GROSS! The floors are filthy- the booths are dirty and there is gross carpet that is dark brown that used to be aqua. I ordered a BLT and it was gross- something wasn't right with the mayo. The waitress never once smiled at us even when we first walked in. Absolutely disgusting. The health and food administration needs to do an inspection of this place. read more

Salt Water Diner completely took me by surprise. It's a local, family friendly diner with great food and service. I personally loved the customized mugs and layout of the interior. Abby, our server, was attentive and delightful. I eat a lot of pancakes, so I feel confident saying that these pancakes are some of the best in Mass. Fluffy yet crispy, not too sweet but buttery and savory. The omelets certainly didn't disappoint either. They were absolutely delicious! Everything! I can't say enough good things. Sausage was excellent as were the pancakes, breakfast burritos and French toast. I'm a coffee snob(but not in any other facet of life)and this coffee was excellent. Service was terrific as well. Prices are quite reasonable. We thought we would have paid double if we had eaten in Newton. Not rushed; food came out hot. Terrible...we were waiting for someone to come over to take our name, ask how many people we have in our party (2 and 1 child), and every single waitstaff just stared at us and walked by us for over 15 minutes. Supremely typical diner in downtown Hull. My aunt recommended it because it's apparently the place that most locals go to grab a bite to eat and I can see why. The food was pretty good and the prices were CHEAP. The service was friendly and quick and our food came out in a nice, timely fashion. Very typical diner menu: normal breakfast selections (eggs, pancakes, toast, bacon, hash browns and omelettes and sandwiches), sandwiches and dinner specials. The prices were great (like $5 for an entire huge breakfast with pancakes) and the specials change nightly. Where to start? It's hard to decide which is worse- the food or the service. The food is fairly typical for a greasy spoon, but it's exactly that- greasy. Portions are small and the hash browns rarely come out hot. All of that would be forgivable if the service weren't so bad. I have never ONCE had a positive experience with a server. You could wait 20 minutes to be seated in a restaurant full of open tables and STILL get attitude for asking for a coffee over 5 minutes after you've been seated. I know the food service industry is hard and often thankless work (I've been in the business for over 10 years), but the attitude you get from the servers here isn't worth the mediocre food and dirty vibe you get when you walk in the door. read more

We were in town for the week and decided to head out for breakfast on this morning. It was a warm morning and I guess the air conditioning wasn't working because the diner was noticeably warm inside. However, we made the decision to stay. I immediately noticed how dirty the floors were when we walked in. Napkins, food, stains, etc. Our table ordered the oatmeal with mixed fruit, the egg white omelette with onions, broccoli, and cheddar, and the western omelette. We had a side fruit bowl and of course, coffee. Why did we order hot coffee in a hot restaurant? My fault. However, as a coffee snob, the coffee was good. The omelettes were fine and there were plenty of veggies in each of them. The home fries were inconsistant, some were burnt and some were undercooked. We ordered the toast dry but it came smothered in butter. Did we send it back? No way. My wife said the oatmeal was bland and that it had no spices like cinnamon or nutmeg in it. The oatmeal portion was huge and she couldn't finish it. The fruit in the oatmeal and bowl was fresh. There were plenty of flies making their home in the diner. The service was very good and friendly. The prices were very reasonable and there is parking on the street and across in a municipal lot. I like the location and local charm that this diner has but it needs to "clean up its act" to take it to the next level. read more

After many years of driving by I finaly went inside the Saltwater Diner and I am so happy I did. I had the roasted pork with "real mashed potatoes" and fresh asparagus, it was delicious! This diner has the dated and vintage charm you would expect. The inside was large with beat up red booths and a bar area. Service was fast, it looked to be fun by a family. The menu was huge, offering breakfast all day. Since it was lunch time we decided on a buffalo chicken quesadilla and a hot pastrami with swiss. Food arrived timely. The quesadilla was huge. It could of fed two. it was thickly loaded with moist chicken and cheese. On the side came some sour cream and salsa. For $6.99 it was a tasty deal. The hot pastrami was smaller then we expected but came with a generous amount of fries. Out the door, full with a $15 bill is not a bad thing. In season this place must be hopping. A-OK. read more

First, parking is a total PITA. Next, the decor is just plain ugly - I know, I know IT'S A DINER but still...shabby chic costs next to nothing...or how about capitalize on all the cool history that Hull has? Nah. We'd rather it be as unappetizing as possible. Ok then. I've eaten here multiple times now....sadly. Nothing special - and just because it's a diner doesn't mean the food can't be awesome (for example, the Wheelhouse in Quincy is really, really good food AND has cute, albeit tacky, decor). Once, on a weekday, the service was so bad I had to get up multiple times and go to the counter to remind the server that I still needed milk for my tea and a fork. Honestly, I don't know WHY Hullonians bother with this place when there's another place at the very beginning of Hull (Corner Cafe, right next to the DDs) which is better overall and has some unique diner-type foods that this place doesn't (grits, potato pancakes, etc.) Plus, the Corner Cafe, situated where it is (on the corner of Bay St & Nantasket Ave) has a FABULOUS view of the ocean....and the decor is quaint. Oh and did I mention they have FREE off-street parking behind the Corner Cafe? Don't waste your time at the Saltwater....I think this is a case of Hull, being so small, has very few options for cheap eats and people have been conditioned to accept mediocrity. Blah! read more

