This is my second ever review (and hopefully my last) since I downloaded Yelp in 2010. This tells you that writing reviews are not in my interest in the daily. However, today I truly felt I had to. I just can't seem to shake it off. I'm a chef who lives in Los Angeles and I frequently drive to Oakland once or twice a month. Upon research, we decided to eat at the Cabin to celebrate Father's Day with my little girl and cousin. Arriving with excitement and our appetites in all its glory, the place was packed, and expected a reasonable long wait, and waited over an hour. While waiting, I managed to visit the donut shop and pursued with 3 cups of coffee, read the menu in advance, and some series of convo with my cousin. Over an hour after, we finally sat down and immediately ordered our long anticipated and already decided meal. 30-35 min later our food finally arrived to our table. I ordered the roasted vegetables and egg dish and my cousin ordered the "Braised Pork with Collard Greens on the Side." What I got instead was a plate of lonely greens, under dressed salad with over easy egg (when I ordered over medium) and my cousin with a collared green "soup" with a single piece of pork meat. Asked the waiter for more meat for what it's worth, and got more greens with some pork meat. Immediately, we just wanted to leave. There is nothing worse that forcing our selves to finish our $30 meal so we can just pay and leave and never come back. Wow!! Apparently I wrote the pants off this review and Yelp says they salute me. Sorry Sam's. Today I had to find time and just had to. read more

Sam's is open for takeout and delivery during the pandemic. I had French toast today, along w/ bacon and scrambled eggs, while Alan had the French toast sandwich w/ walnuts, bananas, blueberries and strawberries. I had fruit instead of potatoes, and wheat toast, which went in the freezer for later. They had blueberry-lemon zest scones, so we bought 4 for the freezer. They have pick up and ordering well organized. In both cases you go to the backyard rather than into the restaurant itself. Signs direct you. I called in the order, but you can walk in and then wait while it's prepared. There are socially distanced tables and chairs set up on the back patio for waiting. This place is stupid AWESOME and yes it's worth the 20 minute wait! Came here with the hubby last saturday morning at around 11AM and this place was jumping. There must have been about 6 parties in front of us waiting, but I didn't care I wanted to see what the hype was all about. After waiting 20 minutes we were seated and immediately greeted by our lovely waitress. We started with coffee and fresh squeezed OJ, which cost almost $4. Then my hubby ordered the french toast waffles, which were amazing and I ordered scrambled eggs with their homemade chicken apple sausage and I was pretty flippn' impressed. Our total bill not including tip came to $21, which was pretty inexpensive compared to most places in the area and it was a good start. I'm most definitely coming back in the next few weeks and can't wait to try some of their more unique dishes. The vibe of this place is relaxed and cool and the food was fresh and super delicious and I highly highly recommend it! It's a 2 thumbs up for SLC!!! read more

This place always blows my mind and brings me back home. The fried chicken is incredible (especially the dipping sauce), and that's coming from someone who is from the south and grew up on comfort food. The grits are some of the best I've had, eggs are cooked perfectly, and the staff is all really incredible and friendly. They've done a great job with the overall experience here. The best news? [Waiting time] Expect to wait an hour at peak on weekends. [Atmosphere] If you are claustrophobic, this place is not for you. Also not for large groups. [Food] I had collard greens and pork with porched eggs. Not so special and flavorful. Coffee was good! No alchohol served, means no mimosa or bloody mary. [Service] They are ok. I've been trying to go to Sam's Log Cabin for a while. The lines are incredibly long on weekends - I've gone a couple of times around 10ish on Sundays, and the wait is 1.5 to 1.75 hours long. Wow. I don't think I can wait that long for brunch....and I'm not sure any brunch could really be worth that. BUT, I finally ate at Sam's on a weekday at around 9:30 a.m. and there was no wait at all. Perfection! We ordered the cranberry scone to share (delicious), and I got the corned beef hash and eggs. There were so many things I wanted to order....but alas, too much good stuff to eat and not enough time. The portions are huge, and I ended up taking my corned beef hash and eggs home...and eating it for breakfast for the next two days. I really enjoyed my experience at Sam's Log Cabin. The outdoor seating is really nice and even though it was cold outside, the heaters made it really comfortable and less crowded than the indoor seating areas. What made our experience stand out was the great service and genuine staff. Everyone was really nice and that's awesome. We ordered the house made corned beef hash with cornbread, and the biscuit sandwich (substituted bacon for the pork sausage patty) with a side of their special soup which was potato and thyme. The food was decently good and definitely satisfying, but I've definitely had better breakfast/brunch elsewhere. We both agreed that the potato thyme soup was unfortunately not very good but everything else was okay! read more

