We had some good shaved ice on the Big Island but this place wins the award for BEST! Because it was the most fun to eat! Below is why this is a SNACK! Shaved ice (mango, guava, passion fruit) with chocolate macadamia nut ice cream topped with bits of mochi. So sad to discover this one on the way out! $11 but worth every single bite!! Add the ice cream and the mochi, people!!!
Scandinavian Shaved Ice hits the sweet spot after a hot day in Kona. We wandered over from our cruise ship and were happy to find this place around the corner, nestled in the middle of cute little shops and right across the beach. Ordering is half the fun because the menu has so many options. I went straight for the Dole Whip swirl stuffed in the center of my shave ice--pineapple and vanilla together is peak vacation. The cherry syrup with it was delicious. Toppings are next‑level too--condensed milk drizzle turns the whole mound into Hawaiian creamed snow. For those avoiding artificial dyes, a whole section of "natural colors" makes the decision easy as well. Portion sizes are generous, but be careful while you eat because the edges might topple down. Everything melts fast in Kona humidity, but that just forces you to enjoy every spoonful faster! Scandinavian Shaved Ice is now a mandatory pit stop for me if I ever come back to Kona!
5 star for location since it's across from the beach and there is a parking lot behind the establishment. There are also fun shave ice signs that you can take a picture with in front of the store. Employees were friendly and service was quick. We ordered rainbow shave ice and it shaped perfectly for us! The texture of the ice is not as soft as I would have liked it to be. Spoiled with how soft the ice is at Waiola in Oahu. If I had to choose between Scandinavian or Gecko Girlz, I would prefer to go to Gecko Girlz instead. Nevertheless, shave ice with a beachfront view is pretty sweet.
I walked from my hotel but I believe there are parking lots around. The place is decent & small. I got the lava flow which was tasty & got macadamia nut ice cream inside. Good size portion for a decent price. I will say the service was fast but not necessarily friendly. They seem like annoyed teenagers. No greeting and looked annoyed at everything you asked. Good shaved ice though!
Never disappointed when we come. Syrup is not too sweet and ice is fluffy and soft. The employees are all very sweet and always smiling! Highly recommend when you come to Kona!
This was one of the only shave ice places that I tried while I was in Hawaii due to a crazy schedule, but this was supposedly the must try shave ice place in Hawaii. And, boy was it amazing! They had so many flavors. So many! It was hard to choose just one flavor and they allow you to mix flavors. They really pack in the flavors by patting down the ice to be pretty solid so that all the flavors stay locked into the shave ice. So, every bite was full of flavor. You could also get ice cream, which looked really, really good, but I'm glad that I held back. I was a little greedy and got a large size and I barely could finish it. So, I'm glad that I didn't get the ice cream for my stomach's sake. If you are in the area and looking for shave ice, this is THE place you must try. You'll regret it if you lose your chance to try it here.

Was it good? Yes, was it messy? Yes! The shaved ice comes in 3 sizes and all are way too top heavy. The people in front of me their cone collapsed on them as they were picking it off the counter. Even with that information and careful eating ours collapsed as well. We got the nice cream in the middle and honestly that was the best part. I'd recommend either getting ice cream separately and the shaved ice separately adding them together just makes it even more messy. Best flavor was the macadamia nut ice cream it was so creamy.