Moments after I arrived in Hull for the first time, I was immediately given a bad impression when a man I presume to be the owner came out of Saltwater Diner and began aggressively yelling at my friends and me to move our car from a spot out front, where we had just paid the meter. He had seen that I had a beach bag with me, and seemed to assume that we were going to abandon our car there for the day. We tried to protest, but he got louder and more agitated, threatening to call the police and saying that our car would be gone when we got back. Ironically, we were actually parked there as paying customers of the (very friendly) convenience store across the street, and had just noticed the diner and thought about stopping there for lunch. Instead, we decided not to give him our business (or risk losing our vehicles!) so we moved on and found another place to eat. I highly recommend you skip this unfriendly establishment and continue down the road to Joe's Nautical Bar http://www.josnautical.com/ , where they treat everyone, even non-regulars, with respect and hospitality. read more

This diner has had a few owners over the past couple of years - and the previous owners did the business a huge disservice. The current owners are doing a terrific job - so please disregard any review before 2012 (I think). I've gone there a few times and have always had a terrific breakfast, fast & friendly service at a reasonable price. So now my visitors ask to go there when they return to Hull. Today I brought along a new friend for a bite to eat. She ordered the eggs benedict with crab cakes instead of bacon. A Maryland resident, she's a bit picky when it comes to crabs - and she beamed when she tasted the home made crab cakes, then repeatedly said, Yum yum. My meal was excellent as well. Service was fast & friendly, as usual. The price? Under $20 w/tip. I highly recommend you treat yourself to breakfast or lunch there and give them a chance. You won't be disappointed. BTW, the town of Hull has a huge problem with out-of-town beachgoers who park in the Kenberma business district instead of the recommended MDC lots. This has hurt local business owners tremendously, as their customers can't find parking to visit their establishments. So, I can't say I blame the previous owners for getting a little territorial over parking meter abuse. Most of the residents experience similar problems. read more

Probably one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. My boyfriend and I went to the diner on Labor Day around 11:00AM, our usual breakfast spot was closed so we decided to check around in the area and this restaurant popped up as the closest. We walked in, there were only two servers on both which walked by us without greeting us or letting us know if we could either seat ourselves or if we had to wait - so we waited ...it became obvious we had to seat ourselves and we waited for a couple to leave the bar seating they had. At that time it had been about 20 minutes which was fine because We waited for the next available seat. Moving forward the server to us was just an order taker - wasn't really happy to be there and was just going through the motions. At this point we were starving and just wanted to eat and go. About 10 minutes after ordering our food a man from the back of the kitchen yelled out " We're Closed!" My boyfriend and I sensed the frustration and aggravation in his voice ...The part that upset us the most is the feeling of being rushed - the food came out disgusting ...sausage was barely cooked...the eggs were greasy because the bacon and sausage was dumped onto the plate. This owner who was most likely the one cooking doesn't care about his guests or the quality of food he puts out. As a guest of restaurant to feel as though the meal was rushed to get us out and to clock out is off putting. I myself manage a restaurant and understand the frustration of situations in a restaurant but at least serve they remaining guest with care and food especially the food/ service you put out. Never will return and definitely won't be recommending this place. read more

We had lunch here on June 16th 2014. The menu selection is excellent. The owner who has run the establishment for the last several years seems to make a habit of checking on how you liked the food which is a really nice touch. Service was friendly and efficient. We both ordered breakfast which is available from opening to 2 pm. The eggs were done just as asked for. The home fries were the best we had ever tasted (Seriously) with crisp fried onions and great seasonings. The corned beef hash was cooked nicely and had good flavor. Restaurant was clean and seating was available at the counter or tableside with movable chairs that accommodate all sizes of people. The place was very clean and had a friendly atmosphere. We recommend this restaurant for very affordable pricing and excellent home style cooking. Judge for yourself, check it out for great diner food and you will not be disappointed. Very affordable meter parking at $.25 per hour is available out front for local business customers, however it is not meant for all day beach parking as some visitors have attempted to do from time to time. read more

This place is disappointing. They do not know how to cook eggs properly, which is sad for a place that specializes in breakfast. My breakfast order was not presented as described in the menu. They were grossly understaffed, which is unfortunate if you are not one of their regulars. You are less of a priority. This is unacceptable in a vacation spot like Hull. read more

This quaint, little diner in the center of Hull is cheap, convinant, and has well portioned comfort foods. The atmosphere is family oriented and welcomes groups and parties, as well as singles, with a large counter. The food, which includes breakfast all day, has HUGE portions, and comes out timely. Service was average, but food was fast. The place was obviously family run. Parking was easy with a public parking lot across the street at the local supermarket. I got an order of pancakes and was pleasently surprised to see three huge pancakes overflowing the plate. My husban's mediterranean omlete was great and coffee was hot. Just getting started on Yelp and thought I'd review the Saltwater Diner since I checked it out this past weekend. This place is so cheap it is hard to give it a bad rating, but even cheap restaraunts should maintain a minimum quality of food. Although the service was fast the eggs were runny, the pancakes were dry (almost inedible) and although the waitstaff seemed friendly the owner or manager did not seem so much. While we were eating this guy decides to go outside and yell (we could hear this from inside the establishment) at a group of young kids parked out front. I know Hull's streets well and it's not uncommon for people to park out there to run accross the street for a pack of smokes or something. This guy decides he wants to yell at them, disrupting the peaceful day everybody appeared to be having before then. He essentially threatened to have their car towed and said a few other things in a lighter voice which we couldn't quite make out, but man did this guy seem to get off on doing it. I'm guessing he just watches the window waiting for somebody to get into a shouting match with: one of the reasons we left ASAP and won't be returning. In short it's cheap but the foods not great and the wait staff is super nice but the owner or manager seems to be in need of some serious anger management. Fishing through the comments I can see a few other instances mentioning a rude environment and so I don't think this was a one time thing for him... in any case the beach is a short walk down the road! Check out one of the other restaraunts nearby and have a swim! read more
