There was no mention of their daily drink specials until I saw the small sign after we had our beverages. I missed out on the $5 Cosmo but instead had a nice $7 Long Island. The "happy hour" is a special appetizer, soup and sushi menu. Prices are discounted by $1-$2. We ordered a few hot apps: veggie tempura, and spring rolls. Both were meh. The tempura batter was too thick and not crispy. I'm not sure if it was sitting a while before it was brought out to us. It included one broccoli, many yam pieces, eggplant and one other root veggie. The spring rolls were tiny and the inside was mushy. Hubby ordered a spicy CA Roll. Honestly I can't tell you what was inside but it was not spicy and I'm not even sure of the consistency. Based on this appetizer experience we decided against dining here for a full meal. Local here going to this place since I was in high school 2009 and never complained...until now. I ordered the $22 Hibachi Chicken Entree and this is what I got. Drove here from grandy. We have been coming to OBX for YEARS, and now live here - never ate here until today. Why? The name...one of us eats sushi, the other does not so we never looked beyond the road sign where is says "Sushi Bar". Very much our loss. Very nice on the side, and larger then I expected. The service was polite, friendly, prompt, and fast without being pushy. They have what i would call a a pretty typical asian cuisine type menu. Servings are HUGE, well prepared, HOT temperature wise, and very good. As to the sushi, I did get the Yellowtail Jalapeno sushi which was good but not great (that said I am an admitted sushi snob and really only like nigiri style which this was not). Decent sushi at decent prices. We stopped by here after a noontime beach trip and was excited to eat here for the happy hour special starting at 2pm. The happy hour menu has a good amount of variety for low prices on sushi. If you are looking for speciality rolls there are only about two on the happy hour menu since most other rolls are simple style rolls. We ordered two plates. Our first plate had the Spicy Tuna Roll ($4.38), Shrimp Tempura Roll ($4.55), Salmon Avocado Roll ($4.20), Super Duper Roll ($4.55). The Spicy Tuna Rolls and Salmon Avocado Rolls were mediocre and as expected from any normal sushi place. The Shrimp Tempura Roll was extra tasty compared to other shrimp tempura rolls I've had before and lastly the Super Duper Roll was amazing. We ordered the Super Duper Roll again because it was so good. It has cooked salmon, avocado, and eel in it and was only $4.55 for 6 pieces. If you stop by for happy hour and like eel and salmon, you MUST try the Super Duper Roll. On our second plate we also had the Volcano Roll ($6.27), Shrimp Tempura Roll and Super Duper Rolls again. The Volcano Roll was a bit strange and personally not my favorite but anyone who loves speciality sushi's with bold flavors would probably enjoy it. It's deep fried with tuna, crab, and cucumber. Honestly it is a great price for a more complex type of sushi. Our service was overall average and the food was decent. During our trip to the OBX, i wanted to make sure we took advantage of the fresh seafood in the area. What better way to do that than thru sushi? After reading thru plenty of reviews and looking over the menu, we decided upon Sanya because we felt everyone in our family could have something. SERVICE (5/5): Their contactless service during COVID was impressive, as well as, efficient. They had a plastic bin where the food was put in on one side and you opened thru the other, ensuring you never made contact. The CC machine only had the area where you inserted the card exposed. After signing the receipt you dropped it back into a different box. Upon placing our order, it was ready in about 15 mins FOOD (4/5): Considering our dining experience at the OBX was underwhelming prior to eating at Sanya's, it was refreshing to eat from a place where their rating was representative of their food. Sushi was fresh very and flavorful. We got the SUNFLOWER, FIERY DRAGON ROLL, MANHATTAN, CALIFORNIA ROLL. I really wish that more sushi restaurants took advantage of offering FRESH crab in their CA rolls instead of the imitation crab stick, it makes such a huge difference. I don't know about other patrons but I would definitely pay the premium to have this option. Back in CA many sushi establishments had this and it was always a hit and a best seller. Anyway, all of the rolls were really tasty; my husband and I enjoyed the Fiery roll the best. The sunflower was great but a little heavy of the creaminess that it overshadowed the freshness of the fish a bit. GENERAL TSO was ok. it was pretty much what you would expect from an westernized Chinese dish - very sweet. That being said, the chunks of chicken were generous and cooked well (crispy but not overly done, with good batter to chicken ratio) CHICKEN WITH BROCCOLI: This was like your traditional beef and broccoli but substituted with chicken - tasty and approved by the fam. My 18 month old ate a lot of this - the broccoli was tender but not mushy and the chicken was thinly sliced and cooked well. POTSTICKERS: these were a hit amongst my children who requested i ordered a 3rd serving. they were steamed first