I almost always check Yelp before trying a new restaurant, but I was out running errands nearby, got hungry, and decided to give this place a chance. The first thing I noticed was that there wasn't a single customer inside. For a restaurant located next to a busy Walmart Neighborhood Market, this should be a high-traffic location. That was my first red flag. When I walked in, the bell rang, and instead of greeting me, I heard the employee yell something from the back. He sounded irritated that someone had come in. After waiting a few minutes, he finally came out to take my order. If your restaurant has no customers, you'd think you'd be happy to see one. I ordered the fish and chips and a Cobb salad. The fries were actually good, but the fish looked and tasted like frozen fish sticks I could have made at home. It had no flavor or seasoning. Then came the Cobb salad. I order Cobb salads often because they're usually hard to mess up, but this was honestly the worst-looking Cobb salad I've ever been served. The "cheese" looked like sliced sandwich cheese, and the meat looked like chopped lunch meat instead of the traditional ingredients you'd expect in a Cobb salad. The only positive was that the lettuce was fresh. As a first-time customer, I left disappointed, and unfortunately, I won't be returning. I don't know if the owners read their Yelp reviews, but I genuinely hope they do. This business has a great location and the potential to attract a lot of customers. Better customer service and higher-quality food could make a huge difference. First time customer and definitely the last. I left a note asking for my hamburger plain, but it came with everything on it. I even have proof in black and white that I asked for it plain -- and proof doesn't lie. Then the guy tried claiming they don't even have an option for extra cheese... yet I paid $1.00 each for extra cheese. So clearly, that option exists. What makes it worse is the note I left wasn't even asking about the cheese issue -- I was talking about something completely different. I checked the reviews on Yelp. I was so disappointed when I got there. I felt as if I was stereotype and spoke to in a demeaning and dismissive manner. He wouldn't allow us to order what was stated on the menu. When I asked for a sauce I was told in a very abrupt and harsh manner"it's in the bag". When asked where we going to take it for here or to go we stated that we would take it to eat in. Extremely surprised look and the word, "HERE??" AS IF A PERSON OF COLOR OR A DIFFERENT CULTURE, WAS NOT ALLOWED TO SIT THERE AND EAT. I was shocked, angry and extremely insulted. Went here on coworkers recommendations and so glad I did! It is a Mom and Pop shop. Walked in, gave pop my order, a small 6" cold roast beef sandwich with no mustard, extra mayo and a bag of chips, for under $10! Like 5 minutes later, momma comes out with my sandwich. My food was fast and accurate. The bread was so soft and moist, the roast beef was tasty, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions where fresh. Mayo and subway sauce was good. The filling size was comparable to Subway's, which I like, I don't need to eat a huge sandwich. This sandwich made me full. So bottom line.... Good food, good service, and good price. This place is awful and I really wouldn't recommend. The guy doesn't want to be there and it shows in the service and food! I wish I took a picture before I threw that foolish they called a steak and cheese out. I asked for a steak and cheese, double meat and what do I get? The complete opposite! He filled that loaf of bread with cheese, grilled vegetables and 9 pieces of steak! I really thought I was being pranked. Don't let me get started on there " famous" buffalo wings. Great! Amazing!! Delicious subs!!! A friend told me about this Sam's Sub Shop as I was talking about childhood memories. My dad & I used to go to one in Roseville. He would get the Nacho Steak Sub and I would get a cheeseburger. 25 years later, this is not the same location or owners, but a similar delicious flavor! Surrounded by many businesses, SSS is in a huge parking lot. I walked into a shop where covid safety regulations are still practiced. All the tables pushed aside because indoor seating is not available. They have a huge menu board on the wall with many items to choose from. Cold subs, hot subs, burgers, sides, and fountain drinks. My dad & I got a Nacho Steak Sub and my friend got the Steak combo. We added on one side of curly fries because we just wanted a taste and knew our hot subs would fill us up. Our food was cooked fast and tasted delicious! The curly fries didn't make it home, lol! Our subs tasted great! As a personal preference, we think next time, we will ask for the buns to be toasted. While most of the items told us exactly what was in them the BLT&TA doesn't mention it has mayonnaise on it which is something we don't eat in my household, and since I didn't know until I got home it was to late to call and get it replaced. They have an good-looking, extensive menu. I tried the chicken sub with grilled onions and peppers--it was delicious with fresh, well-prepared ingredients--and it was reasonably priced. The service is not super friendly, but it is fast. As a new customer, it would have been nice to be told where the condiments are without having to hunt them down. The place is clean and the atmosphere is okay. They do need a better lock on the bathroom door, and their fountain drink area should have ice available. Overall, the location and the memory of my delicious sandwich will get me back there for lunch. read more

