After reading the other yelp reviews my family and I decided to come here for dinner on a Sunday night. It was very slow, no waiting. The seating is in the form of sofa's, with red oriental lights that had tons of dead flies inside of them right over the tables. The waiter was very pleasant and nice, had nothing to complain about there. But....the food, pretty terrible. The chow mein is literally ramen noodles with some mixed vegetables in it. All of our entrees were barely warm. We had orange chicken and sesame chicken...both very sugary and too crunchy. Panda Express could tower over them as far as authentic taste any day. Been living in El Paso for 6 years and just discovered this little gem! Ate for lunch, their lunch specials are really cheap and you get a ton of food. We ordered the family meal for 13.99 and added the egg rolls. We also added crab rangoon. We chose the bbq pork fried rice (fresh, not hard, and had a smoky flavor), general tso chicken (more chicken than breading) and sauce was to die for. Their hunan beef was flavorful, vegetables were fresh. Their hot and sour soup was also really good (my way of judging Chinese restaurants) Their customer service was great too! Not feeling like cooking, we Door Dashed some food from this place. I got teriyaki chicken, and my wife got chicken lo mein. The app said the food should arrive at around 1755, but Virginia got it here about 10 minutes early. The food was still piping hot, so we started to dig in. The first thing we noticed was the HUGE portions. We had enough for dinner, and more than enough left for lunch the next day. The chicken was very tender, and prepared just right! This is the best place to get Chinese food on the Northeast side of town. The staff is very friendly and I never have to wait long to be seated. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing. The setting looks nice but on closer inspection, it's pretty dirty. The food wasn't all that good, although the appetizers were ok and the service was good. The way to the bathrooms smells like the men smoking in a staff room-gross. The bathrooms are awful. The staff had taken over a center booth, that you have to walk to on your way to your booth, that's covered in empty plates and boxes. I ordered a dish in garlic sauce that was purely made of the plum sauce used for mu shu . Very overpowering. The eggplant was bitter, not at all the Japanese eggplants usually used. As soon as you walk in, the atmosphere is relaxing and soothing. The staff was friendly and seated us immediately. Big, comfy oversized chairs and very clean. The food was prepared quickly and the presentation was appealing to the eye. I had the sesame chicken and my partner had the chicken.lo mein. We also had the crab rangoons for an appetizer. First of all, the seating...I thought people were joking, obviously not. Nice idea, but the rest of the place does not fit the ambiance. I had a coke, came in a can, served from an ice chest behind the bar. I had the Egg Drop Soup...tasted like chicken broth, with bits of egg and chicken pieces...very bland. I also had the General Tso's Chicken. OH MY GOD...the chicken pieces were so crunchy I thought I was gonna break a tooth. It was hot, but clearly frozen, and heated in deep fryer. To start the service was horrible, due to the fact that we had 5 different people attend to us. The lo mein noddles were drenched in sauce as well as the vegetables. It was bland. I don't like Americanized Chinese food. It's is just not my thing but every blue moon I get an itch and like to have some lo mein, spicy Kung pao chicken, and egg drop soup. I checked the reviews and I went with a suggestion from a lot of people: the walnut shrimp. I chose to order directly from the restaurant with free delivery. Order was fast and easy; it came right in time. Food, for what it was, was good. I ordered the lo mein, beef and broccoli, egg drop soup, and the walnut shrimp. The portions are huge so I think I overdid it. We could have ordered one dish and it would've been enough to feed the two of us. I will say that because of how delicious the walnut shrimp is, I will order again sooner than the next blue moon. Trust me on this one; order the shrimp. I think about it often. Mmmm read more

I love this place especially for their prices. I normally order in or take out and get the 13.99 deal ( choose 2 entrees with a choice of fried rice, egg fried rice or BBQ pork fried rice 2.00 extra for 3pc order of egg rolls) anywho. It's always a bushel amount of food. Hubby and I can get three meals out of this! Lol But for my experience today eating in the restaurant. I would say it was mediocre. The egg drop soup was delicious. They did bring out an order of egg rolls on the house(but I did not try it). The food came out promptly, however when she served us our drinks, she kind of tipped it over and slammed in on the table, and happened to spill on me. I wasn't upset, didn't make a big deal, but it just kind of irked me. There were no napkins on the table until after we started eating. Idk if it was just an off day. Again, I love the food, but when I received my order (I ordered orange chicken and fried rice from the lunch special) my rice was basically floating in the orange chicken sauce. I came here with some coworkers and had high expectations. I had Dan Dan noodles but it was diced chicken, not ground as it stated in the menu. It was watery and bland. I hope the owner of the Sam's Restaurant reads my review so that changes are made. I am making this review because I was taken aback on the entire look of the restaurant. The outside of the restaurant instantly gives a person a cringe at how unclean it appears, first impressions are important at least clean that yard up!! Not only does the outdoors look terrible, the interior of the restaurant is looking just as bad. Decor and seating is falling apart and is in desperate need of a face lift. Since the last time I came to town to visit and my elderly parents brought to eat at your establishment 4 years ago because they like the food here, I am not at all impressed by the look of the restaurant, the food nor the service. The server never came to check if we needed any more refills on drinks or if we were lacking anything. In my opinion if you are not interested in the look of your establishment or making sure as an owner that customers are pleased with their food or service then you need to take customer reviews seriously. The food wasn't the problem here. Sure, it's not the best, but the price makes it doable. The service, however, was absolutely terrible. We had 4 different servers. And all of them were lousy. Nobody brought us the crispy chips until we asked. My wife asked for oolong tea but was served jasmine. The soups that are with the meals never made it to our table. To top it off, they served my wife beef when she asked for chicken. I work in the food service industry. It's not rocket science. The cooks have a much harder job than anyone else in the restaurant. But, like I said, they nailed it. The food was good. The servers, though. It was a combination of laziness, lack of attention, and just overall bad work practices. We went there during our vacation on the suggestion of local family that often patronizes this place. Family that has had several bad experiences there, including walking out due to poor and inattentive service. My family is far more forgiving than I am. I will NEVER go to this restaurant again. I was actually introduced to Chinese food when I was stationed in Germany of all places. Anybody who has had Chinese food in Germany knows how loaded in MSG the food is. So bad but so good! Our first venture for some Chinese after returning to El Paso was at PF Changs which was a big mistake. Americanized, msg-free crap. We went to China Star Bistro after reading the reviews here. And it was actually pretty good. The restaurant used to be La Paloma Mexican restaurant. It always looks closed because of the dark tint and the few times we have been in there it was nearly empty, although there are times when I drive by this place and it's packed like crazy. It looks a lot nicer on the inside than I expected it to be (minus the torn up couches which are uncomfortable). The employees are very friendly and we get our food in no time. My only complaint with the food is that I wish they would go easy on the cabbage, especially in the fried rice. But it's not enough to keep me away from this place. Hmmm. The only problem I had was that they put the sweet and sour sauce on the chicken and you have to ask for it on the side. They answered all my questions and they give you a good portion of food. Hands down my favorite restaurant to eat Chinese food. The staff is great, the food is delicious and the pricing is very reasonable.

