It was the last day in Wilmington for my partner and me and we stopped here for lunch after reading some good reviews.  We started with the meatball salad.  The veggies were fresh (crispy romaine and cucumbers, they took the time to use and slice cherry tomatoes instead of beefsteak, black olives, a pepperoncini and sprinkled with parmesan...this is tlc!), meatballs had a higher ratio of meat to filler/breadcrumbs and the ricotta was smooth and sweet...we highly recommend this dish and you wont get this anywhere exactly like this! We also shared their cheesesteak with mushrooms.  The sub roll was slightly toasted and not the kind you get in most places...it was thinner with less volume of bread, which made the meat, cheese and mushrooms the stars! We also ordered an italian sub to go...this thing is huge and feeds 2 people.  The roll was soft and filled with salami, cappocolo, ham, prosciutto, provolone, lettuce, tomato, and hot peppers.  An amazing sub! Bottom line, the service was fast and the food was outstanding...we would be weekly visitors here if we were locals! read more

Small, casual family Italian restaurant. No fancy decor or tablecloths, just great food. We found this from Yelp and we were not disappointed. Brussel sprouts - delicious. They were roasted to crunching and flavored with balsamic reduction. Porkette sandwich - the best sandwich loaded with tender pork. We got it "loaded" with broccoli rabe. The meat was tender, juicy and flavorful. Not realizing how big the sandwich would be, we ordered a third item which we tasted but took almost all of it home. The Gnocchi with crab meat, spinach and tomato was delicious as well, but we were stuffed (2 of us were dining). Service was fast and friendly. So good that I'm drooling just thinking about it. I absolutely loved the calamari with the red sauce, which has perfectly roasted sweet red pepper with balsamic vinegar over it. My friend didn't like it as much because it wasn't as crispy, but I didn't mind it. I also loved every single dish we had here. My favorite was the crab dip over the fried chicken (forgot the name) and the side of gnocchi that came with it. The Philly cheesesteak was better than the one in Philadelphia. Seriously blown away but how amazing this little spot was. The 2 waitresses working were killinnnnnn it!!!!! They were on POINT. Quick with everything and so nice, had great recommendations and really knew their stuff too! Food was amazing. We got the Brussels & the meatball app. The Brussels were a little tooooo crispy for us but flavor was good. The meatballs were soooooooo good, it was the sauce for me though!!! They give a little plop of ricotta too with that. So glad we got that app! I got the spinach ravioli special it was in a light blush type of sauce with spinach and tomatoes on it. Wow. I actually never order anything like that but the waitress recommended it and it was to die for! Huge raviolis too, great portion. My husband got the porkette "loaded" he said it was great too! He couldn't finish it and only ate half it was hugeeee! So good, the broccoli rabe there is exactly how broccoli rabe should be!! We also got a garden salad which was simple but amazing. Dressing was great!!! It is a little bit of a smaller place, so it did get a little hot but that could've been the pasta sweats we had lol. The best Italian food in the state of Delaware. When I first went there, I was excited to hear them call the sauce "gravy". That's the real stuff! I grew up near a heavily populated Italian community and my mom learned to make a lot of authentic Italian foods. Scalessa's is just like that. Food for the soul! I can't say enough good things about this place! I celebrated my birthday with family at their new location in Pikes Creek. The atmosphere is welcoming, classic and stylish the food is amazing!!! My 4 year old grandson kept saying " Wow" with ever bite. My 31 year old son said," this is probably some of the best Italian food that I ever ate!" I was traveling through Wilmington on my way to Newark for a conference. This placed seemed like a neighborhood favorite. As people came in, they knew other people that were already there dining. The dining room is pretty small. I would recommend making a reservation if you plan on going. The server made a couple of recommendations and I ended up going with Grandma's gravy and a side meatball. It came with a side salad. The pork in the pasta sauce was excellent. Stopped here after a visit to Winterthur which is about 12 minutes away. This is one of those places that makes you feel like you are home. The super friendly attentive fast service to the home cooked first class food just like mom or Nonna made. We were warmly greeted and felt comfortable like family. This was our first visit but certainly not our last. Started off with the Eggplant Meatball App with Sweet Ricotta. The meatballs were huge and flavorful with a perfect red gravy. The raisins inside were a nice Sicilian touch. Came with a side of creamy sweet ricotta which blended perfectly with the meatballs. The New Sunday Gravy Parmigiana and the Porkette Sandwiches were first class and so delicious. The Sunday gravy had meatballs pork and sausage which have been cooked for hours to super tender consistency and topped off with Provolone, Just like my mother in laws. The Porkette was truly melt in your mouth with broccoli rabe, long hots, and provolone. The pork gravy was perfect. We took home a lemon ricotta cookie which was moist and delicious. Located in a residential area (Highlands), this is a small and charming neighborhood spot. We picked up and imagined how enjoyable it would be to dine in. The Eggplant stack appetizer had just right seasoned and breaded eggplant with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes in between the layers. Their Porketta sandwich was excellent! Roast Pork that could stand alone but is taken to the next level when you add sharp provolone, Rabe & Long hots. The Chicken Italiano was also excellent with the peppered Ham and Capi nicely complementing the chicken cutlet. Also, have house made desserts. They were out of the Nestle Butter Cake so we got the lemon cake and chocolate chip cookie which were both tasty. From the phone ordering to pick up, service was excellent! We had a weekend wedding in Wilmington this weekend and in addition it was my daughter in laws birthday. My son found Scalessas on line and booked a party for 9. Upon arrival, our table was ready, a BIG plus for a large party at a small but quaint neighborhood restaurant. The weather was in the 90s and could the place use a bit more AC? Yes but we managed a bit better with the front door open. We started with Calamari in both a red AND green sauce. The things were small, the portion was large and the taste was delicious. For entrees we had Grandmas Sunday Sauce, Eggplant Parm, Chicken Parm, Shrimp(La Rosa) and Gnocchi and Crab with Gnocchi(my other son special ordered this). Not much to say except it was all spectacular. Portion size was plentiful and everyone enjoyed. We shared a couple of desserts Cannolis, Ricotta cheese cake, Chocolate Chip loaf and this too was abundant and delicious. It's a pity the restaurant is so tiny because with this quality of food, they definitely could fill more tables. Reservations recommended. read more

This is a very small family owned Italian restaurant. The staff was exceptional. Being from NC we don't often get "authentic" Italian cuisine. It's normally Olive Garden for us. I saw several positive reviews on Yelp for Scalessa's. The restaurant is in a local neighborhood but you can find parking on the street. As for us, Scalessa's was THE BEST Italian food we have ever had! The best meatball and canoli I ever had. We will be sure to visit Scalessa's again the next time we are in the area! read more
