Came in with a friend for a light supper. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant at table. We both found the place a very dark setting. We were trying to read the menus provided but could not see the writing with using the flashlight off our cell phones! This is kind of ridiculous to have the lighting so low. The food tonight was just sub par !! Don't bother with the steak bites for $20 you get 6 piece (4 oz ) very tough and chewy steak kind of reminded me of stew meat . So not worth the money . I went there after work with my girlfriend to get in a quick dinner. It wasn't busy at all. We sat there for 10 mins before we even got drinks. Then some guy walks in and seats down and had his food ready before we even got to order anything. The server said there was a rush when there was no one there. We finally ordered after a half hour and then had to wait 30 to 40 mins before we finally got to eat and they screwed our meal up.To make it worse our food was even cold. The bartender just sits behind the bar and doesn't help the server at all. I barley write reviews. But this is the worst place I have ever been too. And I've been there before with my baseball team and had the same service and I thought I'd give it another try. Never going back there again. I can promise you that. When I'm spending $160 I expect better service. read more

Getting the big greasy burger that would over take your mouth with flavor is so amazing. The way they make the food here is just an easy 5 star. The people are so kind, they go straight to you once you sit down and your meal will be served quiet quick. The interior of the place is just magnificent. Ceasar salad was very weak. Not enough of the ceasar dressing, too few croutons & garlic toast was very soft, mushy and not enough. My top sirlion steak was cooked to a perfect medium (as ordered) but it was very dense and difficult to chew(?) Lobster was perfectly cooked but very small. Had I known this I would have ordered two tails. Over- all not too bad but I have been going to the Sawmill for over 35 years and this was my worst experience by far. Disappointed but these days I am getting used to getting less for more $. Service was very good and the food was served hot so the night was not a complete loss. Best Moscow Mules I've ever had!! The beet salad is unique and very good. However, steak sandwich had a great presentation and taste, but steak was tough to chew and very hard to cut, Beef dip gravy was tasteless & beef was dry and mealy - surprise for a restaurant supposedly known for its beef. Wings were awful. Had the maple /bacon flavor(never again - bad taste for wings) but could not taste a lot of the maple bacon for the extreme saltiness!! Meat was extremely dry. Outside was hard and crunchy. Commented to server who went into a long explanation of why they were not juicy but dry, because they didn't have additives, hormones & antibiotics in them like all of the other restaurants do. They are dry because of that and they strive for quality. She completely missed that I wasn't happy with them and that I only ate half of the order. No saying "sorry" or offer to reduce the bill etc. Whatever happened to the "old" Sawmill when all food was satisfactory and the staff cared what you thought? Food is pricey and quality is lacking - nice surroundings but that's all. probably will not go back unless I have to for some good reason. read more

What a udder disappointment. We were seated for at least 15 minutes before my husband called a server over. Another at least 20 minutes before the drinks came. Ordered our meal and again we waited. Steaks came out over cooked. Sent one back. Manager finally came over. The manager said our meals were complementary after all the trouble. Complete gong show. The meals were not great. We explained up front that 3 of us are celiacs. Servers need to learn about their menu and what constitutes gluten free versus gluten friendly and if the deep fryers are same! Staff needs to be trained better, by management and that can be improved as well. We will not be back to this establishment! read more

