We got the hot ham sandy and the pickled egg sandy; honestly regret not actually getting of the muffuletta sandwiches. The hot ham sandy was really good. The bread was nicely toasted but still soft inside, and the hot ham and provolone worked well together to provide a huge flavor bomb. Some pickled red onions to balance, and the apple butter added just a touch of sweetness, not overwhelming at all. Really amazing sandwich. The pickled egg sandy was a bit interesting. You REALLY have to love pickled to enjoy this; the egg is strongly pickled, the potato chips are sour, even the bread is a sourdough. It's pretty overwhelming, so beware. 3/5 for me! I mainly felt that it just wasn't my taste palette and it was my first muffuletta so nothing else to compare to. However, I'd definitely recommend this to at least try as I know it's a New Orleans classic and I've never seen this type of sandwich in SF before. We came at 11am on a Saturday and were the first ones there. The cashier was super nice and friendly! My friend and I ordered the original Muffuletta and Roasted Mushroom Muffuletta; it came out in about 5 minutes. Both were fat portions and the Italian bread was amazing; super soft and airy! I definitely recommend getting it toasted which makes the cheese pull very nice! It just was very salty & tangy and they were super generous with the olive portion which again, just personal taste preference but I didn't like it too much. A sandwich carrying supreme hype. More than one outlet talking about this sandwich being one of the best in the city. My expectations were as high as Haight Street usually is. Objectively this was a really tasty sandwich. Great tartness from dressing and olive spread. Quality meat. Presentation was high level. It's a good sandwich but it missed the marked as elite. I got the first sandwich of the day they put out and I asked them to toast it. Part of the bread was soggy. That seems unacceptable. It wasn't toasted all the way through so part of the sandwich was cold and some warm. It seems like all the ingredients were there but it didn't come together perfectly. My disappointment grew further when I realized the smallest portion of this sandwich was $14. Overall I want to say this is a really good sandwich. I just fell victim to the hype. For this restaurant, you really have to want a Muffaletta sandwich. I can't say I am a huge fan of muffaletas, but I will say that I appreciate this restaurant's existence in San Francisco. The menu was quite confusing to me, as I had never had a Muffaletta sandwich before. The menu has options to order "Muffaletta 1/8" and "Muffaletta 1/4" - which refers to the round shape it comes in. The entire sandwich, which is a circular shape, is like a cake - and "Muffaletta 1/8" refers to 1/8 of the entire sandwich, which equates to 1 serving. 1/4 is a quarter of the cake. You can also order the entire thing, $125, which would be so much fun for a party!!! My husband and I tried the only things on the menu at the time, which was the regular one (mortadella, prosciutto, soppressata, provolone), and the mushroom one. The regular original one with meat was good, but very salty. The mushroom one was better IMO. We also had the pickled egg salad to share which was incredible!!! I've read some reviews claiming best sandwich in SF, and while I have zero qualms giving Sandy's muffuletta & coleslaw 5/5 stars, best sandwich in SF is a bit of an "it depends" label for me. (Depends what neighborhood I'm in, my mood, the typa weather Mother Nature is gifting us...) Will I go out of my way to get to Haight/Ashbury weekly? No. Will I pick up a muff from Sandy's if I'm in the 'hood & due for a cured-meat-based sandwich? Hell yes. I've never been to NOLA, so can't say I have an "authentic muff" understanding to compare to Sandy's, but after doing brief research, muffuletta is both the sesame bread (which at Sandy's was much fluffier/squishy than I was expecting) as well as the sandwich in its entirety (originally made by NOLA's Italian immigrants). Honestly, might be most pleased with the 'slaw; really wish I got more slash I need to figure out the vinegar? balance to make my own. Inside the shop, there are about 6-8 seats, plus a restroom (for customers). A fair assortment of chips; cookies looked bomb but I had to bypass. Our friend told us about Sandy's being relatively new. And after we went to New Orleans and tried their muffuletta sandwich, we have been trying to recreate it ever since. Our food came out pretty fast and let me tell you! The muffuletta was so flavorful. They had toasted it and the bread they use was so soft and crunchy, we were wondering if they baked the bread there themselves because that's how fresh it tasted. The pickled egg salad was so good! It was crunch, Mayo-y and had a great pickled flavor. We decided that the egg salad sandwich would probably be bomb. Long story short, we'll be back for more! After reading all the reviews, we were excited to try their muffuletta, but then we were so disappointed. We're fine with having a dish well salted/seasoned, and while yes, many of the items that are on this sandwich have some salt, this sandwich was so salty, it was almost inedible (I think the problem was that the olive tapenade was over-salted). The surprise highlight was the pickled egg salad sandwich with Zapp's potato chips adding crunch and salt. We would go back just for that one but will skip the headliner next time. read more