We've been to Sam's a couple times before COVID and it was always a nice breakfast/brunch spot with a large backyard patio space. We learned that they just re-opened for outdoor dine-in so went today and it was just as wonderful as before. They have moved the outdoor tables all greater than 6 ft apart, all two tops or max 4 tops, but it still felt like a warm and serene outdoor dining space, even with the slightly chilly morning (they have heat lamps, don't worry). The staff were all super friendly, properly masked and service was on point, attentive, while still giving everyone the physical space required. The food was delicious, always recommend their daily scones and the collard greens actually made me really happy to eat green leafy vegetables for breakfast. read more

I love breakfast. It's a paradigm that I have pursued since my single 20's days with unreasonably fabulous friends in Seattle. This is a truly good breakfast spot. And for the not single anymore parenting years, it works well because of the nice backyard waiting and other neighborhood kids you'll run into. The food is really good! It's good and that's good. Why then, Jane, why only 4 stars? It's really 3.5 but you can't see that, but I am withholding a star + because I think they are ignoring the vegan peoples. As a vegan gal, I've got exactly one choice here. And it's pretty darn good, but it's singular. What about some tofu situations on the menu? Some non dairy yogurt? The yam things are good, maybe stock some non butter butter!? We are locals who have loved this place for a long time but can't come as much without a few more choices. Breakfast was delicious and the service was amazing. There was a bit of a wait but it was worth it. We tried the raspberry and almond pancakes, corned beef hash, huevos rancheros, Mac n cheese, and the corn chowder. Everything was tasty from start to finish. The portion sizes are quite large. We so love Sam's! It really doesn't need to get any better than this place! Perfectly quirky and unconventional, quite amazing food, and some of the best restaurant staff around. These guys really care about doing it right. The food is delicious and fresh and is mostly (if not all) organic. The atmosphere and seating situation is a dream, especially during COVID, with the great outdoor space. Beyond the great food, our favorite thing about this spot is how great the folks are who run and work here. They're definitely a cut above. We come to Sam's sometimes weekly! Sam's distinctive exterior is probably its best advertisement. Regular drivers up and down San Pablo will surely notice its unusual appearance, and finally be tempted to go someday like I did this morning, when I had a hankering -- and time -- for breakfast. I ordered the Scramble Special with sourdough toast and potatoes. The potatoes were great, mixed with fresh and zesty red peppers and green onions. The egg was scrambled with zucchini and chunks of chicken apple sausage, which delighted me with its distinctive anise(?)-tinged flavor. (Actually, the sausage tasted just like Asian marinated tea eggs!) My food covered the entire plate (see picture). Very lovely presentation, and I appreciate the fruit on the side which was added both for dietary balance and color. My boyfriend was craving pancakes, so he got two of them, along with scrambled eggs and apple bacon. By the time he was done with the eggs and bacon ("meat candy," he says), he only had room for about half the pancakes -- which is a surprise, because usually, he can EAT. He also had a small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice (luscious color, sweet and real) and we both had coffee (refilled once). The one woman running the dining room at noon was very nice and prompt. The music playing at the time (St. Germain, I think, an album I haven't heard in a few years) wasn't what I expected from a place decorated with vintage cowboy art, rusty eggbeaters hanging off the ceiling, and a metal stag silhouette coat hanger on the wall, but it was a decent pick which added to the cozy, laid-back atmosphere. The total came to almost $30 before tips. Maybe it's the Midwesterner in me talking, but I don't think breakfast should be the most expensive meal of the day. I've come to grips with the apparent fact that a $4 breakfast doesn't exist around here (except maybe at McDonald's). Since I couldn't even finish what I was given, I'm not asking for *more* in terms of larger portions, but I think it's fair to want more bang for my buck. Please don't misunderstand -- this was a damn fine meal, and kept me going well up to dinnertime, but it was hard to digest its 'value'. Park in the street, but you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot. DON'T park in the adjacent lot, or someone WILL run out of the office and yell at you! read more

