I eat in here pretty much on a weekly basis. Samurai is located close to a movie theater and lots of retail. The hibachi is wonderful and reasonably priced. The sushi is very americanized but delicious, and they offer an all you can eat deal from time to time, which I highly recommend. Service is prompt and I rarely have to wait more than a few minutes to be seated and served. If you're out shopping at costco or target or whatever..pop in here for lunch. I'm not sure why this place got rated so well. Went in with some coworkers for lunch. My portent of things to come was that it was 12p and there was only one couple in the entire restaurant. We sat down around a hibachi grill and, after ordering our drinks, we asked the server to turn up the heat because it was honestly FREEZING in the restaurant. I think it was warmer outside (in November!). She said no and said the place would get too hot with the grill on. So we sat and froze until we got our appetizers. A few other people ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer, the crab rangoons and some kind of steak maki roll. The coconut shrimp were dissapointing and the sauce was sickeningly sweet. The crab rangoons were horrendous. The waitress had warned they made them a little sweeter than normal, but this was disgustingly sweet. The steak roll thing was... eh. Ok. We ordered hibachi lunches and most of it was ok and edible. The vegetables were decent and the fried rice was good. Of course, with the amount of butter they put in, it better be good! I ordered the shrimp meal and I refused to finish the shrimp because they were horribly overcooked. It was like eating some kind of shrimp-flavored rubber. I left most of it there. The staff was ok. Hibachi. Japanese Steakhouse. Dinner and a show. It's not that hard to screw that up. Or is it? How many times can you see an onion turned into a volcano? Or a onion into a locomotive puffing out steam? I personally believe these type of restaurants need to step it up and try to get mors attention back to the food. A small party of 4 came here for my birthday.. the place was less than full.... so I completely understand why it was less than lackluster. It was also a Thursday evening. The food? Was nothing too tasty. The two other hibachi places in the metro Detroit area have a little bit of a step up on this place as the flavor of the food and the cooking 'show'. Portions of course are dependent on the size of the people at your table... but you can easily leave this place very full. I don't know though... there was just something lacking from the cooking display, and our meal that just left a sour taste in my mouth for having to pay for an over priced fancy birthday meal. Zero stars isnt an option, or that would be what I would give. Arrived at 5:30, party of 2, we were seated immediately at a hibachi grill. Waiter took 10 mins to come take our drink order. Drinks took another 10 mins to arrive at which point he took our dinner order. We were the only people seated at the table and he said the chef would be out soon. 5 minutes later the hostess sat 7 other people at our table! The waiter took another 10 mins or so to come take their drink orders, and another 15 mins to deliver their drinks and take dinner orders for the newly sat patrons. So we have now been at the table for 45 mins, still no chef. Another 15 mins goes by and he brings the additional 7 their soups, salads and appetizers. So we are now an hour in......waiting! 15 more mins goes by still no chef! We chose to leave at this point only to find out the waiter never rang in the order so the chefs didn't even know we were waiting for food. The best part when we went to the host stand to ask for our check, the waiter came up and handed us a bill for the food as well!! Sorry not paying for food we didn't get. The manager was standing right there and asked is everything ok? I said no it's not and started to explain, middle of explaining something else in the restaurant caught her eye and she abruptly walked away!! So we will not be going back. read more

In the middle of a strip mall off Haggerty, not that noticeable from the road. Its a bigger place once inside, but it;s done up in early American Japanese style. We came for sushi, and that's what we got. They have a good selection of rolls and options, numbering 50-60 - different combinations. Not to many exotic options, but if you liked Tuna, fresh water eel, shrimp or salmon then you can have a field day with your options. The one downside of the restaurant, and only the 3 stars was the services was slow. First there was only one sushi chef for a Friday night. The sushi was good and fresh, but it took over 40 minutes to prepare. The other negative was the wait staff wasn't as helpful/pleasant as they should have been. We had been lunch regulars at Samurai, and it had been a reasonably priced, tasty hibachi/sushi destination for a while. Not after today's experience. The owners have clearly lost interest, where they used to be present they are now absent and as a result this place has been going downhill for years. Once you are seated and order taken, the staff disappear for 10-15 minutes. To get drinks refreshed requires one to scout around the restaurant, in search of a server. On today's expedition out through the bar and into the back I discovered why we were being ignored - the server was in the kitchen, looking at his phone and SMOKING. In the KITCHEN. The food overall was really good but I would not advise going there if you have a shrimp allergy. About half the menu had food with shrimp. The service however was a completely different story. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes for the bill and the restaurant wasn't even busy. About 20 minutes is we asked another waiter. This waiter ended up not coming until 5 minutes after we paid the bill. The original waiter ended up at the sushi bar completely forgetting about us. The table behind us also ended up waiting and hour for a lobster roll. Overall, the service was awful. And the food was good. read more

