found similar ideas to what I wanted. She explained what she wanted to do and told me the cost upfront. I love that there are no hidden upcharges to surprise you at the end! What I walked away with is a colour that is so beautiful it completely changed my face shape and brought out my hazel eyes. I'll be back in 2 weeks for a keratin treatment and I'm honestly excited to see what the final look will be! I can't wait to head out on vacation looking, and feeling, a million dollars! I visited Salon Skanda recently to get ombre highlights put into my hair, since I always like to be slightly late on trends. I was warned on the phone that it was kind of hard to find and was given directions, but I found it fairly straightforward and breezed in to the salon a bit early. I was given a form to fill out about my hair and haircare routine, but it didn't seem like anyone really read it since it was never discussed with me - then again, my answers were pretty straightforward and boring. Heather was my stylist, and needed very little direction once I told her what I wanted. That is something I really value in a stylist - I want them to value my opinion and what I want, but I don't want to feel like I'm coaching them through the appointment. Heather needed no such handholding, and I ended up with gorgeous ombre highlights that I am totally in love with. My one concern with the appointment was the time it took - I expected it to take awhile, and that's fine, but it felt a little longer since Heather was so busy during all my waiting times. She would check on me occasionally, but I really would have liked slightly more communication about what was going on and the times I would be waiting and that she would be busy during those times. This is really only a minor complaint though. I used a 25% off deal that I found online, and I found the price with that coupon to be completely reasonable for the services that I got. When I said I wanted to add a tip on to my charge on my card, they automatically added $10 dollars. I found that a little strange, since I definitely would have left a bit more than that! I came in with curly hair to my lower back and asked for a devacut with a no poo transformation. I spoke to naijah about what I wanted and we talked about a small trim. She told me she would only cut 1 and 1/2 inches. I told her the most I wanted to cut was to my mid back. She agreed and as she was cutting I told her I had a tender head but she was brushing through my curly hair with her fingers through all the knots and if her fingers wouldn't go through she would just cut out the knots. After my hair cut I looked in the mirror and it looked like she had cut it at least 6 inches. Although it was healthier, i didn't agree to cutting off all my ends that kevin called "stringy" over the phone. I wanted to cut my hair slowly so i would not have such a drastic change. She told me to wait until after styling because it would look nicer. My hair that I had grown out for years was now just barely past my shoulders. I called asking for a refund and kevin was very rude and uncooperative stating that I was not able to receive a refund and he could only give me credit after I repeatedly stated I would not be coming back to a salon that did not listen to me. This salon was a waste of the $100 haircut service I asked for. Definitely do not recommend Salon Skanda for curly hair. Please look at attached photos for the before and after. To the owners response- Anybody's hair will look healthier if you cut half of the length away. I did not agree to have my hair so short. A hairdresser should not do what they think will make their clients hair better in their eyes. It was my decision as to how much I wanted to take off and not Naijahs or Kevin's. Why is everybody hating on this place? Anyway, I went a few weeks ago and had a really great experience here. I saw Stevie, who is one of the younger stylists, but she did a fabulous job on my hair. I am a single-mom and recently divorced so I wanted a sassy new haircut...which she gave me and I totally love it!! So I am going to see her again next week and I can't wait. This was the best salon experience that I've had in years so I totally recommend them!! Yes, the place is in an office building but I think that is practical. They are right in Buckhead so the physical location can't be better and the salon has a hip-modern vibe which I like. As a first time customer, I called to check on the pricing for the two services I wanted: a hair cut and a partial highlight. I was also going to be getting 50% off the color with the Yelp discount, so I was happy about the price - almost a cheap as getting one service done at my old salon. I had been eschewing a hair cut for at my old salon for at least a year due to cost, so I was excited to be getting both a color AND a cut at Salon Skanda. Richard did a fabulous job on the color and Heather did a fabulous job on the cut. However, BEWARE OF EXTRA CHARGES. I told Richard that I wanted blonde highlights, but gave him free reign on the tones/shades to use. After foiling me up, he decided to add a double glaze. Well, I have never had a "glaze" before, so I had no idea that the charge was extra - until later when I got ready to pay! To top it off, he had done a double glaze, so it was TWICE the cost (an extra $46 total!!!!). In addition, during the shampoo process, he asked if I wanted a deep conditioning treatment. I asked if that cost extra (this was before I was even aware of the extra $46 charge), and he said it was an additional $20, so I said no. So any time they do ANYTHING to your hair or ask if you want this or that, you better ASK if it is additional, because it probably will be. I do believe in my hair looking nice, and I generally believe that you "get what you pay for", but I also don't think it is unreasonable to be concerned about the price of something, esp. when you have budgeted for a certain amount and then you go to pay and find out it's $46 more (essentially negating the 50% discount I was getting as a first-time customer.) While I don't believe this was an intentional scam, I would have APPRECIATED the stylist going over the list of things he was going to be doing to my hair and making sure I understood that I would be incurring additional costs and GETTING MY PERMISSION to continue with not one, but TWO glazes. At the counter, Kevin, the owner, informed me of my $46 overcharge and I was dumbfounded. I told him that I didn't know I had