Flavorful rice with tender and nicely season sliced chicken breast topped with a dollop of guacamole. Also had the Chicken Pozole, which was quite flavourful, but was over 90% broth with a minimal amount of Chicken and hominy. When we first saw on the menu that Guacamole was nearly $13, we were skeptical. The reaction was: "13 bucks for guac and some chips?" "Whaat?" But we take back all those negative thoughts. Not only was the guac delicious, the serving size was generous and worthy of the hefty price tag. And the chips ... were cleverly served as entire tortillas that were fried and brought to the table in a basket so that you could break then into pieces and dip the guacamole. The visual presentation was neat and it was fun to eat it that way. Especially since we had also ordered the Queso Fundido, which was awesome. We used the same chips to dip into the queso. The shrimp fajitas were good, served with a tasty rice that was head and shoulders above the Spanish rice you might typically get at a Mexican food restaurant. We also tried three types of tacos and the best was the crispy fish. The carnitas were a bit on the dry side. This was a good spot for dinner. I'm giving this 4 stars because we loved the ambiance and our family who was visiting from Seattle enjoyed their food. I had the Taco plate - 3 tacos for $19.50! I had the crispy fish, pork al pastor and beef barbacoa. This is 3 out of 5 for me. Price is a little too much for 3 tacos. It was okay. I didn't finish it. My husband had the pork chili Verde with sweet corn. He said it was good but will not order it again. It had a very strong cilantro taste to it. 3 out of 5. Sister in law had mixed green salad and caramelized onion empanadas. It was good. 4 out of 5. Her husband had the lamb barbacoa enchiladas. He loved it and couldn't stop raving about it. It had the right amount of heat. 5 out of 5. Niece had kids' grilled chicken. It came with French fries. She finished the chicken but not fries. 3.5 out of 5. I have been coming here for 6 ish years thanks to a friend from LA that introduced me while I was home visiting. I fell in love with the Chili Verde but have honestly never had a bad meal here. I make this a mandatory stop every time I am in LA for work and that is 4-6 times a year. The service is great. They must have a secret formula for hiring great folks. Never had a bad server here. The food is elevated and made from quality ingredients. Their Margarita special at Happy Hour is the best on the West Coast. Have been here a 3-4 times over the last several years and my experience has been very consistent each time. My review is based on those collective experiences: -food- think modern latin fusion skewing somewhat upscale. Nice takes on most everything. Overall the place would feel a little more upscale as it seems they're earnestly trying to achieve if the menu had a little more creativity and inventiveness. Don't get me wrong, there are some excellent dishes. Chicken enchilada w/ cashew mole & crispy shrimp diablo come to mind. Their Arroz con Pollo is something special. Cocktails are pretty solid as well; I've had a number of them and never been disappointed. -service- Consistently good without being anything special or stand-out. Always friendly, reasonably attentive. Hosts/hostesses are always quick and have a warm, welcoming demeanor. -ambiance- Darker interior is a nice vibe for dates, or a place with character for entertaining clients. outdoor patio during COVID was okay but would have liked to see more investment in the look & feel of that space. Hard to ding restos too much for that in these times. But feels like they could have gone the extra 5% to really impress people and make it genuinely memorable. LOVE Sausal! They always have tasty margaritas and I love their fried tortillas and salsa. I like being able to crack the tortilla and make my own chips-they seem to last longer that way. ;) I think we have tried nearly every item on the menu. Great restaurant with fresh-tasting dishes in a vibrant, fun atmosphere! On a family vacation in mid-August, my wife, two sons (12 yrs., 10 yrs.), and I came for Friday dinner at 5:30pm. It was nice to see a mix of friends, families with children, and co-workers enjoying Happy Hour (3pm-6pm). Parking was easier to find one block away (behind the building). The agua fresca (with orange, pineapple, and chia seeds) was refreshing as well as the lemonade. We ordered the empanadas and devoured the crushed green tomatillos, which greatly enhanced the dish. For our main dishes, we tried the pork chile verde, arroz con pollo, grilled salmon, and hangar steak. The arroz con pollo was the outstanding star on the table with its wood-smoked chicken and flavorful rice. The least enjoyable dish was the hangar steak, which was a bit tough. The grilled salmon was light and pleasant, but not as flavorful as the arroz con pollo. The pork chile verde was delightful as well, but was 2nd place among our dishes. However, the best part of the entire meal was dessert! My son devoured the Spanish date cake. My wife and I shared the Oaxaca flan cake, which was a subtle combination of flan and cheesecake. If you're visiting SAUSAL for the first time, I would strongly recommend the arroz con pollo and the Spanish date cake. read more

