Brianna at the bar was insane how awesome and perfect a bartender could be. I had everything I wanted within minutes and constantly followed up on for how everything was. And everything was very good. I came on Tuesday, so I enjoyed the benefits of taco Tuesday and the house margarita which was excellent. I stayed at the Fairfield Inn .2 miles away and walked here to avoid drinking and driving. What a great place to visit without the worries of boozing and cruising. I enjoyed a lively Tuesday evening meeting up with friends at Sam Diego's. The restaurant is spacious and colorful with a festive atmosphere, several bar areas and separate dining areas and in summer a back patio. The tiny back bar looked nicely private and more quiet. Our server, Doug, was fantastic, he set the stage for a nice experience by being friendly and very attentive. He made good recommendations describing each drink and dish helping me order well. The menu is large on choices and today Is taco Tuesday and they offer an additional menu at $14.95 and a mini margarita for $7.95. I ordered off this tonight. Birria beef tacos that came with 2 small flour tortillas (not fried as I was informed in advance) but filled generously full of delicious seasoned beef. It included & a thick consommé sauce for dunking & only one side choice, I had refried beans, all was very nicely flavored and the dipping was rich n tasty. I started with the $7.95 margarita but it was pretty good but petite and it looked more fancy advertised than it was. (Don't take the straw offered or it's gone in 4 sips ) The regular version margarita was much more satisfying and tequila selection is vast. My friends enjoyed the coconut margaritas with coconuty toasted rim and pineapple wedge. For dessert we shared the decadent Raspberry Cheesecake chimi $8.50 with a chocolate fudge sauce. Like a too sweet n' rich kids pop tart, we laughed together and ate it all up! I know this is not gourmet cuisine or even that good of a representation of Mexican food, but I enjoyed it. Stopped at Sam Diego's tonight. Sunday 4/26/2026. The back bar was open. I have to say, this was the WORST BARTENDER I have ever experienced!!! I ordered a beer and food to go. No offer of chips/ salsa. When the food came I had to ask for the rest of my change. This kid was totally useless! I heard a ton from people I know about how great this place is. It is a landmark of the Hyannis restaurant scene. It's a shame I never been.... til now. It was a Sunday night so I expected reheated food and sub par service expecting people to go thru the motions in preparations to close in a couple hours.... not the case. The service by Ben F. Was perfect. Never having to have to ask for a refill of my Diet Pepsi or my kids milks. Speaking of kids, their meals were free on Sundays with purchase of adult entrees. We shared the southwest egg rolls. They were hot, slightly crispy outside nice and doughy on the inside without it being undercooked. Ben asked how I wanted my Rio Bravo Steak Tacos, I said "as bloody as they go" Other restaurants when I ask them the same thing end up giving me medium to medium well. Drinks good but food underwhelming. I ordered the fajita quesadillas and it was awful. Chicken and cheese basically. No grilled veggies and no spices. What the hell? Not liking the new menu either. Get it together! Oh and the bathrooms?! The floors are sticky, no light, ceiling fan caked with cob webs and smells terrible. Usually if the bathrooms are gross the kitchen is. Sam's has always been good in the past but do you really want a 3.8 as a score for your food? I gave two stars for our waitress and the drinks. read more

So I've ordered here twice and I like to just get the tacos but I would suggest you omit the cabbage and some of the toppings because the n you get less meat. I got the steak one time and 3 of the tacos only had 1 strip of steak and the rest was filled with the toppings. Chips and salsa are great. Staff and super friendly and I LOVE that you can park in the back of the restaurant and just wait for your takeout order because they have cameras and will see your car. read more

