Saltus is amazing! This is always my family and I's go-to restaurant choice when we are in Beaufort. It can be tough to get a reservation, especially last minute, but sitting at the bar is also always a good alternative! We ate here the last two nights and had a wonderful experience both times. The first night we sat at the bar and had such great service. The bartenders are so personable and attentive. Their dirty martinis are absolutely to die for (and my dad and I are both harsh critics on martinis so this says a lot)! We all started with a side Caesar salad which was great. We ordered the shrimp roll, salmon roll, and spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna was our favorite. We also ordered the salmon which was awesome. The second night we started with sashimi which was also wonderful and then ordered the quail and shrimp and grits. Our plates were all completely empty. The shrimp and grits were some of the best we've ever had! We had a great server and the food was outstanding. Both nights were 10/10 experiences. read more

The food this evening was amazing. I had the California roll (lump crab) and the Spring Rolls (which were chicken with a Thai peanut sauce). My dinner partner had the steak tartare and the spring rolls. Dessert was the crème brûlée and I had the chocolate dessert (I'm sorry the name is escaping me) with homemade shortbread cookies. The cookies didn't look like much, but they were delicious! We were mmmming and ahhhing so much over the food that we were getting strange looks, it was that good! The food here is fantastic, they've really upped their game since we were there in the Fall. They need a little more attention from the wait staff and water folks. read more

Had some out of town guests and thought we would take them to Saltus for a nice dinner. Waitress was very nice and helpful. Food took over an hour and wasn't great for the wait. Guest said his potatoes were burnt but didn't want to send it back and have to wait longer. My steak was undercooked but kind of had the same Thoughts about not wanting to wait, so I just took mine to go. The sushi was awesome and the bread was fresh and yummy! My husband was underwhelmed about his fried shrimp, but did enjoy his pom frites. Maybe a good spot for sushi and cocktails, but that's about it. Just expected more for the atmosphere and price. Saltus is one of my favorite restaurants in SC. I love the relaxed atmosphere and I've never had a problem with the food or service. They do fill up pretty easily though so if you're planning on coming here I recommend making a reservation. Last time I went we ended up having to sit at the bar and we arrived shortly after they opened. Their drinks, sushi, salmon, and truffle fries are always top notch. I recently got the shrimp and grits and it was good, but the presentation wasn't the best. The bartender we had last time was very attentive and personable. I had an old fashioned and told him to surprise me with the type of whiskey, and I don't know what he used but it was superb. This place is a little more on the pricey side so I really only go on special occasions but I always consider it when I'm in Beaufort. read more

Went here for our anniversary- pretty disappointed. My boyfriend ordered the filet and asked for medium, got it and it was almost well done. For $40+ it definitely should have been done right. He also ordered a bud light and it was luke warm. I got a caesar salad with fried shrimp, the salad was okay, nothing special, the shrimp was pretty good. He also got the mashed potatoes which were good. The service was great which is what earned it 3 stars. Nice environment, very clean. Wish I could say it was worth the $150 we just spent but for 2 people for an "okay" meal, it just wasn't. read more

Saltus was the best restaurant we tried in Beaufort. Although the menu is a bit unconventional (Sushi and American cuisine). To my surprise I actually enjoyed the California roll. The roll was stuffed with lump crabmeat and avocado. The peel and eat shrimp were nicely seasoned and tasted freshly caught. Lastly the locally caught pecan "sheepshead" fish is up there as one of the best seafood items that I have ever tasted. read more

I just moved here. I had a friend come for a visit and was told Saltus was the best restaurant around so we went there to celebrate her arrival. The ambulance is wonderful and the outdoor area has a great view. BUT then it went down hill. Our waitress was curt even tho the restaurant was not busy. Our food was not great. My friend ordered oysters, she got 8 little oysters and we paid well over $20 for them. I ordered lobster mac & cheese for $22. It was made with processed cheese and I wonder if the lobster was canned. I will probably go again but only for drinks. read more

