Rented a cargo van from here from Burning Man and had a great experience. First of all, most rental places don't do burning man rentals since it wears out the vehicle quite a bit. However, we just got an additional $100 charge (for air filter replacement) and they were fine with the rental. The cargo van itself was definitely not in the best condition. There was an ant colony in the back, and the exterior of the vehicle wasn't in the best shape. However, since we were taking out to the desert, it didnt really matter for us. Best of all, the rental was decently priced and the whole rental process was fuss free. Definitely renting from them again! read more

I have never been a big customer but I've rented equipment over the years. More recently I have gone there to purchase propane. I have bought four tanks and several refills. Not a ton of money; maybe between $200 and $500. I went in today to get a refill and to exchange a tank I bought that did not work. Their reaction? "GO POUND SAND" Good retailers usually stand behind their products or, at lest, try to make customers as satisfied as possible. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO SAN MATEO RENTALS AND YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER. We moved our business offices recently and rented a truck from San Mateo Rentals. Our move was done in stages, so we rented one day here and another day there. Each time SMR was pleasant and easy to deal with. I was able to stop in at 7:45 in the morning, complete the paper work, get the keys and be on my way by 7:55. Their rates were the best I could find on a 24 footer and not once did they comeback with any additional charges. I would defiantly rent from them again. read more

This place is a great place to get ripped off with propane! . Their system needs calibration, but Murphy, "their manager," said the tank was recently calibrated and certified... he also said " we have a faulty gauge." Only..., here's the thing... We have a ten (10) gallon propane tank and San Mateo Rentals seems able to get 11 and 12 gallons into it. We have invoices to prove it! Science dictates that a 10 gallon tank will only hold 10 gallons. Yet, Murphy seems confident that it's "my" problem. We have more than one (1) invoice that shows fraud. So, if you want to have these magicians get "extra" gallons into your tank (which is impossible) and over-charge you, then "go for it." They get five (5) stars because they are the best at ripping people off, then when you try to explain the issue, Murphy will use his skills of rude, callous customer dis-service and hang up on you, because his time is more valuable than yours. This place rocks! I was in need of a little excavator to get rid of some unwanted dirt in my backyard so I went here. They delivered the machine to my house, I was done in a couple hours and then they came and picked it up. Bam! That's it! I felt like I got a fairly good deal and it was really pain free. I'm not sure I will need anything else from them anytime soon but if I do I will definitely go back. And in regards to price.. it was cheaper and easier to use/rent the machine from them than it was if I went to hire some guys to get all the dirt out. I am a happy guy now. I was extremely pleased with using San Mateo Rentals to rent a moving truck. They were by far cheaper than budget or uhaul. My move was only 2 miles from San Mateo to Burlingame. So having a low base rate with a low per mile fee was perfect. A 10ft box truck was only $44.99 for the day with .79cents per mile tacked on. Since I was able to move everything in one shot in a few hours time. I returned the truck the same day. Check in and out process was seamless. No deposit was required to reserve the truck. The truck interior was a little beat up (torn seats, defroster slow) but that was of no importance to me. I definitely recommend this company if you're in need of a truck for local moves! read more

I will preface my review by noting that I haven't visited San Mateo Rentals in a long time. The one and only time I used their services was several years ago, so perhaps they are a different organization today. I don't know because that initial visit was so poor that I've actively avoided the place. I moved from the South Bay to San Mateo and decided to rent a 10-foot truck from these guys to put my stuff in. I actually had more than 10 feet worth of stuff, but my apartment exited into an underground garage that had a sharp turn at its entrance, and there was no way a larger truck was going to get inside. Anyway, I did my move by driving from San Mateo to San Jose a couple of times. So even though I only had the truck a day, I put on some miles. The truck itself was fine. U-Haul quality, the kind that make your teeth vibrate out of your gums. No real issues. The rate they charged was fine. No issues. My problem with the place is that everybody I spoke to there was a huge jerk. First they chided me for diving so much and suggested that I should have rented a bigger truck in the most condescending manner that they could manage. When I explained that a larger truck would not have fit, they shut up and ignored me for a long time; writing up my bill ended up taking around 15 minutes for some reason. During that time a woman in a track suit came in to return a truck. She returned her keys and chit-chat with the jerk guys behind the counter, then left. As soon as she was out of earshot they began discussing her figure, eventually agreeing that with assets like hers a special rate might be in order. At least they waited until she had left to start in with the sexual objectification. At any rate, you get the picture: egotistical sexist trucker guy who goes home and drinks beer every night and yells at his wife spends his days running a truck rental shop in San Mateo. And apparently he's got a friend or two (clones?) of the same species to keep him company. No thanks. read more

So far we haven't had a problem with this rental place (we used them four times) and found their prices competitive. The pick up truck with the Tommy gate is easier to handle than those large U-Haul / Penske trucks and the visibility out of the back is better. They also rent all kinds of other equipment I hope I never have to use. Make sure you also get straps to secure your cargo (ask them to show you how to use them) or you'll never forget the image of your precious, heavy, cargo cutting a swath of destruction on the highway behind you. The guys behind the counter are super informed, exceptionally welcoming and friendly. If you tell them your job or project there quick to suggest the right piece of equipment or size truck you could need and are happy to show it to you on the spot if you want. Now the guys outside are just as friendly and super quick at getting your equipment ready and getting you out of there! 99% of the time they have the machine outside behind your truck and ready to go before your even done signing the paperwork, not only that but they show you how to use it and even let you in on some of the tips or tricks to make the use of the machine easier. These guys have EVERYTHING you could possibly want to rent, and they're open 7 days a week. Easy on and off the freeway and they fill propane tanks, rather than do an exchange, which is getting harder to find. I've rented large ladders, a truck, and other pieces of equipment here and every time the service is great, the price is right, and they have what I want. I also find the staff fast and courteous, and they've gone the extra step to help my tie down the huge ladder I tied to the top of my little wagon. Try getting the mouth breathers over at U-Haul to do so with such aplomb and courtesy. read more