Sam's sub shop is a small whole in the wall in Arden. It is located in the shopping center next to the Walmart grocery store. There is plenty of parking. When I walked in, this restaurant had quite a few customers. When you walk in, you would initially be unimpressed. The place lacks nice decor and has old furniture. Their menu doesn't look that special. But when you try the food you will be surprised. I ordered the New York style wings and the prolly cheese steak (small). Support local businesses! That's exactly what I do wherever and whenever possible. And "Sam's Sub Shop" is definitely no exception. I've heard about this place for quite some time. However, they just don't get the type of love they deserve. Especially a family-owned and operated sandwich shop that has been around for over a decade and less than 100 reviews??? C'mon people, stop supporting the bigger chains! Sandwiches? Check Chicken Wings? Check Cheesesteaks? Check Located directly on Marconi Ave. (and adjacent to Fulton Ave.) in the heart of the Arden/Arcade neighborhood of Sacramento, Sam's is definitely a little hidden gem. The best way to find this place is that they are within walking distance to the Walmart Neighborhood Market while sharing the same parking lot as Burger King. I came here around 12:00pm on a Saturday. You would think it would be slammed with hungry customers. Surprisingly, there was only one other customer enjoying their lunch and no other customers in line. The layout of this place is small, yet effective. The inside is very no-frills and almost reminiscent of a 1980's-style decor complete with faux-wood trim and tables and chairs that you'd find at a vintage faire. However, they do offer a generous condiment bar, self-serve fountain machine, a TV for viewing, and restrooms towards the back of the restaurant. But don't let the plain look fool you as this place has a generous menu with very well equipped prices. And this is why Sam's is a winner in my book. They have some of the best prices on everything! You can get a variety of 6" hot & cold subs (as well as a Philly cheesesteak) for $4.59, a corn dog for $1.99, a cheeseburger for $3.99, and even fish & chips for a mere $4.99! Additionally, their famous New York-style Buffalo chicken wings are just $7.59 for a 10-piece! In other words, Sam's has far lower prices than major restaurant chains such as Subway, McDonald's, and Wing Stop. Since I was in the mood for a sandwich, I settled with a 6" size of their "Meat Combination & Cheese" (for $4.99). This included four types of meats; Italian salami, Danish ham, turkey, and roast beef. This included provolone cheese complete with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayonnaise, mustard, and their signature submarine dressing. And this was also packed in a soft Italian roll. Once adding chips & a drink, my grand total came to just under $10. Since there was nobody else ordering, my sandwich arrives in about 3 minutes! I do have to say, they were very generous with the portions. The meat slices hit the spot as you definitely get your moneys' worth. And this was just a small 6" sandwich! You can also order the medium 9" and large 12", respectively. Many other Yelpers also raved about the wings so there will definitely be a return visit here soon to try those out. Overall, "Sam's Sub Shop" is an exceptional independent restaurant that did not disappoint. They also have generous hours being open Monday-Friday from 10:30am-8pm and Saturday from 11am-8pm. They are, however closed on Sundays. They also offer phone-in orders as well as fax orders. And even a few beers on tap. So if you're looking for a place that won't burn a hole in your wallet, I'd definitely give Sam's a try. My rating, a perfect five stars. read more

This place is possibly invisible. I live a mile from the place, I go to the neighboring businesses regularly, and yet I had never seen or heard of the place until yesterday. I was scoping for wings on Yelp and this place came up. The place is a dive. Decor is minimal. They have a couple of menu boards and a medium-size television and that's about it. Me and my 12 year old went there because we were craving wings. We wanted to try some place we had never tried and this was it. We each got a 10 piece. The boy got BBQ and I got Hot. We both enjoyed the wings. In fact, the hot wings were the best I've had in a while. They were just slightly hotter than your average hot wing, but pleasantly so. We all know that wing prices are through the roof lately so getting 10 wing sections for 11 bucks was quite a bargain. I recommend giving this place a try if you are a wing fan. read more

I decided to check out the reviews after eating here last week and saw that my experience was not an isolated one. I came here specifically for the Cheese Steak sandwich and also ordered the "Railroad" which is the BLTAT...whatever, onion rings and bacon nacho fries. Cheese Steak was dry, barely had any cheese and a HUGE doughy bun. Not good. Railroad was possibly the worst sandwich I've ever ordered. Same bun as the cheese steak, ONE SLICE of turkey, 3-4 pieces of bacon, and paper thin avocado slices. Bacon nacho cheese fries were served deconstructed in the to-go bag and was missing the bacon. Onion rings were decent. I really WANT to support small businesses, especially right now, but you also deserve to get a decent meal for your money. read more

