Service was good. Facility -- inside and out -- seemed spotless, and I really do mean spotless. The food that we ordered was just okay. I ordered a Reuben on rye for takeout. The sandwich didn't travel very far. We sat in our car in the parking lot with our dogs and munched our food there. I have two complaints about the Reuben: (1) the corned beef seemed more like pastrami, and I was looking for corned beef, and; (2) the bread steamed in the wrapper and nearly disappeared, having taken on a mushy and unpleasant consistency. The result wasn't terrible -- we did eat it -- but nor was it very enjoyable. This is not the place for a Reuben. But read the other reviews -- lots of people really like this place. Ever since I moved back to Tucson, I have been thinking about giving this place a revisit. I finally got that chance recently. This place has been around for many years, and should be on the bucket list of places to visit for all UA students. I have some fond memories of visiting during my college days where I was made fun of for my love of their famous Susie Sorority. Alas I was not craving the Susie Sorority at the time, but I did get my second go to, their meatball sandwich! The sandwich tasted a lot different than I remembered. While the excellent tasting marinara sauce and toppings remained the same, it seems like they now have more of a pork meatball than beef. That is no means a dealbreaker, as it was excellent as usual. But I thought it was worth mentioning. The seating in here has improved tremendously, with the dining area kept clean. I was very pleased by my dining experience. read more

The wife is a U of A alumni (couldn't get into the U of Oregon). This is her absolute favorite spot. We were her 7 years ago...The Omar sub is truly a work of art from flavor Heaven. It is ridiculously good. It may provide a cure for variety of ailments as the combo of the bread, meat, and dressing is made from angel's tears. While it is not the ghastly location it once was, meaning the area around it, it is not exactly a walk up friendly place. You need to travel in a small pack so that at least one of you will survive. The service is awesome, the vibe is very college but the food (just get the Omar sub seriously it is that good) is an A (U of A) plus. read more

My son and I visited on Saturday afternoon. The man who took our order was very friendly. I'm on a strict diet and he offered suggestions on modifying the sandwich to make it healthier. Generally love this place! Atmosphere is great and the staff is always friendly and fast. Sandwiches are delicious. That's why I was so bummed to have gone in and have one of the employees refuse to help me because I was wearing a mask. I have no problem with folks who do not want to wear masks but it felt pretty horrible to be passed over and ignored for other customers just because I was wearing one. It should be noted that I wear a mask to protect my baby who has a compromised immune system. I do not appreciate being treated this way when I was happy to mind my own business and spend my money here. Super disappointing. During my undergrad years this place was a staple and a few visits a week wasn't uncommon. The roast beef sub I've been customizing since 1998 is still one of my favorite sandwiches on planet earth. They cool the roast beef rare, so it's tender and tasty. This hometown classic is definitely worth the wait! I say that because every time I'm back in Tucson, I seem to miss an opportunity to eat at Sausage Deli. Their hours are somewhat limited and they are closed on Sunday. Yet this joint still packs them in. Yesterday, while out and about with my mom, we were trying to figure out where to eat when we drove by the Sausage Deli. In spite of the laughable "road construction", access was very easy. And if you're worried about exiting to get to west bound Grant, just sneak behind the building and the Walgreens to get to First Avenue. Right where the original deli stood, unless I'm mistaken. I honestly haven't eaten here since I was in college, so it's been a while and this was my first visit to the new location. I remember the old building around the corner was cramped. The new Sausage Deli is cozy, so it's an upgrade. And the atmosphere and decor reminds me of an old favorite. Speaking of old favorites, my mom remembered her go to sandwich, the Susie Sorority. Her turkey and sprouts combination was light and refreshing on a hot day. I went for a sub named Bismarck. Can you say bold? Roast beef, pastrami, horseradish and sauerkraut have never tasted so good together. And you gotta love the pickles included in the wrapper! Despite the years since my last visit, and the wait time for our sandwiches, it was definitely worth it. The two folks working in the kitchen were working their butts off. Finally had the occasion to check out their new digs at (almost) the corner of Grant and Euclid (or 1st Ave., depending on how you want to look at it). Of course, the newish Walgreen's is on the very corner. I wonder if Walgreen's gave Sausage Deli a handsome sum to buy their plot of land, which was on the corner, so that they could rebuild? Probably. You know how Walgreen's is with their corners. You have your choice of 11 different breads, 9 meats, cheese, fixin's, and sides as well as drink and desserts. You can build your own or select one of their house specialties. Plenty of choices. I had the Bismark which is one of their hot sandwiches on a sub with roast beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, mustard, horse radish, and sauerkraut. It was really pretty good. Next time I think I would like to try it without the kraut. My wife had a simple turkey breast sandwich. She enjoyed it. I think what we like is the freshness of the deli meat and the bread. I tried the lemonade. Didn't like it. It is of the kind that tastes like it was made from ReaLemon® concentrate. Yuk. Some people like it, though. I just prefer mine to be like I use to make it from fresh lemons off of the tree when I was living in CA. Yeah, I know, I was spoiled. I do like Country Time Lemonade mix. It sure beats the Minute Maid stuff you find at fountains. Even the Tropicana brand. We ordered the cole slaw as a side. I love cole slaw. I'll eat any kind. Or so I thought. I took two bites of this sour tasting stuff and decided to take a third bite because I paid for it. But I couldn't eat it and threw it away. It was just this sour taste in it. I went to the location off of grant, coming from north midtown i had to flip a U turn to get to the restaurant. Getting there via first ave is recommended as there is an island in the middle of grant. This place serves sandwiches & they have beer and a bar. The seating is tables & chairs, and decent booths. Its located in a nice part of town and although I didn't check the bathroom the place seemed clean. I had a custom sub sandwich (10"s) with Turkey & provolone. The bread was decent (not stale) overall better than most sandwich shops ive been too so far. Its kinda like port of subs as far as the sandwich goes (port of subs is the best in my opinion). For Tucson i think this place is good. Customer service was decent, the cashier smiled and noticed when i came in. I cant see very well so I probably seemed out of it but she put up with my awkwardness. I usually bring my eyes with me (my wife) so i had to memorize what i wanted before hand from the online menu. So this review is for Sausage Deli, the original little hole-in-the-wall that was a staple of fine collegiate dining circa 1981-1985 at the UofA. My go to was what was inexplicably called the Suzie Sorority (Steve, please, explain that....) which was turkey and havarti with lettuce and tomato. As deli meats go, a somewhat healthy choice. Always had an Arnold Palmer with it, and mind you this seriously pre-dates the actual naming ANYTHING an Arnold Palmer. Back then it was just a tea/lemonade mix. So the SD is now updated, cleaner and about $4 more per sandwich. Oh, and they have beer now. Time marches on! One last thing. Back in the day they had one of my all-time favorite cartoons. It was a picture of the solar system - yes, Pluto was there then. And there was a 10th planet, named Checks in the Mail. That's funny. Seriously, God Bless the SD. Long may you run. read more