The owner immediately moved a chair out the way so my son was able to maneuver his wheelchair in the restaurant. Sandy's is now located in upper Haight near Ashbury. Same great food! The sandwiches are served on a round sesame seeded bread which is cut into servings, like a pie wedge. The 1/8th size slice is plentiful and filling. It also makes for great leftovers, and toasts well too. My partner is a large man and tried to eat the 1/4 sandwich and failed, it's a lot more food than expected. Mufaletta's are salty, and a little spicy too! They typically contain mayonnaise, a pickled giardiniera or olive salad layer, provolone cheese (and sometimes also Swiss cheese), and various cold cuts (or alternatively a vegetarian protein like mushrooms). Came here on a sunny Sunday with friends eager to try my first Muffuletta. The sandwiches come whole or in 1/8 and 1/4 servings. The whole sandwich is quite massive, and I found the 1/8th to be rather filling without being too stuffed. I ordered the roast mushroom muff and my first bite, and I was overwhelmed with an explosion of flavor that was hard to describe. There were notes of delectable sourness, almost tangy. The sauce was also a bit spicy, tempting one to take more bites. The bread was wonderfully toasted, and each bite had a wonderful sharpness from the cheese. After devouring such a wonderful sandwich I polished it off with a nice warm cup of coffee which really hit the spot. I recommend giving Sandy's a try, though be warned it may feel heavy but you'll be left wanting to be more. read more

I'm a huge fan of pickled and cured things, and the original muffalata is packed with capers, olives, salamis, and salty goodness. Definitely get it toasted, which makes biting into the sandwich easier. The egg salad also has some lovely pops of pickles and vinegar, so satisfying! Maybe 3 and a half stars but the items I enjoyed were good so I round up. Muffuletta: To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan. I just found it to be too spicy and unbalanced. The bread is really good though. Also definitely get it toasted. I was a little late to pick up the order and so by the time I did, it was no longer hot and the sandwich was just okay. After popping it in the toaster oven at home, it was considerably better. As others have noted, it is pretty salty. Pickled egg sandy: I loved the pickled egg salad but found the sandwich terrible. I just don't feel like untoasted sourdough is very good especially when paired with the relatively soft salad. If I could get this on the muffuletta bread I would definitely do that but they also sell it in containers and I think that's the way to go. Pimento cheese: This was really good. It had a great balance of different flavors - tang, spice, smokiness, cheese, and so on. If you like pimento cheese definitely get this. There's also a sandwich version of it available (and luckily the bread is toasted). I think the best way to enjoy it though is with some ritz crackers. Brown butter chocolate chip cookie: $5 for a single cookie is a lot but this was an incredible cookie. I would come back for containers of the pickled egg salad and pimento cheese as well as the cookie. The mufuletta wasn't my cup of tea but I think that may have more to do with my own preferences than Sandy's. read more

My friend wanted to try Sandy's so we came to have lunch. I ordered a quarter of the classic muffuletta to share with my partner. It was a good size to share with another person. We also ordered the slaw on the side. I think the sandys was better than the side. However, the next time I visit, I will try a different sandys because the classic had A LOT of olives. If you're not a fan of olives, I would just ask to take them out. The worker was very nice and the food came out very quick. There was also ample seating inside the store, at least a few tables. BUT I think muffulettas are just not my cup, so it's more of a matter of personal taste. I got the mushroom one (as a big lover of mushrooms generally) and felt the olive/caper flavor was much more overpowering than the mushrooms. The bread was really yummy, when toasted though! I also think the sandwich was a bit expensive for how small the slice was (though I probably have a larger appetite than most I guess).
