I don't get the appeal at all. We walked in around 6:30 PM on a Sunday night. One of the chefs greeted us, but didn't motion for us to sit down. Being our first time, we thought we had to wait for a host. The waitstaff makes eye contact with us several times, but no one says anything. We decided to just grab a table right by the door. We ordered the bulgogi platter for our young daughters to share, the California roll, the amazing roll, the sunset roll, and the lake Forest roll. The bulgogi came out first on a hot plate the size of my hand. I do not have big hands. The meat was diced so tiny that I could barely pick them up with chopsticks. My girls devoured it and we were contemplating ordering more, but nobody even came near us so we could ask for a menu. My kids settled on finishing their rice with soy sauce. Sad. Almost an hour later our rolls come out. They were all so bland and fell apart the second you picked them up with chopsticks. The spicy tuna tasted like puréed fish with no spicy mayo mixed in. The avocado was crunchy for some reason, and the rest was just so blah. The fact that there were constantly flies around our table didn't help the situation either. $120 later (tax and tip included), we walked out SO disappointed. I found out about this place from a post through the Rancho Santa Margarita on FB so decided to try it with my son. Everything was superb especially the hospitality. We were immediately welcomed. I ordered the Alaska Roll very fresh and yummy. My son ordered the Hot Alaska Roll and told the Sushi Chefs it was the best baked salmon he ever tasted. Definitely will come back and bring hubby. We use to go to Zen sushi until it closed down and after trying around this is our new local spot. Consistent good quality fresh fish (we've eaten here more times than I'd like to admit and never had an upset stomach) . The guy who runs it is extremely helpful and nice, and you walk away from any interaction with him feeling happier. My wife wishes they had a couple more raw salmon roll options however that doesn't stop us from coming back. Another perk is they have a punch card so you get rewarded for your visits. read more

I had a feeling that a Japanese joint in Lake Forest couldn't live up to those in more densely Asian populated cities and I was right. I need to go with my gut. This is the 4th Japanese place I've been to here in LF and only 1 was good (this place not being one of them). I think the food was mediocre and did the trick for lunch but I will not be frequenting this place in the near future (or ever). I think I enjoy food too much to waste more belly real estate. Came here with my picky-about-sushi boyfriend and we both really enjoyed it! We came on a weekend night and sat at the bar. The chef behind the counter was so friendly and constantly interacting with the many regulars also seated at the bar. He even gave us a little complimentary creation. The rest of the staff was also friendly and some members seemed like they were family, which was so cute. We ended up ordering even more than we planned because everything was so good. My favorite was the albacore roll with crunchy onion. And also their handrolls (spicy tuna and yellowtail were yum)!! I don't even remember everything we ordered because I ate it all so fast. A regular here. I always order to go and they are always very prompt in getting to go orders out. Last night I ordered for my girlfriend and I pretty close to their closing time. Upon returning home I realized that we were missing a roll. It was too late to call so I went back the next day to ask if they could remake the order. They remembered me and apologized profusely. Sat me down and remade the order and offered me a special made dish while I waited for the roll to get done. Excellent customer service and professional staff. Best sushi in south OC! read more

This last Sunday was our 12-Year Anniversary and we were debating what we wanted. We talked about Italian, we talked about Chinese and American, but we unanimously agreed on sushi. And when sushi is spoken, the name "Sashimi" in Lake Forest is never far behind it! My wife wore a classy, elegant dress with modest heels and I put on a nice, Hawaiian-style black shirt and my Gold Cup Sperry top-sliders. And where did we go all dressed up? Yup, with all the options at our fingertips, we still concluded on Sashimi Sushi!! We drove over from two cities away talking about how long it's been and how good it was going to be. Our hearts quickly sank when arrived only to realize we were almost an hour early! They weren't supposed to open for another 45 minutes, at least! We poked our heads in and asked if they were open. With big smiles, they waved us in and said we could sit down early. Love that customer service!! They could have easily asked us to wait a bit more, but they got started early for us. Not long after we sat down the owner/manager came out, Steve, and he remembered us! We haven't been there in over a year and he could recall that I always ask for extra eel sauce lol! I praised him for his memory, we caught up for a bit, and then it was off to the races. Steve was so thankful we had chosen his establishment for our anniversary. He made us feel like royalty and brought us some complimentary edamame while we waited for our table to be covered in sushi rolls haha. We ordered WAY TOO MUCH. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, but it wasn't bigger than my resolve to finish what I had started. I'm no quitter! Steven was on top of our needs, on top of our drinks, and we never felt like a burden or rushed to leave. We were honored guests that day, and it was absolutely worth it. And I know what Japanese food is supposed to taste like. This ain't it. Come on people. I came here because you gave this place a 4.5 star rating. Menu: B. Just looking at the picture menu, I can tell that this is not anywhere near authentic Japanese sushi. It's fake. And way overpriced. Rolls are anywhere from $11 to above $20. Most rolls are around $18. I had a feeling that I wasn't going to like this place so I just ordered their cheap chicken teriyaki/cal roll combo (which they recommended when I asked for her opinion on what is good here). $9.99 Miso soup: D. Horrible. I don't think I've ever passed up finishing my miso soup. I love miso soup. How could they mess it up? That's so hard to do. Bleh! Pre meal: C. Edamame beans. Another warning sign. Good Japanese places never serve edamame. They serve tsukemono. That's pickled cabbage salad. Salad dressing: C. Nothing special. California roll: C. Nothing special. Fake crab. Chicken teriyaki: F. They cut it into very small bits and spread it out across the bottom of the plate to make it look like a full serving. I almost took a double take when she brought it out. Uninspiring sauce. Chicken was very dry because of the fact that I think they start out with such a thin cut of chicken. I left half of it uneaten because it was a chore to consume. Servers: A. They were actually very nice and attentive. Came by a couple times to ask me if I liked my food. She saw that I left my chicken uneaten. I told her it was too dry. She felt bad. I'm going to have to pick up something else now on my way back to work. If you want below average Americanized Japanese food, this is your place. Great tasting fresh sushi in Lake Forest! We've tried some other places around and Sashimi definitely has one of the more fresh tasting fish. Plenty of parking and they have a stamp card. A lot of their rolls come with spicy tuna which some more variety would be nice but we've enjoyed the Amazing Roll and Martini Roll and keep coming back. Exhausted from a 7 hour drive, we were looking for something close to our hotel. A search for "Japanese food" on Yelp led us to this hidden gem. We knew it was the right choice when Steve answered the phone enthusiastically, ready to take our order. Steve packaged our takeout with waters and what turned out to be the most AMAZING sushi ever. Incredible customer service, delicious food, good vibes.... Needless to say we were back the next night for more. Our eat-in experience was even better than takeout, once again incredible food and friendly, kind, and accommodating service. Seated quickly and food arrived promptly. Steve and the rest of the chefs/staff are very willing to make changes to your order to accommodate your needs/tastes/preferences. Rolls were crafted to perfection; fresh and flavorful! We would recommend the Dragon Roll and Red California Roll but honestly I don't think you can go wrong. The menu includes a variety of cooked rolls and terriyaki bowls offer a selection for those who are unable to eat raw fish. Loved watching people leaving with smiles on their faces. We came on a Friday night at around 6:45 PM. My boyfriend had to flag someone down to ask if we could put in our order, because the staff did not check on us (even though we had already been sitting there for 10/15 minutes). After we placed our order, we waited at least 35 minutes before asking our waiter to check on our food. I thought that maybe it was taking so long, because they wanted to bring all our food at once. That was not true at all... Our order came out one by one, and some items from our order never even made it onto the table. OUR ORDER: Toro- tasted not fresh Yellowtail cheek- tasted ehh and had a very rough texture Ponzu sauce- was very sugary Salmon skin hand roll- actually 10/10!! Blue fin sushi/salmon sushi- good AND the unagi and live sweet shrimp NEVER CAME! We ended up leaving the restaurant at 8:30 pm. They did apologize for taking so long, but this ruined our Friday night. I felt like they wasted our time, and if they really felt bad, they should have comped something. My wife and I have eaten here a couple of times and both times we loved it! We ordered a Caterpillar roll and a Baked Alaska roll. The Caterpillar roll has unagi, avocado slices, cucumber, nori and rice. All perfectly assembled with incredibly fresh ingredients. The Hot Alaska roll is baked salmon over a California roll. Savoury and different than usual sushi. Both were delicious. The restaurant provides edamame as a small snack while you wait. We also had green tea to complement the meal. The portions were a good size as well as tasting wonderful. We ate outside on their delightful patio. The service was warm, very friendly and enthusiastic. In fact, couldn't ask for better service. The Amazing Roll was actually amazing it was fresh tasting, the right amount of spices and it was huge! The Sunrise Roll was pretty good, it was fresh and had a great balance of flavors. The Rainbow Roll was average, the rice was a it too dry but the fish were fresh. Prices are a bit high but that seems like it's the case for the area. The customer service was friendly but the waiter was very slow, he kept chatting it up with another waiter and a sushi chef. It took the waiter a good 10 minutes to bring out our check after we had asked him for it twice. The did place seemed clean. They also have a few TVs that played basic cable channels. We've only done take-out (cuz Covid), but are looking forward to eating there since everyone's so friendly!
