I haven't been to Sap Sap in probably about a year. I decided to stop by for dinner on my way home last week. This is a no frills restaurant but solid food with great flavor. Small restaurant with maybe 6 tables and a couple tables outside. The server was efficient, and cordial but not overly friendly in case thats what you are looking for. They were out of a couple of things which was a bummer but I think now a days you find that to be the norm with shortages on items. I ordered the egg rolls and the chicken dish. If you like food that makes Thai hot seem mild, you have to try this place! If you just want flavorful and delicious unique oriental dishes from Laos, you have to try this place! If you have no idea what Laotian food is about, come here and find out! We started with Laotian iced coffees! I love coffee and we had to try it! They were strong, huge, sweet, creamy and delicious! Worth the visit and filled us with major energy to take on an amazing meal! We ordered incredible spicy tofu and homemade Lao sausage for appetizers. Both were excellent. The tofu came in small crunchy pieces and the spice level was perfect. Three pieces and the spice buzz hit home! The sausage was clearly homemade, flavorful and delicious. My wonderful wife ordered some kind of dish Lao hot. They double checked and she confirmed that's what she wanted. Ok... here we go... it looked beautiful but as she ate it, her eyes got watery and she started to get that determined look signifying there is no stopping now! Her glasses fogged up but she continued! She exclaimed, this is the third hottest dish I've ever had in my life! Wow! I was stunned since that meant it was mega hot! Just being near it caused me to start sweating. My mild pad sew ew tofu, veggies and noodle dish was perfect for my stomach and I enjoyed a few bites, getting the rest to go to control my portion size. The prices were very affordable and the service was very friendly and enthusiastic. They were happy because we were ecstatic! Can't wait to return! Hubby & I came here with 3 of our friends. This was all of our first times eating at a Laotian restaurant. Everyone liked all of the food that they ordered. We ordered fried ribs appetizer (delicious!). Hubby had drunken noodles for his entree, which he demolished. I ordered Khao Poon (my first time trying that dish), which I loved! We also order Larb Gai for everyone to share. I really liked that dish, and it was also my first time trying that. I love spicy food so Larb Gai & Khao Poon were right up my alley. Recently, I've been exploring Lao cuisine and Sap Sap Lao Cafe did not disappoint. The owner and staff were friendly and enjoyed their conversation. The inside was clean and cute. Plan accordingly if you plan to have a large party of 6-7 people. The papaya salad was awesome. We added the salted crab to add some extra umph! It did make the salad saltier than I'm used to. Washing it done with their delicious ice coffee made it all better. I normally get Laap Beef but they recommended the Laap pork belly. Awesome recommendation! Pork belly gave a fun texture to chew. It was flavored just right. Not one flavor overpowered the other. Lao Sausage was cooked well and the lemon grass flavor goes well with the sticky rice and papaya salad. OVERALL My absolute favorite thing to get here is the DRUNKEN NOODLES. The flavor of this stir fry noodle dish is always consistent. My second favorite thing to get here is the LAO SHRIMP CEVICHE. The shrimp is raw (hence, the ceviche part) and cured in a spicy Lao citrus/fish sauce mix. This sauce was so delicious, I had to drizzle some on my rice. I also highly recommend the MANGO STICKY RICE if they have it in season. As for the LAAP GAI and THUM MUK THANG, they satisfied my craving for Lao food, but they weren't my favorites compared to the other dishes. I did love that the LAAP GAI had extra toasted rice powder in it, but I know a lot of people who may not like that. Overall, Sap Sap Cafe does indeed satisfy my Lao/Thai food craving. My Laotian friend told me this restaurant is the best Laotian restaurant in Florida. So you know when she makes a statement like that, I need to check this place out. I ordered what my friend recommended me: Lao Sausage, Lad Na (she told me to get jalapenos on the side but I forgot), Nam Khao, Sakoo, Laap Beef, and Sticky Rice. My friend recommended the Khao Poon as well but my family wanted to try the Crab Fried Rice and Tom Yum Soup so we got that instead. Oh mannnn, food came out quick and it was all delicious! My top favorite was the Lao Sausage and the Nam Khao. When the dish is supposed to be spicy, they definitely delivered the spice especially with those peppers! I was curious about their homemade fried beef jerky so I got that to go. Jerky has a nice texture with a sweet and savory flavor covered with sesame seeds. Definitely will go great with a cold beer on a hot summer day. Overall, great service with amazing food. Highly recommend coming here! read more