When I turned up to return a rental the total was approximately 25% higher than I had been quoted....so I asked why the difference........without hesitation the clerk pointed to my initials and said "damage waiver, You signed it " it seemed like he had said it a thousand times before. I asked why I had not been asked if I wanted to chose the damage waiver and the clerk said "You should have read it"....the agreement was small print two sided ? This is bad practice and the attitude of the clerk was as negative as I have ever come across. I rent regularly and always decline damage waivers.....when offered ?......they are not necessary for construction equipment.......this crew are adding 25% to your rental by default. Go somewhere else if you can....these guys are trying to milk every penny out of your pocket and were not pleasant to deal with. read more

They are better than u-haul. I paid 39 dollars for a van @ .55 cents a mile . U-haul charges 20 dollars for a van @ .89 cents a mile. You do he math and see whats better for you Renting with them is a quick process versus u-haul. Second time using these guys and will definitely use in the future. I had a friend who worked there back in high school and the staff in the back often were in and out of county jail. I grew up in the area and unfortunately there are many people who are now adults who still act like they are back on the block. I'm stil a fan though because of it's convenient location to 101 but if your a young lady definitely bring a guy along. I know that my wife wouldn't want to go here alone. Not friendly, but have many tools for rental that would be hard to get somewhere else. read more

I found San Mateo Rentals online....they open at 7:30am on Saturday, yay!! The guy on the phone was super friendly and was able to reserve me a truck. Picking up the vehicle was quick and simple, and the service was just as friendly in person as on the phone. This place sucks! I rented a van to move my belongings. The van was fine. However, the customer service was horrid! All encounters with them were painful! First, I called them to ask questions. The guy or probably boy was so rude and seemed bothered that I was asking questions. I even started with stating this was the first time doing this and using them. The only reason I continued to use them was because I thought their price was fair and my friend had used them. The day I picked †he van up was on a whole other level of unprofessional. First, the front desk boy was completely unfriendly. He acted as if he was either hung over or hated his job. He also moved at a snails pace. Literally, the worst customer service I have ever encountered. Working in customer service myself I was disgusted that anyone would act like this while working! Lastly, I returned it early to get a half day rate. Upon returning it he asked for something to identify me with and I patiently waited for the next step. After waiting for about 5 minutes I finally asked " what am i waiting for?". A girl at the front desk responded and said, " We are checking the milage but you can go because we have your card on file." I walked out! So annoyed! Could you maybe have communicated that you morons!?? The WORST experience ever! They should fire the two people I encountered at the front desk or send them to a customer service training! I needed to rent a chainsaw today for a small cutting task. I could have done it with a hand saw, but I am too lazy. I rented the saw from San Mateo Rentals and after the first cut the chain was thrown off the saw. I ended up finishing the work with the hand saw. I am leaving them a 4 star review because when I returned the saw I told them what had happened, the tech looked at the machine and didn't try to talk his way out of it. He just said, "Looks like we didn't set the saw up correctly." When I when to close out my papers they didn't charge me. I didn't even have to ask for a discount. While I would have rather have had the saw working, it is nice to see a business does the right thing without having to harp on them to make things right. read more

Better not rent a van here if you value your life and fellow road travelers. Rented a 10 foot box truck to move this past weekend during the terrible rainstorm. Thirty miles into my 60 mile drive it began raining. The windshield wipers looked like they hadn't been changed in years--all cracked and disintegrating. After a few minutes the driver side wiper blade completely detached and the metal blade holder was my only defense against oncoming rain. Virtually no visibility. I called the rental office and explained. They advised me to buy a new pair of blades and I would be reimbursed. I was basically on my own the remaining 30 miles (I was unfamiliar with the area--only knew where the "O'Reilly" auto parts store was in Gilroy, my destination) hoping it didn't rain much harder. When I arrived in Gilroy, the woman who replaced the blades laughed when she saw the old blades. Would have been very dangerous situation if the rain increased in intensity, putting myself, my passengers, plus others on the road at risk. Needless to say, I'm not happy. When I returned and expressed my disappointment, they offered to waive the rental fee, but charged me for the mileage, blankets, collision insurance, etc. Frankly, considering the serious liability their negligence could have caused if I crashed due to no visibility on such a rainy day, a smart business owner should have reimbursed me for the entire rental to clear up his reputation. I own my own business and that's how I would have handled the situation. I feel they should pay ME for putting me and others at risk and wasting my time during a move to do THEIR job to buy a new set of wiper blades for their truck. Perhaps I should send them a bill for my time and service fee for repairing their substandard vehicle. The irony is they are right next door to an O'Reilly auto parts store here in San Mateo! read more

I've used San Mateo Rentals for years and they have always been professional and their equipment works well. I have rented tools, specialized equipment and trucks from them. Their equipment isn't shiny and new, but neither are their prices. I'd rather the stuff works and the prices are reasonable, and that's their focus. read more
