Tough to review just a quick stop by the slice. I heard Sal's outdoes everyone else in this part of Westchester, so I accompanied my pizza fiend - oops, friend - down to Mamaroneck to check them out. And this is a place worth checking out. Old-school vibe inside, not at all like the new-wave joints around. You can tell Sal's has been here for generations, which means they do it right. You walk in, there's a pizza counter to the left, a few tables to the right, some more in the back... and a hidden whole other room! So there will be room for you to enjoy your meal. This review is divided for now. My friend got cheese slices. They're big, thin, covered just right in cheese - win. Crust just the right toasty to hold the slice up. Classic NY pizza we got here - everyone in Fairfield County should visit. I peeked over at the other table and they had Sicilian slices that also look legit, if that's your thing. Plenty of cheese, soft crust, all that. Then there's my side. I had looked at the BBQ place next door and decided "nah, too contrived", so when I discovered the neat-looking slices on their platter were BBQ chicken, I went for them. Well, they actually didn't come out that hot. The thickness of the meat probably got in the way. Then there's the fact they were white slices (since BBQ sauce gets in the way of tomato sauce), but not hepped up with ricotta or other white cheese inside. I'd make those suggestions for improvement. There are also some other bizarre slices on offer - they're not afraid of variety! I'd steer clear of the salad pizza though. So based on just the one visit and everything I saw and tasted - 4 stars. I would want to get a whole pie next time for a fresh-baked experience, see how quickly that goes and if it's done just right. I doubt my review will drop, but it could rise up to 5. To be continued... ... So, I came back a second time with my friend. This time, I wasn't even feeling the pizza vibe, so I went with a meatball... wedge. Which is a sub if you're not from the area. Don't be scared by the name. It was tasty, but as I expected, just meatball, cheese, and some sauce. Actually a better balance of sauce to cheese than the pizzas, I thought. I was a little perturbed that our visiting friend's white slice is just pure ricotta, no white sauce below, no mozz on top. From my second experience, I'm keeping it at 4 stars. read more

The place is decent sized I the front with tables towards the back. The food is delicious! I had a margarita slice and a chicken parm sandwich! Let's start with the pizza. Nice crust, very flavorful sauce but not overpowering and a decent amount of cheese. Now this chicken parm was delicious! It comes open. I added some red pepper flakes to mine because I love the kick of heat! Fresh chicken cutlets with a layer of sauce and the right amount of cheese. Not sloppy and a very good portion to share. But if you want to devour it on your own go for it. You might struggle a bit with the rest of the sandwich but it's amazing! read more

