I appreciate that they reuse metal spoons rather than throwing away single-use plastics. Off their summer 2019 menu, the birthday cake with blackberries and the goat cheese marionberry habanero stand out. I think a combination of honey lavender and the goat cheese berry habanero brings an incredible depth of flavors: herbal, floral, sweet, and spicy. If you're not into fruity or floral flavors, the salted caramel and the almond brittle are their most popular. I prefer the latter, with its delicious ganache ribbons and thick almond brittle toffee chunks. This place also does vegan flavors well, especially the chocolate hazelnut cookie crunch. Some of the ice cream flavors can come off as a lot or extravagant on name and concept alone but I can say that the ones that caught my personal attention and they allowed me to sample, did not disappoint at all. The only ice cream place I revisit over and over again, and make excuses to visit again. Aptly named Salt and Straw, there is something about this ice cream that is way better than the rest. There is definitely a salt component in many of my favorites I've had here, including the chocolate chip cookie dough malt, which I pretty much do a 1/2 of combined with a 1/2 of a seasonal flavor, each time I visit. The salt elevates the flavors in each scoop, and boy is there flavor. They're not just seasonal, one-note stuff. Sometimes it's complex combinations of multiple new ingredients, clearly with much thought and balance put into each one. It's always fresh, vibrant, and whatever ingredients are present will always shine and be perfectly balanced against the ultra-creamy and dense ice cream. Even offbeat flavors knock it out of the park. So many flavors I'd want to bring back as well, including the Goosebumps edition. Sometimes there's some slight misses, like the latest Mushroom flavor (I sampled it and already kind of knew I wouldn't enjoy it as much as the others), but even these are fantastic compared to other premium ice cream counterparts. I shared the "one scoop" which you can get two different flavors. We got the honey lavender which had a super strong lavender flavor. Very fragrant. We also got the Beecher's cheese with peppercorn. We had planned to visit this shop for years, ever since it came to Seattle. Then we moved out of state and had forgotten about it until we were in town last week. The line was around the block on a Friday night but it went so fast! They offer such unique, homemade flavors and during the summer they really play up the wonderful berry options of the PNW. We both got two scoops on waffle cones. The cone was fresh and soft enough to enjoy with each bite of the frosty goodness. For a small charge you can get two scoops in one (half and half) which is a great way to enjoy two flavors and still button your pants later. Parking was a pain and we ended up paying too much but we were on vacation so it was ok. It's a MUST visit kind of place. Super friendly, fresh and fast. I would welcome S&S to Stony Brook with open arms and tears of joy, but this is Capitol Hill, where a great alternative is steps away. They do a lot right. The Ice cream flight is brilliant. In the past, I've gotten Duck Skin Soy Sauce at the original Portland location as well as Pork Blood and Matcha with Mealworms and Crickets at their Capitol Hill location. At Salt and Straw, anything goes. Salt and Straw changes their flavors every month. The theme for this June is Summer Camp. Unlike other ice cream shops, the scoopers actually come up to each customer in line and ask if they would like to sample any flavors (yes, you can sample as many flavors as you want!). My friend and I decided to sample all five of their featured June flavors: S'mores- chocolate ice cream with graham crackers and get this... POP ROCKS for the real crackling experience! Buttermilk Pancakes, Eggs and Bacon- maple ice cream with candied egg and pieces of bacon. A bit too sweet for my taste, but it might pair nicely with a less sweet flavor Berries, Beans, and BBQ sauce- definitely the strangest combo of the month. I liked the berry flavor, but I'm not sure how I felt about the baked bean texture. Cornbread and Nettle Brittle- this one you MUST TRY! The nettle brittle is basically like toffee, except it doesn't leave that sticky residue on your teeth. It's also not overly sweet and is full of pieces of nettle brittle. Mushroom Muddy Buddies- mushroom/chocolate flavored ice cream with pieces of chocolate Chex mix (I think)... has an earthy flavor and also isn't overly sweet Anyway, my friend and I had similar taste preferences so we both ended up getting a half scoop of cornbread nettle and a half scoop of s'mores (yes, you can split a single scoop into two half scoops and get two different flavors). The flavors balanced each other perfectly. Prices might be higher than Molly Moons (I paid $6 for a single scoop here), but the flavor selection and service here is unlike any other. Also, if you have a family, I would highly recommend getting a scoop flight like I did for my last birthday. You get four different scoops for $11. One of the major trends in food over the past few years has been the inclusion of non-traditional items served in