This is Salt + Smoke's newest location, in Downtown Kirkwood. I tried their South County location months ago, and found it disappointing. We tried again today and stopped in for lunch. Positives first: this is a bright and airy location. It's decorated well, it's spacious and it is clean. The waitress we had, Sierra, was friendly and gave us free refills. Sadly, the host and other people we dealt with were not friendly or personable, so it seems the staff is hit or miss. The food was good, but not spectacular. My Mom got the Pulled Chicken Sandwich, and we both agreed that it was missing something. The Pimento Cheese and Corn Relish that came with it lacked flavor. I got the BLT, and it tasted like something I could have made at home for $5. The Beef Fat Fries were delicious though. Once again, underwhelmed but not fully against Salt + Smoke. I just don't see the appeal, maybe it's just me.

We were excited to come for the grand opening, and love that it is walking distance from our house! The interior is nicely decorated with TVs and some music on in the background. Lots of seating inside and out, looking forward to enjoying the patio when it warms up more. We tried a couple of appetizers, including the deviled eggs, fried pickles and hush puppies. All were good, but the hush puppies were our favorite! We tried the walnut old fashioned and the spiced pear sangria, the sangria was out favorite. We sat at the bar and our server (Kelly) was super friendly and helpful. She explained the draft cocktails and helped answer questions to narrow our drink choices. Looking forward to coming again for dinner!

Come hungry! This place is so good, and the Kirkwood location is spacious inside. The outside was busy and the fire pit is a cute touch. You can't miss with the meat here. We both got the bestie combos with ribs and another meat, and all were awesome. Plus the Mac & cheese is probably some of the best I've had - super buttery and creamy. The service was also great. The staff were friendly and they refilled our drinks quickly. The food also comes out quickly. I'll be back!

Best Brisket sandwich I've ever had I strongly recommend to come here hungry because you're gonna get full really fast, it's a bit greasy, but that's what it is

Excellent dry rub ribs. Caesar salad thick Caesar dressing was very good. Unbeatable deviled eggs.

5 stars for Sawmill BBQ Pub & Grill…read more We were originally trying to go to another barbecue restaurant but they ran out of brisket (WHAT!). Then I typed in some great barbecue restaurants on Yelp, and there appeared Sawmill BBQ Pub & Grill. It looks like just a regular bar with a music stage, but don't judge a book by its cover - the food is amazing. The portions are massive and the prices are reasonable, as are the drink prices. This is definitely more of a locals joint, but definitely worth stopping in for anyone if you want some St. Louis style BBQ. The brisket platter was the best - big portions, 2 sides and 2 pieces of garlic bread. The Jalepano Mac and cheese balls are awesome, so much flavor. The salmon platter was also very tasty and fresh. The live music is fun (but loud), and our waitress was nice. Overall, if you what BBQ and are in the area, this is definitely worth checking out.

The staff were super friendly and welcoming, which immediately put me in a good mood. And the food? Way better than I expected. The smoked chicken wings were chef's kiss. easily some of the best I've had. And that homemade ranch was straight‑up scrump‑didly‑umptious. The mac and cheese bites? Solid choice. Crispy, cheesy, no notes. Overall, this little spontaneous stop turned into a win!

We've generally had good experiences there, a few that were so-so, but tonight was awful! The sign out front reads "see hostess inside for patio seating, so we made our way to the hostess stand. I asked the young lady that greeted us if we needed to be seated for the chairs along the railing, or just tables? I was told "just the tables, other chairs are open seating". Then I asked to confirm that there were servers for the chairs on the railing, to which she replied "yes, but only for drinks and apps". Perfect - that's what we wanted. We proceeded to sit at two bar stools along the railing in front of the stage, and waited to be served. And waited. And waited. And waited. No one ever acknowledged that we were there, much less took our order. The waitress serving the three tables next to us visited them repeatedly, but never so much as made eye contact with us. After about 20 minutes, I walked back to the hostess stand and asked "do you know who is supposed to be our server? We've been there 20 minutes, and no one has helped us." The hostess said she'd check into it, and I went back to my seat. Over the next 15 minutes, the same server visited the three tables near us, but never acknowledged us. Then, another server waited on a lady sitting at the fir pit. I'd hoped that maybe she was going to help us, but she took the one order and walked back inside. WE WALKED OUT! Like I said, once loved the place. Not sure if they can't keep good staff, or if their success at the location has left them feeling like they no longer need to try, but the place has definitely lost the magic it once had.

Service was wonderful, our server was friendly and gave us some great recs. My husband and I shared the 3 meat plate and had leftovers to take home. We started off with the deviled eggs (good) and the hush puppies (horrible). The hush puppies had no flavor to them and were burnt on the outside. They give you a honey butter with the hush puppies and I see why because the hush puppies are horrible. Then we ordered the three meat platter with two sides. Smoke wings, ribs and chicken. The meat overall was good. They do offer four different sauces at the table to go along with the meat. We also ordered the coleslaw and fries, which were both good. There was some kind of bread (Cheddar and bacon popover) that came along with this plate and flavorless (horrible) It was pointless to have that on the plate. Drinks- Lucky Club cola Our waitress was great and she knew a lot about the food there. They did offer us a sample of their special. It was some kind of turkey jalapeño sandwich. I wish I would've ordered that. It was good.

Mr. J's BBQ is a BBQ stand on the NE corner of The Kirkwood Farmers Market…read more You can find him there on Thursday and Saturday. He serves great St. Louis backyard style BBQ prepared in a couple barrel pits. He prepares several meats every day he is there and has a number of sides. Today I tried his ribs, his brisket, his pulled chicken, and chicken thigh. All had good smoke flavor and were well cooked and seasoned. I really enjoyed the chicken thigh and the ribs. Don't get me wrong the other items were good, but I enjoyed those 2 the most. I'm not a fan of pulled chicken, I've noted that previously, but Mr. J's pulled chicken was right good. He puts a little of his se'lah gold sauce with it and some sautéed peppers and onions. That makes for good flavor. The reason for the 4 not 5 stars is minor. I had several slices of brisket on my plates and the first slice I picked up while nicely smokey and well seasoned was tough. However, every other slice was perfectly tender indicating a proper cook. I only tried his Se'lah Original Sauce. But let me tell you he has a wonderful quintessential St. Louis style BBQ sauce in that. Man is it good. I get to KFM often during the summer. I'll be back by for sure. Y'all enjoy!!
