Second time returning, since Dr. Portman retired, for my annual check up today. The remodel made the office brighter and more modern. Sample frames were displayed in easy reach and convenient locations as you slowly wander. Mirrors right where you need them to be so you have an idea of how you look in your glasses. My exam was efficient. Pre-test were efficient and quick. Emma assisted with the after exam to help me pick out my new glasses. Very reasonable cost. Quick, fast, friendly, bright, easy parking. Hello! Just some constructive feedback. I do not use this location as a doctors office so my rating is not of the doctors, but just my experience buying new glasses. I came in last Saturday to order new prescription sunglasses and immediately the customer service was just okay. The lady behind the counter did not want to help me initially because I am not a patient there and had my prescription in an email instead of printed out. I offered to email it to her which was when she then reluctantly agreed to help me. After she got it printed out she was much nicer. She also had me fill out a questionnaire which asked some really unrelated and personal questions that I just put "N/A" too. My first suggestion would be to modernize your service a bit. No one owns printers anymore. And I don't want to fill out a random questionnaire that is unrelated to buying new glasses. So I ordered my new glasses and got a text around Wednesday to come pick them up. Super quick to get them in, but because of the terrible operating hours (9-5) during the week I couldn't come pick them up until Saturday. My second suggestion would be to keep at least the retail part of your store open later on some days during the week for people who work. I came by on Saturday to pick them up and walked up to an empty store. It was gutted and painters were hard at work. For a few minutes I thought I got scammed until the guy inside showed me a printed out piece of paper taped to the side of the wall. My complaint here is not that you are renovating, but that your customer service failed again by not communicating this to the customers who were asked to come pick up their glasses. My third suggestion would be to send out a mass email/text informing customers of closures so we know to reschedule our pickups. read more

I went here to get my annual eye exam done. During my first visit, I was suggested for a follow-up appointment to see if my dye eyes get improved. And I have paid all out-of-pocket fees to cover both the first and the follow up visits. However, on the day of the follow-up visit, when I arrived the clinic, I was told my appointment didn't exist (even I got multiple text messages to confirm / remind me of the appointment). What's worse is the way front desk staff handled this situation - the lady asked me to wait for at least an hour because there would be two patients ahead of me (when I was supposed to be seen as the first patient if the scheduling didn't mess up). And what made the experience more terrible was that when I explained that I had other agenda afterwards so couldn't wait that long and asked for at least a bit early (like in between the two patients), the front desk lady rejected me with a very rude and cold attitude. I do not have issues with Dr. Hsu who is professional, but the admin staff are just so unprofessional and arrogant. read more

Dr Portman. 1. Service got bad over time and not going in detail especially when a patient is mentioning some issues. 2. When call for an appointment, it's very much delayed, who wants a doctor who isn't there when needed. Delayed like a month. 3. Asks money for retina scan, all ophthalmologists do it for free in bayarea and they do not claim the insurance. 4. Prescription glasses are of poor quality do not buy! mine broke within span of 4 months and they took additional cost on that. 5. This is Important, do not go to specialists on his referral, they are all big doctors and no time to listen only there to make money. I am not happy with my cataract surgery despite paying lot of money. I have been visiting Dr Portman for more than 10 years but urge everyone to change your doctor. Called the day before a national holiday and they were able to squeeze me in for an appointment in the next couple days. Let me just say, this was incredibly hard to find the parking lot entrance to it. We had to circle around the block to get the deiveway since our first attempt put us against traffic. Would recommend coming early to your appointment if you're a new patient like me. It also gives you time to fill out paperwork. When I entered, I was first assisted by a very nice Asian front desk woman. She was quite efficient administering the pre-appointment testing and we made some nice conversation as well between tests. They offered their optomapping (? May be misremembering the name) technology as an alternative to dilation, but when I asked if my insurance specifically covered it, they were quite upfront and said no, and did not push further when I declined. Appreciated Dr Neunzig's explanations and he was quite willing to answer any questions I had. Surprised since my prescription was less than my previous one, but I could see just as well. When I asked, Dr Neunzig gave me a nice explanation: most other places just ask which one looks better, but often the contrast does not actually translate to better sight. I guess I was being given to high of a prescription before, since this is the first time I heard about selecting pictures during the eye exam based on actual letter definition (blurry vs not), not just more bolded lines. Saturdays are half days so also plan accordingly. Would be happy to come back here in the future! read more

