Ok, here's my review. Pro's: Good Customer Service. Hot Fresh Food. Cheap and Affordable. Cons: Flavors are a little weird for most dishes, like doesn't taste right. And missing some flavors. The sauces are very thick-like, almost with a gelatin consistency. The interior is ok, plenty of seats. It's a place to get something ok, fast, and cheap to eat. The dish was extremely bland and underwhelming. The "fried rice" was just white rice with a scrambled egg mixed in. The crab rangoons were extremely tasteless. When you search "Korean Restaurant" San Dong Express doesn't come up, but it should. They make some of the best Korean dishes in Milwaukee and even Chicago. Their Chap Chae is excellent. It comes piping hot with steam ushering from the large mound of translucent noodles. The mongolian beef is delicious, and my personal favorite - Cham Pong seafood noodle soup is incredible. It even has healing powers. No, I'm not kidding. If your nose is stuffed up and have this steaming hot soup, with the chili pepper spice,-you'll likely be breathing clear before you finish it. And try to find a soup for $8.99 that has octopus in it anywhere else - you can't. Also they are always way, way over generous with rice. If you are looking for white table cloths and waiter service - this is not the place. But if you want fast, inexpensive, delicious food - look no further. Now they do serve Chinese dishes and this is where people who don't know the name difference between Chinese and Korean can be disappointed as Korean food is quite different. As a child, my family was a frequent visitor of the Ponderosa buffet, and I watched the Taco Bell close up shop and move down the street. Not long after, this odd Asian restaurant with an inexplicable tiger on the sign opens in the bell-shaped remains. I didn't think it was anything noteworthy at the time, but almost ten years later I noticed that amongst the series of chain restaurants that adorn Layton Ave., San Dong managed to stay in business. I took it upon myself to see why. As the newspaper clippings hung on the wall will tell you, San Dong is all about the noodles, which they make fresh. It's a shame that they only have six dishes amongst the large menu that feature the noodles, but I can't visit without having the Kan Cha Jang (beef and noodles in a black sauce) or Cha Jang Myun (same thing, but with pork). Between the fresh noodles and the thick and savory sauce (they gave you so much of it that the dish nearly becomes a soup), it's some good eating, and quite a large dish for the price. I feel bad about being late to the game, but there's no way I could have expected anything this good to come out of a building that's shaped like a Taco Bell. Nevertheless, it's a welcome surprise and a nice change from the many chain restaurants adjacent to the airport. read more

First off, let me start by saying that this restaurant is owned by the nicest people around. San Dong is not your normal Chinese restaurant in Milwaukee. It's owned by Koreans, a common thing out West, but not in the Midwest. With that comes some of the only Korean fare in the area. The portions are huge and everything is always made fresh. Maybe it's just me. Most of the reviews for San Dong are 4-stars. I've let to have anything worthy of anything better than 3. Quite frankly, every time I come here, I've been disappointed with my food. There has been a theme of complete lack of flavor. This is a favorite haunt of my co-workers, so I'm obligated to come here from time to time. I've had the fried rice, Chow Mein, General Tsao's, and sweet & sour chicken; all standard Chinese fast-food. If I could use one word to sum it all up, it would be "Meh". OK, as far as the non-food elements of this place: 1. This was a former Taco Bell from way back. So they slapped in a few dragon-themed pieces and a ginormous gold Buddha. The interior is about as warm and inviting as a corner bus stop. 2. The bathrooms are heinous. I'm talking filthy gas station gross. 3. There are no refills on soda. Boo 4. OK, service is fast and friendly enough, but who cares. The food still sucks. Maybe it's just me. Maybe I just haven't found that one thing that will make me fall in love with the place. I am so glad to find a place that has tangsuyuk (ask for sweet & sour pork - Korean style!) and jjambbong in Milwaukee!!! I love, love, love Korean food. The place seems really beat down on the outside. Inside is still set up like a fast food takeout. I've found the staff pleasant when I sat down to eat with a group. I usually pick up to go though. Portions are very generous-- definitely enough for at least 2-4 people for one dish depending on how hungry you are. So, so, so delicious!! read more

Was craving Chinese which in this city is a horrible idea. So many disappointing meals have been had in lieu of finding something worth while. I tried giving this place the benefit of the doubt because it was take out, but this was one retched meal. Started with the potstickers, first bite reviled a tiny wad of meat product rolling around it's vast cavernous interior. Trust me when I said I could barely bring myself to actually take another bite and maybe if I was lucky some meat. Should have just left it on the plate. The outside was dough not a light fried rice paper like you would expect for a potsticker and the filling tasted like mystery cafeteria meat. The cashew chicken was gooey and gelatinous. The description states it to be fried chicken but this looked far from any fried crispy food I've ever eaten. Giant pieces of 'fried' chicken were swimming in whatever sauce they use completely defeating the purpose of frying anything (at least that's what I always believed). The fried rice that came with the meal was edible but bland. My boyfriend ordered broccoli and chicken which looked soupy. Boiled white meat chicken in some whitish sauce that looked like congealed fat. He said it tasted 'meh' All in all I finished half a potsticker and a few bites before my stomach turned from picking up wobbly floppy chicken. But hey at least it was white meat chicken.Boyfriend agrees that we can put that on the 'never again' list. read more