I haven't had Hawaiian shave ice before, but my guava, pineapple, passion fruit ice with vanilla/pineapple swirl soft serve really hit the spot after a day at the beach and was cheaper than some of the other stores nearby. The fruit flavors all kind of tasted the same (like fruity sugar which was good), but I'm not eating shaved ice for fresh fruit. The soft serve in the middle (an additional cost) really brought the ice to the next level, so highly recommend adding that. Like some others have pointed out, the service was a bit aloof and unenthusiastic, but they still took my order, made my ice, and took my payment just fine.
Overall Experience: 8.5/10 The shop is located in a busy part of the strip, and parking is tough to find at times unless you are open to pay for parking. The shop is a walk in take out with a few tables on the inside. The service there was good, but wait times can reach up to 15ish minutes if it is super busy but they are typically pretty fast. The Ice: The ice was good, as the flavors were strong, but is very noticeable very syrupy. It felt a little sugary and artificial at times, but it is still perfect on a hot day after the beach. There are a bunch of flavors to choose from for their shaved ice. The ice itself is not as smooth and melty as I would have expected, compared to other shaved ice places I have experienced in the past. The texture was in between a ballpark snowcone and fluffy ice. They have an option to put ice cream in between the ice and it was a perfect addition. There were many different flavors but my favorite was the macadamia nut, as it was a perfect mix of creamy and nutty flavors and the ube which was a rich and has a vibrant purple color. We came back here another time just for their ice cream and not their shaved ice. Overall: This is a great place to cool off at and there will be something for anyone at this shop. I would recommend people to try the ice cream though!
Always friendly, patient servers that are passionate about all the flavors. Volcano is a fun flavor banana ice cream, strawberry swirls, and Oreo cookies. The lilikoi cheesecake ice cream is divine. I typically walk across the street to enjoy my ice cream on the beach next to the palace.
I was recommended this place by a local and personally, shaved ice isn't my favorite but they put ice cream in the middle which made it better for me! Also, staff was super nice and said they go through about 200 blocks of ice a day in the busy summer months... that's a lot! I respect the hustle, keep up the great work!
This is on the lower end of shave ice in my opinion after visiting a number of spots on both Oahu and the Big Island. I did appreciate the detail with which our server prepared the shave ice and enjoyed the strawberry flavor, but the Pińa Colada tasted very artificial. The macadamia nut ice cream in the middle was average and the rice mochi bits we added on top were decent. I recommend staying away from coconut flavoring in general, as the fruit seems to be less artificial tasting. There's free street parking in the alley behind it, but we were there quite late, so it may not be available during the day. read more

Walked around trying to find legit Hawaiian ice. This place was tucked away in the corner. Not the cleanest looking place. The girls were very nice. They had lots of flavors- to include natural options. Overall- we were happy and finally got to try shaved ice! read more

Ok there are so so SO many flavors and combinations you could spend an entire day trying to come up with the best combo, but at a certain point you just have to send it! We got one small with li hing, POG, and mai tai and one medium with ube, haupia, kahlua, with a scoop of mud pie ice cream. The ice is very fine and getting a scoop of ice cream in the middle really ties everything together. This wasn't necessarily the best shaved ice we had, but better than most shaved ice we've tried on the mainland and all the assortment of flavors made it fun! The portions are huge, so either size down or make sure to share. There are a couple of small tables to enjoy your treat but the space is a bit tight. The staff are all really friendly, so I'd recommend asking them what they suggest if you're not sure what to get! read more

Yes shaved ice is amazing. We got soft serve in the middle for 1 selection. Another day we got an ice cream called the volcano: banana ice cream, strawberry jam with oreo crumbs. That was pretty good- never seen that flavor before. Line goes fast. Very easy to fill up the punch card if you live in the area. read more

Pretty good shaved ice! The ones in Hawaii really are just much better than elsewhere - super soft and perfectly soaked by the syrups. Service here seemed a little impatient, but that didn't faze us too much. The portion sizes are quite large and generous, and my friends and I shared a medium amongst the 3 of us which was the right amount. We just got the POG and pina colada flavors, both of which were good! I liked the POG more but the pina colada was quite an accurate representation of the drink flavor. NEVER disappoints. We came here 5 years ago and this repeat visit was just as incredible! I got a small coconut shave ice with macadamia nut ice cream and boba topping. Wow!! It was incredible. Boba definitely belongs in shave ice! The girl who took our order was super friendly and fast at making our order. We hardly had to wait. They have a little seating inside, but outside there is a nice little grassy area to sit in. I love this place. Every time I'm in Kona I'll definitely be stopping here. read more
Stopped by for some shaved ice while walking along Ali'i Drive. They have so many different flavor options for a basic shaved ice! We ended up choosing strawberry, pineapple, and coconut - great combination. The ice was perfect - nice and fluffy. My only complaint was that the flavors had a bit of that artificial flavor to it that I've never really experienced when having shaved ice, but otherwise it was great! We got a medium, and it was definitely large enough to share between two if you wanted. Staff were super friendly and efficient. A great stop for some shaved ice while strolling around Kona. read more
From my boys: "It's sweet and there are pretty pokey lights. There's ice and straws and spoons and a fridge. No long lines. Flavors are super good; there's Dole pineapple soft serve too. They got all the tropical flavors and more. They got the best OG shaving machine that produces the most consistent ice texture. They got lots of ice cream bases and toppings. They got friendly staff to help you out. They got seating in the store so you can sit and enjoy. read more
A really solid shave ice place with many flavors and options for toppings. We had the lychee, guava, and watermelon syrups with macadamia nut ice cream tucked inside of the ice, and condensed milk drizzle. My one complaint is that the tables here were infested with dozens of tiny bugs so we ended up sitting outside instead. read more

