We found Derek when we were in the middle of our rental house remodel and our previous flooring contractors disappointed us by not scheduling our project and by not having the planned material available. So, I was desperately searching for someone to lay laminate and tile in our 900 sq.ft. rental property. Derek was fast at returning my phone call and he was able to provide me with a bid for the work that fit well within our budget and perfectly fit into our construction schedule. He started within a few days. First up was selecting the materials. I ran out the weekend before Derek would start his work to pick out the tile and laminate material. I found the laminate and a quick call to Derek made it easy to make sure I had the right percentage of excess material and number of transition pieces included in the order. I scheduled to have it delivered directly to the job site to make it easier for everyone. Then, came the tile selection. Arizona Tile had exactly what I wanted and even gave me some design ideas. I sketched out the tile designs that I wanted in the shower enclosure, bathroom wainscotting (tiling up a portion of the bathroom walls), bathroom flooring and the laundry/kitchen flooring. Derek used those sketches to figure out how many of each size tile to order and then placed the order through Arizona Tile so that we could use his contractor's account to save on material cost. Then, Derek picked up the tile on his first day at the site. He and his team were a breath of fresh air on a fast-paced project. They were extremely easy to communicate with and were flexible at scheduling so as not to hold up any other construction progress or contractors. They even installed a portion of the tile floor in the kitchen so the other contractors could install the IKEA kitchen cabinets. Then, they came back to finish the tile flooring after the cabinets were installed (amazing teamwork)! Derek had Aaron come out to do the shower enclosure and bathroom wainscotting as soon as the tub was installed. Aaron is very detailed and it shows in his quality of work. He took a look at my design sketch and laid it out. Then, we worked together to finalize the details and improve on the original design. Derek also had Mark come out to help with the kitchen and laundry room flooring. Mark tackled some uneven flooring and took care to make sure that the door would have adequate clearance. Derek typically handled the laminate installation and he also did the bathroom flooring. The 3 of them worked well to cover all the scope of work in a timely way. They even came out to do some of the work on Saturdays to help us stick to our schedule. During the project, we decided to add a full tile backsplash in the kitchen. Derek put together his estimate and he and Mark finished it within a few hours. He even reduced his fee for that work since it didn't take them as long as he originally bid out the work! Even a month AFTER the work was completed, Derek came out to replace a glass mosaic tile piece that had gotten scratched - at no extra charge. We had asked around for a good tile guy to install both the shower and floor tile in my husband's bathroom. A previous tile contractor didn't do a good job on an upstairs bathroom and we wanted to make sure we got a good job this time. Derek did a great job on my backsplash and a small tile repair job in my bedroom. He was on time, low key, and reasonably priced. I had to work on the day he came to install the backsplash. Part way through the day he texted me some photos - I thought that was very nice of him to keep me involved. My backsplash had a random pattern and there were a few tiles that didn't seem quite right to my eye, so before he grouted, he very willingly rearranged a couple of areas until I was happy with it. He also was willing to work with epoxy grout - not sure really why so many tile installers have an issue with it - the epoxy nowadays is much better and easier to work with. He only took time off for lunch (and sometimes he skipped that) or to run out to purchase some materials. He was accommodating and very easy to work with. Highest recommendation! If you're looking for a high character licensed contractor with great work ethic, Derek is your man. Highly competent and sociable. Derek performed a soundproofed installation of 2' x 1' porcelain tile in 3 closets, a bedroom, and bathroom on an upstairs condo unit. He even removed 3 sliding closet mirrors for the installation and properly replaced them when the tile work was done. He is also clean and thoughtful, as we had a stove, washer, and dryer delivered during the installation. Due to my ignorance, I was not aware of tile lippage, and reported the problem to Derek as some of the tile pieces setting higher than the surrounding pieces. He called my wife the next day and made an appointment to repair the reported issue. He told my wife that even though it is a common issue, which we verified by looking closely at the tile installation at my wife's family's home, he still wanted to come out and make sure the customer was happy. Needless to say, I am very happy, I wish more contractors were like Derek. I am selfishly having second thoughts about publishing this review, as we plan to have Derek come back and complete more flooring work when we can afford it. To clarify, excellent reviews may lead to more work and Derek's prices are good. read more