My wifey grabbed us some takeout from here about a week back. They were kind enough to stay open and make us some food, even though it was super cold out and they were going to close up shop early due to the lack of business. The customer service here is always top notch. This is my wifey's fav restaurant, so please don't let her know I'm only giving it three stars. The menu is a little too hit and miss for me. Speaking of hits, the decor in here is a big hit. They took an old Taco Bell, slapped some colorful paint on it and decorated it with a ton of Asian statues. I'll make it my mission for 2014 to get some pictures of the inside for yelp. My only complaint with the decorating is that I know I've been a really good customer of this place for a long time, and while it's flattering, it's completely unnecessary to have all these statues of me in your establishment.....oh wait, that's Buddha, never mind.... The reviewer who doesn't like the sweet and sour here must be mistaking this place with another restaurant, I've been a big fan of the S&S here for a long time. It tastes better here than most places in the city. My wife loves the Cashew Chicken here, and I agree it's rather good as well. I always steal a couple bites from her. I ordered some Chicken Lo Mein here on this trip and I wasn't very happy with it. The noodles were way too soggy, to the point they were mushy. Didn't care for it too much. I'll always be back, but I think I'll start trying more of the Korean dishes, they seem to be more of a hit here. read more

I know, I know, everyone has an opinion or a bias. Mine is that the Shrimp with Lobster sauce here is divine. I gave up trying to find something comparable elsewhere. Almost all Chinese places have this dish where the sauce is gross looking, almost like slime. Most taste ok, but San Dong is neither. The taste is so good I'm here at least once a week. Here's where opinion comes in...my friend tried it and agreed it is good, BUT it's not spicy. Well, that is correct...I can't handle spicy. Family run, fresh prep on all orders. Decor a bit cheesy, with strong Oriental theme. Nothing fancy here, booths and tables, you bus your tray. Very attentive staff. My favorite is Happy Family. After having real jjajamyeong and jjapong in Korea, this is the closest real taste that I will get in town! Just how I remembered it. Would recommend it to people who wants or miss eating them. Express definitely means express! Service was good, food was made fast, and food was hot when picked up. That's the good part. We had beef and broccoli, chicken fried rice, and sweet and sour chicken. None of it had any sort of flavor. The beef (pictured) taste and texture wasn't even as good as the beef you find in the beef and broccoli frozen skillet meals at the grocery store. A previous reviewer said service was indifferent. That sounds about right. Sweet sour chicken was bland--sort of a watered down flavor, whatever breading was on the chicken was nearly non-existent, the chicken chow mein didn't look appetizing and the chicken in it was small and mushy, but at least it had some flavor. Very good food. The noodle dishes are the best. I have not had a better noodle anywhere. Order the Lo Mein. It is not on the menu but you can order any basic Lo Mein dish Do It. The noodles are phenomenal and you get a large portion. Pot Stickers are also very good. Cashew Chicken is another no fail. Very good. This is the only Chinese food restaurant to go to on the south side. Most others in the area are average to below average. They seem to use the same sauces and bland recipes. Do yourself a favor and try the Donger... unique...great food Noodles are made fresh and we never have had a bad meal yet. Many of the patrons are Oriental...More than I have ever seen at any other Chinese restaurant in the Milwaukee area. If you watch the "locals" order mostly noodle dishes. My chinese husband goes here because of the fresh noodles. I love the Garlic Chicken. I can pass on the pot stickers because they are fried instead of steamed. Haven't eaten much else here but the noodles which my husband love and as I said the Garlic Chicken is excellent. As for service, I have no clue, my husband has never complained. read more

I've never been so offended at a restaurant. The owner was the rudest 69 yr old Korean, and when I walked in with my gf while visiting MKE, he immediately yelled at me "yea what the hell do you want." in Korean. I laughed it off at first assuming he meant no harm. Now, my my gf ended up paying for the meal - I was gonna buy her dinner and she offered to get the lunch so I said ok. Then immediately this senile old man yells at me "why the hell isn't he paying for it?!" Im just thinking myself wow this is 2016 and this guy is freakin sexist. I kept going on and on "men are not to be trusted, they are two faced" Okay he's an old Asian dude, whatever. I was irritated but didn't say anything. THEN, when we sat down, I was looking at the map and web to figure out how to get to the art museum, right? He shouted that our food was ready. My gf went up and picked it up. Do you know what he said? He had some audacity to keep talking crap behind my back which I could hear, "Oh does that guy doesn't have hands? Does he not know how to get up?" I was about to lose it. I was raised to respect the elders but he clearly did not deserve any of it nor he has no sense of customer service. I also observed when a blonde white lady politely asked for a couple plastic bags, he grudging threw it on the desk without saying a word. K. As for food, we ordered jjambong (Korean spicy noodle soup) and jjajangmyun (Korean black bean noodle). The portions were large but I could barely taste any flavor in my jjajangmyun - if u must know this is one of the popular Korean dish that every Korean kid craves. No joke, this was the first time I could not finish that noodle in my entire life. Even with the MSG (that should tell you something). Interior is fuggin ghetto af and Im not even gonna bother describing the cleanliness of this venue. If you are gonna run a business in America learn how to speak the language and get a sense of what the customer service is. People like you are contributing to the bad reps for Asians. This place is a hidden gem! Driving by you can easily miss this place but this little place is cute on the inside and has some great food! Don't be fooled from the outside! Everything smelled great and it was hard to pick from the many great choices. I had the Mongolian beef and was super happy with it. It was yummy and was paired with these little rice sticks that were delicious! It came with a mount of rice with egg in it but the rice is not even needed because of the great flavor of the beef.