Excellent excellent Lao style restaurant! While the food may appear to be very similar to Vietnamese style food, there are some subtle differences. There's more of a focus on curry noodle soups and sausages. The Chicken Curry Noodle Soup is delicious with lots of tender shredded chicken and crunch cabbage that goes really well with the noodles. The broth has great deep flavors without being overly spicy and doesn't overwhelm the chicken flavor. Lao style sausages have a fantastic snap to them while staying very juicy on the inside. Rare Ethnic Cuisine No. 67 - Laotian Cuisine. Sap Sap just have Grand Open. My Yelp Friend Anna told me about this restaurant and we have try them at the second day of Grand Opening. This restaurant over take previously Vietnamese restaurant. Now it has Laotian cuisine. Time to have changed in this restaurant. They sold out the food first day and force them to open their restaurant at 1pm second day due new kitchen work for preparation the ingredients. I would said they are not smoothly open yet. Order, food delivery, and service are not really on track yet. Fortunately the taste is there. We waited our food for 1.1 hours. Obviously they mixed up our order. Service did get to us the beginning, was not check back later. These are the item they need to improve. One thing for sure my wife has said is to simplify the menu call out. It is difficult for the American to call out the Lao food name and it can be easily mixed up. We start with the chicken wings and the Laap Beef. The wing is really good coating. The laap beef has good spicy item. It is good spicy to me but my friend said is too hot for them. But the restaurant did offer to lower the spiciness at the end for my friend to take home. We also has the Thum Mua Sap Sap Style - it is the salad with vermicelli noodle, shrimp and the beef meat ball. It was delicious. I like the style. We also have the the Laotian sausage. I like this the most. The last dish is the homemade fried pork jerky. The pork is slice with marinated sesame seed. I like this dish too. Overall they need be on track. We found Sap Sap by other reviewers on I Love St. Pete FB group. So glad we found the review because we all loved the food at Sap Sap. We started with Lao Iced Coffee, Egg Rolls, Lao sausage, Potstickers, beef jerkey and sticky rice. For our meals we ordered beef Fried Rice, Crispy Lard Na and Pad se ew. Everything came out quickly and was really good. My husband loved the spice level of the Pad Se ew. We decided to place a to go order as well for our neighbors. Tonight we just found a new favorite restaurant. I'm totally blown away at how authentically delicious the food at Sap Sap is. Having lived in Thailand for two years I know how difficult it is to find authentic Thai food that hasn't been Americanized. Ingredients like paprika in Pad Thai that don't even exist in Thailand. And finding Laotian food is even more difficult. Someone of Laotian descent recently recommended I try Sap Sap, and I'm so glad we did tonight. The restaurant is small, but very clean and nicely decorated. It's easy to miss driving down Park Blvd towards US 19. They have their own parking lot, which means you don't have to fight for parking with customers of other businesses. The food is a mix of Laotian, Thai, and even a couple Vietnamese items. One of my favorite dishes while living in Thailand was Laab (also spelled Larb). This is a ground meat salad with lime, fish sauce, onions, cilantro, and ground toasted rice. Many Thai restaurants add things like Nam Prik Pao, a chili paste that does not belong. Sap Sap's Laab with beef was simply amazing! I immediately had flashbacks to meals with a Laotian family I worked with in Maine. Served with sticky rice, which is traditionally is eaten by hand, the diced beef and the fresh, vibrant ingredients was absolutely spot on. So, so good. Along with this we had two Vietnamese items, Fresh Spring Rolls and Bánh Xéo, a