The PHILLY CHEESESTEAK is my favorite hot sandwich and this non-chain sub shop makes it best. The bread is always soft, the condiments are generous, the steak and swiss cheese (my choice of cheese), along with peppers, onions, mushrooms is mouthwatering. They also have my favorite sides: fried zucchini and mushrooms. Only takeaway, i want more of the house ranch for home! I need to ask if i can buy a mayo jar full because it blows the bottled stuff apart. They also make their chicken wings taste superior to anything i make, trying to crack the code, no luck so far. I really hate writing bad reviews but I really don't want anyone else to spend their hard earned money on something that just is not a good deal. Here's why: 1. My husband got the "Railroad" which was literally one (I am not kidding) slice of turkey on each half and two or three 2-inch long thin strips of bacon (and this was on a 9" sub) and 4 tiny slices of avocado that were literally sliced thinner than I've ever seen an avocado be sliced before. The one slice of American cheese was also only about 1.5 mm thick. My husband called it the "cheapest sandwich" he ever had and he wasn't talking about the price. It was actually comical. 2. I had the meatball sub which had cheap provolone on it (you could tell because melted it was almost transparent and it didn't taste like anything) and flavorless sauce. I put a ton of salt on it and ate it without the bread because... 3. The bread is weird. It's almost cake-y it's so spongy and thick and without flavor. I don't even know what it would be called. I feel like I'm being super mean here and I hate that but what I am writing is honestly true. And we actually got two sandwiches each to have for later because we thought they would be good based on all the reviews. So there went $40+ since it's just not good. I don't even want to try the second sandwich. Back to the review... 4. The wings.... meh. Soggy skin. Sauce was decent but we got 15 and I basically had to beg for an extra blue cheese dressing. It came with two little ones. Little. 5. The blue cheese dressing was so watered down it just dropped off the wings. 6. About the service... if someone orders $40+ worth of food, asking for an extra tiny portion of dressing should not be met with begrudging grumpiness. We were polite, we tipped when we ordered, so I just don't know... We feel ripped off. And I only write reviews for really good or really bad situations since anyone can have a bad day. But this was not a bad day since it was about how they portion things and the actual quality of the food. And I still wouldn't write anything bad, especially about a local small business, except that I don't want anyone else to spend money they work for on something so obviously not worth the money. 7. I just checked my second sandwich which was supposed to be a veggie but with provolone and "extra" American (which I did actually pay extra for). One thin slice of each on each half. The provolone is so thin that you can see the tomato through it!! See the photos. Anyway, this has been long enough, way longer than I expected to write but... wow... I have to post a bad review about one of my favorite places to get food, sadly not any more!! I've been going there for years I've taken at least 15 or more people there thru the years. I always order the large Philly steak an cheese because it was stuffed to where the meat was literally falling out it more than filled the bun. And I could eat half for lunch and the other half for dinner or lunch the next day and I could have all the pickle slices I wanted because they were in a big ol bucket and they were free! there were containers you could serve yourself, and I noticed when I went there in January that the weren't as full of meat as they used to be! There was more bread at the end of the sandwich still I went there because it was good and the crinkle fries and the pickles made up for the lack of meat and cheese. But today I ordered the same large steak & cheese and the fries. I figured I would get the pickles when I picked up the order I had 2 other orders with mine so more pickles right? Wrong, not only did you have pay for pickles the prices went up!! (the second time in my years of going) and it was the WORST sandwich I had in the history of going. The meat and cheese was alot less than before alot less there was so much bread!!! And the meat was burned!!! Never before was it burned it was soft and enjoyable. I could see it was burned when I took it out the wrapper. So prices raised, burnt meat, less meat, and pay for pickles that was free all the years I went there, it was so bad I gave the other half to my dog!! my friends sandwich had big ole chunks of tomato it looked like the ends of the tomato they both removed them from thier sandwiches and they had different sandwiches A Pastrami and a Sam's special I will NEVER go there again or take anyone there. I am sadly disappointing I have been going here for years. Stop by last night and ordered a French dip for me.. The bread was like a dry cakey cheap bread.. Seem like day or 2 old. Not much meat on it & the sauce tasted terrible .. Also, Order Turkey sandwich for daughter she complained of bread being very dry.. This USED to be my favorite sandwich place.. But sorry "Jersey Mike's" is a lead now .. I'D rather pay the extra money to be satisfied and happy with fresh food..