We ordered from door dash and wasn't impressed at all. $15 for a tempura udon that was lacking flavor. Also when packing take out you should always separate the noodles from the soup to keep it from getting soggy. Rookie mistake here. Went in to SSH for our anniversary dinner. We have been seriously jonesing for some good sushi! We sat at the sushi bar (where you always get better attention of the chef), and ordered several different items. We started off with an ice-cold Sapporo in frosted glasses, side salads with excellent ginger dressing, and the chef made us a secret free appetizer that was a salad with different pieces of sashimi, octopus, lobster, roe, caviar, and rice noodles. It was delicious and looked as good as it tasted! Next we got a "sushi for 1" which came with two pieces each of yellowtail, whitefish, tuna, salmon, and a tuna roll. It also had an extra serving of Mackerel, and we added two each of Ebi & Hotategai (which were fabulous!!!!). Everything was of the highest quality and we were VERY pleased. We then ordered a "terminator roll" which is Spicy lobster inside & cucumber inside then topped with avocado with chef's spicy sauce on top. It was so good we ordered another! By this time we were stuffed, so we had to call it a night. I'm already thinking about the next time we can go there! The sushi chef was VERY nice and professional. The waitress was a bit less so (I think she was put out that we were sitting at the sushi bar). Overall it was a great experience! read more

I had a taste for Hibachi without the Benihana wait so I tried Samurai. There was only one other couple in the restaurant so we weren't seated in the Hibachi section. I ordered teriyaki shrimp which came with soup and salad. There's an up charge for fried rice...not chicken, just fried rice rather than steamed white rice. The portions were great but I suspect the food was already prepared, it lacked a fresh taste. The rice was well over cooked as were the noodles that accompanied my husband's meal. Last time we came here was 6 months ago. Our most recent visit was terrible. We walked in, and waited 10 minutes for someone to greet and seat us (even though there was employees sitting on their phones nearby), and placed our order. We constinuously asked for and made sure that he put extra teriyaki and sriracha sauce in our food, and he did not. I then was told he was going to bring me those as sides and never got them. The steak was way overcooked. The portion sizes have also decreased tremendously and the waitresses are clueless. The best thing was the water. read more

Ok, so updating my review to a 5 star based on my most recent experience. My boyfriend and I went here for lunch on Monday to celebrate the fact that I finally found a job near him (going to migrate from Illinois). So we were both super excited and hungry. The hibachi room was mostly empty, there were two guys finishing up a business lunch, but they left about 10 minutes after we got there. It was great being just the two of us in the room. I got the hibachi scallop lunch and the bf got the hibachi beef lunch. I also tried the Pineapple Surprise, which is a delicious drink that I need to recreate at a party. The salad and soup was yummy, as usual. (Though I do have an obsession with ginger). The chef came out and said he was new. He seemed a bit frazzled, and had to run back twice to refill different bottles on the cart. He chatted with us a bit as he cooked, and that was nice. He was happy and seemed a bit excited to cook for us. He cooked everything magnificently. Seriously. It was the best hibachi cooking I've had in years. It beat every other time I visited Samurai. My scallops were great, the rice was amazing, I devoured it asap, and the veggies were still crisp. The bf was also very happy with his steak. I didn't even mind the fact that we didn't get the mustard or ginger sauce put out. The food didn't need it. Oh happy day. So I think I'm just going to frequent Samurai on Monday lunch shifts because this man made me so happy. I even liked the ginger salad dressing better this time. And the chef put on a great show. Close by the movie theatre, Samurai steak house seems the perfect spot for Hibachi cooking when that hits the spot for date date, but sadly this establishment provides some of the worst Hibachi cooking i have eaten. The mood is set when you enter the door, its gloomy, way to dark i think subdues lighting is OK but gloomy does nothing for me. For the price this has to be one of the worst hibachi restaurants I have ever been too. Fried rice is an extra cost. I ordered the steak and shrimp. $28. the shrimp and are way over cooked and the steak is about a quarter inch thick. I asked for it medium-rare and as you can see in the picture it is also over cooked. The cook was not engaging at all. Just slapped food on your plate. I do not recommend this hibachi! Interesting experience here. I came to have some sushi and came on a Tuesday around 11AM. Ended up ordering a hibachi lunch special ($10) and 3 sushi rolls for $10, also a lunch special. On the side we also got edamame. First off, the waitress was being off and creepy. She didn't write our order and did not greet us, she was extremely cold the whole time. The salad was pretty watery and barely chopped. The hibachi was decent... rice was great. Sushi however, was far from "good". The asparagus roll was warm and the rest had no taste (California and avocado roll). We got dirty side plates and no little bowls for soy sauce. This is probably the best sushi I have had in West Bloomfield. ( and I say West Bloomfield because there is better sushi in surrounding areas)-I haven't tried their hibachi-we just went there for sushi- and everything was pretty good. We took a special trip to try a new hibachi restaurant. This place was NOT worth the trip! The food and portion was fine, aside from undercooked vegetables. The service and atmosphere on the other hand were not. Our server was a young boy who greeted us with "What's up, what are you trying to drink today?" Without a smile or anything else. The 3rd time and every time after he returned to our table he had an earbud in one ear listening to music. He also walked past a few times texting. The chef was not friendly or talkative.