We have had positive experiences in the past, however on our latest visit everything was below par. Nothing was hot, the French onion soup didn't even melt the cheese. Our wings were cold to the touch. Obviously they were cooked ahead of time, reheated and just throw the sauce on. The real disappointment was when we mentioned how our food didn't meet our expectations based on previous visits, they didn't care. No apologies, no how can we make it better. I was contemplating of giving this steakhouse a 1 star but our server was honest enough to agree with us that the damn pound cake was so dry it looked and tasted like a cardboard foam! It was my wife's birthday yesterday and she was so excited to finally eat her fav filet mignon,I'm more of a rib eye kind of girl. Anyways,it was our second time in that restaurant and to be fair our first experience was good.So we decided to go back! We were actually surprise to see that it wasn't busy @ 6 pm,probably 4 couples were dining in. We ordered the same thing. Bacon wrapped scallops for appetizer and filet mignon and ribeye steak for our main course. The guy for the kitchen servedu 2 overbaked bread for starters,I really thought they served us more bread last time. But hey! Maybe i was wrong. Here comes the appetizers! It was good but not great. The bread was so hard,it looked like the toasted it yesterday. After our appetizer, I swear,I thought they already forgot about us. It took them atleast 25-30 minutes to serve our main course which literally looked so mediocre!I always get baked potatoes with my steak and they served me mashed potatoes! At this point I was already so hungry that I couldn't be bothered. The steak was dry,and the crown seafood on top of the steak didn't help and made it looked and tasted like babyfood! I mean if I'm going to pay a $150 dollar meal I want to make sure that I get at least a decent food! but boy! It was so disappointing! And yeah the chefs complimentary pound cake? Well...never mind! Normally I love the Sawmill, but this location continuously fails to meet my expectations. I've been three times since they opened, and at different times of the day, and find the service sub par every time. It's slow, the waitresses seem miserable and are a bit snarly or you have to wonder if they are deaf because your order gets so badly screwed up (and I didn't think it was possible to screw up an order of wings). The first time we went was shortly after they opened. The restaurant and lounge were packed, which is to be expected. Also to be expected was that the waitresses were slammed and service wasn't great. So, I chalked it up to opening-week jitters, no biggy. I got the prime rib, which was good, but the au jus was different then I've come to expect. It was very, very rosemary-ey (and I like rosemary), and that sort of ruined the dish. The second time we went I ordered the salad and shared a plate of nachos. The food was okay; the salad was really good actually, but the waitress was miserable! It was the same waitress we'd had on the first visit, but this time the lounge was darn-near empty, and there was no excuse for the surliness. The third (and last) time we went, I wanted to know if it was possible to get a pound of wings, half in hot and half in BBQ. No problem, the waitress told me. Except what I got was a pound of hot and a pound of BBQ. The waitress wasn't overly apologetic when my dining partners pointed out the mistake, but she did take the second pound of wings off the bill. Too bad she was so confused about it, even when we were explaining the mistake Overall, I have no intention of visiting this Sawmill location again anytime soon. read more

Alberta's finest I suppose....or at least in Northern Alberta. Tom Goodchild has a pretty good franchise going and this seemed to be a major tosspot for the Tuesday night I cam here. I have to agree with the previous reviewer that the service was a but slow, and even though we made reservations, we still had to wait nearly 45 minutes and I am pretty sure they forgot about us as we as others who came later with no reservations get seated before us - and we had to ask the, even after we could clearly see there was room and the hostess and who appeared to be the manager were just chatting at the front. A bit of a downer way to start the evening when you're shelling out upwards of $70 a person. The food is good - standard fare for a steakhouse - decent selection for your cut, cooked pretty close to your liking, many sides, etc. We had a dessert that was 'included' since it was that night's special, but sometimes you think it would have been better had they not included anything at all, as it was a dry bland tasting angel food berry cake. Not a great way to end the night. During the dinner, you have delicious steaks, scintillating conversation to build back up from the initial frustration, only to be let down at the end. The only reason I would come back is because others suggest it and put of ease since dreary several locations, but not for a full experience for the price paid, that's for sure. read more