I grew up loving Sal's pizza. This is my first stop back in New York. Since 1964, they've been serving the best pizza in Westchester County. Their famous Sicilian is widely regarded as the best in NY & it doesn't need any toppings, it's just perfect!. We ordered at the pizza counter, grabbed a seat & got up when we're called. The pizzeria was filed with noisy teens on a Thursday at 7 pm. The slices are more expensive than I remember but larger. Surprisingly very slow service, there was a huge line and they took our order after a while and we were served our pizzas but they guy who was supposed to grab our drinks kept getting distracted. He took our drink order and pulled our drinks out and set them on the back counter, then started helping another customer and we had to flag him down to remind him our drinks were sitting out and we still needed to pay, so our pizza was getting cold. We had a large Sicilian a slice, a salad and some drinks all for around $60- The ordering I think is the biggest weakness, there are a herd of fellows behind the counter and there doesn't seem to be any organized mechanism of taking or entering orders. This view is Sicilan-based. So I ate here years ago and wasn't impressed. I think we had a plain pie but not sure. I came back to give it another shot but had seen someone's photos of their Sicilian. It looked cheesy and good so that's what I had my sights on. I am going to give it four stars instead of three right now. Reason being, I didn't get to judge the plain so it feels unfair--nor any other menu items. Anyway, there was a great amount of cheese, the crust was good and texture pretty good. However, I felt the flavor was really lacking. At first when I grabbed a little piece of cheese to try I was pleasantly surprised, it tasted good. But as I went on to take bites I felt that it was a bit too mild for me on the flavor. Pretty "mid" I think is the word used nowadays. I would give the Sicilian slice a 4 or 5 out of 10. Sal's has had the best NY pizza for at least 40 years. Tonight we ordered on Uber and picked it up. There was a line out the door and a doorman handling the crowds at this modest pizza-by-the-slice joint located in Mamaroneck. The Sicilian pizza has so much cheese and a crisp and chewy crust. We always get the Gorgonzola salad, a very not- fashionable-but-so-delicious salad of iceberg lettuce, tomato slices, Gorgonzola, and a red wine vinaigrette. Eggplant parm is to die for. Having grown up in Miami I'm no stranger to NY/NJ style pizza, and this is my preferred style (Chicago deep dish/thin and Detroit be damned!) so needless to say I was beyond excited to try some authentic NY pizza. Sal's was EVERYTHING I had hopped it would be; ooey-gooey cheese, crisp spicy pepperoni cups, and the most tangy red sauce, soooo good! The crust was also very nice. Perfect undercarriage, flawless chew, really delightful. The Sicilian wasn't bad either, but definitely not my style. Tho it was a very good slice as well. Sal's has been a favorite of mine since I was in elementary school in the late 1960's to the present time. A few years ago, I was extremely sick, and a friend gave me a choice of any place I wanted to eat and I chose Sal's! I have brought friends and family from around the country and world to Sal's all raved about their pizza's! Staff is always friendly and helpful! It's a classic. Not fancy, and no one cares! The service was extremely poor! I ordered a chicken Parm wedge And the person who supposedly, placed the order never checked on it ! My husband ordered a Sicilian slice and it came within 15 minutes. I was waiting and waiting for my chicken Parm hero and it never showed up ! They checked on the order and apparently it was never placed or the person who was to prepare it never did. They did return my money and said sorry that was it. As I was getting into my car, I turned, around and looked into the store window and I saw the person who took my order eating a slice of pizza in front of the oven and did not give it a second thought. I have been going to Sal's for as long as I can remember. Growing up we'd go out for dinner at least once a week to Sal's. Now we do take out on Fridays and it's just as good. Sal's is the place you go to for a homey feeling with some of the best pizza/hot dishes. When I talk to people and they tell me they only eat the pizza, I always tell them they need to get the penne vodka or the gnocchi. By far my favorite two pastas! The people that work there are always the same and some of the nicest people. Service is always great, but plan on waiting to sit at time because sitting is limited. With Sal's Sicilian, and their regular slices as well, it's all about their ingredients. My wife and I went there last Saturday for lunch and we sat down and devoured our slices. I wanted a quality slice of pizza and decided to try out this place due to the positive reviews. I ordered 3 slices, a chicken roll, and an order of fries via Uber eats. The cheese pizza and chicken bacon ranch slice was okay. All slices arrived cold and needed to be reheated. The buffalo chicken slice and pizza roll were inedible. I've never had a slice of buffalo chicken pizza that I couldn't eat so this was a first. The pizza roll may have been good had it arrived fresh but it was hard and just got harder when reheated. The dipping sauce was watery and also inedible. Needless to say, I will not be ordering here again. read more

Good hole in the wall pizza place with fresh ingredients and fast service. No bells and whistles, just great NY pizza. I got to try the thin crust and silician crust pizza. I love thick fluffy pan crust style pizza like Detroit and Chicago style so the silician style was perfect for me. It was airy with bubbles and the corner slice had a delicious crispy crust. I got it with fresh garlic, anchovies and mushrooms. Lots of toppings and fresh. I also got to try the thin crust cheese pizza. It lacked on sauce but the cheese was nicely layered. Plain and simply the best salad slice AND Sicilian slice in Westchester!

I've heard many good things about Sal's from friends and colleagues but had never gotten around to trying it before the other night. I'm generally weary of pizza in Westchester but people have said this is some of the best in the county. With most eateries being closed or takeout only due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought this would be a good opportunity to try Sal's out and to support a local business during these challenging times as well. Sal's is old school - it's been in Mamaroneck for over 50 years and is famous for their Sicilian slices. The interior totally emulates an old school pizzeria - I loved the aesthetics and feel of the space. Their menu is mostly pizza with a number of toppings to choose from as well as some staple Italian dishes. I wasn't feeling the Sicilian, so instead I got a regular pie with sausage and hot vinegar peppers. I was also curious about their mozzarella sticks so I picked up some of those as well (I was sharing with others - I can eat but I didn't totally lose control ;-). I called ahead to order and was told 25-30 minutes which was perfect since it was going to take me that amount of time to get there. The pizza was good - in my opinion, the closest I've seen to an authentic NYC slice here in Westchester. The crust wasn't too thick, the sauce was solid, and the toppings were just enough to add good flavor without overwhelming the pie. I thought the mozz sticks were great - they were fried in batter instead of breadcrumbs so they kept their consistency when you bit into it and didn't ooze out cheese or fall apart. Overall, I had a great first experience at Sal's. Is it the best pizza I've ever had? No - but when comparing it to other pizzerias in Westchester it's one of the best, and it can hold its own against NYC. When in Westchester, I would definitely go out of my way to come here - after all, I still need to try that Sicilian. read more