Cape Cod's a unique place. But if you get a hankering for cuisine associated with North America's southwest region, try Hyannis' Sam Diego's Mexican Cookery & Bar. And for affordability, authentic ambiance, and doting service, this spot's a lot cheaper than round-trip air. My wife and I recently hopped off our weary burrito (just kidding, it was a bus) to sample Sam's offerings. Strolling in, after a nice welcome, we gaped at the interior; each room resembles an elegant sidebar in a Tijuana art museum. But since the weather outside more resembled St. Petersburg (Russia not Florida), we asked for the balmy Iyannough Road side. And Michelle, a kind and skilled server, soon brought a heap of tender tortilla chips and then my wife's stellar Appletini and my citrusy Lagunita IPA. (And I must say: these bartenders flash their A game, personable and talented.) As a solid country rock vibe permeated the air, we checked the lunch menu; and suffice it to say, even at $10.95 you still gotta decide. My wife opted for Sam's Other Favorite, a heaping chicken enchilada and sliced beef taco with a mound of the signature Spanish rice. I went off the luncheon grid with a stuffed bean burrito, complete with a bit of the chef's "Giddyup, cowboy" spice. But still okay for this gringo especially with the diced veggies and cheese with rice nearby! Wasn't expecting to like this place simply because I'm a picky eater and why would I have delicious Mexican food in the cape.. but shockingly I really enjoyed my time here. We got the 22oz skinny pomegranate margarita. It was wonderful! So rare to find skinny margarita options so I truly appreciated that. We got the guac appetizer and the guac was fresh and not over seasoned. LOVED the free chips and salsa. Salsa was kind of smoky - very good. We shared the chicken burrito meal because I wanted to also try the ground beef taco. I will say I loved the taco but not the burrito. Personally not a fan of shredded chicken. I prefer grilled chicken. So May be a preference on my end you may enjoy it more. Burrito was soggier than I expected as well. Rice and beans were seasoned well and not over cooked or under (sometimes rice is risky) We also got the house dessert and it was also amazing! Great margaritas for sure! Also a skinny version which I love. They also offer two sizes! I'm a wimp and I always get the smaller one. I'm not going to list all the food because there is too many things I like from the menu. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and if it is busy the bar area is also a pleasant place to sit. I will say my friends and I like to order a bunch of apps and share. I think you should keep going back till you try all the flavors of their margaritas. Just a suggestion! Drink responsibly! I just had lunch here today. Being from New Jersey I have been to many Mexican restaurants, however, this place was exceptional. I had the Tombstone tacos they were delicious, I couldn't believe how tender the steak was and how much steak was in the tacos! The addition of black beans and a scoop of rice made it complete. The flavor was great and not over spiced very well balanced. The margarita was made with fresh lime juice and you could taste the tequila which some places put more lime juice to make it appear strong. The service was great Doug was the server and he did a great job,he was informative and helped with decisions. You could tell they spent a lot of time decorating the interior and exterior of the place (it is huge). The decor is tastefully designed. The prices are very reasonable especially for there specials. Been coming here for over 20 years and decided to stop in after Brazilian grill was too busy and my kids were starving. It was pretty busy so they sat us at a high top near the bar. Service was very slow. The margaritas were tasty and strong which was definitely the only good thing about the visit. I ordered a carne asade chimichanga and it was pretty disgusting, thick dough like some british pub or something...bland melted cheese inside with no beef until halfway through the bland filling thing. The beef was completely tasteless and rubbery. No seasoning on any of their food. My wife's fajita was a bland stack of chicken on unseasoned rice. The kids food was the giant bloated kids taco full of cheese and they couldn't even hold (although they said they like it lol). Expensive as well $120 with tip. I feel like they should do a Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon to get back on track and step up the flavor. I remember this place being good even about 10 months ago. We will not be coming back so disappointed especially after seeing all the great choices on Hyannis Main Street later that night. read more

We were sat in the most uncomfortable wooden booths located at the back of the Restaurant. Waitress took my girlfriend's order and almost forgot to take mine. She ended up leaving a menu on the table for most of dinner. I ordered a Ceaser Salad & Fries for myself, and a bean burrito for my girlfriend. My Ceaser tasted like something you would get from a prepackaged container from stop & shop. The bean burrito tasted like chemicals and gave my girlfriend a stomach ache. The waitress forgot to add my fries to the ticket so I never received them. Waited 10-15 minutes for the check after our meal. Cherry on top was that the pen didn't work so we had to wait another 5 minutes to leave a tip and sign our bill after asking a hostess for something to write with. Will not be going back. read more