and then the bottom was pan fried - just the way gyoza should be made. I was worried it was going to be like some restaurants where they skip the steaming and just deep fry the gyoza, which i really dislike, so i was pleased that they were executed properly (in my opinion). TEMPURA: this was disappointing, but I think it was due to the fact that it was affected by the condensation thru the packaging. by the time we opened up the container, the tempura was soggy and tasted very greasy. this was the only thing we ended up throwing away after everything was said and done - hardly touched. MISO & EGGDROP SOUPS: my kids enjoyed the miso and i thought it was well done when i tasted it. it had a generous amount of tofu and seaweed, making it pretty hearty considering it is a light broth soup. no complaints here. the egg drop soup was pretty bland and nothing special. I like to sip on soup while i eat so this did the job but wasn't anything to rave about. OVERALL, this was place solid and should we ever find ourselves back at OBX, this is a spot we'd most definitely return to. read more

So, happened across this place due to its close proximity to our hotel and bases on yelp reviews. Unfortunately we were underwhelmed when we left. First off, points go to its location, right next to holiday inn. The menu is extremely varied, including Chinese dishes, not just Japanese fare (I think it is Chinese owned). We got sushi rolls only, which were all delicious. Highly recommend the sunflower roll for a cool slightly sweet/spicy twist. The decor is... Plain. Can't think of much positive to say other than that. The layout is odd, with tables/ booths along the perimeter and then a blocked off square of seating in the middle. The service is where the downfall begins. Maybe it was just this night and they were short waiters/bartenders, but there were only two servers aside from the sushi chefs, and they were busy and running around the whole time, including tending to those seated at the bar. There were a bunch of open seats yet we still waited for someone to seat us for about 10 minutes (no one else waiting to be seated ahead of us). Our server did apologize for the delays and offered us free fried noodle chips as an appetizer, so I can't really blame her. We waited approximately 20 minutes for our sushi, again after an apology that the sushi chefs were swamped. After getting our food it was a difficult process to try and wave our server down for more beverages/bill, as she would drop food off at another table and then hustle back to the kitchen/register. We ordered out from them recently and had a great experience. If you're on vacation in the OBX and want hassle free takeout, this is the place for you. We ordered sushi (super fresh) and a hibachi meal - both were delicious. The kids shared a hibachi steak and shrimp meal and loved all of it (comes with the soup, salad, fried rice, noodles and a side of vegetables, just as if you were eating there) - it also heats up great and gave us another meal we didn't have to worry about. The ordering was through their online portal which was simple (and allowed the customer to leave notes for the restaurant, which is always appreciated). Pick up times were as soon as 15 minutes out but could also be scheduled much later, if you wanted. We were in Kill Devil Hills and this restaurant was in Kitty Hawk, which was only a 6-minute drive. Pickup was also smooth as silk - they have (wish I had taken a picture of it) a large tupperware container sitting halfway in and out of a boarded up window, allowing staff to safely place your meal in there from the inside of the restaurant, then push it out to you on the outside for a truly contactless pickup. In a town that is not really ready for COVID-curbside dining, this restaurant stands out from the crowd. read more

Waitress was very nice and attentive.we ordered the wonton soup to start, we both have to say one of the best wonton soups we've had. We ordered spring rolls but she forgot, and didn't put on our bill. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, it came with a salad, chicken was very good, tender big batter fried fingers presented nicely with a spattering of vegetables. I added fried rice and there again was the best! My husband ordered the orange beef also with fried rice. He said the beef was a little tough but good flavor. This restaurant has never let us down. If you're looking for tasty sushi, good drinks, and/or great service without the zoo-like atmosphere common to most OBX restaurants during peak season, look no further! We go at least once every time we're down. I can't speak to their Chinese or Thai food because I've never tried it but, being that they're mostly a Japanese restaurant, their sushi is really where it's at. The sushi chef is akin to an artist and every roll we've ever had has been delicious (our "junkfood" favorite is the deep-fried Volcano Roll). The crudo appetizer is really fresh and delicious also. Their drinks are sooo cheap, even outside of happy hour, and very tasty (and strong!). Restaurant is SUPER clean and staff is always quick and friendly. They do carry out also but dining in is so quick and easy, I'd recommend you take a seat and enjoy! read more
