My family came to the Sand House Kitchen after we saw it on Instagram. We live on the southern end of the island but ventured up to the northern end for a change of scenery. The restaurant is a true hole in the wall but it is worth venturing out of the normal restaurant areas. Since the restaurant sits right on the sand, you truly are at the only beach restaurant in OC. There isn't an ocean view but the walk up to the beach itself takes all of one minute. The food is great and the menu is pretty big for being such a small restaurant. There aren't a ton of tables but we had no problem getting one for lunch on the Tuesday after LDW. There are lots of umbrellas and also an indoor/outdoor seating arrangement if you are more comfortable with that. read more

Went with a decent sized group ( 4 adults and 4 children). Order kids meals and asked for fries instead of chips. All came out with chips and they instead brought sides of fries and charged us more than the typical up charge. A few in our group order an item with avocado. We were eating at 7:45a on Saturday. The food was amazing. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Presentation was beautiful! Service was so friendly, funny, and genuinely enjoyable. Potatoes were not cooked exactly how we like them. We enjoy crunchy potatoes with a lot of color. The menu has classic items but also some interesting items. Food was decent, nothing spectacular. Atmosphere was good because your on the beach so you can't mess that up. No bathroom, not even a port o potty- we had to rush out of there so my daughter could use a bathroom. 2 omelets, 1 kids pancakes and 3 juices was $70 before tip. We've tried to warm up to the menu and vibe at Sand House but both have been disappointing on each visit. The lobster avocado toast had no flavor and the bread was soggy. We sat by the kitchen and noticed several orders returned because they were incorrect. We weren't offered refills on our coffee. Very good menu and food, but slow and inattentive service. The restaurant wasn't busy and actually had more employees than customers. Most of the staff was standing around and not doing anything, yet we had to seek out a waitress. Very disorganized feeling about the place. The crispy bacon we ordered (two pieces) was hardly cooked so we sent it back (BTW, it cost $5 so I guess $2.50 per piece is the rate). We witnessed the one other table of customers send back everything they ordered (I'm not sure of the issue). Breakfast for two was $55 (including tip, which certainly wasn't earned); therefore, not a good value in my opinion. In reading the other reviews below, I'm thankful that I didn't have to use a restroom. Yes, the entranceway is lined with smelly trash cans (strange way to entice customers to eat). Great location right on the beach! It's hard to beat that for a cool breakfast spot. Unfortunately the food was very disappointing. We ordered the pineapple pancakes, and burritos with bacon. My family and I came here the other day to eat. It was very busy so understandably it was taking a bit to get our food. Our server Katie was great while we waited for our food and continued to check on us and apologized for the wait making our dining experience enjoyable. Great spot, perfect location! You can eat right on the sand and access the restaurant directly from the beach. Food and service were both great. I had lobster eggs Benedict. Others with me had pancakes, an egg combination, and a Caesar chicken wrap. Service was great! All food was excellent. I got the chicken tacos which tasted ok but I was hoping for 3 per order and I only got 2 at $14 with no sides any anything it a bit pricy. While the food was edible, fighting off seagulls and sweating while we are eating because no fans were working, made it less than appetizing. Not only was it the best day to sit outside with a beautiful beach breeze going, but I had family visiting so it was the perfect spot for lunch. This was my first time here since reopening, and I was pleasantly surprised! I could tell it was still a new operation, but I had to take a second to brag on our server, John. As a server myself, I know how stressful it can be to have several tables while trying to train new employees. We tried out the restaurant for breakfast this week as it's new and has a great looking menu for both breakfast and lunch. We ate in (they have a covered yet open air area and an eating area in the sand. The staff seemed nice enough too. The good: Our son had the banana pancakes and loved them. They were full of banana flavor with banana chunks in them. The berries were fresh too. The bacon was done perfectly and had great flavor. They allowed a substitution of tomato slices instead of home fries which was great. My hubby really liked their potato home fries too! The bad: It's definitely pricey for breakfast ($51 without tip for 2 adult and 1 child entrees). We wouldn't have necessarily minded that price if everything had gone well which it didn't. I got the lobster omelet which had a very good amount of lobster meat but was completely void of cheese which the menu said it had. It was very dry as a result. An $18 omelet should be perfect and have all of the ingredients in it! I left half of it on the table bc it was too dry to eat. The bad continued: The waiter was nice but had huge issues. My husband ordered eggs and sausage w sourdough and was brought bacon and not sausage (which we didn't even complain about bc there were too many other issues). Waiter also forgot his toast which I asked for after the waiter was MIA for a while. Then he didn't bring butter for the unbuttered toast so another request by us. He never checked in with us and we always had to track him down to obtain the items needed. Our son wasn't brought any syrup for his pancakes (and the table container was empty of it) so again we had to track him down. It was a 92 degree morning and we had to track him down for waters for us. It was ungodly hot in there bc the roof traps in the heat so you would expect they would give water and refills as standard practice and not have to track down the waiter who never seemed to be around. Issues all around and paying the high amount you do here should result in a MUCH better experience with no issues. Recommendation: Due to covid, it would be a good idea to sanitize the table and wood seats after someone leaves. We didn't see that happen. After we sat down they were going to use a sanitizer wipe to wipe the table but we did that before we sat down. Both the seats and tables should be cleaned! We watched them turnover a table and it wasn't done there either. Also, they sat people at every single table so the 6 foot social distancing isn't being followed here even a little as people are back to back within inches. It should be every other table especially since people are only required to wear masks walking in and out and not while they are seated. Second Recommendation: I'm not sure if it could be changed/helped but the entrance to the restaurant could be better. You walk right by a hug smelly trash dumpster and also a huge pile of garbage out front near the sign. Neither of those are appetizing as you go in to eat a meal nor what anyone wants to see or smell on the way in. Final Thoughts: The restaurant has potential but execution is currently lacking as is the waitstaff. I don't know that we would try it again bc of these issues and paying a high price for this experience we had isn't worth it. read more

