No real parking spaces close unless you're super lucky and find a spot on the street. Most definitely a hot spot for illegal patrons who park to run in and run out. I loved the L'Enfant location off 3rd but when COVID happened they closed, in addition to their 1st St NW location. Sad for me because both were great and close to the other offices I used to be at. I forgot my lunch and had been hearing a lot about Phillips, so decided to take the walk. The line was actually less long than expected and told so I was excited about that and the food looks very fresh. I decided to get a turkey club added, bacon and dressed up how I wanted to with a side of kettle chips and a brookie. To my surprise, this was totaled to about $20. The price is outrageous, I probably won't be returning, unless I am treated or forget my lunch again and reach starvation however, it was a pretty good sandwich. I will give them that. This sandwich shop is right across the street from my customer so I stopped here daily for lunch! It's a sandwich shop that is super efficient. You order they make it, you grab your drink and chips and pay at the other side. First day I had the chicken Cesar wrap! Wow so good, the chicken is so tender and flavorful. This is a great sandwich shop - they also sell soups and custom salads which is nice. The only complaint is that the line gets extremely long for sandwiches. I'd recommend ordering ahead by calling or through a website if you don't want to wait a long time. They have a $5 minimum for cards. There is a nice area to sit as well which is nice if you want to grab lunch with people. They also sell breakfast items too. read more

I have to say that I appreciate a set small menu offering that is done right. You'll get this at SBP. With a sandwich chips and drink, expect to pay around $15. That's a good price for DC. Phillip is a good spot for breakfast and lunch. The food is made fresh (they actually use real eggs and not the liquid that most places use) and it's pretty good. I usually get the turkey sandwich/wrap and the first time I got it I was shocked that they were actually carving from a an actual turkey breast and not have prepackaged lunch meat. I haven't had the chance to try any other sandwich (the turkey sandwich is that good!) but the ones I see getting prepared looks good lol. They also have oatmeal raisin cookies that are delicious (not sure if it's made in house or are shipped). I like the location over in SW for sandwiches and such, but this review is purely for this location and the stop-in I made before a meeting across the street earlier this week. I went in, freezing from a long walk from Union Station, and ordered a hot tea. A SMALL tea cost me more than $3!!! I mean, they handed me a generic brown cup of hot water and I had to select a tea bag myself from the counter. Tea bags are like MAYBE $1.25 even for high-quality tea. Water is essentially free. The cup is probably like 30 cents. So they mark up for overhead and profit like 100%!? WTF. I feel like because there's really no other place to eat or get a cup of tea anywhere nearby they are just capitalizing on that and committing highway robbery. read more

It's piled like an inch and a half thick on the turkey sandwich and on the tuna salad, both which are very full of flavor. They do yell at you from behind the counter, asking what you want on your sandwich... So if you don't want to be screamed at "mayo, tomato, lettuce!?" then it might not be the place for you. It's basic deli food with decent selections, a variety of coffee, drinks, chips, cookies. Great place to go for lunch, but they need more seating. Most of the time this is my restaurant by default of location... Conveniently located near the workplace so I come a lot. The service is very fast and efficient, they are professionals at whisking you through the line. They do very well with crowd control and lines. Most of the workers know you by face if your regular which is a plus. If I had one complaint it would be the price of Philips. The prices are reasonable but they you charge extra for everything. ( slice of tomato, sprinkle of cheese etc) no one's looking for something free... but some of the extra charges are erroneous and a bit unnecessary. I've had much of their breakfast. For around 4 buck a breakfast sandwich feeds you well. My go to for lunch is a Cobb salad. It's great. When it was time to pay I was charged for guacamole, sprinkles of cheese and bacon... until i alerted the cashier it was a Cobb Salad :/ (the cashiers are pleasant but boy are trained to charge) :) I continue to come here though sometimes twice a day - breakfast and lunch. read more

