What's with the name? We went to the Sausage Deli for some sausage and found out they only have one sausage sandwich and for some reason it's only served on Wednesday. Then why is it called the Sausage Deli? To make matters worse they nuke all their hot sandwiches in a microwave instead of cooking them on a griddle, which I don't think they even have, creating an uneven glimey mess. Look at some of the other comments where people wish their sandwich was toasted more. It wasn't toasted in the first place. And look at the photos of the hot sandwiches, instead of being crispy they are mushy. There's no excuse for nuking all the sandwiches. What a disappointing experience. read more

Definitely the best sub I've ever eaten, and that means a lot coming from me because I'm pretty picky. Like most reviewers, I got the Omar - effing delicious. Ended up using an online coupon (on my phone) and got a whole sub, macaroni salad, chips, and pop. I ate it all, but TOO MUCH FOOD!!! (And I'm a 6'1", 185 lb male with a BIG appetite.). My favorite spot in Tucson BY FAR!!!! It's going to be weird going into the new place and having places to sit and room to move (a nice kind of weird though). I wish and pray that that they will open one of these in Phoenix, I'd be there every week.. This has to be the best sandwich place.. Its a small shack of a restaurant with a decent patio, maybe five tables inside and is located behind a gas station on probably one of the busiest intersections in Tucson.. but its worth the frustration of traffic or not finding a seat.. Their Deli meat is cut fresh right at the restaurant, the bread is brought in fresh from a bakery, so basically everything is fresh at this place.. What I usually get is the Italian grinder so good, and I have to have one every time I go to Tucson.. Other good things are the make your own Deli Sandwiches they are willing to do any requests.. Like my mom gets the roast beef sandwich with potato salad on it, and they charge it just as an extra topping instead of an extra side order.. Their lunch deal is awesome, sandwich chips, a side and a drink. Their pickles are so good, I always ask for extra.. The sandwich guys are cute and helpful.. So disappointed - our 1st time there - wanted some sausage - guess what NO SAUSAGE - only one sausage sandwich available ONLY on Wednesdays what the? Ordered a simple ham and cheese on white bread for the kiddos - it came on what looked like sour dough RYE bread - the gal said that is their wheat bread?? Huh? The Omar is a hot sandwich that we watched them wrap tightly in paper and then microwave - the bread was so chewy! The meatball sub (flavorless meat and sauce) was handled the same way all squished tightly in paper taped and microwaved - $30 later and I could have made a nice sausage sandwich at home! Lol. The restaurant was clean and the only good thing was the pickle - offer a few different sausage sandwiches and offer them daily - buy a toaster oven and quit microwaving the food. I'm a big fan of the prosciutto and swiss. It was delicious. The interior is not that bad. . .sort of a deli case as order counter. They made my sandwich quick. You have to really pay attention to the different little gems like the small salads. Artichoke salad was definitely good and definitely different. Meat portion was generous and you could have it anyway you want. Just tell them what you want, and they'll figure away to get it done. Having worked there i can tell you everything is cut fresh that morning, and all the meats are sliced daily! Bread comes in every morning, there is nothing that isnt totally fresh and delicious there. The roast beef is by far the best. its actually roasted on site, they put the meat in the oven in the morning. its cooked rare so its still delicious when it goes onto your sandwich. Sausage Deli is everything you want it to be. Simple, tasty, traditional, and fun. I took my husband here (it was his first time) in search of a sandwich shop that we can both love - We found it! I've had many of the sandwiches, but I dream of the Omar. My husband had a Reuben and he loved it as well. The pickles - Awesome! And they serve beer. Good price for the quality, too. It's crowded if you try to sit inside but the patio usually has seating. The service is good. I love that you can see your much-loved sandwich being made as you wait. I've been coming here for years, and it's still the best lunch spot in the University area. I wish it were open later and on Sundays, but I can't even mark it down for that. I've tried a lot of things on the menu, but I always come back to the Italian Grinder and the Omar. The Grinder is a little unorthodox in using pastrami, and it has a lot of stuff on it, but it's one of the better cold sandwiches in Tucson. I'll never know how the came up with the idea for the Omar, but it is my favorite sandwich EVER. One of those things where once you finish eating, you immediately want another one. Throw in some artichoke salad, chips, and a soda/beer, and you're in for a fantastic lunch. I should also note this is the only deli where I have been satisfied with a veggie sandwich, both in terms of taste and how filling it is. Truly a Tucson institution. read more

I love the Sausage Deli, true there is no sausage here which is kinda weird. The Omar is my go-to favorite sandwich here, minus green peppers. But I have never ordered a sandwich I didn't like. Service is always friendly, if a bit slow but that's because they're always busy. Even when I call in an order there is still a wait. Beers are great and pretty cheap however we've dined in and sat at the bar and were never offered a refill. Yeah you order at the counter but that makes the bar awkward. The Sausage Deli is serving up some solid food, but nothing amazing. Nothing I crave or have to rush back for. But it's a great lunch option that beats out most of the chain sandwich shops all over the place, though. The cold cuts and sandwich options have always been fresh. The bread isn't the best, but it's ok. They're a bit skimpy on everything but lettuce and pickles, which I find odd because the prices are a bit on the higher end. Especially cheese. I can't taste the cheese in any sandwich I order, because hardly any gets put on the sandwich. That said, the sandwiches still taste fine. If they put more than one or two slices of everything on the bread, then the prices would be right on. All in all, the sandwiches taste fine but the proportions are off (especially the lettuce, I feel like my sandwiches were absolutely loaded with lettuce). They would be pretty damn good sandwiches with proper proportions of food. I haven't liked any of their side dishes besides the bagged potato chips. The fries are just the frozen kind, though they fry them and salt them nicely. The potato salad was bland and meh. I would order the fries again but not the potato salad. The restaurant has been pretty clean, including the food prep areas that are visible. There's plenty of seating available. The staff is ok, not really friendly but not rude or mean. Freshly made to order, crisp and well seasoned. Very excited to see where they take these bad boys. So if you're still reading this, you might be a sandwich lover too. So what's the big deal beyond the food? How about the fact that this has been family owned, and has had this level of quality since my father first came here in the 70s/80s. The owner, Chris, and his staff take incredible passion in their work - it's visible in the cleanliness, you can taste it in the food, and feel it in the atmosphere. I've never been so wowed every time I come into a restaurant as I am here. This was the first place I came after a year of being away from Tucson, and it'll always be a place of great memories. We've been eating at Sausage Deli since we were in college. Now that they are in their new place, it's an ever nicer visit. We are big fans of "The Omar" and "the Susie Sorority." "The Omar" is loaded with salami, onion, and bell pepper while "the Susie Sorority" is a turkey loaded with sprouts and lettuce and is great on a hot day. Try substituting avocado for the mayo. I love this place. While i was attending school at UA, i would come here and only get the Italian Grinder or the Hoagie (a smaller version of the Grinder). I love their potato salad as well, simply the best i ever had. Not a single place i have tried in Los Angeles, who can compete with their potato salad. Prosciutto & Swiss. I've been to this delectable little deli quite a few times and have always gotten this phenomenal sandwich (on a sub roll). The only time I digressed from this option was when they ran out of prosciutto and my life was ruined. I called in daily to check on their meat status and returned triumphantly a few days later when they got a fresh shipment of the precious dry-cured ham.