delicate, crispy crepe with shrimp, ground pork, bean sprouts, and onions served with a light, tangy dressing. I've had Bán Xéo numerous times in the last twenty years and this was definitely one of the best versions I've tried. So light and flavorful. The Fresh Spring Rolls were equally delicious. We also had a very good Tom Yum Goong soup and some very tasty Sai Gok, Laotian sausage. The owner herself waited on us, and was very warm and friendly. Answering any questions we had. If you have never tried Laotian food before, Sap Sap is a wonderful place to start. Very similar to Thai food, but with its own unique dishes as well. And many dishes on Thai menus actually originated in Laos. The North East of Thailand, Isaan, being a predominantly culturally Laotian area. Cute little place for good Laotian food. We loved our travels throughout Southeast Asia, including southern Laos. When I heard about Sap Sap Lao Cafe was opening up, I wanted to go to eat some of those dishes that we loved on our travels. We went with our kids. We were there early, so getting a table was easy, but there are only about 6 tables inside and 2 outside, so depending on your timing, you might just have to eat elsewhere! We started with the egg rolls and blanket shrimp. Both were well-fried and with good portion size. My husband ordered the pad see yew, but they forgot to put in his order. My kids ended up sharing their pork belly fried rice with him, and they all enjoyed it. I had the laap gai with sticky rice. My kids ate half of my sticky rice. The laap gai (medium spice, which is very spicy by most American standards) had excellent flavors and absolutely reminded me of meals along the Mekong. I also had a Lao iced coffee, which was very sweet but had a smooth coffee taste. Sadly, they don't serve beer, but otherwise, I consider this place a perfect stop when we can't actually fly to Laos to scratch an itch. read more

We eat Lao and Thai food very often and we cook a lot at home but this wasn't anywhere near what we were expecting with all the high reviews. My mom and I have been going here maybe once every two weeks since they've opened. There's not many Laos places for us to frequent, but there are a couple, but this one is our favorite (and yes we're Laotian). The aesthetics inside are super cute for this area. There's seating indoors and a few outdoors. But we always sit inside. Every single time we've gone we have been sat immediately no matter the volume of the restaurant. There's always only one server who also handles the register and all the front of the house operations it seems and she's attentive and pretty efficient especially for one person. My mom and I alway get the papaya salad (you can choose your spice level and we always get the hottest one) and it isn't too spicy at all but it's probably my fourth favorite papaya salad of all time. We also get the fried chicken wings every time and it is so so good! The breading is perfect and the wings always come out super hot and fresh - love it! Another one of our favorites is the lao sausage. This is one of my favorite lao staples ever and this restaurant makes it sooooooo good. Comparable to how my grandmother makes it (and it was my favorite recipe for 20 years til she stopped). It's the sweet lao sausage not the spicy/salty sausage and usually restaurants don't have the sweet one. So I'm obsessed! Lastly, we always get the tapioca balls stuffed with minced ground pork and they also make this dish really good compared to all of them I've tried from Laotian people making it or the versions they make at the Laos grocery store. The fried beef jerky was delicious with the a mild heat and crisp texture; wasn't too dry. The lao sausage was good but wish it had a bit more salt/savory flavor. Certain pieces of the grilled squid were wonderful with the seafood's natural sweetness but some were bitter/burnt. I love the rice tapioca noodles in the khao piek sen. I was honestly not expecting much from this restaurant but I was pretty impressed with the food! The venue is pretty quaint so it's great for small groups of people (2-4). I found the service to be spot on, straight to the point and fast. The tapioca balls were phenomenal! Really was not sure covering a punch of flavor. When they brought it to the table I thought to myself "no sauce huh!?", but it didn't need it. The only thing is I had to order more salad greens coz they really didn't give enough for it to be filling. The soup