This is the best shave ice for me so far because of the fluffiness of the ice and the flavorful syrups. There was no line and the service was good. While waiting, a little kid ran in and grabbed the shaker of some powder (li hing mui?), licked it and then went outside to shake the powder into his remaining shave ice. I told the guy and said now you have to throw it away. When the mom came in, I told her what happened and she offered to pay for it. Employee said it was okay and he would just wipe it off. Aih yah! I wish I had checked in via Yelp right away because there was an offer for a free topping. Snow cap would have been good and next time, ice cream. They can be busy when the cruise ships come in due to the proximity of the dock. Please support this local business read more
this spot has some of the best shaved ice i've ever had. i also loved that they had natural/organic flavors free of artificial dyes and whatnot. i got haupia ice cream with mine and it was so perfect, but they have a good amount of ice cream flavors to choose from. i would definitely come back here next time i'm on the island! read more

Delicious shaved ice. So many flavours and toppings. The portions are HUGE so ask first as it was almost like a meal for me! This place is walkable from kona harbour. It gets lots of foot traffic from people at the pier or cruise ships. The line moves relatively fast so don't be disheartened by it. Once I ordered you get a choice of 3 flavours on your ice and can even put toppings inside the bowl for a kind of buried treasure dish at the end. You also can top it off with ice cream or more toppings like Boba. So refreshing on a hot day. It definitely hit the spot. I drizzled mine with coconut cream and had ube ice cream inside. It was a meal all itself for less than $12 ! The service was stellar and fast and super friendly. And I loved the little plastic holders to make it easier to eat without risking a lost of your shaved ice. We took ours outside to enjoy the beautiful kona weather. On the big island. There was only 3 decent shaved ice places I could find and this one was the most easily accessible. So 5 stars for the best location and a stellar shaved ice that did not disappoint. read more
We tried their hawaiian sunset with macadamia nut ice cream and condensed milk and a second order of pink lady with vanilla ice cream and gummy bears. The ice itself isn't the best I've ever had because it was a bit hard, but their syrup flavors were good and not diluted. I enjoyed the macadamia nut ice cream too, but I only had two macadamia nuts pieces. It can get pricey if you start adding ice cream or toppings. Parking can be a bit challenging if you are only coming for the shaved ice. We found some parking lots that require you to pay to park there, but not many free spots nearby. read more

Absolutely delicious shave ice at Scandinavian Shave Ice! We got the Hawaiian Sunset, and it was a burst of tropical flavors--perfectly sweet, refreshing, and melt-in-your-mouth fluffy. The staff was super friendly and so helpful, making the experience even better. Right on Ali'i Drive, this spot is a must-visit. Highly recommend! We'll be back for more! read more

Best shave ice on the island! This is a must try when visiting the Big Island. Friendly staff and welcoming environment. A ton of syrup options that are packed with flavor in every bite. They do not skimp on the amount of syrup added. Highly recommend getting the snow cap added which adds a sweet creamy flavor to an already delicious treat. Love enjoying this icy treat with the sounds of the ocean in the background. read more

We got the large shaved ice and share it with 4 people. IT WAS SO GOOD! Make me want to go back, but sadly we did not have time :( the flavors were really good. Also DO NOT FORGET to check in with Yelp and get that 1 free topping, not including the mochi! The girl that served us was really nice. The woman and man were also very nice and friendly, it seemed like they enjoy what they were doing. This place was such a vibe. WOULD VERY RECOMMEND, so refreshing for the sunny weather! read more

Does the ice cream or soft serve contain egg? Family member has an egg allergy but dairy is fine.
I'm allergic to eggs as well. I was told the vanilla and the pineapple soft serve did not have egg! I got the vanilla and was fine.
