I got my first Perm done by Steve at SalonHQZinc, I am really impressed and happy with the results! Steve was very professional, he was detailed in styling and explaining the whole perm process to make sure it is done right and safe for my hair. In addition steve pays alot of attention to my reference pics to insure matching the exact hairstyle that I wanted!^^ Overall people working there are all very friendly and excellent service!^^

I saw Kevin almost a year ago, and he did amazing job with the haircut and highlights. He was very patient doing all the work in one day, because I was flying in to NY for a work meeting. Honestly I wasn't quite ready with having colored hair and so the long delay posting. I had asked for a redish tone and Kevin did a wonderful job. He gave me long bangs but also keep the top shorter. That made it easy for my hair to have lift without it feeling too flat on top. The long layers were easy to maintain at home and I can't wait to see Kevin again

5/5 stars, no doubt!! I came across Kevin's work after my friend had gotten her hair done by him. I was immediately drawn because I know Asian hair can be so hard to work with (unfortunately from personal experiences) and her hair looked stunning. Upon messaging Kevin, he was super kind and open to giving me a consultation regarding my hair and where my expectations should sit at. We proceeded to then make an appointment! Today I had came in to get my hair highlighted--one of the pictures that I've attached was my inspiration pic. Again, we confirmed what is achievable for my hair and what to expect. The process took nearly 7 hours, but it was so worth it! Kevin was very precise and meticulous about the cut. This is literally my dream haircut and I never thought it was achievable on my fine hair. The highlighting took up majority of the appointment! At first, it came out too brassy, but even before I could say anything, Kevin noticed it too. Kevin and his assistant immediately started toning it one more time, even though we were already 6 hours in!! The anxiety in me instantly was alleviated, and I overall just appreciate how much attention the team at this salon puts into all of their styling. One of the ladies working there alongside Kevin was so sweet as well. They kept checking in to make sure I liked what I saw, that I was hydrated, that I was fed! What a great experience. I left absolutely LOVING my hair!! 10/10 would recommend Kevin.

ASK FOR KEVIN!! First time ever bleaching my hair and Kevin made the experience so easy. We had a a small consultation of basically what I was looking to get and he recommended me some steps to take (like root shadowing so i don't damage my scalp). Warning: this is a true story about a hairstylist, Emily, saving one's confidence. Once upon a time, my heart was broken by a hair stylist I used to visit. My loyalty to him completely shattered when I walked out of the salon literally sobbing; he somehow melted half of my hair with bleach and had to cut off 8-9inches of dead hair. We all know how much a hair style can up&down one's self-esteem, amirightt?! Long story short, ... I met Emily. And my hair now looks like this ( just look at that transformation) At the time, half of my hair was bleached and colored with brassy yellow/orange, and the other half colored with brown. This could be an issue when it comes down to double-triple processing dye jobs. Emily really hustled my hair to its core. She acknowledged the health status of my hair. She paid closer attention to my hair over 6 hour course than any of my shitty exes ever have. She educated me on how to take care of my hair. She made sure I was comfortable with every process that was going on by explaining patiently. She even worked with my schedule and came in to the salon on her off day. Now, I don't know about you but a hair stylist who cares for the well being of clients' hair in genuineness is a big big catch. A lot of salons out here in NY, trying to just kiss your a** and do whatever to grab every penny they can. It's only natural to feel some type of way for those who truly take care of their clients. If you don't come here to get yourself a hair transformation, then idk why you are even looking ...

By far my best experience ... 6hrs later.... 3 stages of color lifting, balayage coloring, color treatment and light trim. Love the chunks of balayage blues & purple. Unfortunately I was in a hurry catching my Milonga. Steve, the stylist, offer ask me to go back for a 2nd visit for a complimentary color conditioning and darken the ash grey a bit for a perfect look. He is such a perfectionist. I am super satisfied with the service, the friendly atmosphere and the super skillful color technician Kama at Sk + My Chair. Steve treated my hair with care and make sure each chemical treatment cause minimal damage to my hair. 6 hours well spent ;P Highly recommended

I highly recommend Steve Kong! As an active performer I need to be up to date with my looks and hairstyle and he definitely makes me look good at all times! Very nice and professional hairstylist. I've been going to see Steve for a few years now and I've never had any complaints. I'm pretty particular on how I like my hair to be cut and styled and no matter what kind of cut I'm looking for, he knows how to work my hair every time. Also I went to him for a blowout for a wedding and my curls stayed for the entire time (and I have super straight Asian hair which always uncurls when try to attempt it at home!) read more

Already referred Steve to a couple of my friends, he's been my only stylist since I moved here. He's very knowledgable and can tell you how to take care of your hair, what to do/not to do. So ask him all the hair questions! Does an amazing job in figuring out a haircut that's right for you while listening to what you want to get done. Steve and Kama rescued my hair color! I got a bayalage highlight from another salon about a month ago but the color was a bit too orangey for me. Steve and Kama touched up my roots with medium brown, gave me more highlights on the sides that were too dark and darker highlights on the back with a spot that was too light (overall to add dimension and even out my entire hair color for a more consistent bayalage look). They also explained the process to me thoroughly and made me feel comfortable about trying a new salon. Very friendly and great service. Overall I had a very good experience for the first visit. I'm happy with my hair color now and I would highly recommend it. read more