received two glazes (I knew I had received one) but I certainly didn't know that either one was EXTRA. I gave him a brief explanation of my interaction with the stylist and he said "well, how about I meet you HALFWAY and only charge you for ONE of the glazes?" Well, that was still $23 more than I had planned for, but not wanting to make a scene, I paid it. However, on the way home, I continued to get angry as I thought about it - it was THEIR mistake, not mine - yet I'm still supposed to pay for half of the extra charges? Uh-uh. He should have taken the whole extra charge off the bill right then and there. So I called him back and he said that he would go ahead and take off the other $23, thus subtracting the cost of BOTH unasked-for glazes (in other words, he finally did the right thing.) But, I had to drive back over there after work 2 days later and write a new check. This time, when I went in, Kevin didn't even look at me or say hello (he was working on a client, but still - I thought it was rude.) He just said - "You can pay Amber over there" and directed me over to the counter. Then he went to the back and got my old check and brought it up front. No further acknowledgement, then back to his client. I got the rest of my overcharge refunded and left, but I was disappointed. Despite this whole mess, I really think the cut and color looks great and had not written off the salon completely. However, I guess Kevin assumed that I had, so he felt no need to be polite to me. If I do decide to go back I will certainly be sure to confirm all charges on all procedures before those procedures are performed. I'm not necessarliy going to cheap-out if a full highlight is needed vs. a partial; however, I do not like other people spending my money without consulting me first! read more

To begin, I set an appointment 1 week in advance only to get a phone call the afternoon of my appointment saying the stylist was running about 15 minutes late. I get there only to wait about 30 minutes after the time I was told to arrive to have someone actually wash my hair. I finally get to sit down with Gwen and go over options. I said I wanted to clean it up a bit and have something simple that wouldn't be difficult to manage. The appointment was also supposed to include a deep-conditioning treatment. Supposed to as I was in and out of the chair in 30 minutes. For someone with long hair this was the quickest appointment I have ever had. The "style" part of the appointment was nothing a super clips couldn't have done. I felt like I wasted my money and time and would not recommend to anyone. I really like this place!! I went for my first time to get a haircut by Heather last week. She did a fabulous job and I received compliments all week on my new haircut. I've also seen several of her color jobs (some of my coworkers have gone to see her as well) and they are amazing!! Pretty much as good as it gets. I'm pretty picky when it comes to my hair, and have yet to pledge any loyalty to a stylist but Heather can do my hair any time she wants. It is a new salon, just recently opened and conveniently located right across the BP on Piedmont & Pharr Rd. I tried this salon in May through a Groupon I had purchased. The atmosphere of the salon is very cozy. I was immediately greeted and offered a beverage as I walked in. I had a keratin treatment, partial highlights and a cut. My appointment was at 5:30pm and was there until 9pm because of all the services I had done. I'm sure Heather was tired and ready to go home at the end but I did not feel that she was rushing to finish. She made me look like a million bucks. Even a retired hairstylist friend of mine mentioned how skilled Heather must be because the blonde highlights she gave my dark brown hair are just the right tone, not brassy or orange. Gwen's been cutting my hair for over a year, without any issues. She has a keen sense for understanding the style I want and what will work with my hair type, face structure, and my normal styling habits. So, she knows better than I what will work for me in the long term. Thank goodness!! That is why she is the stylist and I stick to my day job!! I also work in a client-driven environment. When my client appointments take longer than expected, it is obviously going to affect my appointments for the rest of the day. I went for my first visit yesterday and was a nervous wreck waiting for my appointment! I have been in search of a new stylist who can do it all - cut and color. It's been tough to find someone who can do both, isn't always running late, doesn't keep me for 4 hours and someone who I can easily get appointments with. It really seemed impossible. I made an appointment with Heather after much stalking and Googling. I work full time, so I need evening appointments which are hard to come by it seems. But thus salon offers late hours on certain days of the week - perfect! I arrived just a few minutes before my appointment time and was immediately taken back and offered something to drink - when wine was an option I wanted to hug the guy. Heather did a fantastic job on both my cut and color - I didn't want anything drastic, just a simple trim and highlights for my blonde hair. She didn't try to take creative liberties and gave me exactly what I asked for. I also must mention, for a cut AND a color, I was in and out in just under 2 hours! That was such a blessing to me - Heather was on time, and didn't take up too much of mine. I very much appreciated it. The salon is in the heart of Buckhead - there's a parking garage where you can park for free (another bonus). My first experience was exceptional - not to mention it didn't break my bank. Shannel listens carefully to her client's requests, and spends a lot of time and care. They use a specific brand of coloring (Goldwell) that my wife prefers that is not easy to find. When I returned, I called the salon, but was told my stylist was not available until the following week. I then sent an email to Kevin, the salon owner, explaining my situation. Kevin immediately contacted me and asked if I could come in that night or the next? He would ensure I would be placed with a Senior stylist, at no charge of course, for the fix up. I went in that night, Heather did a wonderful job, and I will certainly return. While I was there, Kevin came over, introduced himself, and thanked me for giving them the opportunity to do the touch up. Providing services to clients is a very easy thing for businesses to do.