SCVC imploded during COVID. All the doctors attacked each other like lord of the flies, and the patients are collateral damage. In the end dr neunzig was forced out and he stole all the patient records. Nobody else in the office will talk to his patients. Since I have to start over anyway, I'll find a new optometry group. I would give this place zero stars if I could. After my eye exam, I was told to come back for a contact lens fitting and my prescription would be given to me then. Unfortunately, Covid hit and the office closed up. When the office re-opened, I got a call from the office checking in and someone would call me back to answer my questions and follow up with my prescription. This was in July 2020. Its now August 2020. I literally call the office twice a week, sometimes three. I've emailed Dr. Neunzig on multiple occasions. Of the 50 million times i've called, the office has only managed to call me back once, and the doctor has only emailed me once. I've also have yet to receive a copy of prescription. I have been a patient of Dr. Portman's for over 10 years now. My mom brought me here as a kid and I have continued to come back for all of my eye care needs over the years as well as those of my family which include 3 kids and hubby! He's awesome and makes you feel extremely welcome and right at home. I have moved all over the bay area since I first started coming to this office and no matter how far I move, I have always been more than willing to go out of my way to come here! The office staff is awesome and the ladies go out of their way to make sure you're taken care of. They also offer a wide selection of kid's, men's and women's eye glasses, sunglasses and even the sport goggles. They have something to fit everyone's price range and all the latest styles. Although I think Dr. Neunzig is a fine enough optometrist, I have a big issue with how he and his office deals with their patient's time. I came in for my yearly check up for a 10:45am appointment in the middle of May. Dr. Neunzig didn't show up to the office until 11:30. As I had to go into work, I couldn't finish my appointment and had to reschedule to get my eyes dilated. Fine. I get it. Sometimes, things happen and we get to work late. I scheduled it for June 1 and decided to take the day off work just in case. Today, I show up on time for my 9:45am appointment. Again, I found myself waiting in the waiting area for half an hour. I finally flagged down one of the office staff (who I guess forgot I was there? I was the only person in the waiting room) and she replied "Oh well he's behind schedule. Do you want to reschedule?" I just left. No, I don't want to reschedule. I want you to be cognizant and respectful of your patients' time. Went for yearly eye exam with Dodd Portman and that evening felt like something was irritating my eye. Waited a couple of day to see if it would resolve itself. It got worse and called, they said I could see Dora Scharaff O.D. She insisted on doing the glaucoma test(which had already been done 3 days before) then put the uv fluorescence without explaining what and why. She stuck her bare fingers with long fingernails directly in my eyeballs and then proceeded to try to turn my lids inside out! This was over the top painful and totally unnecessary! To add insult to injury they charged me for the office visit! Now I'll probably end up with an eye infection and scratched cornea! Why did I let her touch me!!! read more

I was not impressed with the place. The old woman at the counter was extremely rude. She was not friendly at all. I have been a patient of Dr. Neunzig for the past 2 years, and I think I have found my long term eye care here at this office. Despite my future location moves, me and my family will be coming back here for our eye services for many years to come. First of all, the eye exam here goes through several different machines, this is way more than what I used to get at other eye doctors' offices. I think doctors who invest in equipment and extra care for the patients definitely does care and they are incredibly informative. Admitted the office front desk staff were not a particularly cheery crowd from my several experience there, not perky big smiles type, but I focus more on the quality of care provided by the doctor and the advanced machines they invest in. I come yearly for my preventative eye exam, my contact lense fitting, and my opto-map exams (not too many offices has this service). Dr. Neunzig has integrity, is very patient in explaining things to make me understand and help prioritize my eye health care expenditures. He's very informative and does not have problem telling you the straight truth, which is incredibly helpful for me as an educated consumer. I will be coming here for eye exams and glasses in the future, even if I do decide to get Lasik/PTK. I have used this Dr before over the past few years without any problems BUT THIS YEAR I HAVE HAD A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. My daughter and I were seen July 17, 2020. We spent over a 1,000 dollars on three high end prescription glasses. They said they would be ready in two weeks. I called and called and called. No one would return my calls. Finally, after six weeks my daughter received her reading glasses. I have left so many messages and ask for the tracking number for the package of the company that they have ordered my two glasses from. I've been coming here for several years to see Dr. Hsu for my yearly eye exam. She's always been very pleasant & thorough. I appreciate her being available to see patients on Saturdays! When I went in for my exam yesterday, I met Rachel who was incredibly sweet. She did all of the usual tests needed prior to seeing the doctor. We had such a great time chatting & laughing! After my appointment, she told me she would help me pick out some glasses as well. She has the patience of a saint, as it took me a while to find the right pair of glasses & sunglasses. She went above & beyond to help me find the right color and also checked the options on her computer in the back office. Even though the office was closing at 1:00, she didn't rush me whatsoever. The Santa Clara Vision Center has cared exceptionally well for all of our family members eye care needs for over 17 years. What I appreciate about Dr. Portman and the staff is that they genuinely care about the patient. Dr. Portman has been able to diagnose issues that are vision related and other health issues discovered as a result of the vision exam and by symptoms not present in the previous year's exam.
