We have gotten catering from Satchel's on multiple occasions and the most recent was for our Thanksgiving dinner. It was nice not to have to worry about the cooking. We ordered turkey with sides. The turkey came whole and we were able to make stock out of the bones as well. The sides were flavorful and tasty. I highly recommend doing this and not having to worry about cooking and cleaning on an already stressful holiday. I will do this again next year and would recommend it to others looking to spend more time doing other things besides cooking. read more

Obsessed with the greens here, get the large side!! . The Brisket with house bbq or simply by itself it perfect. The kielbasa is delicious, I love their spicy mustard sauce that they offer with this dish. Pulled chicken sandwiches come on a brioche bun, do not hesitate to sauce it up, the house made bbq sauces really add and elevate the experience. Potato salad is ok and the Mac n cheese is pretty creamy. Honestly they have something for everyone. Sample all the goods with a mixed meat plate, that also comes with two sides, you'll be happy you did. read more

While their regular menu is really delicious, tonight we ordered a special item: Chinese short ribs. Oh my Holy Lord! These ribs were literally fall off the bone tender. The other night I went to Satchels Barbecue, on Washtenaw Ave. Granted it was 8:30, and they close at 9, I was very disappointed that they were pretty much out of everything I wanted to order. I've been here before and this was the case as well. So, I couldn't get chicken, mashed potatoes, rice, beans or the bbq bowl. I did get pork with extra meet. The flavor was ok but a little on the dry side. I also got a small side of Mac and cheese and it really wasn't good at all. I love Mac and cheese and this one did absolutely nothing for me. The cornbread, which I ordered two off was the best thing I ordered. Great corn bread with butter And honey. I spent 13.00 and only liked the corn bread. Not sure if I should give them another chance?! What do you all think? read more

I've been by here dozens of times...finally we stopped in early on a Sunday as they started service. We were greeted by friendly and very helpful guys who were eager to make us feel right at home. I explained my food allergies and these were handled with ease and no problem, as they helped me figure out what would be safe from their chalkboard menu of fabulous food. The food--we had chicken and brisket, with a variety of sides. For my gluten and dairy allergies, I stayed with the collard greens and Satchel stew, which were both great. The brisket rice bowl was tasty and just enough for lunch. My husband had a pick-2 of chicken plus brisket, with baked beans and Mac and cheese with corn bread. He enjoyed it all. The place is clean, organized and food is plated quickly. While there, people came for take out (they had called ahead) and others started to come by for dine-in. A little bbq place that is hidden near Whole Foods that has survived for 12 years and through a pandemic is on to something....recommend you stop in and experience it for yourself. I was pleasantly surprised when I received my first Satchel's BBQ delivery. Everything was DELICIOUS and my guests really enjoyed their ribs (served dry with sauce on the side), cole slaw (non-creamy version), potato salad, corn bread, and mac & cheese. I've been craving for some BBQ food, so after my workout, I found my way to Satchel's.... I haven't been there since Feb 28, 2011... that was my first visit, not sure what kept me away for this long, but I'm glad I made I stopped by because a revisit was long over due. The parking lot was full... wasn't sure if they were all there to eat, but was able to find a lot in front of the restaurant... walked in and saw couple of tables that were occupied... lot has changed since my first visit... They replaced the paper plates with real ones... the paper menu board was replaced, they have a station for trash, bin for used dishes, etc... Ordering is simple though, which is good. I went with combo plate, briskets, pulled pork with mac-n-cheese and greens with water (sorry, I had given up soft drinks... but I'm happy to see they still kept the coke products). Got my food quickly since it wasn't busy... the dish came with corn bread (which I did not like on my first visit) and 2nd time wasn't any different... they got rid of texas toast or wasn't sure if it was extra, but it didn't come with my order... maybe it still comes with the ribs?? Ah yes, for the combo, you cannot get the rids.... it's $12.95 before taxes. The mac-n-cheese was at best 'below okay'... not sure if it was first batch from the morning (I went around 3pm), but it was lukewarm and just couldn't put my finger on the taste... the greens remained the same. The pulled pork was tender and juicy... I didn't find any that were dried out... as for the brisket... they were okay.... the meat wasn't juicy nor dried out... I tasted the smoke flavor from the pulled pork... but not in the brisket. As for their sauces, still the same. Originally, I was going to give them 3 stars, but had to rate them two stars for the following: - tables - they were dirty... I had to look around to find a decent table that I could sit on... the tables were not wiped down after it was used by other customers. - BBQ Sauce bottles - messy and sticky... the tops of the bottles were messy with sauces dripping down or on top... the sides of the bottles were sticky..... - Bins for used dishes - they were over flowing - both of them.... What got me was the dirty tables and sticky bottles... otherwise for the meat, it was decent and gets 3 stars from me. I'll be back again, but it won't take me two years... but I'll be back... and like all other BBQ joints, I guess timing is the essence to get the meats when they come off the smoker. read more

As you shared we did order slightly more than we would need, and there was leftover, but that too was quickly snatched up in to-go boxes!! The quality and taste of food was really really good as seen by the "no-leftovers" at the end of the day... The service, food, packaging, amount of food, timeliness of delivery, communication and invoicing, and now the follow up have all been very pleasant, timely, thorough, and much appreciated. Love Satchels! This is our families go-to any time we have large family get togethers like birthday parties or any reason to get together. We always appreciate the service they provide when we pick up our orders. And of course the food is delicious. We all have our favorites. We often get the pulled pork, pulled chicken, and kielbasa. I also really enjoy the brisket as well. For sides we all love the Mac and cheese. That is a family favorite and some of the best Mac and cheese that I have had. I am also a big fan of red beans and rice but you really can't go wrong with any of the sides. read more

We ordered catering from them for an office-wide lunch, and it was the single quickest, easiest, most painless catering order I've ever put in-- and I order at least one catering a week, every week of the year. Not only was it the easiest and one of the most affordable places we've ever gotten food from, but it arrived on time and piping hot, and everyone in the office loved it. One of our staff members is from Texas, and said that this was the best barbecue she's had in Michigan. If I could give more than five stars, I would. Will definitely be ordering again. read more

Ordered a half slab rib and a pulled pork plate with sides of Mac n cheese + potato salad.... The meat was tender (ribs slid off the bones), but lacked seasoning. The Mac n cheese tasted like it wasn't made today, and the potato salad was extremely bland. Also the BBQ suace tasted different than your average BBQ joint. I would give a 2 star, but it's my fault (I was on a hunt for soul food, but settled for satchels) for playing myself . Friendly staff, but if you're looking for flavor, Satchel's ain't it. read more

Their dry rub ribs are tender and delicious. The sides are very good, too, though the baked beans were slightly bitter (but I loved the small beans' texture). The cornbread is also very good. I believe this is the fourth time we have used Satchels and the food was excellent, as always.  The pulled pork had a nice moist smoky flavor, and the brisket is to die for, moist but not too fatty. The mac & cheese tasted great and was not wet and soupy. The beans, coleslaw, & cornbread were excellent too. Lots of complements from our guests. One of our guests, who used to be a professional cook, said it was the best BBQ she has ever had.