Been here for lunch a couple times now. It's set up subway/chipotle style- order your protein and bread, then the fixings, then pay. It's a great selection of meats and breads, and the roast beef and pastrami are sliced to order. Prices are pretty standard for the area, and the seating area is kept very clean. Service is fast and friendly. The pastrami was excellent- great flavor and seasoning. The roast beef had great flavor but was on the chewy side. Portion sizes for all the sandwiches is very generous- as one of my coworkers said, you get half as much at a typical deli. read more

I came here during a lunch break from a Megabus transfer between New York and Durham (it's definitely within walking distance). I shared a beef brisket with my boyfriend, which he thought was rather dry. I liked it; it was filling and pretty good. Café Phillips is clean, open, and modern. The prices aren't too bad (considering I shared my sandwich with my boyfriend, I think it was great). I REALLY like that there are orange slices in the water because it's definitely infused with a great, fresh taste. So awesome. And I didn't get the coffee, but it sounds like the coffee ice cubes are a hit. (: It feels like Café Phillips has all the right little touches, and I appreciate that. Wow, there's already 28 reviews for this place? For some reason I didn't think there would be any reviews since this is strictly a place where people go for lunch during the work week. I don't think they are open after 4pm and they definitely aren't open on the weekends. Nonetheless, I can't complain since this cafe is right below where I work. The sandwiches are good and the service is friendly. I can't give them the full 5 stars since the prices aren't super cheap or anything, but not much more than what you'd expect for that quality of sandwich. Overall, I come here pretty frequently for lunch and if you're in the area for work, you can't go wrong with this place. This place is now my favorite food spot around my job. I went on the suggestion of a coworker and I'm glad I did. I went around noon and it was busy. The staff got the line down quickly and were efficient in getting orders taken and getting them cooked. They service fresh baked bread and the meat like the carved turkey and roast beef are made in house. They also have fresh salads and even serve breakfast. The staff are friendly and the place is clean. I got the steak and cheese with mushrooms, green peppers, Swiss cheese and lettuce and mayo. Perfect breakfast and lunch that is the perfect location across the street from the DC bus station. The sandwiches are a little pricey for my liking, but the flavor more than makes up for the few extra bucks. We got the BLT, grilled reuben, steak and cheese, and egg and cheese on a bagel. All were very delicious. My only recommendation, if you're getting a sandwich for the bus trip, get something cold. The greasiness makes the sandwich very soggy if not eaten right away. But, throwing them in the oven crisps it right up. The best part was the fast moving lines. The amount of people looks intimidating, but the chefs and workers are very efficient. Rounding out my reviews of neighborhood sandwich places. I would say this comes close to Uptown Cafe for providing the best quality. I think this used to be 'Cafe Phillips' (I earlier had a so-so experience at the other 'Cafe Phillips' location), but they must have changed hands. Yet they still have the same quality meats and ingredients. You get a filling sandwich with a choice of breads, and service with a smile. A typical sandwich including cheese, plus brownie comes out a little over $10, but if you're not very hungry, you can save half the sandwich for later. A number of salads, yogurt parfaits, and large-quantity fruit cups line the refrigerated to-go counter. I'll most likely be back. read more

This is, in my opinion, the BEST sandwich you can get in the area for under $8 and a great quick lunch option with lots of available seating. The only downside is that they charge something ridiculous like 60 cents for a slice of cheese, which is a little weird because they definitely don't skimp on any of the other sandwich toppings. You order at the counter and have a choice of several different meats freshly carved in front of you. I think they're all the same price - I usually always go for the roast beef. You can then pick from a lot of different cheeses (for an additional charge) and other toppings (most of which seem to be free). This is one of the few sandwich places that I've found that still serves sprouts, so that's a welcome addition. The line at the counter might be long, but I've never had an issue finding a seat in here during peak lunch rush. Next to Union Station, this is probably your best bet for getting a quick and filling lunch option in the area. read more

