Ate here 3x and never left a review. Today we ordered a cup of clam chowder, crab cake, fries and burger. Hubs changed it to a bowl of chowder so we can share. My cup of chowder came and the waitress apologized because my first order already went through so they'll give him another cup. My crab cake came on top of a dressing that tasted like thousand island with a side of salad. It was perfect. The hubs finally got his cup of chowder but his burger was bland. I didn't taste it but his fries were good. We ate outside and the weather was great. Service was attentive and polite. I'll come back for the crab cake again and will try the $4.50 oyster.

Arguably the best clam chowder in the Bay! The New England clam chowder here really is that good. The other menu items are solid as well. The fish and chips are perfectly fried and crispy. The ocean views from the outdoor patio are perfect for a romantic date or a fun family outing. Service can be a little hit or miss.

This was my first visit here at Sam's Chowder House. The parking lot was 100% full. I dropped off the family and waited in the far left corner for someone to leave. When I walked inside I saw a family looking at their lightly scratched rear bumper and they asked me if I saw anything. I asked the manager Jay to help out that family before they left. Great customer service first impression without me even going inside the restaurant. Thank you Jay for helping out that family. The wait to get called in was around 15-20 mins and i dropped in their little souvenir shop. I met a very helpful and kind person Alex. I picked up a mug and a feelin' crabby shirt for me! Lots of great items here. I'll be back for more. The ambiance was full of sea items. The front main entrance has a fresh lobster tank. The entire building is very clean and organized. Almost 100% full capacity as well. Business is doing great. Finally the food. The best recommendation was from our lovely server Sulem. She was the heart of this wonderful restaurant experience. She went above and beyond to help us out with ordering and customer service. I want to come back and try more foods. The clam chowder being one of them! We enjoyed our meal today. Our favorite was the Aloha. It comes in a sushi and we actually loved it without the rice. Just the sashimi. It was a great first bite of the day. I'll definitely come back with the family again to try more of the menu. Thank you all for such a lovely experience!

Lunch here with mini me a few days before her summer break is over. For our lunch we ordered baked oysters Rockefeller, naked lobster roll, and large new England chowder to share. The food here is consistently delicious and Chandra who helped us was really good and efficient. We're full and happy and we have some leftovers to enjoy too. Iced water and bread with butter are their standard service. We'll be back

I had a reservation and stopped by on a Saturday. Glad I made the reservation. There was a line outside. Restaurant had a lot of seat though. Naked lobster roll was my favorite item. It had a lot of fresh lobster meat. I had Sword fish for the first time in my life. It was delicious. It tasted more like chicken. In fact, it is called chicken of the sea. New England clam chowder was my other item. That was good.

Cool and very popular spot along the water. Had to try it out and glad we did! Very open space inside and an outdoor patio area as well. Super attentive and friendly staff. Had calamari, oysters, and polenta fries to start. All very good. Temperature perfect. We also had the naked lobster roll as well as the dressed roll. I preferred the naked as it was warm versus the cold dressed roll. Naked was toasted roll, soft and buttery and flaky. Others tried the chowder and it was also good. Def return. Tip: make a reservation - people line up outside their doors waiting for it to open.

We came here because a friend was visiting the Bay Area for a few days, and I thought it would be nice to have a meal by the ocean and enjoy the scenery together. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. The weather was beautiful, and the atmosphere was nice, although it didn't particularly stand out to me. There are other waterfront restaurants in the area that I personally find more memorable, but this was still a lovely place to spend an afternoon. The food was delicious. I really enjoyed my soup, the oysters were also tasty, and the wine was excellent. I also liked that the menu offers a wide variety of options, so there's something for almost everyone. The service was perfectly fine as well. It wasn't especially memorable, but it was friendly and everything went smoothly. Overall, I think this is a nice spot if you're looking for good food and a relaxing meal by the water. While it didn't leave a lasting impression on me personally, I still had an enjoyable experience.

After a relaxing day at the beach, I ordered takeout online, and it was exactly what I needed. The clam chowder was served piping hot, loaded with tons of toppings, and absolutely hit the spot! Picking it up from the designated takeout window was quick and easy, but I did notice the interior looked super nice and inviting while I was there. Whether you're grabbing it to go like I did or staying to dine in, this spot is a must-visit. Perfect comfort food by the coast!