Service was great, however the food was another story. We had the wedge salad and the fried ousters. Both were what you would expect of a higher end restaurant. Then I had a shrimp and grits. Very disappointed, the grits were soupy and had no flavor. I think the chef missed some seasoning. When I asked our server about it, I got another bowl of grits. They were a bit stiffer, however still no flavor and I ate my 6 small shrimp already. Oh well, I cannot recommend this place unfortunately with the inconsistency of dish flavors. This is a very gross restaurant. We were seated quickly and looking back this was not a surprise- no line should have been a clue about the quality of this place when every other restaurant had 45 min waits. The seating outside is great probably the best in Beaufort...minus the fact that my date was sitting in a bush- literally head in a bush to the point we had to move our table forward. Regardless, we started with the pork belly, enjoyed is a hard word to describe the way I ate the 4 dollar a inch burnt belly that was very over salted, as I chased it with the 4 day old slaw. I will say presentation was good but taste was lacking. My Diet Coke was the least of my worries but as I took a sip it felt like I relived the 90s with how crash that soda fountain was. I ordered 2 sushi rolls. One was supposed to be a shrimp roll but one part had a piece of popcorn shrimp in it, not a joke. The other had some kind of canned peach (??). Don't worry it was presented pretty with soy sauce doused on top of it. This was so nice to remember as I dealt with the worst stomach ache and diarrhea of my life. My date ordered the fried chicken that is hard to describe in any other way besides inedible. After it was served we had a hard time finding any bite of chicken where the breading wouldn't slide off with the touch of a fork. This is my bday by the way, so desserts were on the house! This was much appreciated and was a very kind gesture. They also offered my date a free dessert because she couldn't stomach more than 2 bites of her meal. They also have a hundred dollar steak, I'm so sorry if you ordered this. Our check composed of everything that was said to be taken off but after card was given back the check changed, I have no idea what's going on. Overall, great atmosphere outside and a great place to eat if you're looking forward to eating something that constantly reminds you you're wasting money on food you could make better yourself. These guys bank on appearance and location so if that's your thing hit this place up -just not my cup of tea. I was so excited to give this place 5 stars since this is our 3rd visit here this summer. (And second time this week) But.... Tonight the food was still good, but you could absolutely tell the top team was not working tonight. We arrived at 830 and when we made the reservation asked for a table at the window. Nope. We sat 4 tables away. Not even a tiny apology that our request could not be accommodated. We were just hopeful when we called earlier that it could work out. It took FOREVER to get our food and the server actually forgot a side dish! So we said forget putting the side dish order in. We enjoyed our salads, the stake tartar was delicious (that's what took a long time) A few days ago we asked the sushi chef to make a special sushi with the steak tartar and he did. The chef even came out to discuss the details. It was sooo good! Our server said he had even heard about that special sushi and saw a photo of it, too. But he came back and said the chef was unable to make it tonight since he didn't know how. We had told the server the 4 ingredients that were in it. So, we were disappointed. We will go back again but on a weekend night when the top staff is working. It's a great place, we were just disappointed tonight. We drove a long way. The review a hold have been 5. I can't say anything good about our visit for dinner last night. Perhaps our opinion was shaped by the incompetence displayed by our server and not a reflection of the restaurant as a whole. In no particular order: 1. Took forever to get attention to place a drink order 2. Took almost as long to get two drinks delivered to the table. Said he had to take a break! 3. Since he disappeared again, it took time to order. We ordered simply. A wedge salad (buttermilk dressing)with grilled shrimp and a wedge salad (blue cheese dressing) with scallops 4. Order was delivered again late and was wrong to boot. Shrimp was deep fried and scallops were not lightly done. 5. Orders returned and replaced. Still poor quality 6. We made reservations for 8pm on a Saturday night a few months ago. The place was packed and we had to wait at the bar for a bit. It wasn't an issue for us, though. The restaurant - both inside and out - is gorgeous. We were sat in one of the booths near the bar area. The food was fantastic! The service was average at best. It felt like what I'd get at a chain restaurant, not what I'd expect at a restaurant of this caliber. Food = 5 - except the she crab soup - so small! Service = 2 Ambiance = 4 The she-crab soup is one of, if not the best I've ever had. My complaint is the price. At $11, the size of the soup was laughable. In Charleston, $11 equates to a bowl, not a cup. What we received was a small cup at best. I wish I had taken a picture. I'm hoping that since my review is a few months old now, they've changed the size of the soup. The arugula salad was fantastic. The scallop dish was wonderful. My issue with this restaurant was the service and the price for what you get. The food was fantastic, but Saltus really missed the mark on everything else. We'll probably be back at some point, but only after we've done our rounds at the other equally as good staples in Beaufort. read more

I was surprised that this place had not received any reviews yet. We were a little skeptical for this reason but should not have been. We shared the clam chowder for an appetizer and it was the best clam chowder I've ever had. The clams were as fresh as you could get and the broth was very tasty. We wanted to lick the bowl! I was curious about the scallops and pulled pork so I had to get that. It was very good; the scallops were cooked perfectly and the pulled pork and sweet potato hash were outstanding. My husband got the shrimp and grits made with mascarpone cheese, outstanding! Our waitress was a little slow as we sat there for quite a while waiting for her to come take our order (several customers who came after us placed their orders and received food before we did) but she was pleasant enough. The prices were reasonable and the decor was very nice. They had a nice patio out back with a fire pit; if the weather had been a little warmer we would have loved to sit out back and watch the harbor. All in all, a good experience. We will be back next time we find ourselves in Beaufort! read more