This was my second time eating here and it was pretty much the same as the first time. The server was efficient although she did take a little too long to take our drink order. The fajitas were good and the portion size was fine. They do have the free tortilla chips which I noticed that not every Mexican restaurant has now I like the atmosphere because it sort of feels like you are in an authentic Mexican restaurant. WTAF? What a ridiculous experience we had there last night. Ordered some cheese enchiladas for my vegetarian daughter, and just a drink and dessert for us. The drink and dessert arrived fairly quickly. The drink was a non alcoholic mango thing that was sickly sweet and I couldn't finish. The dessert was ok. Then we waited and waited and waited for our daughter's entree- and it kept not arriving. We watched people who were seated after us get their dinners, etc. Eventually the waitress came by and stated that our daughter's entree' had been delivered to the "wrong table" (I should mention here that the place was far from crowded). Waitress was sweet and apologetic so we waited some more. Finally, after a very long time, we asked the waitress to just pack it up so we could leave- she finally gave us our entree' and it was meat- instead of a cheese enchilada we got a beef enchilada. Our daughter had taken a bite of what she thought was a part with beans and got a mouthful of meat. Very upset. Told waitress (again, sweet and apologetic- told us we wouldn't be charged) She went to get someone to talk to us and again we waited and waited- finally gave up and walked out the door. Its ok. Not the best Mexican food, but not the worst. Super loud. Nice servers. OK food. Good chips, but more texmex-y and touristy than something more Mexican. I'm not saying I won't go back, its an ok place to go with friends to hang out. But from what I have read, the food had a heyday and its not now. Fajitas are good. And if you ask for corn tortillas (not typically served with fajitas, but my husband can be a brat) ask them to warm them up or you will get cardboard. Seasoning was good. A classic Tex-Mex tradition that's been around a long time in Hyannis. They have lots of seating inside and a small outdoor patio in the warmer months. They also have a private room for small parties and do a great job hosting these. There are two bars and a Monday-Friday soup, taco and salad bar for $12.95. Not authentic Mexican food. Food is very very sad. The service wasn't bad, and the ambiance was ok. The food was another story, it was beyond disappointing. Refried beans taste like canned beans topped with cheese and the rice is disgusting. The seasoning is by far Mexican. It is just bland chicken no peppers or onion whatsoever. Save yourself the pain. I've been coming to the cape pretty regularly since the spring of 2016. I've had multiple people tell me about SD's. I *finally* made the trip last night. What is concerning to me is a few things. A) we arrived before 4PM and the place was dead/slow. Service was mediocre. I would feel as though since there were so few customers, our server would have been more attentive. After they dropped off the boxes for us to wrap up our leftovers (That I was giving to my dog), it took over 15 minutes for the server to come back and ask us if we wanted dessert... nope, just the check. Would have been nice to have had that question asked when the Togo boxes were dropped. B) I ordered the Dos Burros. I've been to Taco Bell only a handful of times, but the beef burrito I had was abysmal and I would have rather have had Taco Bell instead. I'm wondering if the Chile con queso was blow torched - because there were parts of it that were VERY burnt. Also, looked like a slice of cheese was put on it... it definitely didn't look fresh. (Although, if you read reviews on different websites, the owners definitely comment and assure you things are all made fresh in house). I had one bite of the chicken burrito- and stopped immediately. It was all fat. It was also tasteless, and very greasy. I've had better at public school lunch. C) Concerning about how much sauce was doused on the quarter rack of baby back ribs. Old ribs? What is trying to be hidden? Also, the sauced used heavily reminded me of a spruced up ketchup. Nothing BBQ-Esque. D) having worked in the industry for over 1/2 my life, somethings draw more attention to then others. My plate was warm/hot to the touch. But the company I had - their plate was BEYOND hot. I wonder how long their food sat in the window under heat lamps before my meal was ready/prepared. E) honestly, the only redeeming part of my meal was the rice. But I'm assuming