the traditional way. Case and point - cheese and peppercorn toffee ice cream.... it may not sound awesome, but it is awesome! We came here on the recommendation of some friends, and quickly found that salt and straw is the type of place that does nontraditional things very well! This place is located near Capitol Hill Pike. We came at about 830 pm, and there was a line out the door. We were told that said line was actually not as bad as it normally is. If and when you decide to try this place out, make sure that you give yourself ample time and pay attention to the actual time of day when you'll be going. The place holds about 50 people, and there is actual seating or standing room, while dining, for about 20. It took us about 15 minutes to get to the line, and with each passing minute we knew more and more that we had made the right decision. While in line, we checked out the menu, and as we got closer we were able to sample everything. I think a literally had a sample of almost everything that was available. It happened to be chocolate month, and as such we decided chocolate options were needed. I decided to get a sampler, which included kids scoops of four different ice cream's. This ultimately serve to allow all of us to try more flavors... At least that's what I'm telling myself! We got chili and orange chocolate, And ice cream with chocolate pieces and a wine reductionSwirled throughout, the Beechers cheese and peppercorn toffee , as well as a coffee and whiskey ice cream. My better half got a dual scoop of raspberry ginger beer and chocolate gooey brownie. She decided to indulge on a waffle cone is well - you only live once right now! By the ice cream here is a little bit on the expensive side, the flavor combinations and just the general atmosphere make it well worth it. A really great place for ice cream. It reminds me of Earnest and Rain or Shine as it also has unique flavors that you probably won't find at other ice cream places. This one is slightly different than the Portland one in terms of the sampler flight. The Seattle one has 4 flavors on spoons. The Portland location has 8 flavors in smaller spoons. The size for the Seattle one is kids size portions. The Portland is more of actual sampler size so you get a few bites but you also get to sample more flavors. There is seating along the window, which means on a sunny day, you will feel the heat and your ice cream will probably melt faster. It was a hot day when we went so we had to eat our ice cream quickly. The servers are helpful and provided good recommendations. There is only one washroom so there can be a lineup for that. read more

Big fan. I've been here many times already in my first few weeks of being in Seattle. The line can get super long and wrap around the corner, but it moves fast and the wait goes by quickly since you can pass the time studying their eccentric flavors. The standout flavors I've ordered (as of June & July) have been the honey lavender, skillet cornbread, and berry birthday cake. All of them were delicious and still unique. Some of the more bizarre flavors I've sampled here are: berries, beans, & BBQ sauce, Beecher's cheese w/ peppercorn toffee, and buttermilk pancakes, bacon, & eggs. These ones I couldn't commit to but just had to sample for the fun of it. I must say that some of the flavors I've sampled have tasted as weird as they sound. The waffle cones are an extra $1.25, but they make them fresh in house and they smell irresistable. It costs an extra 50 cents for a split scoop, meaning two flavors in the size of a single scoop, which comes out to be $6 if you get it in a cup. I shouldn't fail to mention that the customer service here is top notch. They actually hire people whose jobs are just to greet you in line. You are always served with a smile, and if you find yourself waiting too long after you've ordered, they will apologize and give you a coupon without you ever needing to complain. This place has been hyped up to me by so many people, so I came in with really high expectations (that were met!!). They have a very efficient system in which they ask for your taste testing (love that they do this, for all the interesting flavors they have) so by the time you have to order you'll be ready, which makes the usually long line move very quickly. I chose the honey lavender + chocolate gooey brownie flavors in a single split scoop. I am a big fan of Ben & Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie ice cream but this brownie ice cream (5/5) was a close contender, if not a close equal to the Ben & Jerry's flavor. The honey lavender was also good (4/5), but definitely doesn't have too strong of a lavender, which is something I prefer. read more

I wish I could rate this place higher than 5 stars because it truly exceeded my expectations. Even though the line was quite long and stretched down the block when I arrived, it moved surprisingly quickly. A server kindly approached us and allowed us to sample a variety of flavors so we could decide on our order before reaching the front of the line. Eventually, my boyfriend and I settled on a scoop of the rose & watermelon sorbet and the sour cherry pie from their summer limited edition choices.