I visited with my pup, and since the restaurant doesn't take reservations for outdoor seating, I decided to take my chances after my friend suggested meeting here for lunch. The parking situation was absolutely wild for a Wednesday afternoon. I ended up parking down the hwy and walking over. To my surprise, they had an outdoor table available for the two of us and my dog right away. I also appreciated that they seated me immediately even though I mentioned my friend wouldn't arrive for another 15 minutes. Despite the cool temperatures and wind, the outdoor patio has a beautiful view and made for a very pleasant lunch setting. My friend is gluten-free, and we were happy to see that many menu items were clearly labeled as GF, making ordering much easier. We shared a bowl of Manhattan clam chowder, which was enormous, we couldn't even finish it! We also ordered the roasted petrale sole along with a side of creamy roasted mushrooms. Both dishes were delicious, generously portioned, and perfect for sharing. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, we both enjoyed our lunch and would happily return.

Went because of a coworker's recommendation. First surprise was how crowded it was at 3pm. Our wait was about 40min which ended up being ok since it's on a beautiful beach. Parking lot is supper crowded so we parked on the side of the road. Personally I went looking for local seafood since I just moved here, not knowing this place was catered more towards the New England style. There weren't many local options except for a few fish dishes and oysters which I thought were overpriced. Food, service and ambiance were all great though!

Pretty chill staff. The wait is long and the food is overpriced. Ocean view and 1 minute walk to get to the sand. Live music!

A friend and I were in Half Moon Bay on 6/11/2026, and were a bit hungry. A restaurant that I assumed must be really good is Sam's as the parking lot is always packed, every day that it's open. I arrived a little later than my friend. Once I arrived, he suggested take out as there was a waiting line. I ordered fish & chips. He as well, and also a large white clam chowder. Chicken tenders for his son. We went to the back of the restaurant, outside, where there was seating on bar stools. As always, with all my reviews, I can only speak of my own experiences. With my fish & chips, for $21.95, came 2 pieces of battered fish, and French fries. I was in shock when I tried the fish. No taste. I added the sliced lemon that was provided, and that helped a tiny bit. The French fries were cold. My friend's French fries were cold as well. I didn't want to complain, as my friend paid the $95 for all 3 meals. We both ate about 1/4 of the fries and tossed out the remaining. I'm guessing the other meals must taste better, being the restaurant is packed every day. Just guessing! Neither of us will patronize the restaurant again. Out in the back of the restaurant is a beautiful beach that's definitely worth a visit to.

Very obvious why this place always has long wait. On Saturday night, arriving at 7:40 pm with a large group, our wait time was around 20 minutes but the scenery around the restaurant kept the wait interesting. Food was excellent, view simply great, very good services too. Has kids menu as well. Definitely recommend.

    Yes

    How is the parking arrangement?

As others have said, there are a good amount of parking spaces, but it can fill up and you end up parking on Hwy 1. The earlier you get there, the better the parking, especially for those who have difficulty walking.

How long is the wait for outdoor dining at 12:30 pm on a holiday like Labor Day?

I'm currently staying at the RV park next door and the number of people in the area right now is more than I've ever seen before. I suspect, wait times will be very long

Do you still have happy hour on oysters?

Hi JK, we haven't restarted dollar oysters yet, primarily due to the rising cost of oysters. We hope that will change soon and we can bring it back. Thanks much

We walked in at 11:45 on a Thursday. Deck seating available, inside seating 10min wait.... windows a little tougher 😉

    Are dogs allowed?

I've seen people with dogs there .

Are dogs allowed for outdoor dining?

Yes! There were several and the waiter offered to bring our dog some water.

Are they still offering their $1 oysters/other happy hour specials during COVID?

Hi Brianna, since we are only at around 25% of our regular seating capacity, we are unable to offer some of our specials at this time, such as the $1 oysters. We hope to get back to our regular business and specials soon. Thanks

    Hi, is outdoor seating available?

Yes. And there's plenty of it.

Are you guys open for outdoor dining?

Hi Rosalyn, yes we are! We have a huge back patio area, and have added some additional outdoor space as well. We are open 7 days a week, 11:30-7:30 Mon-Fri, and 11-7:30 Sat-Sun. We take reservations Monday through Friday, and walk-ins only on the…

Two dramatically lit bars are very eye-catching, one upstairs, the other down below. There is something about dining beneath a soaring cupola that is elegant beyond description. Soft music enhanced the mood. My order was BBQ Ribs ($19.00), nominally an appetizer, and a side of coconut rice ($6.00). The ribs were a very generous portion, tender, and glazed with a truly excellent BBQ sauce. Honestly, the glaze was better than I've had in restaurants specializing in ribs. The coconut rice was as good as I could imagine, perfectly steamed, and a generous portion to boot. The combination was mouth watering as well as satisfying. Peruvian beer, specifically Cuzquena Lager was the perfect libation. Karen C. was the server, and she displayed absolutely no characteristics of a Miami Vice villain. She was prompt, accurate and friendly. She did not need an attitude adjustment. The restaurant is a few miles north of HMB, and well worth the drive with a very adequate parking lot servicing the shopping center.