Oh my goodness. Sausage Deli spanks Subway so ridiculously hard! I recently went to Tucson for my spring break. I visited my friend that goes to the university down there. We were both hungry as we didn't eat that day. Sausage Deli really hit the spot. There were issues last year about me ordering the wrong thing at restaurants. So, this time, I let my friend order an Italian Grinder (Genoa Salami, Pastrami, Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Bell Pepper, Onions, Pepperoncini Peppers, Oregano & Italian Dressing...$6.99) and a side of potato salad. OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS. It was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had in my life! First of all, everything tasted amazingly fresh and clean. This is awesome because I didn't leave feeling gross and greasy. Second, that sub was absolutely massive. It puts all sandwich establishments such as subway and blimpies to shame. Furthermore, the staff was friendly. It isn't that difficult to give service with a smile, but an overwhelming majority of people just chose not to do that. Which is why I really appreciate the friendliness of the staff. In short: Great subs at a great price, fresh ingredients, friendly staff, get the italian grinder, I rcommend you stop by and give sausage deli a try. Two Words.. Hot Omar. This sub is the real deal. Imagine this. Sub with Salami, Turkey & Swiss Cheese, chopped Pepperoncini Peppers, Mayo (I asked for mayo instead of mustard) Italian Dressing and a green crispy bell pepper on top. The sandwich is warm and the cheese is perfectly melted into the bread but the rest of the ingredients are still cold. The flavors all come together perfectly in a warm filling I am so perfectly content with my decision type of way. The warm swiss, the soft bread and the spicy kick of the salami, Pepperocini Peppers and Italian Dressing work together magically. What was really good in this sandwich is that you could really taste the cheese. Sometimes in a sub, you ask for turkey and cheese and go why did I get cheese? This was a random find for me as I was killing time looking to eat before an appointment. It's one of the most unique sandwich joints I've been to. It has the feel of an old established sub joint, but it's in a nice clean new building. Spotless, if I say so myself. The staff is welcome and friendly and engaging and you can tell they have lots of regulars. I got the Black Dog, a sandwich made of homemade roast beef on an onion roll with other tasty things. As with many others, I hit the new Sausage Deli after being away from the UA for some years. The new building is a huge improvement over the cramped old space but the food is still as good as ever. The italian grinder is my standby but I wouldn't fault anyone for taking a spin on any of their other classics, especially based on some very flattering Yelp reviews of those items. Okay, I don't get it. I'm of the school of thought that says, "Don't knock it 'til you've tried it twice." So after an underwhelming experience at the Sausage Deli a few months ago, I stopped in for another try. Last time I had gotten the Bismarck sub, only to suddenly appreciate how important it is for pastrami, sauerkraut, and co. to be served on bread with some firmness to it. The Sausage Deli's microwaved white bread sub just didn't cut it, and made the entire sandwich feel floppy and sad (the flavor, I should add, was nothing to write home about either, though it wasn't bad). Today I decided to change directions and opt for the barbecue special, which is offered only on Tuesdays and Fridays. I figured that floppy, microwaved bread wouldn't be half as bad if it were filled with delicious barbecued beef, and I might have been right if the beef had been delicious. But alas, it was just so-so, and when combined with the lameness of the bread, I was left wondering why I insisted on coming back at all. So call me a hater, I guess, but I just don't see how this place could possibly deserve 4.5 stars. There's just nothing particularly good about it as far as I can tell, and the bread totally ruins all of their hot sandwiches (which I ascertain to be the point of this place). There's this thing that I call "The Omar Obsession". It's when you can't stop thinking about this perfect sub consisting of salami, turkey, green peppers, pepperchinis, onions, provolone, mustard, and Italian dressing. And everything is thinly sliced to perfection. You think about it, dream about it, can't get it out of your head until you have it in your hands kind of deal. This results in "The Week Long Omar Binge". Self explanatory. THE OMAR IS LEGENDARY. If you go when it's busy, the sub isn't as juicy. Go when it isn't busy, like after the lunch rush. Trust me, you will appreciate the extra juiciness of the Italian dressing. You might even lick the wrapper if no one's looking. It's that good. The sandwich version is good too, but not as amazing as the sub roll. I get this when I'm feeling like a wimp and can't finish the sub. The sub is deceiving - looks small but the ingredients are heavy. I like sour and I like a little crunch to my food, so I get the vinegar chips with the sub. Perfect combo. Inside seating is limited, but there are picnic benches outside. The owner is nice and gave us the 2 for 1 deal even though I had already used the coupon on 4 other subs. Thanks! But it's well deserved since I buy this for people I like and spread the Omar Obsession. By the way, this is THE BEST hangover food.... or so I'm told ;) read more

