When the waiter placed this small plate in front of me, I thought: Oh, I guess I'll be mooching off of my partner's lunch. NOPE, it was the perfect amount. A wonderful variety of fresh fish was a decent value for $35. It also included a small salad and miso soup which were not much to write home about but were nice starters to the main event. Warning about the omakase: come extremely hungry! It seems deceivingly non stuffing but I've had to pass my nigiri to my partner because sushi should never been taken home. Today my partner struggled to finish his omakase. I had to help him -- cue violin music. Sasabune will provide a complimentary dessert on your birthday if ordered in advance. Today we had the black sesame cheesecake and the time before we had the green tea cheesecake. Both were pretty good. Wait service could have be better if there was a second waiter. I felt bad for the one kind server having to deal with multiple tables. Otherwise, Sasabune is our usual go to for sushi. Wow. What a miserable experience the fourth time in a row. Since we live in La Canada and are proximate - it's easy enough to get take away without seafood risk. I've never once had a seamless experience here. Our family having lived in Tokyo and Hawaii are no strangers to the world of Omakase. We are happy to pay top dollar for the excellence of the craft but do not tolerate sloppiness, attitude and constant errors. Today was the very last straw for me. As I waited :90 minutes for the bumbling Front of the House employees (2) to gather the three (3) missing items from my order. Then I was told to wait outside while they figured out their bloody mess with my order and I said that would never happen and took a seat in their Sushi bar. The only time any expeditious action was taken was during my protest to sit indoors when El Jeffe Sushi chef screamed at me that those EMPTY seats were only for Omasake customers - of which there were NONE. Perhaps Sasabune does better in its international locations but GET YOUR ACT together in Los Angeles because my next call will be to my friend the Food Editor at the Los Angeles Times AND the food safety board so Sasabune can have a more recent inspection. read more

Plenty of parking in the structure. Service was great and attentive. Made a reservation and was able to get seated on time. We ordered the premium ($200) and regular omakase ($100). The presentation and experience overall was great. My only issue with the place was the value as we spent a lot but still left hungry. I've been to other sushi restaurants and have ordered their omakase and have left full. A couple things we really liked was the Japanese matcha whaved ice at the end, the baked mussel, the toro and any of the white fishes. If I ever decide to come back, I probably would just select the things I like vs going for the omakase. read more

Ordered takeout from their quarantine menu for Yelp's Big Night In, which offers 20% off a la carte items and steeply reduced prices for the chef's choice options of 5, 8, or 10 pieces, all of which include a blue crab roll. It took about an hour between order and pick up time, and I had to bring my housemate so she could jump out to get it. The restaurant location is on the second floor of a sort of restaurant mall with parking in garages close-by but not directly in front of, so there's virtually no way to easily park outside and run in to get it. We ordered two 10 piece specials, a crab roll, a yellowtail roll, and a tuna roll. Everything was included, and they also threw in three cups of soy sauce and three cups of ginger (they correctly guessed the order was for three). They also left a cute thank you note. Most of the fish was absolutely delicious, including shrimp, halibut, salmon, toro, butterfish, uni, and one I didn't recognize (perhaps red snapper)? These pieces almost melted in my mouth and had very little fish flavor, also the rice for all pieces was perfectly prepared. The other three pieces, however, were on the chewier side and smelled more of old fish. I was glad to see they use real blue crab (obviously they would), but was disappointed that 2 of the 4 roll pieces had bits of shell in them, which my two housemates experienced as well. I also noticed that the ginger smelled sort of the way mildewy clothes smell, and tasted a bit off. Not sure what was up with that. The sushi was good overall, though, and you can't beat the takeout prices. If you've been meaning to come here for a while, or are just looking for some higher quality sushi and don't mind the drive to Glendale, I recommend bringing a friend who can run fast and trying out Sushi Sasabune! read more

Fresh sushi, but man, does it hit your wallet hard! In lieu of the omakase, we decided to order a la carte for the specific fish we wanted, and it ended up costing about $200 for tuna sashimi, 8 orders of nigiri, 2 orders of hand rolls, 2 cut rolls, and a beer. I also did not expect Glendale sales tax to be 10.25%. Ouch. My favorites of the night were the salmon nigiri ($6) and the blue crab hand roll ($8). Each order of nigiri comes with two pieces and for some of the fish, they prepare it two different ways (FYI, in case you are sharing an order with your plus one). Market price in early December was $18 for the toro nigiri and $20 for the uni nigiri. Service was a bit strange. They weren't as friendly as the servers in other sushi places I've dined at and some of their mannerisms were a bit awkward. They also almost forgot about my two orders of uni, which I was waiting for til the very end of the meal. All in all, it was a deliciously fresh meal and I would likely return for their lunch special menu or mini pre-fixe menu. Not sure of the parking arrangements around here, as I walked over after watching a movie at Studio Movie Grill. There is also no sign outside on the building. I'm the biggest Sasabune fan you'll ever meet. I've been to the one in Honolulu and was so happy to find out that there was one in Glendale. I live in Santa Barbara and have to commute to LA often for work. Sounds like a drag, but it's absolutely worth it since I get to dine here. The staff are always so friendly and attentive. The chef is so warm and takes pride in what he does, but isn't stuffy about it. Now to the fish -- why I absolutely love this place is that it stands on just simple, quality fish. Of course every top notch LA sushi restaurants have great quality, but they don't get what this guys got. It's all about who gets the next best thing after the Japanese market. Every fish just melts in your mouth. For all my people in LA, Glendale is worth driving to just for this place. read more

