I've had Savona on my radar for a while. I went last month and it was everything I expected. Great Service, it felt like our waitress checked on us every 20 minutes, which personally I loved because it gave me and my man a chance to chat and have alone time. The food was delicious! 10 June 2023 We went here for a special occasion on Thursday. It was an absolutely mediocre and expensive endeavor. A bill of over $250 dollars (including two glasses of wine) for incredibly mediocre to inedible food. The positives: tasty bean soup ($15.00), oysters (half a dozen - $22.00), and calamari fritti ($18.00). The negative far outweigh the positives. Veal and ricotta meatballs ($15.00): a terrible combination of overly salted and bland. Caesar salad ($13.00): overly dressed and prepared like a chopped salad. It was mush. Pepperoni pizza ($20.00): Undercooked crust and overuse and overpowering oregano. Insipid tomato sauce. Savona Bolognese ($25.00): Bland and tasted reheated. My dinner companion got sick afterward. The worst thing that happened is that when we complained about the quality of the second pasta dish (Mafaldine - $27.00) that was absolutely inedible, the waiter, simply apologized. He did not offer a substitute. He did not inquire about what, exactly, was wrong with it. He did not offer to take it off the bill. Worst customer service ever. We'll never ever go back. My husband and I dined here for dinner last night (Saturday), with 5:45pm reservations. I have driven by this restaurant a hundred times and have always been curious! There are a handful of parking spots out front but most of the lot is valet only. Inside it is somewhat dimly lit and casually elegant. The kitchen is visible, which is fun if you don't mind being able to both see and hear the energy of everyone cooking (we didn't mind). The hostess greeted us warmly and immediately showed us to our table upstairs. We were well tended to throughout the evening by our server and half a dozen other staff who kept our places cleared and water glasses filled. We were the first ones in the dining room when we arrived, but both it and the entire downstairs filled up very quickly, and it got quite loud; and both floors stayed packed solid all night. (The earlier you can arrive, the better!) Starters: Bread with olive oil Polpettini - Moist, flavorful Golden Fried Artichokes - Crispy, NOT breaded; citrus aioli was delightful Pear Sorbet with prosciutto was provided to cleanse our palate, but it came out after our bread and before the appetizers. It seems like it would make more sense between apps and main course, but it was pleasant nonetheless. Entrees: Garganelli - Good, but perhaps better with a different pasta shape Chitarra - A little too much tomato in proportion to pasta, but still delicious. Nice kick! Freshly-grated Parmesan might have nicely complemented both of our dishes, but it was not offered. Dessert: Ricotta Cheesecake - Light, not too sweet "Thin Mint" Brownie - Pass. Not bad, but it did nothing for me. Just kinda meh. Bourbon Cream Coffee - Fun! Yum! The timing of our dishes was just right, and quite prompt. Everything was the perfect portion and temperature. We left feeling satisfied -- a little full but not uncomfortable. I noticed a couple of people (including my hubby) struggling with their chairs, which are heavy and don't maneuver easily on the carpet. Not a big deal, but worth noting. Also, there's a handicapped restroom on the main level, but the main restrooms are down beneath that (i.e. 2 flights down from dining room -- no restroom upstairs). Dined here on Saturday 9/26. Only option was outdoor dining we made a reservation through opentable 2 days prior. Under a well light tent we're a variety of tables and chairs. We Not impressed but will give it another try possibly in the future. I didn't get sophisticated dining from our experience. Service was spotty and they were actually out of the entree I ordered. They offered to "create a seafood pasta" for me as they were out of mussels. I told they that I would like a variety of whatever seafood they had available, what I received was basically a shrimp pasta in a red sauce... nothing special. I would give this another whirl possibly if I was able to get an indoor dining option during the week. I can not say I would recommend it. I was very distracted by the forces use of valet and people taking pictures next to high price cars while I was trying to enjoy my meal with my companion. If you are in the burbs, outside of the city, this place is worth checking out. I wouldn't say it is a travel destination if you are coming from the city - plenty of options that meet or exceed expectations. This place was good though, don't get me wrong. Really high-end feel. Nice bar inside - bartenders are very knowledgeable and helpful in creating drinks that you want. It is an expensive menu, but they have lots to choose from. They cover the gambit (pizza - seafood - pasta - meat entrees - you name it.) read more

Been wanting to try Savona after driving by for years and finally did a couple weeks ago. They seem to be doing a great job with social distancing. They have a huge outdoor tent. We sat inside but were practically in a room by ourselves. Parking is valet which was easy. I was disappointed we weren't given fresh bread since this is an Italian restaurant. Not sure if they forgot about us or they just don't do that here. My husband ordered a cocktail to start which was very good. We ended up sharing a Caesar salad which was also very good. For our entrees, we got a margherita pizza and the filet mignon. I wasn't a fan of the pizza. The ingredients tasted fresh, but the crust literally had the consistency of a cracker. The filet was delicious. Tasted as good as a filet you'd order from a steakhouse. We finished with dessert, both delicious. We had the flourless chocolate brownie and the chocolate bread pudding. Highly recommend getting dessert here. Service was ok. It started off great, but not long after us a large party came in and we didn't see our waiter much after that. Drinks sat unrefilled. Overall we enjoyed our meal. But, I'm not in a rush to come back, for the money there are just other local places I like more. read more