I like this place but they recently instituted a $5 minimum for paying with a credit card and the staff is adamant about enforcing the minimum. A cup of coffee is $2.63. I don't usually carry cash with me and even when I do I would not want to use it to pay for a coffee here because it's annoying to get a fist full of coins with your change. My suggestion: they should revisit their policy and let their customers pay how they choose. Or at least make the prices round to an even amount. read more

How did I not know about this place sooner?! Absolutely some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The breads, meats, produce -- everything was so incredibly fresh I came here two days in a row! Nothing compares to watching them carve your meat in front of you...the turkey you get tastes exactly as it would if you had roasted it at home. I also love how much choice is offered here. They have a ton of different deli meats and a ton of different types of breads/wraps that you can really customize your order just the way you like it. Beware: the end product is HUGE no matter what type of bread you get. That's why I don't really mind the prices here -- it's really like two sandwiches with how big it is. I'm not a carnivore, so an egg and cheese sandwich should have been pretty simple. I got in line behind 2 gentlemen, we were the only 3 in line/waiting again, no reason for things not to go smoothly. One ordered sausage and egg on ciabatta, the other ordered french toast with sausage and eggs no reason for my egg and cheese on wheat to be messed up right....uh no. As I'm waiting and watching, the cook put bacon on my sandwich. Who ordered bacon??? Not me, that must be the guy who just ordered. The girl behind the counter, closed the sandwich and looked at me and realized I didn't order meat. She then removed the bacon and tried to give the sandwich. Excuse me, no ma'am I can't eat that, can I have a fresh sandwich please. She looks confused, begins to speak Spanish. The gentleman who ordered the sausage and egg sandwich tried to assist and said oh no she wanted wheat toast. So a fresh sandwich was made. I work nearby the Sandwiches By Phillip on 1st Street NE. I usually go there for lunch, because it's one of the better sandwich shops near my office, despite the high prices. I typically order the same sandwich (hot pastrami on either wheat or on a spinach wrap, with spicy mustard and provolone cheese). However, despite the length of the line, they frequently get my order wrong. Specifically when the line is low, I'm often left standing there to wait while no one gives me eye contact or saying that they'll help me. Today, they started speaking about me in Spanish (not knowing that I understood), and the young lady serving accused me of filming (esta grabando). I told her I was not filming in English and she froze. The male to her left then started saying in Spanish that I was filming because I liked the female staff member. She then told him to be careful (ten cuidado), but he continued. As silly as this sounds, I find this situation insulting, as I'm just a paying customer minding my business. The food is generally good, but my service experience? Less than stellar by all accounts. Maybe others will have better luck. read more

This place is very close to my office, so it is convenient if you need to grab something fast, that is just about the only good thing I can say about it. There are several reasons why I would recommend not going here: First, the short Asian guy with spiky hair who's name I don't know has a bad attitude and shouldn't be working there. Second, when they are crowded, which is often, they take no care whatsoever in preparing your sandwich, so you end up with a sandwich that has a gob of mayonnaise on top of a piece of lettuce with everything falling out of it. No one wants to bite into a chunk of mayonnaise or eat a sandwich that falls apart when they touch it. Third, and this is probably the best reason to stay away from there, I am pretty sure that I got food poisoning from there. It was the only thing I ate that day and I was incredibly sick for 2-3 days. The food poisoning is reason enough to stay away, if you add in the staff's bad attitude and the lack of care they take in putting your sandwich together this place is a definite no-go. read more

Food is really good and the staff is nice and helpful but it's expensive. I ordered a turkey sandwich and they said 'what kind of cheese would you like?' And I got cheddar on it. At the register they charged me a dollar for for two squares of standard sandwich cheese. I don't care about the dollar itself but protested on principle that I didn't ask for cheese and they didn't tell me it was extra. The manager charged me regardless and on their giant menu sign above the counter says 'extra cheese: $1.00'. That's inaccurate because it implies that cheese is a standard condiment (which it is at nearly every other eatery on the planet).