with tapioca noodles were ridiculously good! Reminded me of a Cambodian soup my mother-in-law makes. The chicken wings came very generic, it's meant to be eaten with the sauce which took it to the next level. Authentic Lao Food? No way. Definitely had to try this place out. Nice little spot in Pinellas Park. Small parking lot but was able to park next door. The dining room is small too, so if coming with a group please keep that in mind. Our group split up half outside, half inside. The service was excellent. Orders we're put in timely fashion and drinks came out accordingly with apps and food following. We ordered a plethora of dishes including sticky ribs, crispy egg rolls, Lao sausage, sticky rice, with some Jeow Bong Dip! Must have. Entrees included fried rice, simple but delicious. Pad Thai, sweet and tangy and drunken noodle! Sauce was spot on and the noodles are heavenly soft and chewy jsut how rice noodles should be. Lao dishes included Kaopoon, a curry soup. Deliciously fragrant and the strong hints of lemongrass topped this dish off! Don't forget to add quail eggs. Kaopiek is a true dish for hangovers and this gem did not disappoint. Thick and gooey noodles in the most basic broth in the world. Move over chicken noodle, this is my comfort soup. Crispy pork belly elevated this bad boy to the top! Oh! Did I mention I washed all this down with a delicious Thai Tea done right? Yes. The 80 degree day after Xmas heat needed something refreshing and it was it. Hands down a truly delicious, authentic Laos restaurant! Went here with my boyfriend and his cousins who are Laos and they had great things to say as well! The overall vibe is incredibly cute and relaxing, with perfect spots set up particularly for "Instagram-worthy" photo ops. Nice outdoor patio seating as well. The place is a bit on the smaller side so I'd advise you go during non-peak hours to grab a good seat. Everything is cooked fresh and in house. I was particularly happy that I could have the chicken Laab made customized to my liking, as I am allergic to an ingredient that is typically made with it. I drove by Sap Sap Lao Cafe a couple times before finally dedicating a dinner here with my boyfriend! At first glance, a lot of the main courses here are similar to what you can find at a Thai restaurant. But if you think about it, Laos is really close to Thailand, so it makes sense. We started off with the Lao Marinated Fried Chicken. The marinade didn't have much flavor. It is very crispy and HOT! It comes to your table straight from the fryer! Our waitress had to warn us before we burned our mouths! These wings come with a sweet plum sauce. It tastes good with the wings. I suggest if you like spicy food to ask for their hot chili powder. The powder is home made! Just a little sprinkle will make a great difference in spice level, so be careful! Next, I got the Laap Gai. There is so much spices and fresh red onion going on in this dish. The spices are so heavy that it gives the dish a crunch! I got my sticky rice to go with it. The sticky rice comes in a cute little bamboo pouch! At least, I think the pouch is made of bamboo. This dish is super flavorful and fresh! My bf for the Khao Poon. My first reaction when trying his dish was that the coconut soup tastes so buttery, it could be mistaken for coconut milk tea! The soup may look orange and that might mean it is spicy, but it is not! We found Sap Sap Lao Café in a listing from our credit card advantage dining locations and decided to check them out. Laotian food isn't something we're super familiar with. At first glance, some of the dishes look similar to Thai food, which we love. (more on that later). The restaurant is on a reasonably busy road and is sandwiched between several buildings and easy to miss. The parking lot has just a few spots, but there were only one or two other cars when we arrived. The place is small, with several banquettes along the wall and a few other tables, with one or two tables on the front porch. The décor is a mix of tiled walls, cute signs with quotes, and Asian-inspired art. The staff greeted us right away and offered us a table. Staff were all wearing masks, and a table at the entrance had hand sanitizer available. The menu is good size, but you can see where they have dropped off a few items since their opening in February. We chatted with the server whose mother makes all the delicious food. She could not be sweeter or more helpful. I was torn between two very