My wife and I were there Friday (4/26/24)evening with another couple. The noise was so overwhelming conversation was nearly impossible. The oysters on the half shell, touted as large and succulent were small and ordinary, the Fra Diavolo with shrimp special was over spiced and the pasta tough and chewy. The lavender creme brûlée was excellent. The other three thought the food ok but the noise unacceptable. Our waiter was going through the motions. All of our dishes at Savona had an emphasis on presentation. Their staff has an eye for detail. For starters, the complimentary l'amuse bouche (see photos) was a dumpling filled with seafood - it was a promising start to the meal. Our appetizers were also promising. The foie gras was a treat, and a little tougher than I'm used to. (Tough isn't a word I often associate with foie gras, but whatever.) The bouillabaisse was herby and delicious. Our entrees were well-prepared but didn't taste as good as they looked. The Berkshire pork and the halibut were both fine but lacking "oompf" (plain flavor). The pork had great pickles on the side and the halibut had earl grey tea (never seen this before) poured into the bowl as it was delivered to us. Don't get me wrong; their menu is creative and I recommend their tasting menu for the adventurous. Complimentary profiteroles helped close the meal. For dessert, we also ordered the sweet tropical cobbler (vanilla gelato, cinnamon crust, spiced tropical fruit). Service (Adrian, Huey, and others) was wonderful (as-expected for a restaurant of its caliber). The staff paid attention to us and even gave us a tour after the meal (appreciated)! I've been meaning to try out Savona for quite some time. I'm not sure when I would go back (not anytime soon due to the high prices), but I would recommend anyone try it for a special occasion... Savona is an interesting place, full of things that I wouldn't think would mix, but do mix wonderfully. The building housed Aaron Burr during the Revolutionary War, and there are still gorgeous reminders of the building's history, which are particularly evident in the bottom floor where the wine cellar is, with beautiful stone walls and beam ceilings. The restaurant is classy but not stuffy, historical but with modern touches, like a full window into the kitchen (very cool!) From the moment we walked in, my boyfriend and I were greeted by friendly attentiveness, and that continued through the evening. Every person, from our waiter Casey on, was skillful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The cheeses and spiedini were scrumptious - perfectly grilled swordfish and shrimp, and delicious cheeses with grapes, walnuts, and honey. (how did we not know how fantastic fontina and black pepper rustico cheese with honey tastes?!) Neither my boyfriend nor I had ever had halibut, so we asked Casey what it was like, and ordered it based on his description. Boy was he spot on, it was exactly as he described, and delicious, perfectly grilled. For dessert we had the blueberry bread pudding, and like everything else, it was a taste sensation but not too heavy, so ultimately we felt full but not badly stuffed. Side note - when I'd made reservations through Open Table, I goofily checked the box that the occasion was an anniversary. I don't normally call attention to that kind of thing, and I promptly forgot about it. But when we arrived, the hostess wished us a happy anniversary right away, and the at the end of the meal, the blueberry bread pudding plate had "happy anniversary" written in chocolate. Savona - KOP - Elegant and Splurge-worthy! It's hard to feel like you are fine-dining in a tent but with details like outside carpeting, foliage and thoughtful lighting it feels like an upscale event to eat outside here. I had a lovely Riesling which paired perfectly with my food. Hubby got the "All for You" which is like drinking a warm apple pie.... really spectacular! The charred octopus was the best I have ever had.... I've ordered octopus a few times over the last year since I am guessing this is a tricky dish to make and was disappointed with the rubberiness of it at other places but it had the perfect tender texture at Savona. The smoked chicken meatballs were good but a bit odd with the horseradish sauce but our shrunken human loved them. The branzino with stewed tomatoes, fennel and olives was very tasty! The short rib pasta with wild mushrooms was delicious as well. For dessert, we got the coconut almond cake with passion fruit mousse and mango guava gelee which tastes as amazing as it looks..... and I love how they added a few miniature macarons in there as well. Came in on a Friday night for dinner with the wife sans kids. We've lived in the area our whole lives and passed this place all the time. We heard good things, liked the menu so decided to give it a try. We had an ok at best experience. Service was rushed and food was just ok. They did accommodate my wife's gluten free pasta request with no issue. However, they started mopping the kitchen and vacuuming the floors in the dinning room while people were still at their tables enjoying dinner and dessert. That's really rude and a big pet peeve of ours. For the price, buzz