This area of downtown was busy on a Saturday morning during breakfast hours. The line here was a little ways out the door, and we waited 15-20 minutes to be to to the counter to order. They moved people along well, and luckily the menu is hanging right there so everyone was ready to order when it was their turn . It is a little smaller inside but the tables turn over and the same pace of people needing a place to sit. Once we ordered, we had our food in less than 10 minutes . The breakfast plates are very filling. My French toast and eggs were just right and I really enjoyed my reindeer sausage on the side. Sandwich Deck first came on my radar as a hungry downtown worker bee when a coworker mentioned that she loves getting a burger and fries from the Sandwich Deck when she needs comfort food. I tried the burger and it was okay, but not something I've ever ordered again. I love the classic diner vibe and unpretentiously satisfying crinkle-cut fries so my mainstay here is the grilled cheese on sourdough (add tomatoes). This is nothing fancy people: it's nostaligic, fast diner food. And I'm into that. They're incredibly fast (usually about 15 minutes or faster) and always friendly. If you call in a pickup order, go to the counter to pay and pick up at the end of the counter to your right. Old-school Anchorage eats on the cheap. This place is an Anchorage eatery time machine to back in the day--on the list with Club Paris and the Lucky Wishbone. Sandwich Deck, K Street Convenience, and MA's reindeer dogs are arguably the three most cost-effective spots to grab lunch near the courthouse downtown. Exhibit A: Sandwich Deck reindeer dog and fries, $5. I learned from a Sandwich Deck employee that the French toast is the hidden gem on the menu so I need to try the French toast plate and an omelet sometime. I hope the website goes back up soon, I think the new owner is building something. I like reading the menu before deciding to order another grilled cheese. :) read more

We ended up here for breakfast when a popular spot around the corner had a 45 minute wait. We were not disappointed. Small diner type establishment; the only downside is the available seating can be slim, especially with large groups. Don't be afraid to share tables with strangers or grab a cafe table outside (weather permitting). Standard diner breakfast fare, prepared well. We all had omelettes, which had a nice egg-to-filling ratio. Coffee was good and plentiful. We were in and out in less time than if we'd waited for a table at the other place. Service is order at the counter, delivered to your table. The young lady working the coffee refills was pleasant, as was the counter staff. My hotel steered me towards the local tourist trap for lunch and they had a 1 hour wait. So I came here, and I am glad I did. This was certainly worthy of the 3500 mile trip from California. It was ok...nothing about the food WoW'd me.... Came in for Breakfast and the place was packed. We saw a table open up, however, we couldn't sit in it. I work very close to this place and I stop by when I'm in the mood for something a bit greasy. The people that work here are super nice. You can call in an order or go sit in one of the slightly uncomfortable well worn booths. Service is fast and its relatively clean. I've had the fish burger several times and today I tried the patty melt. It was excellent. It was also dripping grease but like I said, it was really good! I don't eat here that often but if you're into diner food and you don't mind slightly greasy, you should try this place. Plus I think the prices are reasonable. Pleasantly surprised! Like others, we came here because the line at the cafe was ridiculous and we were short on time. I got the vegetarian wrap with hummus and the side salad and was pleasantly surprised on the quality of both -- it wasn't the normal iceberg lettuce situation you have at greasy spoons, it was actually quite healthy and delicious. If you're a vegetarian or health-conscious, pretty much don't bother, go around the corner to Snow City Cafe. That is, unless you are content to make a meal out of ice berg lettuce and bottled salad dressing with a side of fries. As for the price, in my universe, $11.20 plus tip for a self-serve soda, a sad side salad and a basket of fries is outrageous. If the dressing was house-made, *maybe*. The people I had lunch with, happy with their seafood platters and french dips, pretty much asked me to never call them for lunch again. I was grumpy. And here's where I explore the depths of my obsessive pickiness ~ the restaurant doesn't have a bathroom, so you have to get a code, walk outside and use the bathroom attached to the parking garage. Make it harder for restaurant patrons to wash their hands ... awesome. (The fact that people don't wash their hands isn't the fault of the restaurant by any means, but I'm just saying, it added to the "this place is a bit dirty" factor for me.) On the plus side, it does have a charming greasy-spoon/diner vibe which I can totally appreciate, and the french fries were tasty, so points for that. The service was incredibly friendly and upbeat, so much so that it makes me wish I wanted to give them a great review and more of my business. Instead, they get a second star. read more

So for a place that is connected to the upscale Captain Cook hotel, where business travelers may be seeking a quick and easy bite to eat, this is quite a disappointment. Also, their sign advertises that they are open for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, but they close at 4pm. When you go in and are looking for vegetarian options or expensive-fruiffy-waste-my-money type of food; then go elsewhere. My wife and I walked in and within one minute we had looked at the menu and ordered the Alaska Omelette a coffee and a hot tea. We promptly found a booth and sat down. The waitress came over and refilled my coffee at least 4 times during our meal. The hash browns were excellent and the Omelette was amazing. Non traditional place to eat. I came here as a back up with my uncle when the place we were going to frequent turned out to be way too busy. Passed by a few times and thought why not? We came and seated ourselves and waited for service. The waitress said we had to order at the counter. Okay, can we have some coffee? You order that at the counter. Oh, well can you get us some coffee and we'll order our food soon? Sighh... Went up to the counter and ordered our food, paid, and sat back down. Prices were pretty reasonable, standards like breakfast meat, eggs, potatoes with variations. Food came, and we ate, asked for coffee three times, and left. What was the waitress for? She sat in the corner looking out the window the whole time while people came out of the kitchen and dropped off the food. I guess the 2 stars are for my not getting used to not being served at a typical restaurant and feeling like a pest for asking for more coffee. Perhaps my experience with this place's food wasn't too spectacular on account of my straying away from their namesake and getting a french toast breakfast.