Kama gave my daughter an amazing haircut! My daughter wanted to cut off her long her to a shoulder length cut and was nervous about it. Kama was fun and friendly and made her feel confident. She gave her a great, stylish haircut and then they had fin styling my daughter's hair with soft beach waves. Kama took so much time and care and her haircut looks great. I rarely write any review for services. But OMG, I have to recommend the stylist I had that did my makeup and hair, her name is Kama. I was modeling for a photo shooting couples weeks ago and Kama did both smoky eyes edgy looking and natural looking makeups. Both are great! The photo came out nice. She also gave me some great makeup technique tips while doing my makeup and tips on how to take care of my hair. While most of the other stylist just keep the secrets and techniques to themselves. Very professional stylist. Highly recommended her, Kama. read more

I have been going to Steve since he was at Hair Quarter. And I live in NJ. He does a great job! I have thin hair and get digital perms about twice a year. It's a nice natural wave and doesn't damage your hair. Steve does it really well!! I also bring my teenage kids and he does such a great job. So I almost don't want to write a review because I don't want to make it impossible to get an appointment here. :) This place was nothing short of amazing. I went here to have my hair dyed. Steve was thorough and patient in talking through what I wanted and explaining what he was going to do. He even explained and wrote down what I should buy so that I could do my touch ups at home. I left with my hair looking great, and I paid less than I would at most other salons. Looks like I found my new colorist! read more

While disappointing results can sometimes happen, what bothered me most was the complete lack of communication afterward. I reached out to Masaki on May 13 regarding my concerns and attempted to resolve the issue privately. I never received a response. It has now been about a month, and despite giving plenty of time for a reply, I have been ignored. I did not immediately leave reviews or make public comments because I wanted to give him the opportunity to address the situation directly. Unfortunately, that opportunity was never taken. For $480, I expected a higher standard of work and customer service. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Masaki.

Updating my review: I used to come here because the haircuts were strong, but over time the…read moreexperience deteriorated significantly. Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Updating this with a pic and additional NYC HAIR SALON SEO terms so future customers are warned since the salon has decided to block me after no satisfactory resolution. The pic at the top right was me pre-hair f*** up. Only come to this salon if you'd like to come home and cry.

This was their "best advice for me" and that I should come back and get both together. I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and find a salon that can do a nice cut for long AND SHORT hair. WITHOUT A PERM TO MAKE IT ALL STRAIGHT FIRST. The skill level here is just so sub par. I haven't cut my hair in 6 months and I have really long straight natural hair so you can say it is a blank canvas. This is probably one of the worst haircut I have gotten in years compared to other places that are in different price ranges. Leaving the salon it looked good styled but when I went home to wash it and had more time to look without it curled I saw really choppy layers and the length is much shorter than i wanted. For a cut I paid $107-110 not including tips and expected a decent cut for that amount. Truly disappointing as holidays are coming up and I have been wearing a hat to cover up, cannot wait for this to grow out but will take months. Ara was really sweet and nice but I don't think the skills were there.

I was really unhappy with my hair that I went to get a hair treatment (for the dry, damaged hair) and toner at a different salon a week later. That stylist even asked "who did your hair?"

I have been to well known salons in the city and I always felt disappointed because of the lack of skill and attention...as well as zero knowledge of Asian hair. what I like about this studio is that the hair stylist is experienced and knows what he's doing. I managed to get an appointment the same day as we made the call, and that's really cool I think because I don't like waiting for too long. The salon had a really nice atmosphere and the personnel treated me really well. While some people are scared of going to the doctor or the dentist I am scared cutting my hair. Steve managed to take all my worries away at this point, because he gave me probably the nicest and coolest hairstyle I've ever had. He did the job quick and efficiently, while also providing me with a lot of great tips on how to take good care of my hair in the future. This is my first time at Steve's new location and it is a lot bigger than his last place. It is more open with higher ceilings, making the vibe more free, modern, and cleaner. I saw him for cut and color. I had a lighter, more ashier balayage from my last visit, and I wanted something closer to my hair color that still gave it dimension. He was super patient in choosing the right color with me. He and Lou worked on coloring my hair and walked me through the entire process so that I wasn't confused about the color that I was getting, and what was happening at each step. Problem is it's still not the look I wanted. I didn't notice this until after the phone call: 1. The right side does not match the left side. Left side color starts close to the roots whereas right side starts further down (closer to what I wanted). 2. Poor blending on both sides. It's blended in the front but not throughout. Stylist even admitted on the phone they intentionally made the back more chunky saying it's okay because your hair covers it so you cannot see it?! I don't know about you but paying $380, I expect my entire head to be blended evenly. Also it would have been nice to know this up front. Higher price than I expected being in Chinatown. I'm visiting from Chicago. Not sure if it's all of NYC or just this establishment but 70% of the color application was done by a color assistant not the stylist. And there's expectation that you tip both the stylist and assistants. With that I ended up paying more than I would've in Chicago. I've had hair cut and perm with other stylists at the salon. Those turned out good. Do not recommend for hair coloring.

He even broke down which photos were more about styling versus the cut itself, which made such a difference in aligning expectations. The cut itself was incredibly meticulous. Suguru walked me through what he did and why, explaining how each section would fall and how it would grow out over time. You can tell he's cares about his work. I left with a cut that looks like what I wanted but still works with minimal styling (which is great for me).