We have usually been quite happy with the food at the Sawmill. Unfortunately, our most recent experience was probably the WORST restaurant meal we have had in recent memory. Steak: ordered medium rare, received tough thin well done. Awful ! Lobster : one was tough , the other was broken and dissolved into mush when eaten. Once again...Awful. ! The Sawmill has always been one of my favourite restaurants, so was happy one finally opened in Stony Plain a few years ago. Since then, my wife and I have dined there well over 20 times, although now we more often have our supper in their cozy lounge, with its 80's music and big screen TV's, as opposed to their more formal dining area. All the servers are super friendly and efficient, and the food has never disappointed us. I'm addicted to their prime rib (with garlic mashed potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding), and it's always tender and delicious. Do make sure you use their signature steak sauce! The Mrs. loves their chicken dishes, especially the Cordon Bleu. They have a great Wednesday special with bottles of wine at half price, plus the price of their prime rib is also reduced, so we can enjoy a comfortable feast for around $70 (incl. their well deserved 20% tip)! read more

Came here for a birthday dinner. Service was good; it was quite busy but our server managed to stay on top of things. Had the chicken cordon bleu, really enjoyed it. Beers were cold. When they first opened, the food, service & management was fantastic. It was our "go to" place for family meals & staff parties. Since then, new manager, young, inexperienced staff and $36 for a filet you can't chew through? Baked potatoes so over done the skin is almost black? Yikes! When you're spending upwards of $300 for a family of 4's dinner, you should expect that everything is perfect, the food, the service etc. I can't see this restaurant lasting unless they get their act together. read more

Went there wanting a steak. Get there, no one in front to greet us, then they want to send us to the lounge. I didn't go there to loud listen to music and watch TV. We got seated in an almost empty restaurant after they told us it was too busy and we should have made a reservation. The staff was bitchy and condescending because I did complain about not wanting to be in a lounge. The prices shocked me, 35 bucks for and 8 oz steak. We walked out and got tremendous attitude from the bitty women up front. Never would go back. Had a great meal for half the price at Boston Pizza. read more

Went for Sunday Brunch, had reservation. Very nice buffet, looking fresh and lots of choice. No serving problems, in fact staff and management were exceptionally helpful. Food was excellent - even the various egg dishes were done right! Lots of seafood and other entrees - desserts were lovely.. Place was full by 11:15 that Sunday. I usually really like the Sawmill but this is the first time I've been to the Stony Plain one. We were there last night. Maybe it's because we ordered a dish we have never had there before ...but it wasn't what we expected and it did not resemble the menu description. We ordered the roast ... It was described as being roast with mashed potatoes, gravy and asparagus ... When we got it ... I had 3 tiny slices of what could have been asparagus stalks and maybe 1 ounce of actual beef ...the rest was grissle. We basically had a giant plate of mashed potatoes. The worst part of it was the host cleared our plates and asked us how our meal was ... We told him we were expecting more vegetables ...his response was "if I had known that from the start I would have gotten you more vegetables". Uh ... You never asked us at the start ...he then takes our plates away and never comes back. My thought was ... Why did you even ask us if you weren't going to action anything .... His actions make me never want to return there. read more

After numerous attempts, this will be the last time we ever go to this location. I am so tired of being seated on the bar side for brunch even when I show up early and there is no one in the restaurant and being told if I don't like it I should make a reservation. There are two of us for crying out loud. It's terrible business to let two hungry people who are actually in your lobby (parking lot empty) leave because they don't want to sit on the bar side and your restaurant side is all booked up with "reservations" even though it's completely empty. All other times trying to eat here are equally split between someone at the front desk who either has NO idea what they are doing and have been left to struggle on their own (BAD management) or employees with terrible attitudes who make you feel like it's an imposition that you would like to be seated. We live in the area and have given this location sooooo many chances and it's always the same. Now I will be happy to tell anyone who will listen how bad this place is. The entire staff, including the guy who stands around talking to people as they get their food from the buffet (annoying AF by the way) (who puts food in his pockets when he thinks no one is looking) needs to take a field trip to The Moose Factory on Calgary Trail in Edmonton and be taught by amazing staff how to create an experience from the minute patrons walk through the door until they are leaving. PS--the food is mediocre at best and you would expect much better for the price of the brunch. Head to Sandy View in Spruce Grove for better food at essentially the same price. read more