and atmosphere, we expected better. We won't go out of our way to visit again. Overall a good experience. I was there for a work function with a fixed menu. The service was excellent and the food was just above average. In fairness, it was likely prepped earlier that evening. I had the pasta. The sauce was good, but the penne tasted as if it was cooked Al dente earlier and dropped in boiling water for a few minutes prior to serving. We live nearby, and made reservations for my wife's birthday this past Monday. The hostess acknowledged my wife's birthday when we sat - but that was it during our time here, nothing more. We weren't expecting a birthday three-ring circus, but in reading other's experiences (for birthdays, anniversaries) thought she was in store for something special. Upon leaving, the chef did say Happy Birthday. So, perhaps it was just our waiter who was uninformed or ignored it. It was a letdown. When we left, we had to retrieve our own umbrella from the closet (think the hostess was done for the night). Ambiance - spot on Food quality - we had the Filet and Sirloin, as well as the Oysters - all very good. Filet was good, albeit overpriced (price is comparable to Morton's). Drinks - we had 2 drinks and 2 wines. Good, overpriced, but good. We get it, and expect to pay a little more for a fine evening. Thought the price points (on those 2 items) weren't on par for this level of restaurant, considering the competition. That's not a deal-breaker for us, we had fun, but left feeling 'Meh' hence the 2 stars. We've experienced better considering the occasion and expense. read more

I hosted my family's Mother's Day dinner at Savona's for a party of 12. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. We were seated in their wine cellar, this was a great bonus since we had two small children in our party and they could move around between courses. Savona had a prefix menu and the selections were good and portion sizes was ample. I had the braised short rib and my wife had the scallops as mains. The salads and desserts were delicious as well. My one suggestion would be to maintain the full Children's Menu for holidays like Mother's and Father's Day. From the hostess to the servers everyone I encountered was engaged with serving the customers and they all had great attitudes and enjoyed their jobs. The ambience is really nice, have a fancy feel. However, the other aspects didn't keep up. Our waiter was good, pretty knowledgeable and attentive. We ordered a bottle of white wine and they just left it on the table, not chilled or anything so by the end of the meal it was pretty warm. My boyfriend got a ravioli special that was half cheese ravs, half polenta and chorizo. It was supposed to be in a white wine sauce but was actually in like a brown beef style gravy, I wasn't a fan. I got the short rib mushroom pasta. The homemade pasta was good but the sauce was lacking flavor. It tasted like a beef stroganoff not a parm cream sauce. The Rosemary focaccia bread was probably the best part of our meal. Overall it was a cool place but the food was lacking especially for the price. My family recently had dinner at Savona last Thursday evening. The drive up to the restaurant was lovely, the restaurant and tent illuminated beautifully. The valet parkers were professional and efficient, yet charming. Hostess was as well. Now, mind you, I did not do my "homework" on the restaurant as I was visiting from out of town and told my college son to choose whichever restaurant he wanted to go to. He chose Savona. Appetizers: I chose the fried artichokes. In no way were they freshly fried/prepared. They came to the table almost immediately after we had ordered and they were hard and almost cold and definitely not crisp, like what a freshly fried item would be. Their texture and taste was like what I imagine cardboard would taste like. I left 3/4 of the portion on the plate and when the server removed my plate he (Brandon) did not query if I enjoyed them or not. I understand that some restaurants pre-plate the appetizers for time management but fried items should not be one of them. My son had the veal meatballs and enjoyed them. Dinner was enjoyable, scallops, bolognese, pizza. The pizza was, by far, the favorite dish tried at the table. My main complaint is the server, Brandon. His definitely needs better training, especially if he is serving at a "high end" restaurant such as Savona with the pricing that you command. Water was never refreshed, we helped ourselves after the initial pour of the flat and sparkling. When clearing the plates he stacked the plates on the table (big no-no) then reached across ME to get my daughter's plate (seated to my right) all while holding several place settings that dripped tomato juices (from son's meal) onto the table cloth in front of me. So relieved mess did not get on my clothes. If you work in a fine dining restaurant, it's likely that you'll be guided in your initial restaurant server training on the best serving etiquette for that particular venue. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to serve from the left: that is, changing cutlery, laying down food, and serving drinks.Plates are cleared from the table on the right side of the guests. I learned that before but it took a successful Mother's Day brunch to rekindle that memory. Tucked away in an unsuspecting corner of Gulph Mills Road, Savona is an intriguing restaurant in an older building with an updated a modernized decor, especially were it counts in the dining room. the bar featured an amicable selection of brews from the likes of Dogfish Head, Yards, and Ommegang; as well a a satisfactory cocktail list. But in the tradition of brunch I opted for a Grey Goose Bloody Mary which yielded a subtle spicy kick. Whether it was a cream of goat cheese in a crimini mushroom soup, pecorino romano in a risotto with bacon, or a parmesean reggiano melt in a Tuscan white bean soup; I was really in awe of the ways that cheese was utilized in the menu. And they succeeded in the rare task of opening a monger like me up to some previously unheard of varieties like Creme Royale and a smooth but slightly salty triple creme goat cheese that I really wish I could remember the name of. Overall the farm to table food menu was very thought out and featured some well played twists. The aforementioned mushroom soup might have been the best that I've ever had. And my eggs Benedict with asparagus and a smoked Scottish salmon was one of those rare egg dishes that had me wanting to lick the yolk off my plate. and my mom and dad were satisfied with their blue claw crab scrambled eggs. I had always heard great things about Savona but had never been. So this was a reservation I was really looking forward to. They have done an excellent job with their outdoor seating arrangements for the pandemic. They were able to accommodate a party of 6 and make a 20° night feel comfortable with the heated tent. The makeshift dining room is the only thing that earned them an additional star. Starters: I started with the butternut squash and lobster soup. The soup was nice and creamy and came out piping hot, perfect to warm you up on this chilly night. However, it was way too sweet and for a $15 cup of "lobster" soup I'd expect more than the 4 small scraps of lobster that looked like they'd been picked out of leftover shells and chucked on top as an afterthought. My girlfriend had the chicken meatballs which can only be described as unremarkable. Entrees: I had the Rohan duck breast with brussel sprouts, French green lentils, parsnip puree, and cherry jus. The plate looked delicious upon arriving to the table, including the perfectly executed medium rare temperature. If only it had tasted even a fraction as good as it presented. The duck was so bland I feared I was starting to exhibit COVID symptoms. Although they were nothing to write home about, atleast the parsnip and sprouts reassured me I hadnt lost my sense of taste this evening. For my girlfriend, the Maine lobster and saffron risotto. Let's start with presentation. What arrived to the table was a luminous yellow coloured risotto, which from across the table resembled a can of sweet corn that had been dumped onto a plate. On top of that, some carelessly thrown on lobster and fistfuls of parsley (or as they like to call it "fine herbes"). What a mess Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, we decided to try it. Saffron is supposed to be fragrant and have a slightly sweet, earthy, and floral taste to it. But the risotto tasted like plastic (a commonly noted issue for imitation saffron or saffron that has not been stored properly). The only noteworthy thing I ate tonight was a friend's scallop. If everything was seasoned and tasted as good as that single scallop this would be a 5 star review. We declined dessert. Although the menu offered some tantalizing options, we assumed it was more of the same - over sell on the description and under deliver on execution. Part of the appeal of dining here is in the divine food presentation. Every dish has looked fit for at least a Viceroy, if not King. The food itself is quite good. The salmon tartare is very fresh and paired well with a hint of lemon. They were served with these delicious hand-cut fingerling "chips." The foie gras was nice but not the best that I have had. The veal sweetbreads were cooked to the perfect degree of crispiness and very nicely seasoned. The entrees were lovely and some were excellent. The sauteed sole was cooked to perfection in a delicious lemon butter sauce and topped off with pine nuts. It almost looked too pretty to eat. Almost. Nothing can stop me from consuming a plate of good food once it is set in front of me. I also tried the roast rack of lamb, which was very flavorfully seasoned (rosemary, if I recall) and tender, it was served with peas and carrots. The Napolean with banana bread, nutella mouse, and gelato was the perfect finish, although the honey marscarpone crepe does come in a close second. The wine selection is excellent, in particular the Gosset Grande Rose. Love the vintage collection. Service is on par with Le-Bec Fin so it is superb. Definitely one of the nicest restaurants in close proximity to the Main Line. Yes, it is slightly pricey but the ambiance is almost unsurpassed. read more

Cold bread not optimal way to start a meal. Olive oil on a plate isn't great for dipping. Herbs & some seasonings would help. Drinks and appetizers were well done. Chicken breast a bit dry. Broccoli Rabe should have been pre boiled in salt water to minimize bitterness. More intense lemon caper sauce would have helped the dish tremendously. Great service from wait staff and valet. It is a lovely place with great service but the food was just ok. We had much better food elsewhere. They have a huge tent set for outdoor dining. We sat inside and felt very safe. They did a great job distancing the tables. Again lovely place but so so food. Also be warned the parking is very tight due to the tent. read more

Terrible. Crowded. No noise filtering and an obnoxiously loud table next to us. Almost 45 minutes to get our meat and cheese tray! Which the waiter said they were holding because my daughter ordered a salad!? I don't think we would have gotten it if we didn't ask. All in all our meals were good 2 hours for dinner on a Wednesday night a bit too long for me. Won't be back. read more