This place was fantastic! We visited on Monday night, October 6, 2014. Our server Justin was AMAZING! He answered all our questions with such knowledge and patience. He gave great recommendations. He was nothing less than fabulous. Our appetizer and my soup came out at the same time (as requested) with time to eat both and still wait, at most 5 minutes for our entrees. Which was absolutely perfect. We had plenty of time to eat and digest before our entrees. We ordered our dessert after we were done eating and it was phenomenal! Again, gave us a perfect time to digest! My husband had a steak that was cooked a perfect Mid Rare with crab lump topping, mash potatoes and asparagus. He ate every last bite! I had lobster tails and asparagus. Delicious! The cheese cake was the lightest, fluffiest cheese cake I have ever had with a perfect amount of strawberry topping! I came here on my last night in town and sat on the patio. It is definitely a fancy/special occasion place. I had a nice cocktail and some wine and enjoyed the crab louie salad and steak tartare. Both were delicious, but pretty standard for these two items. You definitely come here for the ambiance and more upscale service experience. I had some sort of chocolate lava cake dessert, this was kind of disappointing. I am not sure about their other desserts, but I would not order this again- it did not seem to be heated up enough and the lava was more solid than liquid when you cut into it, no real "lava" effect. read more

My husband gets SEVERE cravings for their beef tartare appetizer (served with potato chips to scoop it up) and we love the wood fired oysters just as much ...so we always get both! Everything that I have tried on the dinner menu is good. Generous demiglace with the beef cuts. I especially appreciate that they are open 7 days a week. Wait staff are friendly and low maintenance. Bar staff seem to really enjoy and invest in their work as a craft. Can't beat the location: it's a jump off! Right out there front door is Beaufort's waterfront park and it's accessible by car, foot, carriage or boat (public day dock and Beaufort marina get you to the park). read more

To my disappointment it was a wing and thigh, a mere 2 ounces of meat, thank god for the potatoes and collard greens. We recently moved down to Beaufort and asked where to go for a nice dinner on our anniversary. Saltus was suggested so we went on our anniversary instead of a weekend to avoid a long wait (COVID means no reservations). We had our choice of table on the patio which provided a beautiful view. Waitstaff wore masks and did not linger long at the table. I started with a tasty Sancerre and California roll while my husband had the crab bisque both were delicious; the bisque had Smokey undertones with a creamy buttery finish. We took our time deciding on entrees, everything on this week's menu sounded wonderful! My husband decided on the filet mignon with Parmesan truffle fries grilled over a wood fire. They forgot his truffle butter but quickly brought out a ramekin of it which we used to further dip the fries in. The filet was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of chargrill. I had the salmon "Sea Island Style" which consisted of creamy buttery grits, collards, a tomato sauce and a sweet corn chow chow- wow! It is the Lowcountry in a dish. The combination of flavors from sweet, to salty, to umami were incredible and worked perfectly with the slightly tart white Pinot noir. We ended this perfect meal with the best Key Lime Pie I've ever had (and I've tried many from RI to Key West!) and a fruity slightly bitter espresso. I like Saltus. I like the staff, I like the food...today was not a good day for Saltus. I got a side Caesar and fried shrimp...salad was very heavy handed on the dressing and the entire order took nearly 40 minutes and I was sitting at the bar. They were semi busy but not at all in the weeds. Not sure what the mix up was but y'all didn't do well tonight. You're better than this Saltus. Do better Edited to say, within an hour of posting my review Saltus reached out to me. Let me say I am a big Saltus fan and tonight was the exception not the rule. We were seated in the dark back corner of the room despite many available tables with water views, and then ignored by the waitstaff while tables seated later were seated, greeted and offered menus. Over priced. I don't see $3 per oyster but it is the same price in Savannah. We ate inside and the first thing I noticed was a musty smell. It must be the carpet. Went here for the first time after hearing a lot about it. Drove 5 hours and skipped out on other places locally to try Saltus. $128 later and I'm still starving. The drinks were watered down. The food couldn't even fill up an infant and it's SO EXPENSIVE. The oysters I got were microscopic and it was the price of a whole bushel. My friend who also ate had a horrible stomach ache after eating his food and we had to pull over to throw up. The server only visited us once and someone else got us refills on drinks. And the best part is a drunk local allllll up in my personal space very horribly "whispering" extremely provocative nonsense to a man next to us. It was overall disgusting and this place is such a scam. I will be calling for refund. Wish me luck. read more