The corn cakes pancakes are incredible. I enjoy a pancake every now and again but usually skip sweet breakfasts but these corn cakes have an wonderful texture and soft sweetness that I loved. The corn beef hash on the side was the perfect partner. My wife raved about her dish as well although I have no idea what she got, I was too focused on my taste buds! I live in the East Bay but had no idea that this place existed until a friend from NY state who was staying in Albany during her visit told me about it. We went there for a late breakfast on a weekday and it was just the right place to enjoy a delicious, un-rushed meal while catching up with an old friend. Seating was outside only, but comfortable on a particularly cold day in February with the heat lamps on. I had a scramble special which was exceptionally good. Came here on a warm Sunday morning and was seated outdoors in the back immediately. Yay to no wait! The decor is amazing; very old-fashion cabin/lodge feel, serves their name right. Also, there is a large open space in the back with a few peculiar-looking handmade benches for those just want to chit chat with a cup of latte.. Or their amazing ENDLESS COFFEE! I had their apple pork loin and pork belly sandwich with a side of pear and lettuce salad. I immediately fell in love with their housemade dressing.. It was a fruity poppyseed dressing. It was very interesting. My sandwich had a nice crunch because of the crispy pork belly. The meat was a bit too salty for me, but.... It was a brilliant idea to have spread some of that sweet salad dressing into my sandwich! The sandwich wasn't oily, so that's a plus. I nearly forgot to mention, you can't go wrong with their $2.50 thanksgiving endless coffee. The atmosphere is nice. If there is a long wait you're seated in the back patio area which is large and you can serve yourself a cup of coffee. Most of the servers are very friendly. The food is fresh and there are many organic and healthy options. However, most of the plates here lack some more flavor. Woah, my mom was not kidding, the fried chicken here is NEXT LEVEL! I wish I had for the ingredients because its such a healthier alternative to the way fried chicken is typically made. But this place is cute, affordable, and BUSY in the mornings, so make sure to get there early to put your name on this list if you plan on coming with a big party (big meaning 4-6 people, they probably couldn't fit more if they wanted). My family's loved this place for years. We'd happily wait an hour for a table in 40 degree temperature However, recently we have found the service to be terrible. The last three times we've had the same waitress. We thought it might be an isolated incident but no, she is just horrible. She never says anything to us. Not good morning. Not even if we want ketchup or Tabasco with our breakfast. And we never get a refill on coffee. In fact, after dropping off our food she does not check on us, ever. This time she got my cappuccino order wrong and my biscuits and gravy were stone cold. In a world where restaurants and services are going out of business it seems like we should all be working harder to make things right. Too bad Sam's doesn't understand that. Delicious ingredients, affordable prices, coffee while you wait in a comfortable waiting area. I had the basic breakfast which consists of two eggs, potatoes, sourdough toast and bacon. This is a hole in the wall breakfast joint and if you are a large person it may feel a bit cramped. Remember to put your name down on the list in the front entrance first before going to the back waiting area. You will probably have to wait to get in, but it's worth it. read more

Their are times where your just to lazy to get out of bed and make breakfast.. Today was that day for me. So we decided to head over to SAMs log cabin. It was a cold crisp day, with the seating in the back patio with outdoor heaters and a warm cup of tea just made it a perfect morning..... We order banana walnut pancakes for little guy, scramble special, biscuits w/ gravy and my all time favorite fried chicken made perfectly battered, tender, juicy and flavorful with a side of dipping sauce! Horrible wait! We came for breakfast and were seated for lunch. We were "next" 3 separate times on the list to be seated. We were a party of 4 people, and were told that a party of 3 and a party of 5 (both of whom came after us) would be seated first because they better fit the table for 8. We waited an additional 20 minutes after that before being seated. What makes this worse is that they have the space to seat more people. They have more square footage allocated to waiting to be seated then they do for being seated. Food was nothing special, if you have eaten at any diner ever (including Denny's) then you have had food just like this. Sam's Log Cabin is a li'l restaurant that serves up some pretty standard breakfast fare with an occasional twist (nothing too crazy, though). I appreciate a joint that makes a lot of things from scratch, especially one as small as this place. Because the restaurant is so small, the wait times here can get pretty atrocious. I arrived just before 10:30am on a Sunday and waited an hour for a table - at least there's a nice patio where you can wait. Coffee is available, but you do have to pay for it. I got huevos rancheros, while my friend got corned beef hash. The corned beef was remarkable - I should have ordered something more substantial and hearty, but mine was still pretty tasty. For how long I waited, I expected something a little more spectacular, but that probably was just from what I ordered (server's rec). Still, I'd give this place another shot! read more

Worth the wait. Great variety of foods and everything made perfectly. Homemade corn beef hash is undeniably some of the best you'll ever had. Corn bread, pancakes and biscuits are light and fluffy. My favorite breakfast place! Great food, good quality, and staff are friendly. I always get scones and special scramble but since me and my partner don't eat red meat that much anymore, they were able to switch the meat to something else, which is very accommodating. read more