different dishes, and she offered some advice. We also talked about the spice level of Laotian food vs. Thai food. Spicy Laotian food is no joke - her mom roasts and grinds the pepper seasoning, and it is SMOKIN HOT. I love 'Thai spicy food, even in Thailand, but would probably not go full heat on any of their spicy dishes. We started off with an order of their Fried Chicken Wings ($6.95) - Marinated Laotian style. They come with about a half dozen wing pieces, both flat and drums. They were super crispy, fresh out of the fire, and piping hot. I'm not sure about the Laotian marinade as they were flavorful, but not anything pronounced. They were served with a small side of a Sweet Chili type sauce that would have made them much better tossed on the hot wings. But, overall, they were delicious. My husband started with Fresh Spring Rolls ($5.95). There were stuffed with Shrimp, Pork, Mint, Lettuce, Cilantro, Carrots, and Vermicelli Noodles. They were packed full of ingredients, bundled tightly, and everything was fresh and flavorful. The Peanut sauce on the side was thick with lots of flavor. Shortly after our appetizers arrived, the entrees came to the table. Which was good because we each set aside half of our appetizer to take home for later. I opted for the Duck Noodle Soup ($12.95). This is something I don't always see on menus and absolutely LOVE. The bowl was filled with Yellow Noodles, and Duck Broth flavored with Bean Sprouts, Green Onion, and Cilantro. It was a nice portion for the price with LOTS of Duck. It had boneless pieces of meat as well as a whole duck leg. There were bits of crispy skin as well. I asked for a little Fish Sauce and Pepper Flakes to add a bit more flavor - which is where I learned about the peppers her mom grinds. DO NOT just dump these peppers on randomly. You'll regret it later. Use just a touch! My husband when with Pad Woosen with Chicken ($11.95). It came with stir-fried Clear Noodles, Eggs, Scallions, Onions, Sprouts with plenty of Chicken. While this is not a 'spicy' dish, he asked for a bit of heat. For the first time in forever, there was actually noticeable heat when he ordered a dish this way. Really well done! I love Asian food, but I struggle finding anything remotely authentic in Florida. The ONLY other restaurant that I love is One Family Korean, but that requires a trip to Tampa versus being on our side of the bridge. We came to our vacation house yesterday, and after being away for a while, you end up with endless chores and grocery shopping. We strive to eat as much WFPB but that's really tough when eating out. WHAT.A.GEM. The fact that I found a place that makes and sells Khao Poon amazes me. I was introduced to hmong food from family and was lucky enough to have tried many authentic homemade dishes. As lucky as I was, it was also so difficult to find anywhere that served these dishes AND be good on top of that. I am so happy to have found this place and love the food... and the fact that its only 15 minutes Way!!!!! The Laos sausage, sticky rice, (hopefully they will have jeow next time I visit- it aint the same without it), and khao poon was all so good. I cant wait to go back for more. Its definitely a comfort food of mine that was hard to find/get before, so it makes me so happy to have this place so close by!!! read more

Great menu and service. Not a big place but very clean interior. A few tables on Patio dining available too. Food was good. Laos coffee and thai tea was good. We had tom yum soup and a few other dishes--all very tasty although one dish (noodle dish) became gelatinous and kinda grossed me out. Flavor was good. The thum muk hoong (Lao papaya salad) is DELICIOUS and SOOOO satisfying!! My friend and I asked for spicy - like, super spicy. They did not disappoint. It was spicy, tart, slightly sweet, just enough salt, and oh so refreshing. Perfection on our taste buds. We also ordered the nam khao and it was also DELICIOUS!! I have a soft spot for good nam khao. Sap Sap's was fresh with a sensational taste and texture. It's sweet, tart, salty, crispy with lots of fresh herbs and lettuce to wrap it all in. My friend and I both ordered it to-go so we can eat it later at home. By the way, the staff asked me if my dog was a service animal and I answered yes. She seated us right away. Tampa and it's neighboring areas are slowing growing a solid base of Asian restaurants. Definitely come here to eat and support this wonderful small business!! read more