After a day of cleaning our closets, my wife and I decided to get out of the house and grab a Sunday supper. After the usual waffling about where to go, my wife proposed going to one of the Korean places off of Dyer street. The thought of getting the wonderfully varied tastes of kimchi and perhaps the champon was instantly appealing on this slightly cool evening, so away we headed over to the Northeast side to do the final quibbling on which Korean place to eat in (we vacillate between two of them). This is where the entire plan started to go wrong...apparently there is some agreement between all Korean restaurants to be closed on Sunday...something that for some reason we did not know. So have the kimchi hopes dashed, we decided on the next best thing The Star Bistro. We had eaten in this place before so decided to grab a bite there again. This place is located in what was an Italian place for two minutes, and has the standard ceramic figurines of vaguely Italian looking chefs in front of the restaurant. The inside of the restaurant is very red (one color that you always almost expect in a Chinese restaurant) and interestingly has sofa's instead of chairs, giving the whole restaurant a very loungy feel. Pretty friendly servers sat us down and took our drink orders (two ice waters) and swung by with our waters a short few minutes later. We ordered the scallion cake appetizer along with a cup of chicken sweet corn soup while we perused the menu for our dinner options. A little while later the appetizer with the cup of soup showed up and my wife ordered the vegetarian pad thai and I ordered the spicy garlic pork with extra garlic and we then dug into the appetizers. The scallion cake was nice and crisp and tasty, but a little low on the scallions (truthfully I have made better scallion cakes), but it was still very tasty. The cup of soup on the other hand was very blah. It tasted like a very so so cup of egg drop soup with frozen corn thrown in. The overall effect was a very tepid cup of broth with chunks of chewy egg and cold corn. Not very appetizing, but at least the scallion cake was quite good, Just about 5 minutes later our entrees showed up. The pad thai was made with thin noodles and was kinda brown looking and smelt of 5 spice powder. Not something that you expect in any pad thai. I took a quick bite and it was not exactly like any pad thai I have had, but it tasted okay. My pork dish was very savory smelling and had a nice medley of perfectly crisp tender vegetables (broccoli, peppers, black fungus, water chestnuts, carrots and snow pea pods). This was impressively done since all the vegetables were really obviously sautéed at different times to end up with perfect textures. The pork also was very tender though I would have liked to see a few more strips of pork. The dish was quite well balanced with hints of sweet, salty and savory flavors and not the usual super sweet Chinese that we seem to en d up with in El Paso. While this dish was pretty well made, the rice was a completely different story. The first bowl of rice was pretty crunchy...not al dente...Ccccruuunchy!! This is one of my pet peeves with a lot of Chinese restaurants, not just in El Paso. For such a rice centric culture, they sure do skimp on making a decent rice. Rice in restaurants here tends to be the cheapest rice possible ( yes I can hear people saying what do you want for this price...true dat...but still one can hope) which really contributes nothing to the food experience. Anyway the waiter very quickly brought over another bowl, no change there. I guess someone must have opened the lid of the rice cooker a bit too early and the rice was not steamed thoroughly. Anyway we brought the rice home and hopefully it will rediscover a life as a congee OR fried rice. Overall the place is pretty allright for reasonable Chinese. This does not come close to matching the real stuff, but it is definitely a good "American Chinese" place. Two previous trips have always gotten us well cooked vegetables, a pretty good dish of Singapore noodles and a decent tofu plate. No need to rush over there, but check it out if you are in the neighborhood. read more

I though the sofa and table thing would be cool, but I was so far away from the table I had to sit on the edge. Called back to reorder less than a minute later and they put me on hold 3 times then told me the driver wasn't delivering any more. My daughter returned my plate said it was cold, we were waiting for awhile I went to tell them to cancel my plate then she kept saying she don't get paid enough to deal with people like me. There short staffed. She said I should be patient which we were. Took forever to take our order. Said I came in with an attitude. Used her fingers to talk to me, kept telling me to get out of her face, moved towards me, my daughter came back up and told her she needed to get out of my face the host called my daughter a name and told her to touch her first. Then it escalated, we paid our bill and left. Spoke to the manager he didn't do much said he would take care of the bill, but never said anything to her even though he was standing right next to her, I asked for the owner he told me his name but no number.