it's boxed/pre made, just because of how it was levels better above the other food I eat. I will NOT be coming back to Sam's. Which is unfortunate due to the proximity of it to me. Tasty, reliable Tex-Mex. Definitely NOT super-authentic Mexican food - and that is, in many ways, a GOOD thing. Because it most definitely IS authentic Tex-Mex - and nothing encompasses this better than Sam's Classic Nachos. Arriving on a piping-hot plate of melted cheese, refried beans, and jalapeños are a delightful melange of toothsome Tex-Mex yummyness! The plate of melted cheese & beans is garnished with a ring of classic tortilla chips(don't worry, they give you extra chips) & adds up to a work of culinary nirvana, a work of Tex-Mex magic!! Nowadays, places like Sam Diego's are unfortunately too hard to find. Replaced with overpriced, trendy restaurants boasting of authentic & "real" Mexican cuisine - these places are often double the price, and their food doesn't taste half as good as the food coming out of the kitchen at Sam Diego's. To the kitchen staff at Sam Diego's Hyannis, you guys are crushing it!! And to my mind, you all deserve a raise for consistently putting out works of Tex-Mex masterpieces to grateful diners. So kudos to you my friends!! And thank you. What else? Oh. I gotta tell ya, if we could do some sorta anonymous "Pepsi Challenge"-type competition, Tex-Mex style, I've no doubt Sam Diego's would absolutely CRUSH the competition. Even the fancier places, too. You won't find better Tex-Mex cuisine anywhere on Cape Cod. So if you're craving some gooey Nachos, Chicken Fajitas, or a well-made margarita, Sam's is pretty much perfection. One small note: you can add shredded chicken(they'll ask)to the Nachos if you want. Personally though, I'd advise against it. In this case, less is more; of course, if you're looking to add extra protein for health reasons, or wanna make the Nachos your full meal, then adding some shredded meat might make sense. But I've tried the nachos with chicken & without, and I have to say, I think the regular nachos, without the chicken, are better. Keep it simple - the flavors already work so well together they don't need anythingelse. But again, if you REALLY wanna add Shredded Chicken(I think they offer Shredded Beef too), the Nachos will still be good. I just don't think they are quite as good. That's all. And again, it's only my opinion. But if you're looking for a chill environment with excellent food, then definitely get yourself to Sam's!! You won't be disappointed provided your expectations aren't too too high. I'm not necessarily a big drinker(although I will on occasion), I do know they make a good margarita that'll get you where you wanna go, so to speak . When you walk in, there's a large bar just past the host stand, along with some tables & chairs. But my favorite bar is towards the end of the restaurant, past the dining room. It has more seats & is brighter. Also, you don't have a ton of foot traffic like you do at the front bar. But both of these options make Sam's a comfortable place for anyone dining alone, which I know for me can sometimes be awkward & anxiety inducing. The way Sam's is set-up makes for a comfortable environment for those who are dining alone. So if you're by yourself & keen to get outta the house, then head to Sam's. You'll enjoy some solid Tex-Mex food for reasonable $$$$, and the bartenders are always friendly & happy to have you there. One final note - and the servers/bartenders will likely wanna lay me to waste for this advice, but I'm gonna say it anyways - don't pay extra for the "good" tequila if you're drinking margaritas. The house tequila, no matter how inexpensive, is still tequila, and unless they're making the mixers in-house with muddled limes & regular sugar, the type of tequila doesn't really matter if you're using a cheap mixer. Also, this is not to say Sam's margaritas are sub-par by any means. I actually like them a lot!! I'm just trying to give good advice on how to save a little extra loot. Now, if you're doing shots of tequila, then DEFINITELY spring for the Espolon or Patron. If you do a blanco, like Patron, ask the bartenders for a splash of lime in with the Patron, then have them shake it vigorously with the lime juice over ice. This will make it as smooth as can be. For what it's worth, I've worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade, and actually HAD to learn this stuff; hopefully this translates to decent advice & a fun night out!! Also, for what it's worth, my only motivation in writing this is to offer an unbiased opinion of one of my favorite restaurants since I was a little kid. And hopefully offer a bit of guidance that will lead would-be diners to a fun night out!! Happy eating & drinking my friends!!