Where to begin... I saw this place on Instagram and I knew when coming down this week I would have to come check out this new spot. My friends and I arrived to the restaurant and were seated immediately which was great. My one friend needed to use the bathroom and there no bathrooms at this spot. She was instructed to walk to the closest lifeguard stand, to which we were waiting 15 minutes for a round trip. The coffee was good, and the menu and aesthetic of the place was pleasing. We were eating right on the beach couldn't have asked for a better spot. We were excited to experience this menu and the options they had to offer. My one friend ordered the crab avocado toast, which was beautiful and delicious. She also ordered home fries which were forgotten and had to be made after being asked. Another friend ordered the breakfast burrito described to come with avocado, but did not have avocado in it. My third friend ordered the lobster omelette to which she was missing the aioli that came on it as well as any cheese. She also asked for her home fries well done and they came out soggy and soft, and never received her toast for her order. I ordered the Hawaiian Benedict. I ordered my eggs however They were not poached, but way overcooked. The egg yolk was hard and not runny as poached eggs are. I also asked for onions in my home fries and well done and did not receive the onions or my home fries well done. We all waited patiently for our waiter to come back and check on us so we could tell him we were missing things and it was wrong. He never came back. I stopped a buser to ask her for hot sauce, the missing toast and home fries. I then watch her walk up to another waitress and point to our table and tell her what we asked for. To which the waitress said ," that's not my table I'm not doing that". The poor girl walked back to what I think was the kitchen to get us our items. She walked back to our table and said they are starting in the forgotten items now. We received our food and finished out meal. Our waiter dropped the check off once the buser took all of our plates away and then we paid the bill. As a server myself I was completely appalled by the service at this restaurant. The food was good and the atmosphere was great, it was bad execution and terrible service. To not be checked on even one time to refill coffee or check to make sure we got our meals and what we asked for is just service 101. He did not ask if we needed a box or any more coffee. I have never in my life tipped 10% but I did this day. Not only was our waiter awful but I could not believe what the waitress said to the buser. As a server myself, it's all about team work and making sure the customers are happy. I also saw half the staff sitting next to the take out spot the entire time. None of them were cleaning, or checking on tables or doing any work. It was completely unprofessional and I do not believe this place will be around next year if this is the service being received. My suggestion is to order to go only if at all. For the manger who reads this we went on 8/ 5/ 2020 at 10:30 and we had a tall male with brown hair. I love it here so much! The staff is so friendly and they provide amazing service! The hostesses are absolutely amazing, and got us seated right away! My waitress was very nice as well and always came to check on us. The banana foster french toast was some of the best French toast I have ever had. The sauce on the French toast was so delicious. They were also very generous with the amount of bananas on top. I got the cold brew as well, so so good. They even offered a refill which I thought was great. The location is great too, right on the beach! They do have a bike rack if you don't feel like driving. I will definitely be coming back here! read more

Overall, the food is pretty amazing. (I recommend the the Southwest burger and fries) But on the other hand it is way too expensive. The pancakes are thirteen dollars! You could order two orders of pancakes from Augies, another restaurant in OCNJ, and it would cost less than one order at Sandhouse. For five people + a tip is $100. Ridiculous. If prices were to lower, I would be there everyday. read more