After having a really bad experience at another location, I was skeptical about coming here, but I'm so glad I did. My friend told me it's a different owner, so I had decided to give this place a try. This Sasabune was so good! Everyone was really nice, the chef was friendly and he made really good sushi. Even though it was during a slow Monday lunch time, everything was fresh and delicious, their rice was perfect! Uni was sweet, salmon melted in my mouth, oysters were so fresh and creamy, even eels were cooked to perfection. It was so good I forgot to take pictures for some pieces. Tried this place out for the first time to celebrate my friend's birthday. The ambience was spacious and comfortable. Service was pleasant. The waitress answered our questions. So we decided to order 2 premium omakases and 1 regular/classic omakase. There was no menu to let us know what we were getting. I understand it's chef's choice. However, this was not my first time having okakase, so I know there should be a list/menu to let the customers know what to expect. I feel like the premium and the regular omakases were almost the same fish. Why did I pay the extra $50 for premium then? We never got the uni. All in all, the omakases were decent, but I wouldn't order it again from this place. I might try the other menu items if I go back next time. We paid $525 for this meal for 3 people. read more

So we felt the pre-fixe menu will control our portions and not over eat. We have a bad habit of over ordering. Miso soup - not too bad Appetizer - they claimed the tuna albacore was from up north & baked clam/oyster Entree - 4 plates of different sushi. The best one was the cod sushi and that was about it. Excellent melt in your mouth sushi! Reminds me of Sugar Fish. My coworker was saying how this was one of his favorite sushi places, but was a bit fancy. The lunch specials are pretty good though - although he said the prices went up. We came here for lunch, parked in the lot, which was convenient. It was around 12pm and luckily wasn't too busy. There's two lunch specials, one that's $23 and one that's $28. We got the $28 which include sashimi over rice, and we all got the tuna because my coworker said it was particularly good here. It came with miso soup, seaweed salad and cucumbers,three sushi rolls - salmon, tuna and albacore, the sashimi on rice - could get salmon, tuna or albacore and the crab handroll. When we want to celebrate (birthdays, anniversary, New Years) Sasabune is our go-to fancy sushi place. We get a single omakase and a smattering of other rolls and nigiri. Everything is fresh and delicious. Well worth the money! Quick note, during Covid we do pick up and order directly from them. The last two times we had to wait a fairly long time even though we arrived at the appointed time. Maybe they wait until you arrive to start the preparations to keep it fresh? Not sure, just bring a book or something to do in case you need to wait. read more

I think my absolute favorite was probably the sea urchin from Santa Barbara. Near the end of the course I did order another sea urchin from Japan, which had a more briny taste and was creamier but I felt the Santa Barbara see urchin had a more mild custard flavor that I really liked. Solid Omakase experience, a high quantity of tastings with 10-12 plates per person. Incredible service, the chefs and servers are very kind. We got the regular and Japanese Omakase which had some more special cuts like monkfish liver and uni, but our favorites were the toro sashimi and butterfish. Our honest take was we didn't feel the quality was strong enough to keep us coming back, the fish tasted fresh but it wasn't melt in your mouth sushi. The cuts are thick and not as tender, which I'd at least expect from bluefin tuna and like fish types. Nonetheless it's an experience to try. read more

What a find! My daughter and I requested the omakase (chef's choice) and were seated at the sushi bar. We were highly impressed with the care that goes into the preparation and creation of each individual offering. The quality of the fish is evident from the first look, and is confirmed by the first bite. This is among the best sushi I have ever tasted. The toro tuna was like butter--so velvety and delicious. The crab hand roll was packed with crab and had a very satisfying crunch from the seaweed. There was nothing in the order that I would not gladly eat again. The wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce are created in house, and are excellent. The service was outstanding; prompt without hovering. And extremely polite and friendly. The only thing keeping me from giving them an additional star is the baked mussel was nothing spectacular and felt out of place in the courses and the included dessert for Valentine's for an additional 30 dollars over their normal price at every tier was just lychee gelato I mean a matcha cake or something a bit more involved seemed to be more worth the up charge. Would return due to the affordability. Overall enjoyment of omakase I would recommend Sushi Enya or Sushi Zo if you planned in breaking the bank. read more

It's definitely quite filling as the pieces are large and also very fresh. I wished they provided uni as an option as that is my absolute favorite and for $85 a person before tax although the sushi was extremely fresh it didn't appear that each piece was worth the $5 price tag given that some of the pieces were simple and we didn't feel like there was anything exotic. I have been to Sushi Sasabune in BH and enjoyed it very much, so I was excited to try the one in Glendale. I went on a Monday night and it was very empty. I enjoyed it because I didn't have to wait or anything, but it was also a little weird because the waitress and sushi chef was just watching me eat. No matter since I was here to eat anyways. I sat at the bar and decided to go for the omakase. I didn't remember everything that I had. But, I enjoyed the toro, salmon, and the yellowtail. I didn't enjoy a few pieces because I thought it was a little fishy for me, which was surprising because for the amount I would have thought that the fish would be super fresh. But, I since the majority of the fish was so good, I didn't think too much of it. The omakase that I ordered did not come with an uni, so I also ordered that. It was very delicious. I would suggest ordering one. I would definitely come back here again. (Maybe not quite often since it is a little pricey). There is a parking lot and Sasbune provided me with a validation.