On a recent business trip to LA, I stayed at my usual hotel in El Segundo. I decided one night to find somewhere to eat near my hotel and the first restaurant I found was Sausal. After reading the reviews, I was sold and made my way to the restaurant. That was when the magic happened. I ordered the duck enchiladas with mole sauce. It was the best mole sauce I've ever had. As I sliced through the enchilada, releasing the juicy tender duck meat, I scooped some rice and mole sauce in my fork along with the enchilada piece and placed it in my mouth. The flavor profile was like fireworks on my tongue. A bit of heat from the spice, a bit of sweet from the mole sauce, a bit of savory from the succulent duck meat. The symphony of flavors paired with the rainbow of textures. Crispy enchilada tortilla mixed with creamy mole sauce on top of soft grainy rice. It's one of the most enlightening bites of food I've ever had in my life. Even though the portion was properly sized and I was full after eating, I wanted to eat that dish for the rest of the night. It was so tasty, I considered going back the next day. I've had my fair share of Mexican food all over the country including in California and LA, but nothing I've ever tried can compare to the duck enchilada I had at Sausal. My friend suggested we come to Sausal for lunch. She's been a few times and highly recommended the place. Sausal is located in the quaint town of El Segundo, just south of the airport. The ambiance is inviting and trendy with a nice bar and out door patio for al fresco dining. I was debating between the lunch special which was a cup of chicken pesole soup and a choice of taco or the short rib empanda. Our server suggested the later so I went with the empanada. My friend went with the crispy shrimp salad. We decided to get the Caramelized Brussel sprouts for an appetizer. The Brussel sprouts had a bright citrusy flavor from the hint of lime and also had a slight heat from red chili butter and a crunch from the sourdough croutons. Liked it. The short rib empanadas came with 3. They were on the smaller side not filled with a lot of short rib meat. But they were very filling. My friend ordered the grilled shrimp salad. I had a bite of her''s and liked it better than my dish. We dined on the outdoor patio. Service was friendly. I'll come back and try something else other than the empanadas. read more

I have to write my review while it's fresh in my mind. I always come down here to eat at neighboring restaurants but finally got a chance to try them out. We were greeted and sat quickly. I arrived after my friends to find a tequila bottle on the table. Wow! I was in love! But it was only water.... Womp, Womp. I had reviewed their menu online before arriving and decided on ordering the Angry Mussels. That shit was hot! I drank 5 cups of water trying to eat it. Like I told a friend, I like fire, but this was set to HELL! It was definitely too spicy to be enjoyable. It shouldn't be called Angry Mussels, it should be renamed, Fuck That Bitch! I felt like I had wronged someone in a former life. Yes, it had a good flavor, but so spicy. I'm shocked I didn't wipe my eyebrows off from all the sweating I did. Maybe it was just my bowl, but I didn't see any chorizo. If there was some in there, they were itsy bitsy pieces. There's about 10-11 pieces of mussel in the stew along with hominy and fresh thyme. The mussels themselves were very clean. After eating my meal I definitely welcomed the refreshingly cool Rancho Caesar Salad it came with. It had a creamy Caesar dressing with freshly made sourdough croutons, shaved parmesan cheese, and pepitas (pumpkin seeds). The sourdough bread that accompanied the meal was delicious. It was toasted on the grill with butter and had a delightful smoky flavoring from the wood. My amigos had the Arroz con Pollo and the Chile Verde with corn. The Arroz con Pollo is made over a wooden fire and must've been really good since my friend hardly said a word during our meal. We think he just inhaled his food. My other friend's Chile Verde looked okay. It was a smaller portion than I was expecting. He ordered the pozole on the side which smelled great. The décor is very minimal with large decorative pieces throughout. The more hearty lunches run about $15 a plate. They have tacos, salads, and soup. Really something for everyone. Non-Alcoholic drinks are about $4 and up. They have an extensive bar menu. I would like to venture out again to try out their selection. I can see returning to try other menu items out, but know better than to eat those Angry Mussels again. read more