I was probably eight years old the first time I ate at Sausage Deli. 23 years later, it is still my go-to place for a sub style sandwich in Tucson. For my money there's not a cold sub better than their Italian Grinder. Sure, you can find something similar at other restaurants. But it's the little details that make this one shine. The pastrami and Genoa salami cuts are of the highest quality, the onions and bell peppers are sliced paper thin to add the requisite flavor without overcrowding the sub, and that drizzle of Italian dressing and little shake of oregano help tie it all together. But let's say it is one of those few days where the temperature fails to reach 70 degrees and you're in the mood for something hot. They've got that covered, too! You can't go wrong with the Omar, because there's something about the way the chopped pepperoncinis and yellow mustard pair with warm turkey breast, salami, and Swiss that is nothing short of magical. I am also fond of the Black Dog and Bismarck (WARNING: contains sauerkraut AND horseradish). To be honest, I haven't tried much else, but that's only because I've never had the want or need. The original Sausage Deli used to serve beer by the bottle only, but since they moved and expanded last year, they now offer beer on draft. They have a happy hour from 2:00pm - 6:00pm, where all subs are $6 and all pints of beer are $2.50 each. One small item of note is they're closed on Sundays. Also, they shutter their doors at 7:00pm on days they are open, so dinnertime meals are only an option if you eat earlier. If you're looking a simple, unpretentious, but delicious sandwich , I would definitely recommend Sausage Deli without any reservations. read more

Yes, it's the sort of place that recent Tucsonans mistake for a local institution, but its sandwiches occupy the boring interstices between Eegees and Subway. The new location is impressively sterile and characterless and the food continues the theme. The sub-bread is a cheap and gluey failure. If you're excited by mayonnaise, iceberg lettuce, and uninspired cold-cuts, you might find the ingredients worthy of praise but, if you actually like flavor, you'll want to keep searching. Hell, even their cookies are flint-hard and mediocre. For all that they are uninspired local chains, both Baggins or Beyond Bread crush any of the subs coming out of the Sausage Deli. Of course, if you actually enjoy this experience we call life, go to the Sausage Shop and get a self-respecting sandwich. read more
